Independence

I was at the National Archives at Kew just before the General Election. I took out the file marked 'Scottish Nationalism and Scottish National Party'. This was mostly of the early 1950's including the time of the arrest of Wendy Wood for organising an impromptu meeting at Trafalgar Square. What I did find sinister was that some office-bearer (I think and not an ordinary member) of the London Branch of the SNP was an actual Police informant and very detailed minutes of meetings and names of members were passed over to MI5. As a former Secretary of the LOndon Branch in the early 80's I recognised some of the names being referred to with their MI5 file reference numbers blacked out. Very interesting reading indeed. I have taken a copy and must send HQ a copy for the Party archives. The arrest and jailing of Wendy Wood is a hoot to read. Joking apart it is a bit sinister to have a viper in the nest. I always remember Gerry Fisher who was Convenor in the 1980's asking new faces if they were from Scotland or Special Branch. Some members always thought their phones were tapped.

Just watching the report on this on Newsnight Scotland. Plenty partisan sneering from Gordon Brewer but I think this story might 'have legs'. Heh.

The crazy world of spooks eh?

However aside from the speculation, what evidence is there that any of this had an effect on the SNP's share of the vote?

EDITED: Hector Maclean, you seem to have a very bad habit of using the "Homepage" box to include other peoples' URLs. That box is for the use of people who run their own websites, usually blogs. It is deceitful for you to pretend that you are that person.

Therefore I have removed the link you put there. If you have your own blog, please enter its URL there in future. If you do not have a blog leave it blank.

You probably should start your own blog, then you may start gaining a bit more respect for other peoples' work.

Listen 'Siteowner SD', the f...... thing won't let you leave it blank!

I have tried and it merely puts in the last link you used. Generally I just change it to the blog whose comments section I am posting on, and as I had earlier posted on Land of the nearly free it was stuck on that one. I can assure you I have no wish to deceive anyone, I'd happily leave the bloody thing blank.

I used to link to another site which had nothing to do with blogs, however that w..... B.C. deleted it with a message about how he would not be tolerating 'spurious' links on his site (t..... that he is).

As I can't leave it blank I have changed it to google.co.uk. Surely nobody can object to that?

EDIT: You seem to have a Cookie problem.

Gravatar I just saw this - I strongly suspect that a Cookie problem may be the least of his worries! (I suspect that the B.C. he so kindly refers to is none other than yours truly )

Gravatar Mmmm... yes Bill, you were named in person, in full, but I reduced it to an abbreviation to protect the innocent. Since I would never dream of calling you a "t....r" myself, I was damned if I'd let H.McL. use my webspace to communicate the insult by proxy.

If Hector is not himself a "t....r" of the first degree, then I am indeed a monkeys' uncle.

Gravatar APs? Agents maybe, but not provacateurs, and some of them probably are in the party right now deliberately buying time. "Gradualism" anyone?

Gravatar Yeah I asked the Sunday Herald about this and they said they weren't sure why it wasn't there. The guy who wrote it was happy enough to send a copy over though.

Gravatar A chàirdean, sorry for the intrusion. You can skip or ignore, but I'd urge all Scots residents to view this poster before going into the ballot box today!

Print version poster:
http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/endla.../endlabourlies/
http://www.dont-vote-labour.co.u....uk/ votesnp.jpg

For emailing:
http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/endla...s/small-poster/

Print the high-res version of the poster.

View it. Pass it on. Print it. Hang it on windows and walls, especially near key seats!

Email the lower-res poster to all and sundry! Family, friends, pets, strangers - go for it. You'll be helping Scotland address political dependency, poverty and warmongering.

See through the labour lies and spin Scotland! SNP for a return to democracy...1, 2 and 3.

Thanks ;o)

Gravatar In the 1960s and 1970s, in the Quebec province, the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police; the feds) had infiltrated the independence movement. They had files about every political leader (notably Rene Levesque, whose phone was tapped), voters and supporters. These agents also managed to steal the Parti Quebecois's members list (in a "mini Watergate" incident). In order to demonize the independentist movement, following the 1970 hostage crisis, RCMP agents posing as "separatist terrorists" started sending fake manifests to the news agencies, and even putting a few barns on fire.

Decades later, these informations were made public through the use of the Canadian Information Access law.

I sincerely believe that we should open communication channels between independence movements, in order avoid making the same mistakes. The Quebec independence movement has fallen victim to numerous political tricks, illegal actions and financial hurdles (for example, massive illegal spendings by the "NO" side before the 1995 referendum on independence) over the last 30 years. No doubt some of these problems could have been avoided.

It is difficult to exchange information between independence movements. The most obvious reasons are:
- The language barrier. I write in broken English. I don't speak Catalan. I have no idea what's happening in the Feroe islands or in Greenland because I can't read their news. Etc.
- Political considerations: your political movement doesn't want to be discredited by my political movement's scandals (for instance).
- Legal challenges: "we" could be declared illegal at any time, especially if we're close to succeeding.

Surely, if I could translate my blog in English, you would find some useful and interesting information, which could certainly help Scotland. The same could be said about the numerous books and reports written about Quebec independence; most are written in French. Of course, the books written in English about the Quebec independence movement are very biased.

In the meantime, I keep reading your blog & find it fascinating.
