Planting your flag in your opponent's field was not necessarily invented in South Bend.
I saw Arkansas plant their flag in DKR when they beat Texas a few years ago.
Tennessee planted their flag after a 19-14 win at Georgia last year (interesting note: Tennessee exacted their revenge for UGA players stomping the T in Neyland in 2001. After that game, the SEC issued a mandate saying any stomping of the opposing team's symbol would not be tolerated. There was no such mandate after UT planted the flag on the stretch G last year. I'm waiting for UGA to take up the practice before the SEC bans such boorish behavior.)

Am I the only one who liked the flag planting? Maybe I'd feel differently if Sweatervest Corleone had done it at the Big House or it had been done to a team I like, but I thought it was hilarious. And that sort of of colorful episode makes college football so much more fun than the NFL.

I'm with you, Joey. I love the rivalry of college football. Things like flags at mid-field or a sod cemetary give games extra meaning, give players extra incentive to play well, and give fans more emotion in the stands. It just makes for a better experience for players and spectators alike.

There's a whole nation of Notre Dame despisers that are with you, Joey, and I am too. Hell, I would hate whatever team did that at Michigan Stadium, but I would *love* hating them for doing it. It would make my hate strong, and I love having my hate strong. Holtz is precisely wrong: college football needs more of that nonsense and less skirting of NCAA regulations and getting every team you ever coach in trouble with the Man.

I freaking loved it. Loved every flag-planting second of it. I thought it was original (even though it turned out not to be) and rubbed the noses of the Irish in the loss just enough. I mean, c'mon, 5 straight losses to MSU in your own house? That's bad. That's very bad. That's "Go Ahead And Plant Your Flag On Our 50" bad. Kudos to those stinkin' Spartans.

First time posting, long time reader. I do have to agree the fan support out here in the LA area is terrible and the main reason I can't stand USC. These "fans" have recently popped up the last few years and start talking crap when prior to the end of the Carson Palmer era, no one around here cared about USC Football.
I was at the Rose Bowl for the UCLA-Oklahoma game and it was pathetic as well. A nationally ranked opponent was coming into town and they could barely fill the stadium half way. Not sure if they showed it on TV but the end zone sections were nearly empty. UCLA is starting to make its way back and I like what Coach Dorrell is doing there. My brother and I commented on one play, UCLA had the ball 3rd and 1 on the 19 and they ran a play action pass to a wide open Marcedes Lewis, any of you doubt that if that was Michigan Coach Carr would've called a run up the gut that would've been stuffed and we would have to settle for a FG?
Keep up the good work.

I liked it, too and I agree that I would love hating the team that did it to Michigan. However, I would hate loving Michigan if they ever did that to someone else. I couldn't defend the Wolverines doing that at another team's stadium. Something about being raised to be a good guest.
Desmond's Heisman pose was at home, so that was OK.

I think it was funny. I think it would have been funny if someone did it to us too. It'll definitely make your players try harder to not get beat at home. Seriously, if you don't like, don't get beat at home. Just like if you don't like people running up the score on you, get better. Class and all that is overrated. USC is arguably the cockiest team in the country, but as long as you get on the field and back it up, its fine.
Why does Lou Holtz have a job? ESPN should be ashamed that they hired a man who cheated his way through coaching. Fine if he has a job, other people should be able to call him out about his infractions on TV. Him talking about class, is like Bobby Knight giving everyone a lesson on anger management.

I liked the flag planting, but would be mad as hell if...say...Florida did that in Tallahassee.
As you note, CFR is often a source of snickers and subdued laughter.
Finally, none of the Mr. Donahue stuff. Cool?

Another good sideline guy is ESPN's Dave Ryan. He's no ex-athlete, but he's no "babe" either and he's a pretty good sports journalist.
