Gravatar If this is true we are all in for a very long fall next season. Road games at PSU, ND and OSU with Hermann running the defense.

Gravatar When the USCs, Auburns and the NDs of the world move forward with new minds (Kiffin&sarkisian, Al Borges and Fat Charlie) Michigan has chosen to turn back time and has brought in old goats. We $%#@ing suck.

If Loeffler leaves, we can kiss goodbye to Mallet and all other uber-Qb recruits.

Panic level has risen tremendously. Really really worried about the direction of our program.

Gravatar I originally intended on posting something... but I just can't.

wow.

Gravatar Let's assume this is all true. Malone is forced out, English is discouraged into leaving and Loeffler possibly will leave in a similar fashion to Ron because he sees the glass ceiling.

Herrmann and Gittleson undeservedly remain in their positions. DeBord gets promoted into his old chair. All three of these guys are from the old boy network (JH and MG because they are Bo leftovers, DeBord because he's rumored to be Carr's best friend) and the former trio were the younger injections of new blood.

With this atrocity being fully realized, how can you continue to support Lloyd Carr? Come on Brian, you seem smarter than this. Because he's still on the sideline wearing the blue hat with the maize M isn't a good enough reason anymore. I love this site, but if you don't lay into Carr with fury over this, you will no longer be a smart fan with provocative opinions. You'll just be among the legions of slappy drones. We should be calling for his head.

Everyone should be able to recognize that Carr and his attitudes are now a massive liability to this program. If it was a common theory that it was impossible to leave a bad legacy after you've won a national championship unless there was a scandal, Lloyd would appear to be hell-bent on putting that theory to the test.

Gravatar I NEVER thought I would say this... but I'm with BRCE. If we lose Loeffler and English, and we don't have a 10+ win season including victories over ND and tOSU next year - I'm joining the Fire Lloyd Carr bandwagon. Un. Bleeping. Believable.

Gravatar This is the worst day in the history of Michigan football. It's unfathomable that a DC who's teams give up an average of 30+ points per game in bowl games, and who's had 1 good year coordinating isn't fired. It's unfathomable that your best defensive coach, and maybe your best recruiter, isn't tried at DC instead. It's unfathomable that the HC doesn't promote his best young coach to OC and instead puts in his old-school, dull as rocks, best friend who's offensive teams were average during his tenure as OC and who's HC ability is a disgrace.

Lloyd Carr...YOU F_CKING SUCK. Michigan football now stands for MEDIOCRITY. The worst coaching staff in America (Carr, Debord, Herrmann)...what an absolute embarrasing joke.

Gravatar BRCE, I didn't want to type all of that so I am glad you said it for me. Sadly, I have given up my season tickets - otherwise I would be tempted to attend and boo the coaching staff.

Gravatar Okay, the Saints announced the signing of 3 assistant coaches today but Malone was not among them. I realize Malone is quoted as saying he will start with N.O. on Monday.

English is apparently still debating although is close to having made up his mind.

And finally the reports say that DeBord will "reportedly" assume the OC position.

I know, I know, clinging to hope when hope is on life support.

Do we interpret the English and Malone hirings as professional assistants as confirmation that Michigan has had outstanding coaches thereby inferring the problem has been with player execution and production?

Are these promotions for Malone and English or are they to be viewed as escapes from a program being run by a tight fisted control freak 20 years behind the times?

Gravatar What Ben said. I can't even fucking come up with anything to say. I'm shellshocked.

Gravatar According to a story in the Chicago Tribune, English will take the Bears' DB coaching position. The story also states that he waited to accept the job in order to hear if the DC position was available at Michigan. When English was told he could become the co-Defensive Coordinator, he accepted the Bears' offer.

Gravatar _____________ (Insert a prolonged, extremely profane, string of curse words here).

Gravatar here we go, 7-6 again. i really enjoyed the two good yrs with malone at the helm when we were a good, exciting offense. this is unbelievable. this coaching staff will squander so much talent by playing not to lose instead of playing to win. i'm fed up with lloyd. really really fed up. bring the new blood. i really hope the media puts as much pressure on carr as possible. shame him out of this job. this is an embarrassment to the winningest program in cfb. completely wrong direction to go in.

Gravatar Right now I'm drunk and this still pisses me off. Holy crap Michigan is in trouble. Damn.

Are we talkin Sun Bowl now?

Gravatar I hate to be the voice of reason when all around me are losing it. It makes me doubt myself. The only thing that makes sense is that LC plans on bringing in his replacement as DC and Assistant HC in preparation for his retirement. If that does not happen and JH remains, I will definitely lose it. I have to believe that LC still is the steward of a successful football program although the partial stories and rumors to date leave many question his sanity. It's an embarassment to me that we have one of the best business schools in the country, but seem to suck at how we run our football company.

Gravatar Hmmm . . . might the departure of Enlgish be a second reason (besides the kid thing) for Eugene decommitting??

Gravatar For those who are shocked or surprised by these rumors, I can only assume that you aren't familiar with the coaching fraternity.
It is the consumate good 'ol boy network. Always has been.
I had a friend whose husband was on Don James' staff at Washington, then Bowling Green, and later San Diego State.
The stories she told me about coaching staff pecking orders, incompetence, and patronage would make your hair curl and your blood boil.
Coaching staffs are not about what you know. They're all about *who* you know.

Gravatar The reason I'm most upset with English leaving is the amount of hard work that he has put in developing DBs and in recruiting. However, I will understand if we are making room for an outstanding new coach... like Carolina Panther DC Mike Trgovac (which I doubt)...

Everyone and anyone upset at this changes should speak up by emailing UM's Athletic Director William Martin
at wcmartin@umich.edu

Gravatar WTF man... WTF!!!! If Cutter is right and English was offered the "co-defensive coordinator" spot then Herrman is definately staying. Me thinks Herrman couldn't get another NFL job and Lllloyd doesn't fire anyone as a rule. I always wondered what would happen if sonebody just didn't have luck "seeking other opportunities." Loeffler is huge as well, no Mallet. &$&#^@^@(!)#)$&@)(!!!!!

Gravatar these reports are very disturbing---however, what if they are only partially true, then we've wasted a lot of perfectly good ranting about this when we could have ranted about something else [mortals are allocated only a finite amount of ranting time]-----not only that, but we've got all winter to cut loose [unless we believe that michigan would ever listen to scheisskopfs like us, therefore we must speak out now]---and on an historical note i think fisher would have left a terrible legacy even without outside "help"----and by the way i just saw the worst defensive performance by a michigan hockey team [including goalies] that i have seen in a long long time.

Gravatar ok----i had not seen all the reports @ the wolverine, gbw, det news, etc.---it is time to rant----i am afraid that old time alums [who remember the bleak days of coach bump elliott] will allow this latest atrocity to pass, because they are afraid to risk a new hire [who might turn out to be another bump] and would rather stick with bo and/or his latest reincarnations as long as the team is "successful"--i. e., goes to a bowl game----and frankly, given the way that retread/mediocre coaches get recycled throughout all of sports, michigan is not the only team/institution will this mindset

Gravatar sorry---i meant "with this mindset"

Gravatar Correction for Nick - Carr doesn't fire his friends (Herrmann, DeBord, Gittleson), but has no problem demoting those not in the inner circle of incompetence like Malone and Parrish, who both chose to look elsewhere rather than accept a lesser role.

If Herrmann is indeed still the DC, Michigan has as poor a coaching staff as you'll find anywhere in the country.

Carr can't retire fast enough and I really hope Martin goes outside the Schembechler line for a new coach. New blood is needed so badly it's not funny.

Gravatar While conceding that all this news is producing vesuvian emotional reacton, strong esophagal irritation, and wholesale mental distress; and noting that mgoblog is both informative and entertaining, it is still the case that the present thread consists of no more than 25 comments, some of them from duplicate posters, none of them read by the current M coaching staff.

My point: By all means take Sean's suggestion and at least e-mail Martin and register your objections in no uncertain terms. Unfortunately, the problem is that the university, steeped in its "tradition" will only make substantial changes when disaster strikes, and their disaster threshhold is extremely high. Maybe if they couldn't fill the House every week they would take notice. Until then ...

Gravatar This puts Michigan at the bottom of the big ten in terms of coaching. Great move just in time for them to jack ticket prices!!!

We are inching closer and closer to becoming a basketball school

Gravatar Lloyd should make a movie "All the wrong moves"

Gravatar I'm so glad to see people that feel the same way I do. I will be graduating this spring and I struggling with how I'm going to approach my feelings toward the team this coming fall. Believe me, I will do everything in my power to emotionally divorce myself until Lloyd and his cronies are out of here. My passion for the program is as frozen as Walt Disney.

What I have NOT lost passion for his my rage over how disrespectful the "old alums" are toward the younger generation. They're so easy to peg. As someone said earlier, they don't care unless disaster strikes and their disaster threshold is extremely high. These bastards claim they are Michigan when in fact they're casual, cookie-cutter, glass-half full attitudes are a disgrace to a school that proudly claims the phrase "Leaders and Best."

We've often looked down at programs with fanatical bases like OSU, Tennessee and Alabama. For all the downside to being the way they are, that fanaticism does create an atmosphere of accountability. I don't know how many games I'll make next year, but I will lustily boo Lloyd Carr when his name is announced and I'll encourage others to do the same. I don't care if I'm treated like a pariah or not. At least I'm showing I have a pulse and I want this program to be as good as it can be.
