I'm no Phil Ivey, but unless the player holding the aces was playing EXTREMELY tight all tournament long, I don't see how you couldn't have called. Even with that knowledge, I still would have called with Kings 99% of the time. You made no mistakes. Annie Duke said so herself in her interview. Well done, sir. We're proud of you.
In my delusionally homeristic mind, I see these grave injustices as a karmic debt to be paid in the form of an undefeated season for our Wolverines this year.

Go find a nice 3-6 or 4-8 limit game and exact revenge while you're out there. (Limit being an easy game in which to tilt other people). Good run either way, making it to day 2.

Hey, if that's what it takes to knock you out, then you're probably pretty damn decent. So there's that.

It's something we all dream about doing, and you not only did it, but did it with some success and a blessing from one of the greats of the game. Cheers to you Brian...get 'em next year!

i used to think that the most boring thing in the world was listening to someone else's golf exploits ("i was up a hole on him, and i needed to par #9 to close him out. i hit my driver about 240, and had 155 from the right side of the fairway, which is either a stiff seven or easy eight. so i hit easy eight to about 10 feet, but he had blah, blah, blah.).
i was wrong. playing is one thing. READING about playing is something entirely different.

Sorry about the bad luck. The only thing better than Annie saying you did nothing wrong would be to have Norman Chad agree.

So.. like I apologize to everyone for being teh dumbs.... but, who the hell is Annie Duke?? I've been reading about her for days now, and I have clue zero how she became celebrity. Is she a poker star, or movie star?

Annie Duke is a poker "star", but I think only because she was the first woman to really make noise around the WSOP (at least from what I have gathered, because in my casual watching, I don't notice her win much). Also, I think she married a poker star and/or comes from poker blood, which helps her image.

Annie's brother is Howard Lederer, who is another poker pro of some repute, so it's a family thing.
Brian, what can you say but the cards got you? I think Annie was right in that you didn't make any mistakes, so it's not like you can kick yourself for screwing up. Doesn't make it feel any better for getting two successive bad beats, but there it is. Congratulations on your success and I'll be waiting to live vicariously through you next year.

You got jobbed, but you escaped the fate of playing against that fat guy with the holographic eyeglasses. We'd last five seconds against that guy before leaping across the table and snatching those stupid things off his jowly mug.

What can you do, man? He called a raise with a 10-7 off suit, yet he cracked aces. There is no justice in this world

BTW - The old dude's beard is stanley cup quality. A poker play off beard. Impressive

a "level" is two hours of play. The forced bets and antes remain static for those two hours and are then raised afterwards.

Right play on the KK.
There are several hands where a player is likely to move all-in that aren't aces. The other KK, QQ, JJ, AK, and maybe 10-10 and AQ for a weaker player or if they think you're being a bit loose. You dominate everyone but AA or KK...so odds are in your favor. You'd lose more chips on average by assuming AA than you would calling and dominating probably over 50% of the time when they have other hands, and catchinga lucky break against AA occassionaly.
Right play IMO

Brian,
Nice work here. Here's a big question for you: Did Annie Duke get her tits done after winning the Tournament of Champions a few years ago? I swear she did.

Despite my handle, I only know the slightest bit about poker. Sounds to me like you played it right and the cards caught you. I don't see where you've got anything to hang your head about.
Also "hooker alarms" is a hilarious term.

Brian,
That was terrible play. With AA or KK, the correct call, obviously, is to punt.

Brian,
You blew a once in a life time chance when you walked out. When you heard the hooker whisper, you should've wheeled around and announced to her
"You're with me, leather."

Even Dan Harrington wouldn't have folded those Kings, and he's probably one of the tightest players, and one of the best players out there. Phil Helmuth, for all his talk and bravado, is actually a pretty tight player as well, and he said he's only folded Kings maybe once or twice in his life.
It's a tough break, but it's still a pretty cool accomplishment to make it that far. Nice work.

Nothing you can do about the KK vs AA hand. Sucks to read about your bustout hand though, it reminds me when I was playing at the Wynn last year when I had AA in a NL game and was cracked by the same 10-7 offsuit, only for me it was the turn and river that did me in.
Players always second guess their hands when they go broke even if they make the right decision, well I do anyways.

I do remember Phil Helmuth once folding Kings to Aces preflop, but that's it. And Phil Helmuth, according to Phil Helmuth, is the only person who could have made that fold.
