Some validation of the concept of a blog poll --> No first place votes for West Virginia. Nothing against the Mountaineers as a team, but there are various people in the media voting them number one because "they have the best chance of going undefeated because of their schedule." That's no reason to vote a team #1. ESPN released their "power 16" today and there were three first place votes for WVU. The whole point of having people vote on how good the teams are is to discern the relative strength of each team despite the fact that their schedules are so different. These writers all have to make predictions at the start of the season - then they make votes that go along with their predicitons so they can look smart. I'm glad those in the blogpoll seem to understand the purpose of this endeavor. In all, the poll looks very solid. Way to go, bloggerinos.
One question - I see 56 first place votes. How come there are 57 total ballots? Did someone abstain from picking a #1?

My guess is that a few outliers picked #1s who didn't make the top 25 in the final accounting.
Anyway, one week in and this is already fun. As if I needed another reason to get geeked up about this coming season.

I smell a conspiracy! Somebody probably voted PSU #1 and it was conveniently lost!
I'm just kidding before you all jump all over me.
I don't think PSU at #13 was that much of a stretch. Brian had Michigan at #9 which was five spots ahead of where they turned out. I suspect I was singled out for my comments more than my vote. But I don't care. I'm having a blast with this.
And what's with the snide "Braves and Birds...has the decency to try to explain himself" comment? How many times do I have to comment to qualify as "explaining myself?"

There are actually 59 ballots now, as I changed some stuff around to help debug stuff and that left a window open for voters to enter week 1 ballots after the votes were tabulated. A few latecomers have ballots entered that aren't counted, like BevoSports:

This shouldn't happen in the future.

Sorry, I was in a bit of a rush to get the poll up and thus didn't have time to check as many blogs as I wanted. My bad, as the kids say.

yeeeas el jeffe.
How in the name of God's green earth did WV end up that high? Am I missing something (rhetorical question people)? They're not that good! Placing them any higher than 10th seems like a stretch.

Whoa there . . . we have enough football-related controversy going on. Let's not throw politics into the mix.

Re: Duke. In a sense, yes, if you count EDSBS. House Rock Built is also on the Duke bandwagon.
You can check the breakdown of each team's votes here:

(It's also on the sidebar.) It's really slow at the moment... I don't know if that's just my hosting or if the site's really that slow.

somehow, it doesn't really surprise me that a Michigan man was the one to organize something great like this. Keep up the good work.

One other factor justifying Georgia at #4: I need to pick one SEC team in the top five and, by the process of elimination, ended up with Georgia. My reasoning on the rest of the SEC is in my article.
As for Tereshinski/Shockley, you're being a Shockley revisionist. (Damn you!) I honestly thought last year that Shockley wouldn't be the starter by the end of the season. When last we saw him in '04, he was remarkably ineffective against Georgia Tech. He had a tendency to spend too long in the pocket and then make terrible throws while falling backwards with three defenders in his face. It's not inconceivable that JTIII will show similar improvement, especially since he was a fairly talented recruit when coming to Georgia.

I don't have my Dawgs anywhere near #4, but I gotta admit I'm tempted to think the QB situation won't be quite as dire as a lot of people are predicting. I keep thinking back to David Greene, who not only had never taken a single snap when he took the field in 2001 but was also being coached by a guy who'd never been a head coach before. His rookie season was by no means perfect, but he certainly did well enough to portend his future excellence (the upset win over Tennessee, terrific games against Kentucky and GT, etc.).
Given that Richt now has five years' experience under his belt, and has developed a sterling rep for developing quarterbacks during that time, it's not unreasonable to think that JT3 could actually turn out to be pretty good. I'm not going to call him the second coming of Danny Wuerffel or anything, but I'm prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt.

I still don't see a lack of a quarterback as that great a detriment. OL and defense are usually enough to win a lot of games.
