Seriously, I'm a 35 year old man who trains for triathlon, and if I'm as worked up as I am about this game, imagine what it must be doing to that old man's ticker. God bless, Bo. Pull through, old man. Watch the only game that will rival your victory over Ohio in 1969.

The guy who runs triathalons is right. I haven't been able to concentrate all week at work. It must be troture for Bo. I've been in BO's locker room after Michigan loses and wins agains Ohio State both home and away. I can tell you from watching him after those games, he takes this game more seriously than anyone in the world. Our prayers are with you Coach and seriously hang in there for one more game.

I had the great pleasure of meeting and interviewing Bo for about half an hour one-on-one last year before the Michigan-OSU game. He could not have been nicer, even though he knew that I was writing for an OSU-centered publication.
He was fantastic again at interviews on Monday this week.
He's a truly great guy, and everyone should be pulling for him to make it through, regardless of which school you're rooting for tomorrow.

I agree, I'm telling you right now the Coach is hanging on for this one. Bottom line I want him around for alot longer. But I also want him to be able to see Alan Branch, Lamarr Woodley, David Harris and the rest of the crew break Troy Smiths neck. I want him to be able to see Mike Hart go for 220+ and claim the Heisman. I want him to see two or three more deep routes to Mario Manningham. Michigan Football would not be what it is today with out The Coach.

First, Red Auerbach. Now -- potentially -- Bo Schembechler.
Not a good couple of weeks for those of us with an eye toward the legendary.
ESPN Classic has already slated a whole afternoon of OSU-Michigan games for its College Football Roadshow. Should things turn for the worse, the programmers over there put together some extra Woody-Bo games instead of the recent vintages of the rivalry.
Seems like the best way to honor a man that has meant so much not only for a University, but also the game itself.

I loved Bo before I even understood football. I used to run around in sweatshirt with Bo's face on it and remember crying before the 1983 Rose Bowl when someone on TV picked Michigan to lose.
This is like Thomas Jefferson and John Adams dying on July 4.
I'm a wreck.
But part of me would like to think that Bo did this for motivational purposes.

I'm just gutted.
I big part of my love for the U of M extends from the fact that my aunt was Bo's secretary back at Miami of Ohio. I grew up hearing about this legendary coach. That's how a 10-year-old from New Jersey ends up reading books like "Bo and Woody and the 10-year War."
My head also hurts from thinking about how this game somehow just became an even bigger story. Andrew is right, this only happens in bad sports movies.
RIP, Bo. Hope there's a nice recliner and a remote waiting for you up there tomorrow.

Thanks to Bo for building a football program committed to representing the university he loved in the best way possible. First and foremost, we take pride in the football team because we know in our hearts that the coaches and players understand what a privilege and honor it is to represent the University of Michigan. This understanding, of the importance of representing the university with class and dignity, was instilled by Bo and has been reinforced by Lloyd and Bo's other disciples. That we, the U of M family, will be always be proud of our football team and the young men who play for it, will be Bo's lasting legacy .

Think of all the glorious victories this team has given us (and the defeats, too). Then think of all the people you shared those moments with over the course of your lifetimes.....

Thanks, Bo...just... thanks for everything, I guess....

Dont' know if this makes tomorrow less important or more important.
Though I can't think of any ceremony funeral or otherwise that would be a more appriorate celebration of him and his life than tomorrow's game.
Being a UM alumnus from NY I wasnt following Michigan when Bo was coaching. But even from someone who got the history of what he meant to our program and to college football secondhand, its crystal clear that a game of this magnitude wouldnt be possible without him.
Thoughts, prayers, etc. are with him and his family. Thanks for everything

Bo gave the MMB a pep talk at the start of the 2004 season. The staff got him to talk once every four years so each class got to hear him once. His talk was inspired and passionate, and he ended it by screaming the following, which was nearly drowned out by cheers:
"YOU MUST OUTPLAY OHIO STATE!"

As a kid who grew up a mile away from the stadium and walked to all the games with my Mom since I was 8 years old, the maize and blue runs deep here even though I didn't go to school there.
In 1984 my High School team (AA Pioneer) won the state title in football. I was down in the athletic office waiting to do an interview on for the news at a post-game celebration rally when in walked Bo Schembechler. When I introduced myself and shook his hand I felt my voice stammer and the air in my lungs deflate. Even today - I can say it's the most nervous I've ever been in my entire life.
For me, Bo has always been much larger than life. A truly great man that helped signigicantly shape many lives of young men in a wonderfully positive and tough-minded way (including some of my HS football teamates).
RIP Bo, we love you - and Go Blue!!

From everyone's favorite ironically-named punk band:
BO SCHEMBECHLER: OSU'S MOST VALIANT FOE: The band is crushed to learn of the death of Bo Schembechler. We named this band after Coach Schembechler to honor him as the face of Wolverine football. We have never wished ill will upon him in any way and have always wished him the best. When we learned that Bo had seen our web site and was amused by it we were delighted. We were simply delighted. He said to those with him as he read it, "See, I still matter in Columbus!" That may have been the greatest understatement in football history. We believe that he took the band's name as the compliment that it was meant as and that he was flattered by it. We wish to extend our deepest and most heartfelt sympathies to his family. We are truly sorry for their loss.

Man, I'm taking this very badly. If it happened in the middle of spring it would still be hard to take. But on the eve of the biggest game ever, it's just too much emotion to contain. It's a blessing that the game isn't in AA this year -- the game would be akin to a wake with 110,000 in attendance.

Bo's last season was my frosh year at UM... although I never knew him personally, I cannot help but feel overwhelmed with sadness and grief. In a strange sort of way, I almost don't even care about the game tomorrow right now. He's tied to many childhood memories of mine, watching UM football with family... and in a way, he seemed almost invincable. Bo's death today is a lost living link to my past and a reminder of my own mortality.

I first met Bo when I was about 8 or 9 years old when he visited our elementary school with a legion of UM athletes. I just want to reflect that there are a lot of classy coaches in college football (the bear, darrell royal, etc), and we were extremely lucky to have a class act guide our program and athletic dept for so many years. Let's think of this for a moment as they do in New Orleans when they have a funeral - a celebration of having been touched by his life.

I can only hope that the concert will be cancelled. Even through the "classless" feelings many of us fans have, I for one am holding out my dwindling hope in humanity that the band are more compassionate than that. I hope, with the band name and song titles, that there is some semblence of mutual respect in the tongue-in-cheek barbs tossed over the border. But again, I can only hope...

"Last night, we lost (former Michigan Quarterback) Tom Slade...
There are some things that are more important than this game Saturday"

I was working in the press box at Ohio Stadium when Michigan won there in 2000. Going through the notes, trying to suppress the mile-wide grin that was trying to come out, Bo walked down the stairs next to where I was sitting. I half-turned and said as loud as I could get away with, "We got 'em again, coach!" He slapped me on the back and said "We sure did!"
We'll miss ya, Bo.

My nickname when I was a kid was Little Bo, given to me by my gym teacher for the never-ending string of Michigan shirts I wore, one emblazoned with an iron-on of Bo. I didn't daydream of playing for Michigan as a kid, I wanted to coach them. Because of Bo. He was John Wayne, bigger than life.
I graduated from UM in 2001. But that was just a piece of paper. I was maize and blue since I can remember, because of Bo.
Today my hero died, and I'm pretty numb.
Thanks for everything, Bo.

Even though I'm too young to remember Bo's coaching days, I am well aware of everything that he meant to the program.
If not for Bo, the scene that is "Michigan Football" would not bear any resemblance to what it does today.
God bless you, Bo.

I just remember the "Bo Knows" paraphenalia that populated UM fans in the late 80's/early 90's. I'm sorry you guys lost your icon. It's a tough day for college football as a whole.
God Bless.

Do you think Ufe was up in Heaven this morning saying, "Bring out the cookies, Millie... Daddy's coming home..."?
Somehow, the idea of this is the only thing that's made me smile this afternoon...

Don, Thanks for summing it up. Unlike you, I grew up wanting to play for him, but like Dan Rather said, "What I lacked in size I also lacked in speed". Even though I never made it on to the field as a player, asipiring to his standard of excellence made me a better person.
Goodbye, Bo

RIP Bo. I know that this years football team doesn't need any more motivation for tomorrow, but I really hope the the boys of maize and blue win this game for you, the man who shaped Michigan football. You will be truly missed. :(

Goodbye, Bo. You are a legend of American sport and will be sorely missed. And I say this as a fan of both Notre Dame and Ohio State. Any Buckeye who knows much about the history of the OSU-Mich rivalry will know that it is what it is today because of Woody and Bo and, I say God bless the both of them for it. We should all imagine the two friends and rivals watching The Game together tomorrow and smile for it. A legend at Michigan, an alumnus of Ohio State, and a native son of Ohio. My sympathies go out to the Schembechler and Michigan families.

Nice to see the those guys are true to the spirit of the game, respecting their enemy. I never was offended by their band, I was honored that they were so motivated to do what they do.
I learned about Bo passing today at work, and was lost. The face of Michigan football(when I became a fan) is gone.
I really hope they don't schlock it up on the pre game tomorrow.
Go Blue.

I am an Ohio State fan, born and raised in Columbus. I feel a big loss in the passing of Bo. No one understood, or embraced the enormity of the Ohio State Michigan rivalry like Bo and Woody.
Bo was a great coach, a class act, and a great person, and I am sad to see him pass without a chance to see this historic game. He would have enjoyed it.
I have read the transcript from his press conference earlier this week. What fire and emotion and great answers.
God bless him and his family.

If Bo is not a winner, I never saw one and I should know. He beat me the last three games we played. We've fought and quarreled for years but we're great friends.
-Woody Hayes
This is an awful loss. But you just know that the two men who took this rivalry to the next level will be looking down on this one..
