Dammit, I knew I should have sent Pryor that Manga video I made starring him.

Thecond again. Dammit, I bet Dex is really Mark May.

I probably shouldn't have included the scene where gets gang-raped by a band of magical polar bears, but live and learn.

Gravatar I wonder if this will make Barnes waiver a bit. I mean 'Bama was also high on his list and they are in need of LB's after Johns gets kicked off the team. He might be able to step in and start at 'Bama.....
Wonder if Saban is putting on his "snake oil" salesmans hat....

Gravatar This is not exactly unfair tactics on our part but more of an error on their part. Either they coached the center to do the hand thing or the kid was doing it himself and their coaches never noticed. Either way it was their own fault.

I.just.can't.get.over.this.

I really need help, because stuff like that makes me want to go HulkSmash! on anyone and everyone around me.

Gravatar "...Jonathan Stewart, who you may remember from such runs as "Aaargh," "Aaaargh not again," "I want to die," and "How many points do they have now?"

Correction:
Stewart starred in "Aaargh," and "Aaaargh not again," but I believe Dixon had the lead role in "How many points do they have now?"

Gravatar I'm re-posting. I'm not about to let this Jospeh creep steal on me.

hey big gay heart, to be honest, I don't give a damn what you can and can't stand...it was just a SIMPLE question...for every "three star" recruit we snap up, USC is out there hammering 5 stars and 4 stars, you may think it doesn't matter, but it does...period. I understand that the evaluation can go up, but that's like dating a girl who is heavy and saying eh, she will lose weight. why not snap up the 10 while you have the chance...when you start dating, ill teach you that

Take off the homer glasses, cream pie.

1. No school can just snatch up 5 stars at will. It's not like RR and Co. are going out of their way to not recruit 5 stars so that we can stack our roster with 3 stars. You recruit players you think are good for your system, your program, and your team. I assure you, RR knows more about talent evaluation and team chemistry than you.

2. If you really think stars matter at this point in the recruiting process, you're a god damned chimpanzee walking around in a human suit. A lot of these kids haven't been featured players on their teams and a lot will improve in the upcoming season. As the hype grows, so does the star rating.

3. I hate this line: "We are Michigan, shouldn't we be settling for a LOT better?" I mean, while we are on the topic of what Michigan "deserves,' doesn't it deserve more intelligent fans than yourself? You're in buck stache territory with your current line of reasoning.

4. Chris Jospeh, I hate you.

Gravatar Regarding the reading of the center's stance: it's pretty clear to me that this is an intentional tendency that they'd worked hard on establishing throughout the season just so that they can break the pattern on one marvelous play during the Ohio State game. This is the DeBord theory of planned predictability and brings to mind the half-back shuffle of recent years. The point is that they can afford to spot a team like Northwestern the advantage of making this read in order to gain the advantage of having Ohio State making false reads. You may think it's silly, but this type of genius is probably the main reason that ten years out Mike DeBord is coaching it up in "the league" while Gary Barnett and John Cooper are now has-beens.

Gravatar Ooooooh, sarcasm!

Gravatar I only vaguely watched the recruiting argument in the previous thread, but I have a few questions for the people who freak out about landing "only" a few 3* recruits:

1. What makes you think that RichRod is refusing 5* recruits?

2. Who do you think fills out a depth chart on USC's or Michigan's roster...more 4* and 5* recruits, or 2* and 3* recruits?

3. Have you not been paying attention to the other 4* and 5* recruits that Michigan is in the running for?

...

Of all the things to freak out about, landing 3* recruits is not one of them. Personally, I am waaaaay freaked out that Carr/RichRod/Michigan can't seem to sign a DE. So if you want to be freaked out, then worry about that.

That.Is.All.

Gravatar It was the fullback shuffle - not the half back shuffle. Now please lets never speak of that again.

Gravatar david harris. linebacker. 3-star recruit. one of our best, and killed it as a rookie in the league.

clearly, its better to have the higher rated talent, but for serious... freaking out because michigan just got commitments from two 3-star recruits is a bit much.

Gravatar Personally, I am waaaaay freaked out that Carr/RichRod/Michigan can't seem to sign a DE.

I reserve the right to freak out about this on Feb 1, 2009. Until then, I'll freak out about other stuff like the fact that "Space Chimps" opens in less than a month. They're chimps. And they're in space. YEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!

Gravatar Matt Millen and Rod Marinelli think that David Harris is too slow to be an effective MLB in the NFL.

Gravatar okay big gay heart...hate away....but saying that michigan deserves more intelligent fans, is unfair...

let's call a truce and actually turn in this into a constructive convo huh?

I hate to say it, but I agree, i AGREE with you about the number of stars. It is complete nonsense, and to be honest, who cares, I agree. While I am willing to agree to this, are you willing to agree that we need to have some sort of "test" or "gauge" to rate these guys? Do you think a fair way of doing that is looking at other schools who have offered them scholarships?

Let's just look at Peace, okay? Here is a kid who is FROM TEXAS, and he doesn't have an offer from the U of Texas. Doesn't that strike anybody as a little odd? You think Mack Brown just missed him? You think Mack Brown usually lets great in state talent escape without a scholarship offer?

I would seriously like to get your thoughts on this. I am NOT saying we should only go after guys who have a plethora of big time offers, I am just saying we should watch out for red flags...and to me, no offer from Texas is a flag. what do you think? is it irrelevant?

and ps all the hate on the blog, why does everybody hate everybody...that bs should stop

Gravatar deutschland uber alles!!! bow down little turkish brother!!!

Gravatar To continue the "Rich Rod loses the big game" topic, in the most mannered way I can manage:

The way I see it, if you're a successful coach, your team will play in a number "big games". These big games are alomst, by definition, played against a good team, or at least a rival. Because they are played against good teams, or rivals, the liklihood of a loss increases.

I don't believe that there is a "wins big games" gene. Lloyd Carr won a Rose Bowl, a NC, and owned OSU. Then, he lost 2 Rose bowls, and got owned by OSU. Did he once have this "skill", then magically lose it? Or is it a crapshoot?

Tressell has owned UM (a "big game"), but gotten trounced in two straight NC games. Does he have a flawed "big game" gene?

Saban won a NC, and since going to Alabama, has been owned for straight years by Auburn, his chief rival.

Stoops won a NC and used to dominate Texas. Recently, their bowl record is dismal, and they get whipped by Texas.

Is this really a skill, or a crapshoot?

Gravatar Matt Millen thinks lead paint is a tasty snack and Rod Marinelli thinks the 2002 Tampa Bay Buccaneers can win the NFC North in 2008, so yeah.

Gravatar Who cares if he isn't highly rated. We can't just have only 4* and 5* players on the team. It's assuming that every recruit will eventually play. 3* scrubs are fine to have. We still need depth. Besides, maybe he could end up being a breakout star.

Gravatar Call me crazy but wasn't 2007 Saban's first year?

Gravatar I was going to be all spelling-Nazi about "sluff" being "slough" but according to Merriam-Webster.com, it's a variant. I still don't like it.

Carry on.

Gravatar I thought it was his 2nd. But I think my overall point is clear.

Gravatar Yeah 2007 was his first year at 'Bama - but point taken.

Gravatar Saban has only been at Bama for a year. He's 0-1 against Auburn. I was thinking about this during the 2007 season. Msot great coaches drop a game. Even Pete Carroll lost to Stanford. They get blindsided by the ones they don't expect e.g. Texas Tech, UCLA. Drop too many and that's a cause for concern. I am just surprised that WVU dropped the big one against Pitt. And remember, USC lost to UCLA last year. They would have gone to the BCS champ game. USC fans aren't screaming that the sky is falling.

Gravatar @Cujo:

The thing is, NOBODY was onto this guy until he showed up at their camp. Not Kansas, not A&M, nobody. He's being wasted in an offense that apparently never throws the ball, but when he's had a chance to workout for people he's impressed. According to the guys at Scout (and this was said last week before he commited) he caught EVERYTHING that came his way. You can't teach hands.

Gravatar First, one thing I can't take is just how often Rich refers to himself in the third person. That is such a bad habit, someone needs to break him of it, it's tough to listen to him say "Rich Rodriguez" over and over.

Rich Rodriguez has Ricky Henderson disease?

Gravatar "You can't teach hands."

No, but you can hold hands. And, I thought Joseph's conciliatory remarks were beautiful.

Gravatar Ah, third-person disease. Years ago, Terry Foster wrote a column about athletes referring to themselves in the third person, and in the middle of the column, he said, "Terry Foster does not like that." I laughed out loud. Is it bad that Terry Foster made me laugh?

Gravatar We should remember that Barnes is a WR in a high school offense that rarely throws. He had 17 catches last year. That is likely the main reason for his lack of exposure. How many highlight can you have when you're involved in 17 plays?

That said, the kid showed up as a relative unknown, as the Ninja says, to 3 camps, and impressed everyone enough at every single one to get an offer. Observers felt he was both the best WR AND CB at our one-week camp. And there were 4-star recruits at both positions there.

Gravatar Chi town I agree with your points on the big game, my biggest point comes from a 3-7 Pitt team. It'd be one thing if the team WVU lost to had a winning record but 3-7. Meh.

As for Chris Joseph. All schools get guys between 3-5 stars and this conversation is tough to have. His point is well taken, how does a Texas guy escape Mack Brown? Maybe he's slow, which makes him a 3 star. This whole conversation wouldn't be happening if Mich was pulling all 4 and 5 star guys, but they're not so we hold out hopes high for the 3 and 2 star guys. The loud voice of opinion seems to be that recruiters don't know anything. That's not true. The biggest point lost in all of this is development. 5 stars are better than 3 stars at this moment, period. Whether it be size, strength or speed they are better. However where they go in three years is up to coaches and the player. Ryan Mallet was a 5 star guy based on size and arm, he was tops behind claussen, but clearly he had no touch at all. He has to develop. The rating system is accurate, it's no coincidence that USC gets the best recruits and wins like crazy. The majority of it is what happens after they get on campus.

Gravatar Chitownblue has Rickey Henderson disease, and he badly needs help.

Gravatar It's not as simple as "5 stars are better than 3 stars, period". They are more likely to be better.

That said, plenty of 3-stars turn into good players. That's not saying scout and rivals don't know shit. That means that they haven't personally scouted every player out there, and Peace is a kid with very few stats to back him up. The impressions he's made have been made at camps - and the coaches at those seem to be almost uniformly impressed.

Gravatar Good points guys, I mean we always go back to the Mike Hart thing....bottom line is he had some big time offers, from Virginia to Miami...3 stars or not, the offers don't lie, ya know? That's all I am saying.

Gravatar Oh, and speaking of laughs, be sure to check out Autumn Thunder's triumphant return. I'm Sgt. Wolverine, and I endorse AT's triumphant return.

Gravatar Given Peace's 17 catches last year it's surprising he's even got 3* at this point. There are plenty of commits at top schools that are NR right now.

Gravatar ...It'd be one thing if the team WVU lost to had a winning record but 3-7?

But it's a 3-7 team AND their biggest rival. It's not a random 3-7 team. They're completely different things.

As for the WR thing, there's a little bit of speculation out there, meaning Tom Beaver hasn't said but has hinted, that one of the 5* WRs is a "Super Silent Double Secret Ninja Commit". By that I mean he has been told we will be throwing more than DickRod did at WVU, and if he sees proof of this during the season he'll commit to us. It's speculation so take it fwiw. To me it's worth at least 3 semis a week.

Gravatar No coach offers a kid expecting him to ride the pine.

Granted, one player vs another might be better in your scheme, or have a slightly different skill set.

But, make no mistake, RR offered this kid expecting him to play. At some point a situation will arise where RR will need him to fill a need on the field. There is no point in offering a kid as "back-up" or to "fill the roster".

Everyone can argue about the offense he is in and the lack of game tape vs his performance in person vs rivals prediction ability (all of which I can see as valid arguments)...

...but what it comes down to is RR saw the kid in person and thinks he can play, therefore the offer.

*******************************

And as for 5*s, it would be sweet to get 10 per year so that we could win the NC every year like USC... Oh wait....

Gravatar Chris,

I understand that those other offers are from perceived "less than" schools ,but, to be fair, its not like Texas A&M is garbage or anything. They do hover around the top 25 in most years.

Gravatar Chris Joseph tapped out

Gravatar Maybe Peace is actually really good. He's apparently impressed at every camp he's attended.

Who the fuck are we to complain about this class so far? It's shaping up to be as good as any of Lloyd's and as good as anyone else's in the country.

If we get a couple more highly ranked kids (and we will) - guess what, our class is as good as OSU's. They may look better now, but now and Feb. 06 aren't the same thing.

Please removes your fists from your assholes. Things will be ok.

Gravatar You know, I'm interested in seeing what RR can do on the 'field'. In the meantime I'm thinking about how sweet my dynasty is going to be on NCAA 09- nobody gonna see the EMU Hurons coming.

And the **** conversation makes me want to poke my eyes out with an effing fork.

Gravatar Isn't EMU the Eagles?

Gravatar BGH,

I agree with virtually everything you say, but, to say that our recruiting class is as good as anyone else's in the country is an overstatement. Ohio State's class is terrific thus far as well as a couple of other schools. I do agree that rankings don't mean a whole lot right now, though.

Gravatar i didnt tap out...but saying stuff like "i hope you burn in hell" (huss) and "i hate you" is stupid. I mean yet we speak of intelligence

Gravatar The type of people freaking out about our recruiting class when we are like 8 months from signing day are the same people who will freak out the first time we punt this year.

They aren't going to be happy - no matter who the coach is - unless we sign 25 5* kids a year and win every game. And if that did happen, they would freak out we didn't sign the RIGHT 5* prospects, that we didn't beat Purdue by enough points, that Sparty is really threatening in-state recruiting because they signed a 4* who would have been 7th on our depth chart, and that Tennessee might add seats and leave us 1,000 behind them in the capacity race.

The fact of the matter is that the Chris Joseph's and Mike Hart's Flapping Mouths of the world will never, ever, be satisfied with anything unless all elements of risk, unknown, and possible disappointment are removed.

They play Madden against the Rookie CPU, they disable offsides in NHL 94, they read spoilers for every movie before they go, and they collapse whenever change is mentioned around them.

These are the people the revolution is eliminating, one by pitiful one.

Gravatar no no, you tapped it out, it's cool. jk xoxoxoxoxo.

Gravatar Cujo:

I for one, find your brand of biting commentary fantastic. Despite it's 'girl-fightishness'

Gravatar ...And the **** conversation makes me want to poke my eyes out with an effing fork.
Son Of Zoltan | 06.25.08 - 2:58 pm | #

The only solution to this is to stick wine corks on your fork like they did in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Or just poke one out and wear an eye patch with a big block M on it, that'd be sweet, too.

@Jay:
Our avg. stars are the same as the Buckeyes, thus no overstatement.

Gravatar dex i truly, truly pray for you

Gravatar Jay,

Well, my point is that it's shaping up to be. I think it certainly has the potential to as good as anyone's in the country; although, obviously, it's nowhere near OSU or Texas' currently.

And, what's the difference between the #2 ranked class and the #10? A couple guys with a higher star ranking?

This point has been hashed and rehashed, but these class rankings are general indicators. The level of precision that many people are looking for just isn't - and won't ever - be there.

Gravatar chris joseph: texas didn't offer mcguffie and stonum either; did you freak out when they committed to um?

Gravatar Just to further Ninja's point, OSU Avg *s = 3.78, U-M Avg *s = 3.81. I don't entirely expect this to hold up through Feb, but at this point there's no evidence to the contrary.

Gravatar Ninja,

I get the star average thing. I'm talking about number of top 250 players and others things like that. I'm not bitching about it either, btw. Considering that O Stae is coming off of 2 straight NT game appearances and have been the class of the Big 10 for the last few years, its to be expected. I am very pleased with what RR and Co. have done thus far, minus D-line recruiting.

Gravatar Yes, let's talk about McGuffie.

Who's gonna freak if he doesn't hurdle three guys on the way to the house on his first carry this year?

Gravatar what level of ball did mcguffie play in hs?

Gravatar Also, my comment is less directed at Jay and more at the "OMG, tUoOSU is kickin our ass in recruiting, what the f@$&!" crew.

Gravatar @ MHFM: The highest division in Texas.

Gravatar Perhaps the most important theme in sports is the ability to overcome the odds. We see it all the time, from Curtis Granderson to Hank Zetterberg to Tom Brady.

The "experts" overlooked these people and they became much better than anticipated.

The self-proclaimed demigods of talent evalaution are often very, very, very wrong for a variety of reasons. Competition levels are often unquantifiable, players are sometimes hamstrung by the machina of "scheme," and soemtimes there are a bunch of behind the scenes personal issues that impact perofrmance in thelimited scenario.

So, why do we look at Tom Lemming or Beaver or any of these guys as braintrusts? They are just slighlt creepy dudes who don't have the foresight that we so often afford to them.

Gravatar The idea is the same as what we were talking about earlier.

Team gets a lot of 5* = will probably be good, but could lose any single given game because that's how sports are.

Player rated highly or lowly = will probably perform to expected talent level, but any single given athlete may be much better or worse because that's how sports are

Gravatar IIRC, Braylon and Hart were both 3*s. As noted above, Harris was also a 3*. Alex "Yes, I'll supersize that always, there's no need to ask next time" Mitchell was a 4* (#80 Rivals).
Everyone needs to calm down re: stars.
That is all.

Gravatar Ill Communications,

Maybe they'll throw batteries at him then jump onto the field and punch Rich Rod in the face.

Gravatar hey js, stonum and mcguffie were also both rated FOUR stars...that's the point...oh and stonum also had offers from silly, small schools like USC, Tennessee, bama, Florida, and Florida State....I don't see colorado state on that list.

Mcguffie? ND, USC, and Cal....i mean are you really comparing Peace to these two?

Gravatar CUJO, maybe you take matters into your own hands and plant some crack rocks on Peace ala Nick "Bad As I Wanna Be" Saban.

Gravatar yo big gay heart, NOW we are talking!!!

Fuck peace! (jk)

Gravatar I heard RRod promised Peace the #1.

Gravatar I heard Peace has a brother named Warren.

I'm an idiot.

Gravatar I heard Peace has a brother named Warren.

I'm an idiot.
MRG | 06.25.08 - 3:17 pm | #

Actually, his name is Hair.

Gravatar I see Cujo's point, three star who nobody seems interest in. That said since we're talking about recruitting, how is Notre Dame plucking QBs and RBs from Cali?

Gravatar I think we should all calm down and give Peace a chance.

(I'm an idiot, too.)

Gravatar ...The type of people freaking out about our recruiting class when we are like 8 months from signing day are the same people who will freak out the first time we punt this year.

DID YOU SAY "PUNT"?!!! WE'RE GOING TO FUCKING PUNT? OH THAT'S JUST FUCKING FANTASTIC- WHY DIDN'T WE JUST HIRE PUNTY PUNTERSON TO BE OUR COACH. AT LEAST LLOYD HAD THE BALLS TO TELL MALLET TO FUMBLE INSTEAD OF PUNT. JESUS, WE SHOULD'VE HIRED LESLIE FUCKING MILES.

Gravatar Peace of Shit

Gravatar okay, other chris, that is just funny....

real funny, and mike harts flapping mouth, ND recruits well in cali bc fat chuck CHEATS...just like he did in new england

Gravatar A cousin named Cod?

Gravatar Don Imus is infuriated with Rich Rod for recruiting a couple of black quarterbacks.

Gravatar Tom Brady is God, therefore there is no overcoming the odds.

Gravatar Tom Brady was like yeah, I'm the Golden Boy and I'm gonna succed against all Gods.

Gravatar Thank you.

I'm just disappointed Brian didn't use that in response to your letter.

Gravatar man these other chris guys are wanna bes

Gravatar 'scuse me, but this Other Chris has been here for a year.

Gravatar wtf is going on?

Gravatar Saying chuck weis cheats taints brady's legacy.

Gravatar man these other chris guys are wanna bes
The cool Chris | 06.25.08 - 3:24 pm | #

......And chicks, too.

Women, actually. Or A woman. I don't know O.C., would you call yourself a "chick", I never have gotten the correct protocol on that word.

Gravatar Daddy gets the big Peace of chicken

Gravatar My backpack's got jets
Well I'm Boba the Fett
Well I bounty hunt for Jabba Hutt
To finance my 'Vette

Gravatar The simple fact remains, Brady is two, count them TWO catches away from having 5 rings.

Gravatar I think I'm too old to be a chick.

But I do thank you for your concern.

Gravatar @ninja: which ones, i mean they got screwed in Denver too.

Gravatar "Chick" is a mindset dear, not an age. I think you're a chick, which is totally a compliment.

Gravatar MHFH,

What legacy would that be? Having half of our idiot fanbase booing him and calling for Henson to be the full time starter? Or, the idiot O coordinator waits until the team goes down by 14 not once but twice in the Orange Bowl before allowing him t throw the fucking ball? It would be nice for the new staff to reach out to Brady and try to get him more involved in the program.

Gravatar I'm straight but I'd give Brady a handjob, no questions asked.

Gravatar You rarely get to touch greatness. But jerk it off? That's once in a couple hundred lifetimes.

Gravatar new post.

Gravatar handjob? dude, why stop there, he can have me anyway he wants...and yes, im straight too

Gravatar Brady actually rides with ND now because of Weis which is too bad. At least he said he does when they play each other.

Gravatar @MHFM:

Eh, Brady played kinda poorly against Denver. He threw that INT to Champ for the pic 6, and they pretty much deserved to lose that one.

I'd count the Reche Caldwell "Deion Branch would've made that catch in a coma" drop, with which the Colts most likely never come back, and the Asante samuel dropped interception against the Giants from this year.

Gravatar My Boston Jihad forces me to correct Ninja (but I’ll do it in a non active comment section.) I believe Brady only has 3 rings (Rams, Eagles, Carolina.) It is unclear what 2 catches would get him to 5 rings. 3 rings is pretty damn good (only Bradshaw has more at QB) so stretching it with woulda/coulda/shoulda isn’t necessary.

I feel the need to note that the Patriots cheated for most of Brady’s career. This included Weis. These facts are not contested. The Pats never admitted what EXACTLY they were doing so we do not know how much the cheating helped. However, they won 3 Super Bowls and that’s pretty good.

Gravatar +1000 for the multiple personality guy calling me a racist based on the usage of BRAH. That's a new one I was never ready for.

Gravatar Hey - the asterisk in the post was never explained!

Gravatar Regarding the 1995 NW picking off the center's tendancies.... Was that the year that Rod Payne broke his hand and had to snap with his other hand? Or was that 96...I always thought it was 96 and maybe he changed his stances due to this...maybe it was 96 and the NW guy is mistaken and actually it was the 96 film he broke down to see it.

anyone remember that injury?
