Gravatar Boeckman should be okay. He's got good size, a decent arm and decent mobility. The Krenzel comparisons are probably fairly accurate. He has also been in the program forever as a fifth-year junior (grayshirt, redshirt, and two seasons of backup duty under his belt) so there's little question that he knows the system.

Even if it falls to Schoenhoft I don't think you're looking at a Sophomore John Navarre-type season.

Henton is a project, and as you said, the Troy Smith comparisons aren't particularly flattering if you're talking about Troy early in his career.

It will be a dropoff from last year's QB play, but Tressel has demonstrated that he can win with a variety of offensive styles.

If Chris Wells hangs on to the ball this year, OSU should be in the 9 or 10 win range.

Gravatar Dam....ND will get obliterated this season. No exp qb, rb, ol, or wr...

Yeah Tood looked good dude behind that patchwork o-line. He's been here 5 years so he better be decent. Henton looked ok but it didn't help that his O-line was basically sieving all over the place.....

How does Mich defense look especially the secondary and de's?????

Gravatar I have a friend that played in Shoenhoft's class at St. X who was of the opinion that he was not only vastly overrtated, but just plain bad. I saw him play his senior year, and the only thing that impressed me was how long he laid on the turf pouting after he got sacked.

Gravatar Where's Wisconsin preview??? You own PSU, Wisky on the other hand...

Gravatar Wisconsin is something like 1-8 in their last nine versus Michigan.

Gravatar Remember SoJ is an OSU fan, for whom football statistics weren't recorded prior to 2001.

Gravatar HAHAHAHAHA.

Excellent, Jeremy.

Gravatar Brian,

I want to wallow in the glow the football team's scorched-earth campaign through September, October and November (after that, my memory goes blank). I see the drop-down menu to the "blog archive" in the right sidebar, but it doesn't appear to be interested in taking me anywhere. I select "September," and nothing happens. I'm using Firefox 1.5.0.11. Any advice?

Gravatar ::ahem::

Wisconsin?

Gravatar I think SOJ was projecting the bucks problems with Wisky on us! OSU is 2 and 4 versus Wisky in the last 6 games. Inexplicably, not scheduled in 2005, 2006, and 2007. Not wanting to say anymore because of the obvious retort from the nuts!

Gravatar re: archive... weird. I'll look into that.

re: Wisco. They return virtually everyone, Everidge and Donovan are neck and neck for the QB job. There isn't much else to decide.

Gravatar That Wayne Drehs column didn't make any sense to me, either. Why wouldn't Charlie want a clear candidate to emerge, even if it is in a senseless spring game? Evan Sharpley had a great Blue-Gold last year, too, and we trusted him enough to run out of bounds on fourth down against you folks.

Gravatar RW: OSU plays Wisconsin this fall. They just rotated off the conference schedule for the last two years.

Gravatar Wisconsin has been a thorn in OSU's side. The great Jim Tressel (super genius) is a mere 1-3 during his tenure. Over that same period, Lloyd (clearly Tressel's inferior by all accounts) is 3-1. Who would have thunk it?

Gravatar Did Clausen arrive to the game/practice in a limousine and walk to the sideline on a red carpet?

Gravatar Dam, I just thought Wisky returning the whole team and da internet's and pundits buzzing about the upcoming carnage they will bring upon Ann Arbor, Columbus, and Happy Valley would be worth keeping an eye on, thats all.

Gravatar Even since last off-season, OSU fans I know have been saying it's Boeckman. Don't know if it's true, but I remember reading (during his recruitment) that Schoenhoft was benched from his HS games for ... well ... sucking. How often do QBs who are benched their senior year in HS wind up choosing between OSU and Michigan?

Guys must be the Alain Kashama of QBs.

Gravatar I'll bet you a case of beer Chris Rogers doesn't see a snap unless the game is out of hand. He looked good in the BW game, but he was abusing a fourth string freshman tackle all day. Evans, Maybin, and Gaines are ahead of him on the depth chart.

Gravatar Rivals reporting Legion to Kentucky.

Gravatar NOw for some fun...check this out fellas

http://texarkanasportsblog.com/a...com/archives/ 54

I mean, is this guy even serious, when will this shit end??after Ryan graduates from M and goes to the pros? or would he be contemplating transfer even when he is a fourth year senior starting QB at M!!

Gravatar That was from the Victors Board!!

Gravatar Re: ND QBs

Clausen was probably better than the numbers would indicate. He was 3-of-7, but two incompletions were throwaways that were universally praised for avoiding sacks, and one was a dropped pass by normally reliable TE John Carlson. As noted, he also 'looked' good and comfortable, for whatever that's worth.

Reading between a lot of lines in Weis' press conference and the ND boards/blogs, I actually expect Clausen to win the job, with Jones as the #2. I had previously thought it would be Sharpley. (While Sharpley's passing number look okay, he also lost 38 yards on sacks, for a total of -7).

The bigger concerns are OL and WRs. 8 of 11 completions went to the tight ends. The WRs could not get any separation. As mentioned, Clausen was under a lot of pressure, Sharpley got sacked several times, and that despite blitzes being outlawed for the day. Even so, with a 'sack' being two-hand touch, pass protection might not be too big a problem, and the running game looked really good with all RBs averaging at least 4 ypc. And while Brian loathes the 'Charlie Weis, C.O.G.' (that's Certified Offensive Genius) line, you're kidding yourself if you think he won't get good to very good production out of the unit come fall.

The moral of the story? You really can't learn anything from a spring game.

Gravatar Of course you can learn things from the spring game. It's a point of evidence that comes with caveats, like any other.

Gravatar This is the worst Irish team Weis has had. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Weis and I’m sure the offense will look good in lots of games next season. I think those games will be against poor competition. I suspect ND will roll over the bad teams and get smoked against the good teams. I also suspect they will make a BCS bowl and get killed. This will leave the St. Weis crew to comment on making a BCS bowl every year. The rest of us can comment on the growing list of blow outs against good competition.

Regarding Schoenhoft, I don’t think people give Krenzel (or Dilfer) enough credit. I bet Schoenhoft isn’t even a Molecular Genetics major is he? Krenzel had a skill set as a game manager, along with Dilfer, that worked well for them. Just because it looked easy doesn’t mean any old whodat QB could do it if they have Jim Tressel whispering in their ear. Holy Buckeye, Krenzel was the leading rusher in the championship game. Try that with most passing (nominally passing) QB’s and you end up with a Drew Stanton rag doll. Ask Kyle Boller how easy it is to game manage behind the Raven’s D. OSU has some work ahead of them but I will question the memory of any UM fan who takes that game for granted.

Wisconsin succeeds in 2 areas UM has struggled at recently—OSU and big bowl games. Yet, UM has gotten the better of Wisconsin recently. Mix in the fact that Wisconsin seems to beat OSU and their bowl opponent with the same strategy that costs UM the game. There must be something to be learned here but I don’t know what it is.

Gravatar First off, Wisconsin is no threat to Michigan. They may have won 22 of their last 26 and 2 straight bowl games, but what was the best win in those 2 years: the referee-aided home win over a 9-4 Penn State team or the Capital One bowl "win" over a 10-4 Arkansas team that Wisconsin won only because Arkansas' will to lose exceeded that of Wisconsin? Then factor in that they've avoided OSU for 2 years, got obliterated in the only 2 games against good teams that they've played (2005--Penn State, 2006--Michigan), lose a veteran QB and arguably college football's best player, and the tiger (or Badger) is made increasingly of paper.

As far as PSU goes, Morelli will be very, very good this year. He made it pretty obvious that he didn't care much about his numbers in the spring game; he just wanted to have fun and throw the ball around as much as possible.

Gravatar Schoenhoft reminds me of a big-armed Craig Krenzel. He looks frightenly awful sometimes, but when the game is on the line, he rallies the troops and makes big plays. Boeckman has a much softer touch than Schoenhoft, and actually throws a nice deep ball, which will be a first in the Tressel regime. However, I'm not sure he has the moxie to lead the Bucks to more than 7 or 8 wins.

In other words, with Schoenhoft, I wouldn't be surprised to see a 2003 like season, where the offense looked like utter crap, yet they still won a BCS game. With Boeckman, I wouldn't be surprised to see a 2004 like season (a little better than that), where the Bucks look pretty much average.

Gravatar Wisconsin looks like a threat to me. We waxed them last year but we lose much more than they do, especially on defense. Also, the game is at Wisconsin in between MSU and OSU. I think it's the one game on the schedule that we are most likely to lose.

Gravatar Wisconsin is not a very talented team...especially without thomas and stocco now. Look at the last couple years of wisconsin recruiting..these guys are mostly 2/3 star players. They are well coached and play in a system well but teams like psu/michigan/ohio will kill them this year....we obliterated them last year and will do the same this year.

Our only real weakness is that secondary...I know this is old news but does anyone think that stevie brown and donovan warren have a chance at starting positions this year? I am sick of trent and it would really suck to see englemon at safety. I am hoping to see trent and warren at corner with brown and adams at safety. Any thoughts?

Lester the left handed cheetah

Gravatar RE: Notre Dame

I would suspect you are going to see a vastly different ND team this year. I think its going to be lots of running (pretend Bob Davie is coaching) with Thomas, Aldridge, Allen, and possibly Jabbie and Hughes. The WR's are a weak point but don't be shocked if you see some running backs out there at WR. When Duval Kamara arrives in the fall, he may see the lineup early at WR.

I think they will actually be solid this year, especially on defense. I expect the D to surprise a lot of people this year. This team probably has a ceiling of 9 wins and a floor of 6 wins. I would suspect losses to Michigan and USC, wins over Duke, Navy, Air Force, and Stanford with 6 tossups against Ga Tech, PSU, Purdue, MSU, BC, and UCLA. I would guess 3-3 in those 6 which puts the record at 7-5 and a mid level bowl.

Gravatar Agree with Mike -- Chris Rogers is a mere blip on the radar. The DL talent of the 2005 recruting class will keep him on the bench throughout his career. The Lions LBs & Secondary are the two strongest units on the team and figure to create a very strong D. As with last year, the team will win or lose with Morelli. With talented WRs, he needs to make the leap, lest Defenses will move the safeties up and stuff Scott into oblivion. As a biased fan, I'll be that Morelli is fairly succesful and PSU rides to a 2nd place Big 10 finish.
