Gravatar You call it refreshing, I call it shocking. It sure is different, though.

Gravatar first?

Gravatar 1st
yea.

Gravatar Paul!, you're a douche! Sorry, but this "first" crap has to end.

I am not happy to see RM go, but the kid's clearly had an attitude problem from day 1. Then again, Pryor already knows he's the shiznit, so I can only imagine what next season might be like. I'll risk it.

Gravatar It's his way of communicating with recruits and circumventing the 1 phone call rule... He was basically saying "Hey, Terelle, Guess what? Mallet is leaving, so, like, let's get this over with already."

Maybe he is coveting some WR also.

Sometime being slick has it's advantages.

Gravatar crap.

Gravatar Me? I would never say it.

Gravatar Hope this pushes Pryor towards UM. I'm still surprised Mallett isn't more interested, Rodriguez has shown great flexibility in fitting a system to his talent

Gravatar OC,

I think Coach Rod understands diplomacy, and he is being media savvy. He acknowledged he can't speak about recruits but he sure as hell sent out a clear message to recruits (ala Mr. Pryor) that the doors of opportunity are opening without leaving any doubt. Smart move and nothing unethical about it.

Gravatar Spare me the RR being slick. Where is the evidence of that? Mallett has been blubbering and working the system since day one. RR has called him on it. Shit or get off the pot.

It's very clear he has a lot of designs on recruiting in this last month and he needs the deck cleared. He said nothing to insult or hurt anyone. He is working for our future, folks, and he didn't conduct a human sacrifice or anything.

Gravatar I won't believe it is true until herbstreit confirms.

Gravatar Wow. . some Bo-like bluntness from RR. He's saying:
A. Michigan is bigger than any individual and if one, two, or all three leave, it really won't matter in the big picture. Let's light up and move along.
B. He's very very confident of getting Pryor.
Or both A and B.

Gravatar Not just Pryor. J. Baldwin might have been listening as well.

Gravatar From the Rivals article: what does it mean that RR is excited about "one recruit we have coming in"? Is he referring to Smith? Or is there some sort of mystery man he's alluding to?

Gravatar Anyone make anything of RR's comments that he has "15 or 16" recruits now? According to Rivals/Scout we have 17.

Do you think it was simply him forgetting, or him projecting that he's already lost 1-2. I know a few are less than solid.

Gravatar I rooted for LSU last night but find myself defending the Bucks and Big 10 due to douche bag Forde's article

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/c...10& sportCat=ncf

Gravatar Hello TP....

Gravatar I think Mallett has been looking for an excuse to leave for a while. There have been rumors, literally, from the time he enrolled early. I hope he goes on to do well (honestly).

As for Pryor, you gotta think it could go 50/50. Tressel can dangle the whole "we just went to 3 NCs in 6 years without you, think what we can do WITH you" in front of him, plus showing him a Heisman winner who was of a similar style. Then again, RRs system seems made for this guy.

No one guy (Mallett nor Pryor) will make or break this team or program (kind of nervous about saying that since Bush was the difference between USC going to Rose Bowls and NCs), but we will be good for 7-9 wins regardless of who is at QB next year. The hope is that RR has a solution for the year after or the year after that.

Gravatar Wow. We're not used to this kind of frankness coming from a Michigan coach. I'm not sure what to think. It's possible that he could be trying to send a back-channel message to Pryor or other potential recruits. Something just seems wrong about that, though.

In any case, Lloyd Carr has definitely left the building.

Gravatar Thank god for Threet is all I'm going to say.

$50 he's the starter next year. We're all down on him cause he was only the 9th best QB per rivals in 2007, while Mallett was 2nd. Seriously guys, Mallett probably would have played BEHIND Threet this year if Threet was eligible to play. Mallett's immature, I say let him go.

Think about it, Jimmah was the #1 prospect last year. He looks TERRIBLE out there. Sam Bradford, on the other hand, was a 3star in 2006 and the 12th overall QB. He's a stud at Oklaholma.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say I'm glad he'll prolly transfer. In high school he was under 50% completion out of a spread, he's pretty uncoachable by all accounts, and he's not fitting in too well with his teammates either it would appear. We've all fallen in love with his arm, but at the expense of forgiving the fact he's a potential Ryan Leaf style nutcase.

Remember Ryan Leaf was touted as the better player than Peyton Manning, just unpolished. If Mallett ever becomes polished then I was wrong, but I'd make the safe pick here and go with Threet.

Gravatar Personally I wanted OSU to win last night, because now that they lost, the whole "SEC is awesome" and "Big 10 sucks" thing is going around. It's bad for us too. If (hopefully when) we beat OSU next year, people can just say that the Big 10 isn't that good anyways and OSU can't even beat an SEC team, so our win would be less impressive. If they had won combined with our win over Florida, we could've shut some people up.

Gravatar did you say Carr but mean RR?

Gravatar First, Michigan is 7-1 (6-1 in bowls) in the last 10 years against the SEC. The SEC owns the Big Ten, but Michigan owns the SEC. As a Michigan fan you have rock solid proof of superiority over SEC fans, plus you have all your teeth.

Second, name the last tOSU QB to be successful in the pros? Whereas EVERY UM QB since Harbaugh (except John Navarre) has been a success in the pros. If I was Pryor, and I wanted to make it in the NFL, I'd be making a beeline to Ann Arbor.

Gravatar rr is a michigan man!!! 3 calls to a soso qb with an attitude that's not well liked by his teammates is probably 3 too many. and we will be okay even if all these guys leave. we have plenty of speed to fill receviers and backs in brown, matthews, minor and mcguife. threet will be fine and pryor fantastic if we get him.

Gravatar I agree with Meeechigan Dan. RR was sending a message to Mallet that if you don't want to be here you're free to go. While it has the benefit of getting Pryor's attention, I think this was aimed squarely at RM. And I don't understand the criticism of RR. We've got limited depth at linebacker but I'm pretty sure if RR talked to Obi Ezeh twice about staying and Ezeh remained non-committal to the point where it might negatively impact our ability to find a replacement, I think we'd all be happy if RR kicked Ezeh to the curb. Mallet shouldn't be treated any different. Even if he was a 5 star recruit. Welcome to the real world.

Gravatar I say well played, RR. If you don't like being at Michigan, you can't appreciate being at Michigan, then get the fuck out of here. That's what he's saying. And I like that.

Gravatar I stumbled across this a minute ago:

http://msn.foxsports.com/cfb/sto...651472? MSNHPHMA

Gravatar I assume his "excited about one commit" was a reference to Stonum, since he's already in school. And probably why he said 15/16 instead of 17. Almost have to consider Stonum part of the team already.

Gravatar RR's comments are awesomely reminiscent of Bo's conduct during Spring practice in 1969: get busy playing for Michigan or take a walk. Those who stay will be champions. I sincerely hope Mallett thrives wherever he goes, but he's this non-commital even after Carr has talked to him and RR has thrice recruited him, then it's probably time to mosey on.

Gravatar Second, name the last tOSU QB to be successful in the pros? Whereas EVERY UM QB since Harbaugh (except John Navarre) has been a success in the pros. If I was Pryor, and I wanted to make it in the NFL, I'd be making a beeline to Ann Arbor.

I could be wrong, but isn't Navarre a back up in New England?

Gravatar Seer: I think you're thinking of Gutierrez. Navarre was (is?) on Arizona.

Gravatar I agree that it's refreshing to hear this stuff. I hated the "fort" mentality that surrounded the program for, oh, the last 100 years. The funny thing is that we always acted like we had a bunch of state secrets to protect - and then we'd come out every week with the same old gameplan-in-a-can.

Gravatar i believe it's former U-M QB Matt Guiterrez who is a back up in New England..is Navarre not with the Cardinals anymore?

Gravatar um...Dreisbach? Henson? Collins (to a lesser extent)?

Gravatar Funny how Forde never ventured so much as a whisper about UM-Fla in his diatribe. Interesting. FWIW, looked to me like tOSU's problem last night was not speed or athletic ability. Maybe time for an OC in Columbus, no?
And I still agree with whoever said, screw tOSU. We held up our end against the SEC. If they can't finish for themselves, no skin off our nose.

Gravatar I hope people really wouldn't "down" on Threet because he was ranked 9th at his position. I mean, that's really good. How many starting NFL QBs were "ranked" lower than 9? Probably 90%?

Gravatar He also said "success" Navarre is in the pros, but I don't think we can term him a "success".

Gravatar @Seer:

Tom Tupa was successful in the NFL...as a punter I believe.

Gravatar PT, I didn't realize Ezeh was a problem. What his deal?

Gravatar This was a shot at Ryan Mallett to shit or get off the pot. RR does not need to send code messages to Pryor through the media when he has a team member in regular contact with him (Toney Clemons). Also, I think the recruiting dead period is over now that the BCS is over so he could just call him.

Gravatar I'm still not a fan of RR commenting on Manningham if he hasn't yet spoken to him. I feel like he's pushing him out the door.

Gravatar @mez-

ROFLMAO!!!!

Gravatar Last I head, Navarre was in Indy. That was after he was in Arizona.

Gravatar Come on, Gnarls. We talk about not really knowing. Manningham, who has some prima donna in him, may be playing it coy and RR wants to get banging with recruiting big time. So he calls it like he sees it. MM can walk in his office anytime and say, "Coach, I'm staying!" And RR would love that.

Gravatar My one reservation about getting TP (if we do) is that I really wanted to see RR's offensive genius applied to a different set of players and skills. I wanted to see the Brady spread, a little like in Florida. The Pat White, Tim Tebow spread, IMO, is not the best choice. Don't get me wrong, I'll take it, but I wanted to see RR challenged and to take the college spread to a new level.

Gravatar Indy waived on Navarre. He's a free agent.

Gravatar Disagree w/ an earlier poster - if RRod is saying we have 15-16 commits, I believe that means that 1-2 people have probably backed off their commitments of late. There are a couple who are taking visits, so it shouldn't be too surprising.

My guess for the commit he was particularly excited about is Daryl Stonum.

Gravatar " I won't believe it is true until herbstreit confirms."

I won't believe its true until Herbstreit denys it is.

Gravatar I think this is an interesting pressure tactic. If you're thinking about leaving after Lloyd and I have talked to you multiple times, then I'm just going to go on national TV and tell everyone you're gone. Then you can either confirm it or deny it when the reporters come knocking on your doorstep. Shit or get off the pot, son.

While I think that it might be a little harsh to do this to a 19 year old, I do think that college is all about growing up, becoming responsible for yourself, and not relying on your teachers or your coaches to protect you or pull you out of a jam. Shit or get off the pot, son- this team has work to do, with or without you.

Good luck to you, Ryan.

Gravatar Ok, I should have said QBs that started for 2 years or more. Eliminating Driesbach, Henson, and Gutierrez. Forgive me, now name a successful tOSU QB. Hell, the Cowboys threw millions at Henson just because he was at Michigan for a bit. This was after not playing QB for 5 years.

Gravatar Well said cfaller96.

Gravatar Meech Dan, I agree that MM is a bit of a prima donna, I just don't see the benefit to Manningham of "playing it coy" in this situation. I think it's possible he hasn't made up his mind yet, and wants to see how he grades out amongst NFL scouts. And I don't have any problem with that. I don't see why RR has to call him out before he knows for certain Manningham's intentions.

It's one thing with Mallett, whose hedging may actually be negatively effecting RR's ability to bring in another QB recruit. In that case, I have no problem with RR saying he's out (especially when Mallett has apparently told others in the program he's on his way out). But I'm skeptical that MM's status being up in the air is disparately effecting RR's ability to recruit.

Gravatar @Daniel L

Art Schlichter was a successful gambler while he was in the pros. And by "successful," I mean "shockingly miserable trainwreck."

Gravatar Reading Guiterrez's bio on patriots.com;

Good for him to get some snaps. "Took a knee, took a knee twice, etc. etc." Nice to see he did complete a 15yd pass to Stallworth against Miami. His only attempt though.

Gravatar I don't see why RR saying that he thinks guys are out is being perceived as him pushing kids out. He's just giving his impression. He didn't say anything definitive about any of those guys in the interview. I don't think he said they aren't welcome, and I'm sure he would be happy to keep them if they want to stick around.

Gravatar I was actually one that was schoolgirlexcited for Gutierrez at Michigan. I was pretty much excited for anyone after Navarre. Then when Henne started the first game of the season, I was like Mangino looking at fruit- "what the f--k is this s--t?"

We never really did find out why Gutierrez was so seriously hurt, did we? Something about his shoulder, right? IIRC, Fort Schembechler was pretty tight on that one.

Gravatar cfaller - didn't we ultimate find out that Gutz had a torn labrum? I thought it was something like that. Definitely a shoulder injury.

Gravatar @cfaller

I had my cousin's tickets in the student section for that game. Guy behind me said he had Gutierrez in one of his classes; said something about some intestinal issues or something like that. I do remember There were several of us also saying, "what the f--k is this s--t?".

Gravatar I believe Gutierrez had the same injury that ended Loefler's career. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Gravatar @dangdangdang

But simply giving his impression on a TV show is a form of pressure. You know the Detroit reporters are jamming calls to AA, MM, and RM now.

I agree that he's not pressuring them to leave, but I do think he's pressuring them to decide and announce. As a tactic, I'm not wild about it, but I'm not opposed to it either.

Gravatar RR isn't pushing MM/AA/RM out. Now Urban Meyer can't tell our recruits he knows for 100% sure that AA and MM are coming back and this top 10 receiver will never get to play at UM and he should come to UF (see the Stonum thing).

Gravatar And by the way, this is how recruiting is played in the 21st century. I'll be upset if we start negatively recruiting, but I see no problem with putting the team's interests ahead of individual ones.

Gravatar Shoulder injury, intestinal disturbance; same thing.

Gravatar Dreisbach (IIRC) was at least drafted and spent some time on both the Raiders and Lions rosters. Injuries greatly shortened his career.

I'm reasonably sure that every Michigan QB since Grbac has been drafted.

Gravatar Those who stay will be champions.

I know it's different for guys contemplating the pros than for guys contemplating a transfer, but RR is 100% correct about guys already at Michigan not knowing if they want to stay. If you don't like it, we'll be fine without you.

Gravatar @Gnarls

Yes, it was a shoulder injury, but I remember there being absolutely no official announcements about it until like November or December, after the season was over. We were all in the dark about what happened for pretty much the entire season.

Torn labrums suck. I got diagnosed with that the day before I was flying out to San Fran for a swim meet a little over a year ago. I had surgery after I got back, and...my shoulder has never been the same. It's ok, but a lot of grotesque clicking. I wonder how Gutierrez is able to throw with any velocity.

Gravatar Shoulder injury:

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/ne...tory? id=2285043

Though it is an espn article, so who knows?

Gravatar Rod didn't call AA or MM out. He made it clear he would love to have them- he just didn't think it would happen. Mallet, on the other hand, he called out and should have. Tell the punk to take a hike. We are better with Threet or Pryor.

Can't blame the kid for wanting to warm up and get some gambling in. i'll take him and make him feel at home.

Gravatar Just for a little perspective, last year this same board would've torched Schembechler Hall had Michigan's courtship of Mallett failed. Now everyone's ready to tar and feather the kid.

I agree may not have handled things well, but he's still a kid. Cut him some slack and wish him well if he transfers. But remember, he's a part of the team until he graduates or departs, so put the pitchforks down.

Changing the subject, my hat's off to Rodriguez for his candidness. It's readily apparent things will be different from here on out with the media. It's also a welcome change.

Gravatar EVERY UM QB since Harbaugh (except John Navarre) has been a success in the pros.

We disagree.

Signed,
Demetrius Brown
Michael Taylor
Scott Dreisbach
Drew Henson
John Navarre

I'd call Harbaugh, Grbac, Collins, Griese and Brady successful based on longevity and/or accomplishments. The rest are TBA or busts.

Gravatar Potato, potatoe. Either way, UM has 5 successful QBs in the last 20 years (Jury's out on Henne). tOSU has how many?

Gravatar Mallett supposedly had settled on sticking around for winter semester and spring practice. If U-M signed Pryor or if he wasn't satisfied with the offense, he'd transfer elsewhere this summer. If no competition emerged and he thought he could handle whatever system Rodriguez implements, he'd stay and play this fall.

That works for Mallett; it doesn't work for Rodriguez -- Mallett being around would scare off Pryor and even other candidates. Meanwhile there would be no guarantee that Mallett would be here in the fall, which means Rodriguez risks having no Mallett and no Pryor.

So Rodriguez forces the issue -- either Mallett commits fully to the program and makes it clear that he'll be here through the 2008 season or he leaves right now. That way Rodriguez knows the situation going into recruiting.

And don't know Threet as a possible backup being promoted to starter. He wasn't exactly chopped liver coming out of HS. He's not John Navarre stepping in for Henson, more like Henne stepping in for Guts.

Gravatar Would Mallett transfer if Carr is still the coach??

Gravatar @Meeechigan Dan

I totally agree about the negative on Pryor. I would love to see the spread run w/ a throwing QB who can scramble from time to time as well. I would pretty much like to see the Capital One Bowl all over again, against everybody next year. Maybe that will be the case of Threet runs the O. I hope to see it and I think we have plenty of WR's ready to make it run.

Gravatar Jeff, that's a plausible theory. A theory, but plausible nonetheless.

And I, for one, welcome our new Threet overlord.

Gravatar Two things that made the offense work in the Captial One Bowl were these:

1. Henne made very good decisions and threw very accurate balls
2. Arrington played out of his mind

Those things are not guaranteed for next year. Yes, the offense was amazing on Jan 1st, but that required great performances by developed, veteran players.

Gravatar Point being that it isn't easy to simply replicate that offense for next year.

Gravatar I like a pass-based spread more than the spread option too though. It just might not be as easy as we think. Maybe I'm wrong though.

Gravatar @M Fan in Cbus Hell

You're sort of missing the forest for the trees here. To wit: would Pryor be considering Michigan if Carr were still the coach? Would Mallett's job be at risk if Carr were still the coach? Would we really want a kid so obsessed with/insecure about his PT and NFL future for the next 2-3 years? Everything is connected, my friend. The good lord giveth and taketh away.

I'll miss Ryan Mallett, but I will not mourn him.

Goodnight, folks!

Gravatar I don't blame RR at all for wanting a definitive yes-or-no from RM now. The idea of RM going all the way through spring practice before he makes up his mind whether to stay or go is all upside to Mallett and alot of downside to RR. Especially given the new offensive system, it's crazy to expect RR and staff to put any spring ball time into teaching a kid who ain't gonna be around in the fall.

I also wish AA and MM were going to be around, but let's face it: it's all about the money, and if they think that they'll wither in the new offense (rightly or wrongly), then leaving now makes sense.

Ain't all that impressed by Hopson's resume, though. It could be looked at as a crony. You have to give RR the chance to build his program, but arrrghg nonetheless.

Gravatar just left the bucknuts forum. perusing their boards after another loss in the championship game made my day a little brighter. screw big ten solidarity! is that so wrong?

Gravatar What's the word on J. Baldwin? It'd be nice to pick up another WR (just think, 6 receiver spread!) and he looked good in the Army game.

Gravatar As far as the Big Ten solidarity thing goes, is there any way we actually take care of business during the season and don't get snubbed for the NC? I can't see that happening. We have too much national appeal, and our fans travel too well. We take care of our business, I think we're fine.

Gravatar Proctor's got the definitive answer on the QB lineage.

Dreisbach had the talent, but too many injuries.

Henson was...well,..Henson.

Navarre is out of the NFL and trying that new AFL or something league.

And I've never been able to shake the thought that we really missed the boat on Gutierrez. I wish him all the best with NE.

Gravatar Sorry: "do get snubbed"

Gravatar I saw Navarre at the Jug this fall. Someone pointed him out to me, and, right when a looked, a kid vomited on him. The kid was trying to get to the bathroom but only made it to Navarre.

Gravatar To get back to the Henne v. Gutz thing, I remember being at Henne's first game and turning to my roomate Jared who had just said "Spencer Brinton?" and going "That's fucking Chad Henne, he's a freshman... holy shit."

A friend of mine who was a trainer said that Braylon came back for his senior year because he thought Gutz could get them to the NC and that he was going to be 1000 times better than Navarre. I second big stick that I think Gutz would have torn up the Big Ten that year. The "what if?" on Gutz is the big lingering dilemma from that year.

Gravatar Fuck Yeah, ChicaGoBlue!

Those who stay will be champions is right. Bo said it in 1969 and Barry Alvarez said it at Wisconsin in 1990 - those guys that left? They were not missed.

Reminds me of Red Berensen, too. Once he was recruiting a kid and at the end of the official visit, Red asked him pont blank i he was going to take the schollie. The kid says,at that point, that he loved what Michigan had to say and that he had a great visit, but that he still wanted to take his visit to East Lansing the following weekend. Red told him that if he wasn't sure at that point, then he should just commit to state. He revoked the offer right then and there.

I wish Mallett no ill will if he decides to leave. Good luck, kid. No offense to him but, if he doesn't want to be here, then I'd rather have someone who shits maize and bleeds blue taking snaps.

Gravatar didnt gutz hurt his shoulder after getting blasted in a non-contact drill by one of our linebackers (pierre woods?)?

Gravatar Gutz did hurt his shoulder, but the extent of his injury was never really known. IMO, it couldn't have been that bad if NE was willing to sign him.

My beef about the whole Gutz thing is that it's my feeling that the UM coaches (I'm looking at you, LC and SL) never gave the kid a chance because of their commitments to Navarre and Henne. IMO, they left Navarre in to pad stats instead of developing Gutz, and Gutz's injury gave them a convenient excuse to keep a promise they (allegedly) made to Henne to get significant PT as a freshman.

Gravatar I'm pretty sure a 6-WR spread would get flagged for illegal formation.

Still, having a stable-full of talented receivers is a Michigan tradition, and one I hope RichRod can keep.

Gravatar Good to see R2 and Lloyd hanging out at the BBall game together.

Gravatar Any one see this post about Hopson being hired as a Defensive Assistant...not DC

Gravatar http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/w...=ncf& id=3187137

Sorry...forgot the link

Gravatar That article also says Tennessee might add Scott Loeffler & Mike DeBord.

Can't say I'm happy about Loeffler, but DeBord...

So begins the cycle of Big Ten over SEC domination.

Gravatar My guess is its the "might" that is holding up Mallet's declaration. He is just waiting for Loeffler to land a firm offer.

Gravatar Wow M basketball is pretty bad...first time watching them this year. Erin Andrews is so HOT!!!

Gravatar Damn, I am brilliant. I concluded on the previous thread:

Logic suggests he will not be the DC, but a position coach. Has to be. Logic also suggests RR would promote Gibson or Tall before hiring a wet-behind-the-ears DC from a 2nd rate conference that he knows in passing..
Meeechigan Dan | Homepage | 01.08.08 - 2:22 pm | #

-------------------------------------------------- ------------------------

Gravatar @Meeechigan

I read that and was sooo hoping you were right. Very glad you were. Hoping for big name DC to A2.

Gravatar Here's the press release on coaching staff. Still no DC.

http://www.mgoblue.com/football/....aspx? id=104404

Gravatar Seattle, boy that's some extra brainpower at work. BM is opening the checkbook. Bring in a Tenuta or someone of his caliber now, and look out!

Gravatar thanks to bill martin, i'm going to graduate in YPSI! this school is trash.

Gravatar Damn our basketball team is bad...

Gravatar Nice little article on espn.com about the death threats that RR's relatives back in WVA are getting. His house was vandalized, too. This only confirms my stereotype image of West Virginians.

Gravatar Eric Gordon is good. Our basketball team is not.

Gravatar On the NC thing. First, I LIVE down here! I HATE the SEC! That said, no way could I pull for the buckeyes. THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN IN MY LIFETIME!

I was very happy for Miles and the LSU Tigers.

You guys are all up tight about the Big 10 versus SEC dialog. I live down here and stand up for the Big 10 all the time. The reality is that the SEC is good, but not as good as they think. Also, the Big 10 is down, but the top 3 teams can still compete on the national stage (well, maybe not the buckeyes).

Let's face it guys. The Big 10 has some work to do. Michigan's victory over Florida was GREAT! My neighbor played for Florida, so it's been fun flying my M flag since Jan 1!

Look. The SEC is NOT the NFL (down here they think they are and they think they invented football). The Big 10 is down, but at least we're not even close to the ACC!

Things will balance out again over time. RR will bring innovation to Michigan and I expect big things by 2009.

Still, we've got to get back to the old days when Michigan had a top five schedule every year, and then we don't care about the SEC-Big 10 squabbles. We live or die by our success. The hell with the rest of them.

Gravatar Michigan fan- yeah that is a true story. My Dad was an assistant coach with Red in the early years of his coaching and Red also had another instance in recruiting that I thought was special:

There was a very highly touted recruit that Michigan assistant coaches were persuing and basically every school was telling him everything short of giving him head, promising this and that....Red finally got to talk to him and said to the kid "Son what are you going to do for Michigan?"

I just have always loved that story and I think Rich Rod is showing a bit of that. Only time will really tell, but he is setting a tone that if you are not with us 100% then get the hell out. It is his way or the highway and its all about the team. I love that in a coach.

Gravatar No Barwis listed on the press release? Does that mean that just mean he hasn't officially been hired, or is that something to be concerned about?

Gravatar the SEC is hillbilly

Gravatar Dudes, it will make you feel good that OSU is in total meltdown mode. I was in the Dome last night and by halftime the OSU players were almost beating each other on the sidelines. Those guys totally fell apart when LSU rolled off 24 straight points to take over the game. If any recruit is considering OSU and Mich, they will have a hard time signing with the redcoats. I wore LSU purple and had a great time. OSU sucks and they will not recover well for next year.

Gravatar I live in GA also, it is sickening how high on the SEC the people around here are. A guy on the radio said today "I think USC pressured the Rose Bowl committee to invite Illinois since they were scared of Georgia." He was dead serious

Gravatar Gnarles- that was on a previous press release. I dont know why they didnt put it on that one, but who knows....???

Gravatar MStudent - Thanks...I was worried for a second.

Gravatar R2A2 is going to become a Michigan God

Gravatar Gnarls

My guess is that S&C is not actually part of the football program but athletic department.

Gravatar The contrast between the gigantic national tongue-bathing that the SEC is getting and the bashing the B10 is receiving is amazing. Because LSU beats OSU, it's the final nail in the argument that the B10 has sunk to the level of C-USA.

Meanwhile, Florida, which led LSU for 59 minutes down in Baton Rouge and loses by 4, gets blasted in its own back yard by a turnover-prone Michigan and nobody seems to notice.

Gravatar After watching the sweater last night it became very clear how to beat OSU. LSU came out in a different offensive formation almost every snap. The "great" OSU defense was confused and kept looking to the sidelines for help. By that time the ball was snapped and they were out of position again.

RR will have a field day with Tressel. It isn't just going 4 and 5 wide, it is using a series of different formations and packages each series. The sweater's defense can't prepare for all of them.

Gravatar Ha...RR just said on ESPN to Erin Andrews that he "brought his entire strength staff from WVA." I'm no longer concerned...

Gravatar good job you sexy reporter erin andrews or however you spell her name...damn she is sexy sexy sexy

I like how RR said he will have the DC hired by the end of the week

Gravatar I thought for sure the LM mafia would be out in full force today

Gravatar oh, and we're gonna lose TP cuz our bball squad is awful

Gravatar gnarls- haha yeah I saw that too. You can now breathe easy. I actually think that is the most significant part of RR being hired. I'm looking forward to seeing our guys not only outskilling/talent other teams, but actually being in superior condition.

Talent + Conditiioning = loads of success

Gravatar RR will win big because he doesn't just throw rock. Last night Tressel threw rock over and over. OSU did't ever make the adjustment to cover the tight end.

The future is truly bright.

Gravatar The MtMM has been disbanded. We don't need it.

Gravatar did anyone else see some big time and old time michigan football in les' game plan. TE's involved and smashmouth D. He truly played a Bo game after saying he was going to give a "Bo type speech"

good win for LM

Gravatar OT-

this basketball team is comprised of THE WORST SHOOTERS i have ever seen for a Div. 1 team. Jesus, they can't MAKE LAYUPS. It's really frustrating

Gravatar rivals is saying that richrod has heard of 1 decision but I dont have an account and can't see who it is.....one of the 3 tho.....anyone with an account

Gravatar From the Cleveland Plain Dealer:

...But the battle for Pryor, billed as a thinking man's Vince Young, is between Ohio State and Michigan. The Wolverines' Rich Rodriguez told Pryor he was leaving West Virginia before he told his own players. A redshirt year is probably not in Pryor's plans.

Could be good for us!

Gravatar T-boy- love the optimism. I think we will be fine as well. RR is a great offensive mind and he is a true competitor. We will win games in no time, people need to stop worrying.

Michigan is great and will continue to be great going forward. I actually expect to see a focused, conditioned, talented, and competitive team from the start next year.

Everyone calling Utah and the likes a toss-up game, pa-lease. Just watch, we will be good next year. I bet we stay in the top 25 all year long...

Gravatar Joe Buck Must Die- really? well someone who has a rivals account needs to inform us all! PLEASE!

Gravatar http://michigan.rivals.com/conte....asp? CID=759477

thats the link for whomever has an account

Gravatar Listen to this shit kids.

http://michigan.rivals.com/conte....asp? CID=759477

AA, MM & RM gone. About 55 seconds in.

Gravatar AA texted RR and said he was going pro. MM missed the team meeting and that is, in RR's mind, an indication he's going pro.

Said Mallett is "not playing for Michigan." Very sharp. Only cares about who wants to play for Michigan.

Gravatar Ohio State offensive line commit J.B. Shugarts on TP:

http://rivals100.rivals.com/cont....asp? cid=756450

Or see below:

"Pryor has yet to make his decision, but it has been widely speculated for quite some time that Ohio State could be the team to beat. Shurgarts said on Sunday that he'll continue to do his best to recruit Pryor to the Buckeyes.

"Me and Terrelle are good friends," Shugarts said. "My dad and his guardian Teddy are really close. I talk to Terrelle just about every day. I'll be hanging out with him a lot, but I'll be talking some trash to those East guys as well since I'm with the West.

"He's mentioned Michigan to me before, but he's never been there before. I don't want to say anything bad about them though, because it is a really good school with great tradition. I don't want to start the Ohio State vs. Michigan talk until I get there."

Gravatar "Wanna wait & see what Mallett has to say?"

"Don't care. He's not playing for Michigan."

Wow.

Gravatar Ryan Mallett must have really pissed people off.

Gravatar "Wanna wait & see what Mallett has to say?"

"Don't care. He's not playing for Michigan." Under breath, "Cocky little shit."

(That last part's just me reading between the lines.)

"Need to address QB & WR recruiting immediately."

Gravatar All I can say is WOW. This is a coach who is in charge, who knows his shit and who understands something VERY important out of the gate: the TEAM. Refer to Bo's team speech. Mallett went under the bus because he clearly did not internalize this.

Gravatar hi friends I am back heap your abuse on me for having an undisciplined team and an OC worse than debored. AT least I still have you

xoxoxox

Gravatar Oh mallet to UCLA me thinks

Gravatar Debord and Loffler to TEN?

Whats with that!

Gravatar mgobleu- wow thanks man. Well that sucks about MM and AA but i'm glad the way RR dealt with the RM questions. He was like he doesnt want to be here then fuck him.

I also liked how he said that they are looking for more WR's and Qb's so that is a plus

Gravatar I am very impressed with how he is handling RM. Very Bo-esque.

Gravatar I've listened to this 3 times already, and the biggest thing I've gleaned from it is that I'm pretty sure I love this guy.

Gravatar If I may make a prediction....

Since on JR R2 said that he can't really talk about recruiting, but that he's happy with one of the recruits. I bet TP has been with him all the way, and that the phone call he made to him before announcing his decision was a we're-in-this-together type of thing. The last request must have been RM has to go, and dare I say TP commits to Michigan within the next 10 days.

Gravatar I absolutely love RR right now. He is the man I want in charge of our team. If you aren't with us you are against us and we will not deal with that.

That was perfect how he dealt with the Mallett Q's

Gravatar I dont want to jinx this, but if I had to bet on it....TP to Michigan is a lock. I'd bet a ton on it....hopefully I dont go bankrupt

Gravatar I'm not gonna buy into the TP conspiracy theories, but RR did say we need to sign "a couple" QB's.

Still, ten bucks says Pryor doesn't commit til signing day.

Gravatar It might not be till signing day that TP commits, but I'm sure RR is going hard after a few fast QB's...also he talked about WR's....I wonder who is out there that he might want?

Gravatar TP will be in A2 next year

Gravatar Dont we still need more Dbs? RR doesnt talk defense much.

Gravatar anyone need tickets for next year?

Gravatar the comparison between RR's deportment today and Dantonio's "apology" for not being able to keep his team together when their stud declared for the draft - it's very very significant.

clear we hired the right guy.

Go Blue!

Gravatar I'll take tickets...

Gravatar Joe, What do you have?

Gravatar student tickets

Gravatar if RR is going to be so open what will we talk about on the Mblogs?

After 40 years of secrecy this he is very refreshing

Gravatar Has RR said more since the Rome interview?

Gravatar I need a set of student tickets for a friend.

Gravatar Thanks for that audio clip. I like that RR is a straight shooter...

Gravatar when can we buy the student tickets???

Gravatar i want to raffle off a pair for the first game to celebrate. donate to the website

Gravatar Joe Buck,

Are you really not going to use a set of student tickets? I will buy them from you.

Gravatar Chris,

Check out the rivals link above. He gave a mini interview at the bball game

Gravatar i'm sure i can find you two

Gravatar but i dont know what i can do about an mcard

Gravatar unless they validate them every game

Gravatar It is a student who just finished a master's degree in August. He has an mcard. Is this a set or individual games?

Gravatar depends on the starting QB, I'm just throwing it out there to gauge interest

Gravatar Oh okay. There is interest here. I'll keep my eye open for more posts on this in the future. Thanks.

Gravatar Yo guys, when do student tickets go on sale again?

Gravatar http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs...PDATE/ 801080472

ANN ARBOR -- Newly hired Michigan football coach Rich Rodriguez confirmed Tuesday night that receivers Mario Manningham and Adrian Arrington and quarterback Ryan Mallett are no longer with the team.

Rodriguez confirmed the news in an impromptu briefing with the media at halftime of the men's basketball game against Indiana. Rodriguez also said his staff is nearly complete, but he needs to add a defensive coordinator and give some assistants specific roles with the team by this weekend.

*************

Gravatar the man rules with an iron fist

Gravatar well well well....damn it to MM and AA but I am glad RM is out of here. The guy was a disease. All he did was infect others on the team with his cocky attitude and brought the team down. I would not want to play with a guy like that. News to ya RM: you are not that good....yes I know you were just a Frosh, but your shit does stink FYI

Gravatar I love the BO mentality he has.

1. It is either you are for the team or you are gone.

2. I run the show so you better get used to it

3. We will be very well conditioned....aka you better work your ass off

4. I am bringing Michigan back to the level it was on....we will be ELITE again.

Gravatar wow

Gravatar I'm sad about Arrington.

Gravatar i don't think we're going to be very good next year.

like RR's attitude but I think the bowl streak could be in jeopardy.

Gravatar Eh, maybe it'll just be Motor City.

The Tennessee talk, including DeBord and Loeffler with Mallett, is at

http://www.rockytoptalk.com/stor...1/8/15311/ 12489

Sounds crazy to me.

Gravatar I don't think the bowl streak is in jeopardy. 7-5 is worst case scenario.

Gravatar With that schedule, the bowl streak is by no means in jeopardy.

Gravatar do any of you think that guys like clemons, hemingway, and savoy will be able to step in effectively next year or are we going to have to lean on stonum to play a major role in the offense from the get go?

also, anybody know if kevin grady's going to be at his pre-injury from come august?

Gravatar fuck Mallett (he's a gaping huge pussy)

Screw Debored - wasted too many greenbacks waiting for his ass to turn it up a notch. Nothing like getting canned to join the rest of college football with an effective spread offense.

Blow me Loeffler- he looks like a fucking schoolboy.

It's RichRod's show. Time to turn it up a notch. If I waste 100 bucks on another piece of shit showing at an OSU MICH game... I may shoot up a McDonalds (even though I'll drop a couple hundred at a casino and not blink an eye). I expect a good goddamn show.

Let's Go

Sorry, I've been drinking.

Gravatar pre-injury form, meaning lots of fumbling?

Gravatar One thing I'm impressed about with that interview is the way RR has effectively cut of their "will they, won't they?" storylines. "Here's they answer, they won't be coming back, let's talk about something else."

Gravatar Brian, post an update already! It's been five hours and there is breaking news. Slacker ;-)

Gravatar Boy, based on that audio clip, RM is sure done at U-M. He must have really played his talks with RR as if he were the second coming of Christ or something. I know the guy is cocky, but man RR does NOT like him. That much is obvious. If RM was on the fence, he was just kicked off of it with RR's new army boots.

Gravatar I am giddy right now!

Sure, it sucks to lose those guys, but this is like back to the future....ala 1969 in 2008....does RR drive a silver delorean???

Sure, we may endure some pain early, but the gain is going to be more than worth it.

Gravatar No Mas

Gravatar All Hail the New 21st Century Bo to the program!

Good luck AA and MM - you will be missed . . . and replaced, just as those before you were.

RM - today was the best schooling you'll ever receive.

Nine men with block M's are about to go hunting and I'm pretty certain it will be a good last-minute haul TP or no TP.

Gravatar those who stay will be champions hasnt rung this true in 40 years

get in or get out

Gravatar
Since on JR R2 said that he can't really talk about recruiting, but that he's happy with one of the recruits. I bet TP has been with him all the way, and that the phone call he made to him before announcing his decision was a we're-in-this-together type of thing. The last request must have been RM has to go, and dare I say TP commits to Michigan within the next 10 days.

I'd be a little uncomfortable if RR was making his team personnel decisions based upon the request of a recruit. I'm guessing RR is smarter than that.

Gravatar No, I think it was the "court me! tell me how much you want me!" thing that must have bugged him. Carr said right after the bowl game that Mallett had made his decision, but his family has been stringing it out. RR has more or less just stopped the bullshit, which has been to Mallett's advantage at Michigan's expense.

Gutsy.

Gravatar I think my favorite part about the clip is how RR uses "we" when referring to the program. It was strange to hear at first, but it's a fantastic indication that he's 100% committed to making this team dominant.

Gravatar RR's controlled intensity is incredible.

He is going to have this team READY to PLAY this Fall. The bowl streak will continue.

Longer term, I think this is going to be a very good 10, possibly 15 year hire.

Gravatar who will be the DC, that's what I want to know

Gravatar I also really like RR immediately speaking about NCAA recruiting regulations when the media attempted to bait him into giving away infomation regarding potential QB and WR recruits.

Nice attention to detail!

Gravatar Caught a similar article on mlive.com and it stated that Manningham and Mallett didn't show up to the first team meeting yesterday, and it sounds like neither gave the coaching staff a heads-up or explanation. I know it may sound naive given the mindset of the stereotypical student-athelete, but I think that this sort of behavior demonstrates a tremendous lack of respect/responsibility on the parts of both Manningham and Mallett. At least Arrington sent the coach a text message (which still isn't very good).

Gravatar RR seems to be handling Mallett like Bo might have. RR is the new coach, he has discussed with Mallett possibilities (of some sort) how he can be a continuing part of the team. He has publicly indicated he would work Mallett into the system.

Mallett has not attended a required meeting nor communicated with RR about his intentions. RR is the coach, he is in charge, and he's not putting up with any BS from his players. That's how it should be.

Gravatar It's refreshing to speculate that a kid will transfer before discussing it with him?

Gravatar It's refreshing to have a coach who isn't putting up with any bullshit. This kid was--intentionally or not--holding the recruiting process hostage. RR basically called the bluff.

Gravatar He says he's discussed it three times. He also says he's done discussing it, as Mallett didn't show up for a team meeting. Sounds fair to me, but my children and colleagues will be happy to tell you I'm a hardass.

Gravatar I GUESS EVERYONE FORGOT ABOUT MY NASTY ASS EWWWW I HAVE ALREADY CAME ON RR'S POSTER AT LEAST 100 TIMES EWWWW AND OSU BLOWS ME HARDER THAN RICHARD SIMMONS

Gravatar I'm glad RR is not taking any guff is and eliminating distractions. Guy has a plan and he is working it.

Gravatar peanut butter jelly time was just on family guy

Gravatar RR might become Bob Knight in about five years, probably just as successful and just as hard for the institution to control. Michigan hasn't seen anything like this!

Gravatar Well, aside from Bo, that is.

Gravatar Any good coach I've ever had would not keep dealing with this.

Gravatar AA and MM are in a different position than Mallet. I'm quite sure if they changed their minds, RR would welcome them back with open arms no matter how many meetings they missed. RM is considering transferring...that is not the same as deliberating your draft status, so while it would be nice for MM to say "hey coach, won't be attending the meeting, I'm leaning pro and will decide in a few days," let's not claim AA and MM acted disrespectful. They don't have a relationship with RR, classes just resumed, and they owe nothing if they are going pro. They've earned their right to leave.

RM can also do whatever he wants. He is not a Michigan man, and I wish him the best elsewhere and hope he has a successful career. We'll be fine without him.

Gravatar I've always wanted Michigan to hire Bob Knight. I've always known they wouldn't, but a comparison between RR and BK sounds good to me.

Gravatar Looks like RM fumbled again.

Gravatar From ESPN:

When told what Rodriguez said, Jim Mallett insisted his son has not made a decision.

"Coach knows more than I do, I guess," Jim Mallett told the AP.

Gravatar Interesting to see Carr on the big screen at the bball game while RR was holding court two rows behind him. A guy behind me made the "crack" that BM should ask RR to start attending Hockey games - Carr's always at courtside for bball when in town!!

BTW, the bball team is VERY young and it shows. Amaker left the shelf empty!!

Gravatar Don't know if this has been posted but let's take a break from playing chicken little and laugh at the Buckeyes:

OSU’s Meltdown:: “Guys were fighting with other guys”

http://www.daytondailynews.com/ o...ere_fighti.html

Gravatar Daddy is full of bull. From the Daily, January 3rd:

"Carr told reporters yesterday morning that Mallett had already made his decision, but would not elaborate."

Gravatar I have a boner listening to richrod talk on rivals. To all the rednecks in wvu that are hating "suck it" you can have Bill Stewart.

Mario - rethink
Adrian - rethink

Mallett - who cares

Gravatar Bill Stewart is probably the most impulsive and worst hire of all time. Not only is he a racist, but he is horrible at leading a football team. He looks like a klan member and I will enjoy watching him destroy the beauty that RR created so RR can have the last laugh. How redneck can you be to vandalize someone's house. especially someone who turned their shit head football program into a national powerhouse.

Gravatar This is awesome:

Gravatar \name the last tOSU QB to be successful in the pros?//

Tom Tupa!

RE: Mallett, good luck to him. He had to fill in for Henne as a true freshman for some pretty big games (Notre Dame and Penn State) and "managed both games well" (which is to say he sucked least among all quarterbacks sharing the field on those days, but again he was a true freshman and would have expected a redshirt under normal conditions).

He's got as many wins over ND (and OSU, for that matter) as Henne and his leaving doesn't completely screw the program over the way Drew Henson did...so Ryan, thanks for the work you put in, thanks for not making a bad situation worse, good luck wherever you end up. Maybe you'll pull a Matt Gutz and be Tom Brady's third-stringer on the Pats team that wins their 6th Super Bowl in a few years, who knows?

Gravatar i want to hear this on rivals...it's pissing me off not hearing it.

Gravatar you can check it out. It's not just for members

Gravatar Joe Gibbs retires more than my grandpa goes to the toilet every night.

Gravatar what's the link? i can't find it.

Gravatar Terrell Pryor is in a Facebook group called "Wolverines for Terrell Pryor," also he friended Sam McGuffie. Admittedly this kind of "information" sounds like it comes from an SNL skit but...

Gravatar Anon:

Listen to it yourself. It's available to everyone.

http://www.michigan.rivals.com/c....asp? CID=759477

Gravatar Wow. I guess people aren't gonna miss Mallett around here. Might be a decent idea to hold off the guillotine until we know for sure whats going on.

Maybe I'm wrong, too, but just thought I'd throw that out there.

Gravatar screw that pos

Gravatar RM was a cancer that would have eaten at the core of this team with his apparent attitude (see numberous crying and yelling sessions on sidelines this year). The difference between he and Pryor is that both are cocky, but Pryor has reason to be, he could line up and play any skilled position on the field and excel. I cant see Mallett being a standout tailback or safety. That being said, I wouldnt want any player on the team that cries for mommy every chance he gets. RM needs to attend the college closest to his home so mom can still dress him in the morning. The attitude has left the building....thank goodness.

Gravatar Thing that surprised me about Mallett was how his popularity seemed to drop as the year went on. Recall early in the season, when he was in the huddle looking like he was having a great time, and his enthusiasm seemed to spread to his teammates. It sure went downhill from there.

Gravatar Mallett must be gone. Lloyd says that he knows what Mallett is going to do. Surely Lloyd would not withhold this information from RR, right? So if RR is coming out and saying that RM is transferring . . .

Gravatar That was an amazing clip. The thing that really struck me well was at the end when they were naming QB's...Threet...he also included Sheridan. Sheridan is the backup of all backups and to include him really shows that he knows the team and doesn't leave anyone out.

Gravatar WC, thanks for the link. Good job by RR hitting things head on!!!

Gravatar As for Mallett, good luck and unfortunately, good riddance. His demise came at his own hand when he came off the field in the Wisconsin(?) game and Carr wanted to bark at him. Instead, RM decided to bark back and walk away from Carr. Coach got the last word, but it was clear to me and my buddies that RM wasn't the "fit" we all thought he was here at Michigan.

Gravatar Joined the convo during the coaching search, have been reading a lot since then, but not posting.

Mallett's problem has been less that he didn't play nice with the other kids than that he's uncoachable. Those exchanges with Lloyd on the sidelines caught on camera were only the tip of the iceberg. Of course, if you don't listen to the beloved HC, the others will not cut you any slack, hence the other exchanges with MM. Apparently, his dad is even a bigger problem. Maybe RM's gone even if Lloyd stays.

Without a firm new commit (i.e. TP) at QB, or an obvious successor, in the light of losing the laser that is RM's arm, I could be worried. But two things: if RM still thinks he knows more than the HC, I wish him luck wherever he ends up. And if Rod thinks we'll be ok without him, then we'll be ok without him.

Gravatar Dominick Britt seems to be a RR target for a dual threat qb. He's from Ohio.

Gravatar Everyone is going nuts how WVU fans are turning on RRod now that he left. How are you any different now that Mallet seems to be doing the same?

Gravatar Just a quick side-bar re: Coach Rod. Although I'm very positive on him. Several coaches and ex-players from the 80's are concerned that this is just a stepping stone for him to the Pros within the next five years. Hopefully, not!

Also, any of you who run across Coach Rod's lovely wife, please be sure to educate her on the fact that we are Maize-n-Blue and not Blue-n-Yeller (no joke)!!

Gravatar @Anon,
Differences? We'll no threats to the Mallett family

Gravatar \The spread (in all its various forms) is not a fad, it will become a staple of college football offenses,...//
>>
\i'd like to ask why..this is a strong assertion, and i have my own answer, but i'm curious why everyone else thinks so....//

Two theories, here: One is from the Reagan playbook of trickle-down economics, football-style. It all starts with the NFL and the success a certain undefeated team is having running (more often passing) from that formation; the NFL is very much a copycat league...more teams will be emulating the New England Patriots, playing out of the spread formation. The more successful the Patriots are, the more likely their coordinators are to be given coaching opportunities with other teams, presumably bringing elements of the Patriots; offensive gameplan along with them.

The more this offense is used in the NFL, the more likely traditionally larger NFL-nursery collegiate teams are to use the offense. Like it or not, Michigan's offense during the Carr error -uh, ERA- was basic NFL offense 101...with a significantly lower degree of creativity involved.

The second theory is that the spread read/option offense is the 21st Century's version of the old Wishbone formation from the late '60's that was able to dominate the NCAA landscape until Jimmy Johnson and the Goddamned Miami Hurricanes were able to shut down Oklahoma and Nebraska in the mid-'80's. It's an easy offense to teach and the basic triple option nature of the attack gives teams with less 5-star athletes (like WVU) a fighting chance against pretty much anyone out there (seriously, after watching the Fiesta Bowl is there any BCS team out there you think West Virginia couldn't beat this year?). It's why option-based offenses are still preferred at military academies even today.

Gravatar Anonymous, I havent like Mallett since he threw one out of 3 passes to wide open targets into the ground, and he is a whiny little girl...dont like those either

Gravatar Yeah, besides TP, Dominick Britt is about the only prospect I can find with UM or WVU (RichRod) even on the radar. Although I don't know if Michigan is a big enough draw to steal him from the likes of Akron, EMU or Hampton.

Gravatar \Bill Stewart is probably the most impulsive and worst hire of all time. Not only is he a racist, but he is horrible at leading a football team.//
>
To quote Coach Gundy:
"THAT'S NOT TRUE!!!"

Impulsive? Maybe, but generally justifiable. If your labelling of Stewart as a racist is based on him using the "N" word with a black athlete while at VMI, you need to get the facts before passing judgement. Because I know the truth and the truth is you're 180% off on that one.

As for leading a football team, the Oklahoma Sooners probably would've preferred taking their chances with RichRod running the show in the Fiesta Bowl based on his last game as head coach for WVU; Stewart's first game leading the 'Eers was an upset BCS win.

Gravatar If you were Threet right now, how would you feel?

I am guessing he will be sleeping with the new playbook for the next 8 months, Working on getting faster, and studying tons of film.

If OSU can get to the MNC game with Boeckman, I think Michigan will be OK.

Gravatar Anyway, enough talking about RM and his lack of anything worth remembering. RR is awesome, stern leadership. Could cost us a few gang bangers in recruiting in the future, but who cares. And all of this talk of a 7-5 or so season. Nah, 9-3 at worst. Threet/Pryor or whomever, we will still field on offense a spread with more speed than anyone in the bigten has ever had to deal with. There wont be a greater than 4.4 40 skilled pos starter on offense less the QB, and if Pryor comes that will hold true for the QB as well. The defense will gel and I love the 3-3 stack with the rover. That is what tOSU did to us in November with Gholston being the floater all over the field every play albeit that was only flipping the front seven. Rover back creates enormous QB read and blocking assignment issues without necessarily having to send the house every play. Confusion is a greater enemy than athleticism to sound offensive execution.

Gravatar Yeah I'm a little disappointed at all the vitriol being directed at Mallett. He played alright to start the season when put into a tough spot, and for whatever reason, appeared to get progressively worse and develop an attitude that certainly didn't jibe with Coach Carr. But then again, he's 18 years old (maybe 19 by now). When I was his age, I was a total idiot (full disclosure: I still am).

I think it's unfair to throw him under the bus as people have been doing. He hasn't handled this situation particularly well (he should just make and announce his decision) - and I don't fault RR for basically giving him the boot - but he's gone, at least from the team, and I hope he does well wherever he ends up. I see no reason to shit on him on the way out the door. He hasn't said or done anything that reflects negatively on our team or our school.

Gravatar Gnarls has it right. What's the deal with ragging on Mallett? What has he actually done that we know for sure that's worth excoriation.

Gravatar Mallett=bird in the hand

RR better hit that QB bush with a f*ckin' big net.

Gravatar Don't care!

I am only concerned with who is playing for Michigan

Gravatar What has Mallett done?

Not played within the system that recruited him. Not given respect to the coaches and teammates who are trying to elevate his and their game. Not accept responsibility for his play (eventhough he was a Freshman). Not embrace the rivalaries for Michigan. Not develop into a better quarterback throughout the season.

Mallett is no Chad Henne, but the integrity and poise and development that Henne showed during his Freshman year is an unfortunate and timely comparison to the selfish and oafish play of Mallett this past year.

I wish Mallett no malice, but he is certainly not a victim of circumstance. Quite the contrary, this was a year in which he could have taken steps (baby or giant) to designate himself as the rightful successor. Instead, he isolated players, coaches and fans.

Gravatar One thing I'm worried about with RR's new scheme at the helm is is the era of a strong line of pro-style QB's coming out of Michigan at an end? Will we no longer be a QB U? Name 2 spread QB's in the pros. Now look at the super bowl winning QB's for the past 15 years. Pro style, drop back, some scrambling ability.

And I agree with the previous comment that RR is going Bo style of "if you don't want to play for Michigan, then get the hell out," though I think RR's intentions are more suiting to his system than to "the team, the team, the team" and "those who stay will be champions."

I hope RR can adapt, because once teams figure out how to stop the spread, we'll be as sunk as Nebraska when teams figured out how to stop the option. I'd prefer a varied offensive attack than the same formation every time.

Gravatar It will be interesting to see how well RR recruits Michigan over the next few years. We've lost some biggies lately -- Rojo, Barksdale etc.

Gravatar RR isn't an idiot, plus who has stopped WVU? They hung 48 on Oklahoma and I'm sure they watched every damn game tape

Gravatar I have no idea how we recruit Michigan, I am sure its solid but man are we much stronger down in the south....especially florida.

Frankly, I've never liked the pro-style offense Michigan adopted as of about 20 years ago, despite it's success. It just never felt like "Michigan" - just a bland offense like nearly everyone else.

As far as I'm concerned, the epitome of college football offense is the option. It may seem quaint or old-fashioned to you young-uns, but there is something absolutely electrifying about a well-tuned option attack that you just don't get from a pro-set.

Nebraska abandoned the option not because it was ineffective, but simply because they felt it was old-fashioned and they needed to "modernize" their offense the West Coast offense was the latest hot ride. Now their fans are screaming to bring it back.

I, for one, will welcome our new spread-offense overlords.

Gravatar there is no need to talk about the past...Mallett is gone, good luck,

Didnt RR sound very confident he will have a couple qb's in this class? If not prior I have heard Star Jackson a Alabama commit who really liked WVU.

Gravatar These are 3 things for all to know.

1. If it's Threet, Pryor or Mallett at QB next year it won't matter if RR can't plug the holes we will have on the O-line.
2. West Virginia fans need to stop their crying and get the hell over it!! Grow the hell up!! The man decided to go a new direction in his life and he did great for your program, now put all your teeth back in your mouths and leave him and his family alone.
3. Fuck that dumb shit Forde!! Man is this guy a pile of worthless shit!! And ESPN his even dumber for paying this fuck!!

Gravatar I think we have some decent young talent on the oline between Dorenstein, Shilling, Boren and Molk...I am not concenred but its young and a new system.

Gravatar We always have a good O-Line, highly touted big men up front. Hopefully we continue on with good big men

Gravatar RR kicks ass.

Gravatar I feel a little strange being so repulsed by an article ripping on the Buckeyes (Forde's). "The Buckeyes have achieved just enough the past two seasons to rise to a level where they're incompetent." Umm...what? I can't wait until I see his column ripping Texas then, since the Horns lost to those incompetent Bucks last year in Austin. I guess it's just okay to forget about certain things when your only goal as a journalist is to piss people off enough to get some attention. Well played Pat.

Gravatar TennBlue -

Then you're in business with the new offense. For those of us who hate it, who know that it is the offense formulated to hide weaknesses, leaving it fundamentally unsound, it's no great time. What we saw against Florida is all we have to see...a Heisman QB who couldn't read a defense or make half the throws lost.

Apparently Michigan has a lot of fans who confuse running like a jail break on every snap as excitement. No worry, a few losses when we can't throw a pass to save our lives or put together a long drive to win the clock war, will make it clear that a few losses running a pro-style offense are no more painful than the other.

Gravatar "It will be interesting to see how well RR recruits Michigan over the next few years. We've lost some biggies lately -- Rojo, Barksdale etc."

Marvin -

No need to go back that far, we just lost Mallett, Arrington and Manningham. 2/3 more than we would have under other circumstances.

Gravatar I'd prefer to win the point war than the clock war.

Gravatar "There wont be a greater than 4.4 40 skilled pos starter on offense less the QB, and if Pryor comes that will hold true for the QB as well."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure Greg Matthews ran something like a 4.9 40-yard dash. I am faster than he is. Still, he is a good possession target.

JR Hemingway is listed at 4.58. He's no burner, and scout lists "speed" as an area for improvement.

I think Stonum is the only legit 4.4 guy. I hope he see's a significant amount of PT.

All this said, slower wideouts will not matter nearly as much with Pryor calling the signals and Carlos Brown and McGuffie (or possibly Avery Horn) in the backfield.

Gravatar Could it be that Rodriguez is actually trying to push Mallett out? His comments on Mallett and his status have been startlingly blunt, even as Mallett's parents insist that no decision has been made.

Gravatar Malletts not announced his transfer yet because he hasn't found school yet, and hes holding out hoping a good program wants to pick him up. Hence no word till he has figured out where hes going to go.

Gravatar People can't forget about Kevin Grady. Apparently will be 100% for spring practice and two years of eligibility left.

Could be a hell of a backfield . . .

Gravatar "Malletts not announced his transfer yet because he hasn't found school yet, and hes holding out hoping a good program wants to pick him up. Hence no word till he has figured out where hes going to go."

- Not attending the team meeting told a lot, I think.

Gravatar I quoted the wrong post. :( Sorry.

Gravatar Truth, go back to predicting Sarkisian is coming. RR has a resume that includes cultivating passers. He has said as much. He developed the "jailbreak" philosophy because he couldn't get a passing QB to WV. Get your facts straight.

Gravatar king, RR & Barwis & Frey have only had wet dreams of possessing the kind of OL talent we have. WVU's misfit collection of two star OLineman managed OU just fine.

Look for our OL to be very solid next year.

Gravatar Gnarls, there are soldiers 19 years old defending this country. My father flew 22 missions in the South Pacific at 19. We did not ask him to throw the one ring into Mt. Doom...we asked him to not be an ass, to appreciate the scholarship, to show up at team meetings, etc. That is not too much for a 19 year old to handle. He's a prima donna. Fuck him. He had the starting job as a soph at QB U under the tutelage of an offensive genius & that wasn't good enough for him??? Screw him. Get your blubbery, can't-hit-the-side-of-a-barn hillbilly ass out of town, Ryan.

Gravatar Then you're in business with the new offense.

You leave me confused. All offenses are designed to hide weaknesses. So are all defenses. That's fundamental part of building a team. You don't put slow-footed guys at safety or running back - you hide their weakness by putting them in a position where their weakness doesn't hurt as much, and utilize other strengths.

Lack of passing in the spread is due to having a qb who can't pass. Lack of running in the spread is due to having a qb who can't run. If you've got a qb who can do both, it's Katie-bar-the-door.

Tim Tebow is not a zone-read quarterback. His running is off of designed running plays, not reads of the defense. He either runs, or passes, but rarely makes the decision mid-play. Thus, Florida is not a good example.

Gravatar This says it all: "I recruited him once, twice, three times. 3 calls was enough."

Mallett doesn't like the hire because he and RR didn't click on the recruiting trail. Fine, get out of town.

But be a fucking man, you spoiled brat. Tell the coach you're transferring as opposed to just skipping a meeting.

This kid is a problem. He thought he was bad ass because he beat fucking Notre Dame prep. Lloyd had to k nock him down a few pegs. Now, he thinks he has the upper hand.

Leave prick. Go to UCLA and cheat with Neuheisel. Assbag.

Gravatar JD - totally agree. Any sympathy I had for Mallett went out the window. In this day and age, he could have at the very least sent Rod a text and be done with it. Couldn't even take the 10 seconds out of his life to do that. Classy.

Gravatar RR: "We will have a full class of 25 this year".

He's made this statement more than once, including again last night. No possible way we have 25 available scholarships unless more defections are coming, and/or he takes away Antonio Bass' and other medical guys' rides. Brian, how about an analysis here. . .

Gravatar MM and AA may wish they had the extra year in AA. While they were good also saw too much inconsistent play at times. Mallett being gone is probably a good deal. He was visibly upset with Carr during one of the games. Not good for someone who wants to be the teams QB. Also looking at the NFL success of Michigan QBs shows me he isn't very bright.

Gravatar One thing I want to clarify, because I saw it mentioned a couple times above. In the original Rome interview, they quote RR as saying:

"Unfortunately, I can't talk specifically about recruiting. But we are excited about one of the commitments we have. We have 15 or 16 commitments, and I'm also excited about the recruits we think we can get here."

Listening to it live, for half a second I thought I heard the same thing. However, I realized as he continued speaking that he said, "we are excited about, one, the commitments we have..." Which is to say, I don't think he was singling any one commitment out, whether that be Stonum or McGuffie or some super duper secret Pryor commit.

Gravatar I thought Ryan Mallet was going to win 3-4 Heismans at Michigan?

Gravatar I thought Ryan Mallet was going to win 3-4 Heismans at Michigan?
Nathan | 01.09.08 - 8:46 am | #

He may still do that, but not at Michigan. I wish him well, but if he doesn't want to be a part of the team, he's better off elsewhere - and so are we.

Gravatar Scott Dreisbach is still playing football.

In the Arena League.

And he plays some LB for them. Don't remember what team...somewhere in Ohio maybe?

Gravatar Two words:
Dan Kendra

Gravatar I'm just shocked that after being proven wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong a million times wrong about the private behavior of the AD during the coaching search, so many posters are willing to jump on the Mallett-is-an-asshole train by making wild assumptions about how he is handling the transfer.

We don't know shit about shit. Just because Rod goes on the radio and says something doesn't mean it's the full story. Coaches can be dicks too. Usually good ones are.

Don't misread my attitude. I don't care if Mallett stays or goes. Whatever. He has to do what's best for his future, and if he doesn't like Rich or doesn't like Michigan then why the hell would he stay here? He doesn't owe you fans anything, since some of you seem ready to burn his house to the ground because you *think* he might not have been buddy buddy with the team and didn't light the world on fire as a freshman. Fantastic.

And to think, people have been hammering WVU fans for weeks about how "omg classless!!" they are, and as soon as a teenage QB decides maybe he isn't in the right situation anymore when the coaches who recruited him leave and the offensive philosophy goes 180, it's "F THAT HILLBILLY" and "GO HOME TO MOMMY YOU PUSS" and "HE'S A CANCER ANYWAY". Right. Classssy.

It's one fuckin' QB. We're going 9-4 no matter what next year either way unless something terrible happens or we get a few lucky bounces. The real fruits of RichRod will come in a couple seasons when he has everything firmly in place, and by that time Mallett would have been a non-issue anyway.

Gravatar Dex,
You're a hillbilly pussy that can only talk about boobs.

Gravatar The Falcons are pursuing Pete Carroll for an interview.

Gravatar Thank you.

Gravatar Dex - completely agree. I just can't understand the "F Mallett!!" comments on here. The guy could have been one of the greats at Michigan - I'm not saying it was guaranteed, but you cannot judge a QB on his freshman year when he had limited playing time and was pushed into shitty situations by DeBord's awful playcalling (i.e., run, run, PASS!). Any comments about his attitude are pure speculation and you shouldn't judge the kid because of one sideline confrontation with Lloyd and prima donna Manningham yelling at him at Wisconsin. I wish him well.

Gravatar I'm kinda surprised that Arrington left. I don't see the guy even getting drafted in the first round.

Next year's offense could be downright brutal. It will probably be horrible unless somebody who hasn't shown us anything yet improves miraculously between now and September.

Gravatar How many passes has AA or MM dropped that they should have caught?
RM has to do what is best for him...period!

Gravatar AA has great hands. MM does have Braylon-style drops. Matthews will step up as the number one, which means less of a downfield threat unless someone else steps up - possibly Clemons or Hemingway.

Gravatar Best of luck to Mallett - no one should blame him if he feels that Rich Rod just wasn't the right fit for him. He's a 19 year old kid, and he played hard even when he wasn't effective. Maybe he and Lefty will be reunited somewhere.

Gravatar Although the comment that were made appear that the end is nigh, I wouldn't voice any tearful goodbyes just yet.

Gravatar what dex said

Gravatar Scalz - Rod's comments seemed pretty final - he said Mallett's "not playing for Michigan." I think it would be tough to reverse course after saying that, no?

Gravatar I agree with Dex. Yes, RM was not a "mature freshman" it appeared - neither was I. I thought RM played decently this year (as a true frosh) and showed a lot of potential. I would like to have him stay but not if he doesn't want to be there. But let's not take shots at him. This was a possibility with a coaching change. Let's hope Pryor or a few other high quality QB recruits look our way and we will be OK. I just hope that we do not end up with strictly run QBs at Michigan (ala Pat White). I would prefer QBs in the Tebow/Dixon mold.

Gravatar The statements that suggest that we'd be better off without MM and AA are hilarious. I think we'll be fine, but critiquing the season that MM just had by complaining about a few drops is like saying "Tom Brady has had a great year, but why doesn't he scramble for more yards?". Yes, MM drops a few passes, but, on par, he is better than any other viable alternative we have. I'm not that concerned - Lloyd's recruiting seems to puke out quality receivers, so I'm sure that between Stonum, Hemingway, Clemons, and Webb we'll piece together a corps to go along w/ Mathews.

Gravatar Don't know if anyone saw this or already posted this in the comments:

Rodriguez's Family Faces Harassment

You stay classy, Appalachia. This is why it's hard for me to sympathize with West F--king Virginia, even though Viking Bill took their basketball and football coaches. Their fans are just so awful, and have always been this way.

Gravatar Just out of curiosity, Cfaller, yesterday, voiced a concern that Michigan would cease to be a "QB and WR factory", and wondered if that label was worth losing for more wins. I don't want to pick on him, because he's probably the most agreeable person on these boards - but that struck me as odd. Does anyone else prize those things more than wins?

Gravatar (and Cfaller, I know you backed off the statement and concluded that wins were more important, but I was surprised that a number of people agreed with your initial comment)

Gravatar MLive is reporting Brandon Smith was injured in a basketball game last night. Anybody know anything?

Gravatar Chitown - I'll take wins any day over sending WRs and QBs to the NFL. However, I hope that we can do both. I'd much rather have a pass-based spread a la the Patriots than have a running QB who can hardly throw and has to be converted to a WR in the NFL to have any chance there. Winning is great for the school, obviously, but there's also a lot to be said about a school that can tunr out quality pros.

Gravatar In the sense that I watch more of the NFL and enjoy it more, I do like seeing quality Michigan guys there (Tom Brady, however, is an exception after the past 6 years of OMFGBRADY hysteria).

But I wouldn't trade wins for it really.

Gravatar Do you have a link, NewYorkBlue? If that's true, looks like we need to find yet another safety for next year.

Gravatar During the season I'll admit, nobody was more disgusted with Mallett than this guy, but regardless what you think of him, he was what we had. If none of these other recruits pan out, and Threet doesn't set the world on fire, we may be in a world of hurt. Then we're all gonna wonder and pine for what could have been had manboy Mallett gotten a season or two under his belt.

Gravatar I'll have to agree with Dex on this one....I just don't understand the Mallett bashing???

The kid made a really tough decision last year when he was offered scholarships by 50 schools. He picked Michigan because it was a system that churnes out NFL style, pocket passing QB's (which is obv what he is). He gets some time freshman year and is pretty much set up to fail in some tough spots. Overall he shows some promise but not a big enough sample size to really pass judgement. (limited playcalling & run, run, pass) Sure he was immature at times and was an 18 year old kid for most of the season. He is obviously a confident kid so he probably thought the gameplan should have been the same whether he or Chad were in there (I don't fault him for that). It got him into some trouble and he clashed with some people here and there. In my mind it was because he is competitive, and wanted to win at all costs. (sometimes that brings out the worst in people)

Then after his freshman season ends his head coach retires, his entire staff that recruited him to this system is fired. A new coach comes in who would NEVER recruit him, and who runs an offense that doesn't really fit him. He starts to think about transferring which is EXACTLY what everyone on this board would do given the same situation.

Now you might say well RR wanted him here, and it could have workd, bla bla bla. I do believe that RR talked to him, but I don't believe for a second that he truly wanted him here, and RM probably knows that. He gave him the Steinbrenner to Torre speech "We want you, we think this can work, but". I think RR knows that he has a great chance of landing Pryor w-out RM, and he was fine with going with Threet if that didn't work out. He probably also knows if he doesn't get TP then he has a good chance of getting the #1 dual threat guy next year, so no worries about RM.

Regardless my point is it's awfully immature to bash this kid for transferring. I wish him the best. For those who ARE bashing him, please don't gleam with pride in four years when he is in the NFL ala Gutierrez.

Gravatar blog.mlive.com/thediag/

Gravatar Johnny Sideburns, thanks for the reply...i think the reason this spread (including option) will stick around it b/c of the evolution of the QB at the HS level. 10-15-20 years ago, the only QBs teams recruited were drop back guys. no speed, little athleticism. these day, the best athletes are the QBs in HS...same as always i guess BUT: they now have strong arms, are 6-4+, and have been coached to be QBs from a young age.

it used to be that TP, VY type guys were coached at a young age to be runners..sure they'd take snaps at QB, but they wouldn't throw too much or need to learn to read defenses as much. these days you can find athletic guys who are fairly well prepared to be Qbs.

re: mallett..i've been as underwhelmed w/ his play and (apparent/semi-assumed, admittedly) attitude as anyone here. but let's not get the pitchforks out. i don't think he played too well or gave a full effort/respect to the preparation level needed to succeed at that level..but he owes me nothing, and owes M not much more. he has to make the best decision for him, and if that means transferring, fine. i just hope another 5* QB doesn't commit to ucla/ark while he's sitting on the bench, b/c nothing is set in stone.

Gravatar Does anyone have an opinion on what OSU Juniors are going to leave this year? I see Gholston, Malcom Jenkins, Lauranitis...maybe Marcus Freeman? Anyone else?

Gravatar Shoot. I've said for a couple weeks now that RM would be FOOLISH to leave unless (a) RR has told him that he'll be replaced as soon as possible (or RM believes this to be the case); (b) TP is coming; (c) some other coach out there has promised Mallet the starting gig as soon as the one year "wait" period has ended; or some combination of the above. RM is many things, but he's clearly got his eyes on the prize (NFL) and would probalby not do anything too foolish to jeapardize that. So my guess is that if he really is leaving, it's probably a good decision for him, and one or more of the above reasons have been confirmed.

Gravatar I agree with dex and Meechigan. Mallett has apparently made the decision that he wants to transfer, presumably based upon his determination that he's not a great fit in RR's offense. That's certainly not an unreasonable conclusion, given that as soon as RR was hired, we were all wondering how the system would work with Mallett as QB (I would have liked to see him stick around, and think he could have done fine in the system, but he has to make the decision he believes is best for him).

Mallett hasn't criticized the program. He hasn't embarrassed himself or the University. He hasn't badmouthed the coaching hire. Yes, he appeared to have an attitude and clashed with Coach Carr and Manningham at least once on the sideline. He's a teenager. He's immature. I'm not trying to excuse his behavior, but I am saying given the circumstances, calling him a "piece of shit" and a "hillbilly" are beyond fucked up. He's done nothing to deserve that.

Here's my other question for everything that's calling him our right now - what if he didn't know that Lloyd Carr was retiring at the end of this season (and I'm guessing he didn't when he committed to the program)? He came to the school thinking he'd have 3-4 years to develop his skills in a certain style of offense, and after year one, everyone who recruited him is gone, and the system to which he committed is replaced by one in which he's clearly not a perfect fit. Is it so wrong for him to reconsider whether Michigan is the best place for him given that he had no notice that the program was going to undergo a dramatic change after his first year?

Without a doubt, Mallett has a ton of growing up to do. But I know very few 19-year olds who don't.

Gravatar dammit

Gravatar re: OSU guys

Marcus Freeman said in the Dayton Daily News the other day that he is definitely coming back. I'm pretty sure Jenkins has at least paid lip service to staying. I know a die-hard OSU fan (who reads the insider board on bucknuts everyday) who thinks Gholston is gone. All of this could change, of course, and I don't claim any insider/expert status.

Gravatar He came to the school thinking he'd have 3-4 years to develop his skills in a certain style of offense,...

Gnarls, i agree w/ everything you said...but it sure didn't seem to me like he put a lot of effort into developing his skills over the last 11 months.

Gravatar Have I missed anything or is it still just the same stuff being said about RM from yesterday?

Gravatar DanK - that's a fair point. As I said in an earlier post on this thread, for whatever reason, it did appear as if Mallett was regressing as the season progressed.

Gravatar Laurinaitis and Jenkins seem to be consensus 1st rounders, so I have to think they are giving serious thought to leaving. The scouting reports on Gholston say 2nd round, so less likely but who knows. Gholston, if he stays at OSU, is probably going to have a monster year and end up Top 10 next year, so I guess it depends on how soon he wants that NFL money.

Gravatar Doesn't Tressel usually encourage his players to leave if he believes they're going to be picked in the first round? I hope so.

Gravatar @chitown

You're a little confused about what I was saying. I would gladly and quickly give up the NFL pedigree if I knew for sure it would result in more wins, conference champs, and national champs.

But my point was that some are not willing to do that, which I don't understand. Specifically, The Truth and Blue-n-Proud explicitly said upthread that losing the NFL farm label is something to be mourned.

But to be clear, I could give a rat's ass about our NFL pedigree, if I knew it was holding the program back. Short of cheating, do what you have to do to win. I don't care if that means bringing back the wishbone, but do what you have to do.

Gravatar Why is there nothing new up? It's been over 12 hours since RR's halftime bombshells and Brian hasn't commented?

Gravatar Point taken, CFaller. I clearly was confused, so...mea culpa.

Gravatar I think it's a non-issue. How many teams win a national title without producing some NFL talent? The pro stars aren't always at the high visibility skill positions, but national title teams are putting a healthy amount of defensive, o-line, and other guys into the league. It's not like Army is winning BCS games.

Gravatar BRCE, what are you referring to, ie, "halftime bombshells"?

Gravatar From outside perspective, it seems like Mallett hasn't had the experience he was hoping for at Michigan. Combining that with the new coaching staff and offensive strategy and I think he has every right to leave if he wants to.

Mallett didn't have the year we all hoped he would, at least as far as him leading us like Chad did his freshman year. But upon further review I'm going to try and set aside being mad at him until I know the entire story. I think Mallett is going to be a great QB, it is a shame that he won't be doing it here, but I also think that he has to make a decision now because he is crippling our ability to recruit another stud QB if he is sitting on the fence.

Hence why I love what Rodriguez has done here. He basically publicly called out Mallett, and that needed to be done. Letting him sit around and make a decision after spring ball is a pretty selfish and arrogant move on his part that seemingly shows that he is all about himself and not about the team. The QB first and foremost has to be about the team, and if he doesn't love Michigan enough to already know that he wants to stay, then I wish him all the best elsewhere.

Like I said, I think he'll be a monster QB someday, so good luck.

Gravatar I think a lot of people take solace in the UM program that UM produces a lot of NFL products -- especially when UM isn't beating OSU or winning bowl games.

If we start competing in the NC picture, who cares about NFL products? If we continue to dance on the periphery of the NC landscape and don't produce NFL products, well, that would stink.

Gravatar One small item about Mallett.
He didn't start thinking about transferring when the coaches were fired. It's pretty common knowledge among the students (my daughter being one of them) that RM has been thinking and talking about transferring all fall. I was shocked when I first heard about it in October. I think fired coaches was the last straw, not the thing that got the ball rollin'.

I think he - or any other student - should go where they have the best programs to fit his needs and wants. If, after a year, he has concluded that's not UM, then I'd thank him for coming and wish him the best of luck. OTOH, he has been here a year, so there's no need for all this intrigue. He's not going to get any new information tomorrow that he didn't have yesterday. Make your decision and get on with it. If he just wants to be adored by the new coaches, then RR is right to show him the door.

Gravatar @dex, other RM defenders

He didn't show up to a team meeting, and gave no explanation for that. I was willing to cut the kid some slack, but c'mon. Show up to the f--king meeting like everybody else. If you can't do that, then you can't be a part of the team.

We're getting awfully, awfully close to "he's an a--hole" territory, dex. Stop playing the "we don't know anything" card, because I highly doubt RichRod is going to lie in a presser about Ryan Mallett's attendance at a team meeting. Eventually, you're going to have to trust the coach when he says "don't care, he's not playing for Michigan."

Also- does anyone seriously think RichRod HASN'T discussed RM with Lloyd? That seems implausible. I assume they have conversed about him, and thus I have to assume Lloyd's ok with giving Ryan some rough treatment. If both Lloyd and RichRod are on the same page about RM, then why waste time defending the guy?

Seriously- if you've played team sports, then you know that not showing up for a team meeting is a serious offense, because it strongly implies that you're "better" or "above" the rest of the team. It's not tolerated for a reason. No matter how many *s you had coming out of HS, no matter how much rocket fuel is in your arm, no matter how old you are...if you can't grace us with your presence, then f--k you.

Gravatar In case anybody is still checking these posts, Ryan left Ann Arbor this morning. He's driving to wherever it is he's going to play. He's also "sad" to leave his gf who he will probably cheat on (again) as soon as he gets to his new spot.

Gravatar If you were going to UCLA or Tenn and left her here you'd cheat on her too

Gravatar He's driving to UCLA? Weird.

Gravatar Nick

I agree. Weigh your options. A 10 at UofM is about 4 - 6 at UCLA, and that's being pretty generous.

Gravatar @dex
I think it's a non-issue. How many teams win a national title without producing some NFL talent?

Well, I think the debate mostly centers around the Michigan QBs, and how having so many of them go on to the pros is a valuable recruiting tool. We all presume (rightly or wrongly) that bringing in the spread and moving to a balanced/running spread will shut off the 'Michigan QB to the NFL' spigot, and will hurt our QB recruiting.

But even if that assumption is correct, that will only hurt our recruiting of NFL-type QBs, and should theoretically be balanced out by the spread helping our recruiting of mobile/mobile-ish QBs that previously would never consider Michigan.

So, if the spread is a better offense in general, then there's no reason to mourn the loss of our NFL QB pedigree, IMO. Our loss in recruiting NFL-type QBs will be washed by the gain in recruiting mobile QBs. As long as we think that RichRod's offense is better than Lloyd/[NAME REDACTED], then f--k the NFL.

Gravatar NFL prospects vs. National Titles

I'm not going back a long time because, well, I think this is a long enough time frame.

2000 Oklahoma
10 future NFL draft picks, 2 future UFA

2001 Miami
16 1st rounders, produced Ed Reed, Andre Johnson, Shockey, Ken Dorsey, Clinton Portis, and Bryant McKinnie and a host of others.

2002 OSU
At least 10 from a quick glance at the roster.

2003 LSU
At least 8, probably a couple more I'm not recognizing

2004 USC
At least 11

2005 Texas
15 so far

2006 UF
2 1st rounders so far

So, if we want to win MNCs, we're going to have NFL caliber players. It's not going to happen if we don't. A non-issue.

Gravatar @cfaller

I totally believe RR when he says Mallett doesn't play for Michigan. And that's why I don't think the team meeting is important- it sounds like he has already made it clear to Rod and UM he is gone, so why would he continue to attend meetings? My problem with the he is a asshole argument is people basing it on what they saw on ESPN on the sideline.

And yes, I've played a lot of team sports, thanks. That's why I can safely say every time you see someone yelling at someone else on the sideline it doesn't mean they are a cancer.

Gravatar Once again, I 100% agree with dex

Gravatar Anyone else concerned we dont have DC yet?

Gravatar xyz- No, RR said it would be done by the weekend

Gravatar Cool, I missed that.

Gravatar xyz- If you haven't heard this yet:

http://www.michigan.rivals.com/c....asp? CID=759477

Gravatar Darn, dont have speakers here. Can I trouble anyone for a brief summary?

Gravatar Gholston in the 2nd round and Laurinitis in the 1st? That seems backward to me, but what do I know?

I think that Laurinitis would be much better off staying for his senior year, but if he wants to get schooled in the NFL that's just fine by me!

Gravatar Anybody have any idea how RR is going to fill an entire class of 25? We have 17 now, and I am assuming 1 or 2 will leave decommit. But assume best case and we keep all 17. Who fills the other 8 spots?

Perry, Floyd, Pryor (all maybes) and Woods would still leave room for 4 wildcards.

Gravatar AA texted him he's gone, MM is pretty much gone since RR hasn't heard from him, DC- "Ill have it done by this weekend".

Question to RR "Do you want to wait to hear what Mallett has to say before you comment on him?" RR- "Don't care, He isn't playing for Michigan, I'm concerned with whose playing for Michigan"

Gravatar Anybody know a reputable mock draft source? (contradiction in terms, I know.) Everything I've found seems to vary wildly.

PS, I've found hardly any mention of Arrington going in the first 3 rounds...

Gravatar @ Chief: I'm hoping Brian posts a recruiting round up so we can discuss this. Baldwin is a longshot. Regardless of Pryor, I expect another QB to be added (Britt? JuCo? Gray?). Keanon Cooper is still a possibility. That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Gravatar @Meechigan,

Thanks for the heads up.

Gravatar @dex

So if RM isn't playing for Michigan and is transferring, why not just say so? Ryan isn't saying anything and his dad's pretending there's been no decision. Why be coy about it, if the decision's already been made?

He hasn't made it clear to RichRod, at least not in a responsible fashion. RichRod didn't say "Ryan told me he's gone," RichRod said "he didn't show up to a meeting, so I assume he's gone."

That's what's pissing me off. You want to transfer, fine, no biggie, sad to see you go but good luck anyway. But you want to pretend you haven't made up your mind, and in the meantime not adhere to your responsibilities to the team that you implicitly claim you're still part of? No, not ok, and indicative of someone that believes the rules don't apply to him.

Unless and until you announce to the team and the coaches that you're gone, then you still have obligations to that team. And if you've decided to transfer, you have an obligation to tell the team and the coaches yourself. Ryan hasn't done that, otherwise RichRod would have said so.

Enough. I'm done with this guy.

Gravatar baldwin announced to pitt, yes/no?

Gravatar @ cfaller: I'm convinced RM is waiting to see where Loeffler ends up before he says anything. He should still say, "I'm transferring, but I'm still exploring where."

Gravatar Anyone know if verbal committ recruit Elliott Mealer is gonna be playing with the team next year. I know he was in a car accident over the holidays but never heard if he was seriously injured and if it would effect his playing career. i've never really heard anyone say anything on this and thought it was worth inquiring about. thanks gang. GO BLUE!

Gravatar @Gnarls Woodson

Tressell encourages his players to ask for those NFL reports on where they're expected to be drafted (so you always see a lot of Buckeyes ask for them). I don't know that he encourages them to leave if they're projected as first rounders, but he certainly doesn't try to hold them back. This is my understanding from my OSU-fan friends, anyway...

Gravatar Yes, Baldwin announced to Pitt, but there are rumblings he's decommiting. I haven't seen any firm info one way or the other on that. Hence the "longshot" status.

Gravatar "Do you want to see what RM has to say"
"I don't care. He's not playing for Michigan."

Love it. He's not at the team meeting RR doesn't want him here no matter who he is. Reminds me of Bo from what I've read in his new book.

Speaking of the book, ran into John U Bacon last night in Sweetwater. I just complimented him on the book and he was about as gracious, kind, and personable as could be. Good man.

Gravatar i don't think mealer was seriously injured.

Gravatar @MRG

Then he should still be going to team meetings, or do what you suggested- tell the team and the coaches he's transferring. At least then he'd have an explanation for why he's not showing up to a meeting.

Playing it coy is tolerable by itself, but being coy combined with not being part of the team? Unacceptable, which is essentially what RichRod said.

Gravatar @cfaller

Fair enough. That still doesn't mean I'm on board with the ridiculously over the top "hillbilly" and "pussy" bashing that has been thrown around. It's not worth it. And to see it coming from people who bash WVU for how they are handling Rodriguez ditching them seems hypocritical. Different strokes though.

Gravatar And I assume it's already been posted but just in case: Brandon Smith injured his leg playing basketball.

Sweet...

Gravatar For the record, I never called Ryan Mallett a hillbilly pussy. WFV fans are hillbilly trash, however, for threatening RichRod's family. Bastards.

Gravatar http://www.dailymail.com/Sports/...ts/ 200801090255

Is this old news?

Gravatar And dammit. Erin Andrews was at Crisler for the Indiana game. Knew I should have gone.

Gravatar Sorry, new computer at work. The old news above is me.

Gravatar Here's my uninformed opinion:
Who Qb'd the Nat Champs this year? Flynn Perriloux - highly doubtful he will be a pro QB. Conversely, the other team in the MNC game - I don't think Boeckman will be stiing in front of an ESPN camera on draft day(even though he's not leaving for NFL(you get the point).
Last year : Chris Leak is bagging groceries in Chicago now.

None of the top propects for QB(except Brennan) played new years day of later(unless you count Henne, as well).
I don't think an NFL QB is what is needed to win a NC.

Gravatar AA texted him to say he's going pro, MM hasn't returned to Ann Arbor and missed a team meeting, so he assume the same for him. Mallett is leaving (discussed ad nauseum). He still wants to do a few interviews before naming a DC, but he expects to have that settled by next week so the guys will know who their position coaches are. Michigan is in good shape for recruiting even without the coaching staff being finalized -- you only need seven guys and he has nine.

Gravatar i don't think mealer was seriously injured.

Gravatar excuse the numerous typos in my last post. Wow.

Gravatar I think we should hire a chimp to be the DC.

Gravatar On Mealer: If his family members and girlfriend were killed, it could seriously change things for him. I hope not.

Gravatar Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but according to Bruce Feldman's chat on espn, "When [Feldman] talked to Darryl Stonum Sat he said Michigan only has 4 WRs in the program now."

Gravatar I agree that we shouldn't bash Mallet. If thats what he decides to do then more power to him. However, I love the way RR handled it and basically forced his hand. Also, Im not worried about the NFL pedigree. I mean look at Florida and Florida st. and USC. EVERY florida qb has sucked balls in the pros yet they have three 5* qbs on roster. Nearly every reciever has been a bust with a few exceptions yet they still get the Percy harvins of the world. Florida st just signed E.J Manuel and they havent had a qb do shit so im not to worried about it.

Gravatar Fundamentally, we need to attract players who want to play football for the University of Michigan, not players who see college as simply an extended NFL tryout.

If they're good, the NFL will come in due time.

Gravatar According to Det Free Press - Mallett is gone and maybe heading to Tennessee with Loefler and Debord. AA issued statement today saying he is gone too. Apologize if this has already been posted. Hiring Debord will result in Fullmer being gone within 3 years.
