Well, McGuffie committed a long time ago. Presumably, that means he was pretty comfortable with Carr and Co. When Rich came in, I think it's unsurprising he wasn't so sure anymore, and since we picked up so many de-commits on Signing Day, I think it's obvious a lot of coaches were probably in touch with McGuffie as well.
But, while he wavered (not unlike a bride with cold feet on her engagement night) he did pick Michigan. So, I think the whole episode is fairly meaningless.

I actually celebrated the day I was laid-off as I despised my job. This is actually about the article. One of the things that was so frustrating was never seeing a lot of guys (especially the meh recruits) improve, or get a chance to. I think this will change with the new coaches. How many guys do you think wasted their football careers by coming here and then being labeled by the coaches as in the dog house or never going to be good enough. I always found it interesting how depth was an issue and we really never had a strong two-deep across the field. If a star went down, the team went down. How much of that comes from Carr not playing/developing enough guys?

I actually did tech PR for years for eBay and Microsoft. In fact, it was eBay dialing back their PR budget that caused my layoff. The point is, I've considered Washington as they have an (obviously) huge tech sector there. But it is a damn long ways from home...

My opinion comes from traveling to and through Texas on several occasions. But what really fucked that state for me was my two weeks in El Paso. God what a friggin' nightmare that place is.
After highschool I traveled America for 3 1/2 years. I've seen a lot of this country and El Paso is a clear and defined number one on my list of "Worst Places in America".

Funny thing about M ball---they got the best possible bracket I think. Facing Wisconsin (whom they played very tough) and then either OSU or MSU (they controlled OSU mostly this year)...
Who knows---by avoiding Purdue, Indiana and Minnesota, they might have a run in them yet.
I don't know if they still do it. But you could get cheap flights out of Bellingham (just north of Seattle) to the mid-west pretty cheap ($100 flights) The tech sector is huge out here.

I can't emphasize how much I agree with your ideas about depth and the lack of player development. How many times have we had guys who were supposedly All-World come in and be meh at best? I always wondered why that happened, I'm excited at the prospect of it not being the norm.
how (much more) pathetic would we be if we couldn't shoot free throws so well this year? Man, this is the first time in my life that I'm a fan of a team that shoots well from the line. I also think it'll come in handy in following years when we get a bit more talent.

Anyone else cautiously optimistic about Steve Threet? I read on a thread at umgoblue.com that he's really become a leader at spring practice. Things like asking receivers to stay after practice to work on routes and meeting with them on the weekends. I seem to remember a certain team last year who had quarterback issues going in. Turned out alright for them. This kid could be decent.

I have a question about a particular offensive play that I have seen twice and am trying to find the name of. Once was during the Sun Bowl between Oregon and USF. A second time was the first play of the playoff game between the Tennessee Titans and the Chargers. It is a spread formation. I can't remember how many receivers were used or in what position (x, z, or y). After everyone gathered at the LOS before the snap, 2 or more OL spread out the side to join the receivers. There were the mandated 7 players at the LOS, but with only 2-3 OL at the center.
Here is a rough idea of what it looks like using x's for players. Don't laugh! I have never played organized football and NCAA football 08 is the extent my X's and O's knowledge, which I have been working on so I can understand the game much better.

well bassed on how you are explaining it, it could be the old, florida spread that people run from time to time....
basicly it looks like a bunch trips to both sides, excpet the inside man on both sides, is actually an offensive tackle... teams will run swing passes to that, or fades, or run the ball if you spread out too mcuh...
the other thing, if they are all gatherd to one side, with a single reciever left on the the other side, that is the old muddle huddle or swinging gate, that you see teams run on extra points from time to time....

we called it the florida spread so you would have a center and two guards, then outside you would have a tackle, a wr, then a wr lined up behind them... thats at both sides... behind the center you would have the qb and a running back...
the two outside recivers, the recivers behind them and the tailback are all eligable recievers... the 2 tackles 2 guards and center are not...

That seems like the play. In fact, that was exactly what Oregon did. They like to go for the 2-pt conversion after the first score, so they did that play after their first score in the Sun Bowl. I predicted USF would win that game, but they totally got ass-raped by Oregon led by a back-up QB. I guess Ben Moffitt's wife didn't help prepare him for that one.

Sorry I'm late to this, I had to run to Seattle. Gsimms summed it up pretty well. Sometimes you will see a 2 guards and a center and then two TE split out with a trips set around them. This is because TE's can block better in space. It's hard to cover but it has diminishing returns. As long as 7 are on the LOS, they can be anywhere they want. We used to play a team that ran an "Elmer" formation (don't laugh...okay laugh) it was an option team that would line up with two tackles on one side and one would be eligible. It was weird the first time you would see it, mainly because we were 17 and incompetent, but weird none the less. Hope that helps, I'm out for a day or two.
just keep in mind that there has to be at least 5 ineligable numbers on the field for every offensive play...

Anyway, GREAT job, Brian, especially with #2. The Schembechler regime (at least from the late '80s to... now) seldom seemed to value the defensive line. Its sole purpose, to them, was to get in the way of the opposing team's O line so that the linebackers could make tackles. Our best players there (Pryce and Bowens) were, interestingly, run out of town.
Might want to rethink that McGuffie/Devine comparison...
