As for everyone else...have you ever read BHGP? The only people who are actually "haters" at the moment are citizens and fans of West Virginia. Everyone else is just kinda...there. I mean, I don't think there's a ton to this story, which is why I've advocated a wait and see approach. But if there really is something there, then it's pretty not cool of RR. And people from other schools who point that out aren't "haters" as much as they're just telling the truth.

That included asterisks stating **might not be the truth at the bottom of the article. As in, we are not serious, this is a joke and everything in this post is a joke.
It isn't about Iowa fans getting uppity and thinking they are on par with the mighty Michigan or something batshit retarded theory like that.
And yet people wonder why everyone else in the country thinks Michigan fans are arrogant, whiny, and a terrible burden to deal with. This is the kind of shit storm I'd expect from Buckeyes when someone dare make a little fun of their program.

Ok, so answer me, do you read BHGP?
I do. As much as I read mgoblog.
Over the past 6 monthsish I've been reading, I can recall one serious post. And it was about Iowa football players committing crimes, sex assault I believe, and they felt it was inappropriate to joke.
Every other post has been humor oriented.
So, your theory, is that all of a sudden, BHGP decided they wanted to run some sort of journalistic, serious minded, hit piece on Rich Rodriguez?
Or..
Was it a joke? Hmmm...

Dex, dude, I agree with about 98% of everything you ever write here.
But, I'm willing to bet that 99% of the Iowa haterade that was spewing about this afternoon as a result of the BHGP issue was caused because most us, myself included, DON'T read BHGP. So no, we did not realize it was a joke. I did my due diligence, poked around their site for a few minutes, and figured that it probably was meant in jest.
However, the fact that people here don't have your familiarity with BHGP doesn't make them assholes - it just means they didn't know.
The people that took the "BHGP is being assholes, that means I will rail about how uppity and assholeish the entire state of Iowa is" are dumb, and should be killed, yes.

My take on it that most people in the country really have no idea as to the soap opera going on here with WVU.
The stories initially leak out, and people who don't like Michigan use them to confirm their biases.
Others have their interest piqued, look into it further, and inevitably conclude, "Holy shit, those WVU people are completely insane."
So people see what they want to see, to a large extent. I don't see any long-term damage. If it all goes south for WVU, it could actually help us.

Toledo has its good points, but my most recent memory of it is my visit to the Toledo Ice House, an ice arena across the street from the GM powertrain plant. I went there to shoot a high school hockey game, and I may not go back; between the wet ice (standing water behind one goal) and the heavy gas fumes (old zamboni+poor ventilation), it wasn't a pleasant experience.
But I hear Mudhens games are fun.

You know what I find amazing about the whole RR/WVU fiaso? I have not heard one single fan response that is something like "Well, it sucks that you're leaving, Rich, and I don't like the way you've handled it, but thanks for making WVU football relevant and giving us a base to build on in the future. WVU fans need to realize that without RR, they would be absolutely nothing right now. I think the problem is that WVU has an inflated sense of its status in the college football world.
I'm from Mt. Pleasant, MI, and I remember when Brian Kelley left CMU in a questionable fashion, not coaching in the bowl game, many fans were still thankful that he had put them on the map and cleaned up DeBord's mess so they could continue to rebuild and grow. CMU fans understood that there are better places for a coach's career than CMU, and WVU fans need to start to understand that too. If RR ever decides to leave for the NFL, I'll understand that to some coaches, there are better places to coach than Michigan. And I'll wish him well and be thankful for restoring Michigan football to its rightful place.

well, within a few minutes, you usually know what defeenses you are seeing, then its a matter of trying to find tendencies, down and distance stuff, how they play certain plays etc. then you draw up your plays against how you think thye will play it, and figure out what to work on that week, throw out, or put in, and different scenarios for what they might do to counter your movements...
then during the game, you need yoru spoters, and players to bre able to tell you how things are being adjusted on the field...

Did you watch the game? I caught the end and Knight took the mic for what looked like a speech about 900, but ended up saying something like "we had a full house FOR ONCE and you fans were great." Dont know how true this is...but HA!
It could be that I think I'm on time but I'm already late...
January 15, 2008: Ohio State Applies for Membership in the SEC.
It's just been a week and already the fallout from Ohio State's 4th quarter collapse against the LSU Tigers has started. In a surprise move, in the spirit of "if you can't beat them - join them", the Athletic Director of Ohio State University has formally applied to become a member of the SEC. The Big Ten had initially filed a protest until the SEC reciprocated by offering a two-for-one deal packaging Mississippi and South Carolina.
Hesitant at first, the Big Ten director accepted because he reasoned that now the Big Ten will now have 12 teams and can earn some much needed respect among its conference peers by adding a conference championship game. The SEC officials were giggling as they left the room saying, "I can't believe they fell for it. We traded two cellar-dwellers for a team that will be average in the SEC. Now we only have 11 teams. [{chuckle-chuckle} - no more curs-ed championship game - now we can back a team into the National Championship game every year. The situation was explained delicately to South Carolina and Mississippi, but neither team minded because now they will both have a shot at winning seasons and bowl games.
Sensing the end of his gravy train, Jim Tressel pleaded his case to the Big Ten admin saying "really, we're gonna beat them this time", but was told "we've trusted you for seven years now, just as we had the coaches before you, and we just can't take your word for it anymore. We hope you can understand."

Dude, we talked about Mallett for like...a day after he left, maybe two, with each other (fellow UM fans)...not for over a month with anyone on God's green earth who'll listen including every media outlet that would publish a story...and then some. Unless you're including the speculative "is he or isn't he?" stuff, which doesn't really count. Anywho, count how many times we've said "Pryor" or any misspelled variation and "Threet" or the name of any other QB we want/have, compared to how many times we've written "Mallett"...do the same for "RichRod" or any derogatory variation and "Coach Stew" and lemme know how that goes, lol. It's not really comparable.

I agree 100000000%. I think Mario has a sketchy future as a pro, and I am not optimistic at all about AA. Although with one more year of college experience, I do think AA would have been better equipped to succeed. The NFL isn't a terribly patient place to get experience.

Word is that RR's lawyers asked WVU not to say anything about the document issues, and they said, F-U. Allegedly, the anonymous source of the Charleston story was someone on the coaching staff and was put up to it by the AD. (please note, I said "allegedly".) If this is true, it only bolsters the fact that even the powers that-be at WVU and in the AD have no common sense.
I have a feeling that Rod's answer to the complaint will include a counter-complaint for defamation. Those damages could be worth a lot more than $4 million. (This is not an attempt to threadjack for another legal discussion, just my own speculation.)

Exactly.... If he came back and refined his game he would be much more equipped for the NFL, regardless of the "offense changing".
The NFL is a "what can you do for me now league". If you can't contribute right away, (and you aren't a first or second round pick with money invested) you get released... end of story.
Anon |
01.17.08 - 9:41 am | #

Exactly, AA is obviously banking on being able to contribute right away and while it's possible, I just don't think it's likely. Nobody is going to sit on him for four seasons and babysit him there.
As much as I hate to speculate about his personal motivation issues and such, I don't know if he can handle the NFL. Lloyd had to hold his hand through stadium steps and such to keep him in line, but NFL coaches don't have time for that. You can definitely get away with being a headcase in the NFL, especially at WR, but the ones who do that and stay in the league are guys like TO and Ocho Cinco. If you don't keep your shit together and contribute, well, look where FredEx is right now.

That's what BHGP did. Brian is right to bury the heatchet and move on, but their post was horseshit and they shouldn't make a habit of it. For one thing, the "humor" in it wasn't exaggerated enough to be of EDSBS or MZone quality. If they're going to try to run with those horses they need to improve their craft.

The thing about AA going pro is that he's essentially basing his draft position off of one stellar game. He was awesome vs. Florida. Other than than, please show me where he was anything approaching dominant. He was a good 2nd banana for one year, and good 3rd banana for another. He can probably make some hay in the redzone catching fades. Other than that, he's a possession receiver. A possession receiver with extensively documented personal issues. Draft him in the first round!

Anyone chillin on the Haloscan last week (or so...) may recall the bitter screed penned by Easterbrook, and the response I submitted to the ESPN ombudsman regarding the truly unsubstantiated and outright falsehoods perpetuated in Easterbrook's article (regarding the timing of RichRod's hiring, the pitt game, etc.).
Some requests were made for notification of any response I might receive from the WWL, and since I don't have Brian's email address handy, I'm posting here for all to read (feel free to cut & paste, and forward to Brian if you so choose). It is nothing exciting, and looks to be standard boilerplate mumbojumbo...

I cannot respond personally to all the mail I receive, but I do read and take note of all complaints. When the complaints are specific to a show or to an article on espn.com, I forward them to the producer or editor in charge of that content. When there are several complaints on the same topic, I do a weekly tabulation that becomes part of a report sent to all of ESPN's top management. (I do the same for positive comments.) I cannot assure you that your complaints or mine will result in action, but I can assure you they are not lost in some cyberspace void. They are read, thought about, disseminated.

The capacity doesn't rule out the Shoe, but his reference to a college town should rule out Columbus; it didn't really feel like a college town when I was there. But I doubt Pryor sees it like that.

Why doesn't Carty go after the University of Michigan? What the fuck do you expect RR to do, pay the $$M out of his own bank account from what he earned previously? No way.
I say it's M's duty to step in and say "All right, enough of this nonsense. Rich, here's $7 million, that should take care of Uncle Sam and WVU. Go pay them and let's play some football!"

Carty's blog is teh suxx0rz.
Your average college football fan - having read about the Pryor incident and how Rodriguez quit - could find it very believable the coach was shredding docs faster than an Enron executive, and shredding them for a reason.
Unless, you know, a reporter did his job and gathered these things called facts and, like, reported them to the average college football fan. This is called journalism, isn't it?

Bill Martin surely had some expectations about how WVU would deal post-Rodriguez, based on what happened with Beilein. I'm sure he didn't count on WVU and state officials going virtual postal on Rod, thinking that an institution of higher education (allegedly) would behave, you know, rationally.
Of course, Rod isn't paying the buyout all himself. But with all that has happened, maybe everyone's letting the chips fall to help negotiate a reduced sum for the buyout.

I just think that at this point knocking some money off of the buyout isn't worth the PR damage. $7M is a pimple on the ass of M's vast monentary resources. Hell, just have a booster pay it and put his name on one of the towers of the new stadium expansion.

I don't necessarily disagree with you, but now, with apparently false accusations against RR, the waters have been muddied. As I said earlier, a counterclaim for defamation wouldn't surprise me in the least. If the U had just kept its mouth shut about the files, shredding, etc., the buyout is the only PR issue. And if there's a counterclaim and a subsequent settlement for less than $4M, then RR gets a chance at vindication.

I think every time TP opens his mouth he says something to get somebody else riled up. I can't blame him, if I was being recruited and haggled for like he is I would become jaded and start playing mind games. I still think he eventualy picks tOSU. I'm not trying to be a debbie downer or anything, I just think we got back into the mix a little too late.

I am sure Carty still has all of the documents he had in his hovel when he covered Rutgers. In fact, I ask all of the reporters making a big deal out of this to show me every memo they have ever receieved from every job they have ever had. Ridiculous.
When I cange jobs, the only documents I keep is the ones I need to cover my ass in case something blows up after I leave - such as a boss telling me to do something I do not agree with. Other than that it is shred o rama.

The phone records thing is really insane. This is one of the most pathetic negative PR campaigns I have ever seen. Are there no more mail boxes the smash or coaches to burn in the entire state of WV?
My only question is whether this will have a negative impact in the short-term on recruiting (especially when we seem to be in a neck and neck race with tOSU for Terrelle Pryor)?

I genuinely believe this won't impact recruiting. These kids want to go somewhere, by and large, that they think will showcase them for the pros. They're going to choose the school that best accomplishes that - whether the coach is getting sued doesn't really change the math for them.

I don't see what's scandalous about talking to Butch Jones ad nauseum. Anyone have a clue?
I think the information in the article would be more damning if it showed he was calling recruits, etc., before he announced his resignation - but it doesn't show that. It may not have been the best idea, but if I'm on the road, and need to call people, I'm going to use the phone that's in my pocket and not get into who pays for it. I don't see this as evidence of evil.
What shocks me, though, is how this hearing regarding the buyout is getting turned, by WVU and press, into a referendum on RR's character, regardless of whether the info is relevant. I mean, what, really, does RR's phone records AFTER he announced his resignation have to do with whether he breached his contract with WVU?

Re: Threet.
I think it's impossible to say whether we'd "be OK" with Threet. He hasn't played competitively for nearly one full, entire year - he's an absurdly unknown quantity. On one hand, he was a fairly highly regarded recruit last year. On the other, when at GT, he got jumped by one recruit who was in his class on the depth chart, and felt like he'd be behind a freshman incoming this year - resigning him to 3rd string forever.

But "mobile for a big guy" doesn't = "mobile" (he ran a 5.2. That's like a D-lineman). If Cone's role was to hand the ball to the running back - not to throw, and not to run himself (he had 60 rushes that year - that includes sacks as rushes) then he didn't really "run the spread" in any meaningful way.

rrod has not said he won't pay the buyout- his agent has suggested that it might not be owed since wvu had not lived up to its side of the agreement. if wvu didn't hold up their end then rrod shouldn't be hled accountable for his. wvu in their lathered up state decided the best manner for them to get what they believe they deserve is to file a law suit and make a definition determination of what will be owed. in the end, it's really no different than what would have happened anyway - it's just out in the open and a little uglier. remember bielien didn't pay his whole amount and that is not causing any rage.
it will all settle out and there is no damage to our reputation. this file thing we'll have to wait and see, but seems very trumped up.

Like the Times Square of Boystown. I'll stop at the Pleasure Chest on my way so I can purchase a giant dildo to beat you with.

Pryor is likely an intelligent young man and when he sits down without all the noise in early February he will make a sound decision for himself....and he will look good in that winged helmet!!!!!

Dex,
That is a great quesiton and I am glad you asked. It has a tobacco-like resemblence that clearly shows that he had salad and 8 beers last night.
I am one of the few that will not be ripping you apart on the boards today. Your humor is refreshing and much needed amongst the Mich Football enthusiasts (whom I also love).

Goblue - what "Pryor x-file" stuff? The only thing anyone has said lately was that he took a giant dump this morning. I'm guessing that's a joke.

Do any of you actually want a kid who is so up in the air? I've bleed maize and blue since i was 8 or 9, since i could actually remember watching games with my dad and uncle(Notre Dame fans, REST IN PEACE).

I believe the only proper use of giant dildos would be to write "Tressel loves penis" on them and bounce them around the crowd on gameday.

He(Pryor) may not be up in the air. He already has an idea where he will go...especially after this weekend.

Ummm, yes. My guess is Terrelle didn't grow up watching UM with his Dad and his Uncle. So, I'll give him a few extra moments to consider what will be one of the most important decisions of his life.

Actually, what Pryor is doing is pretty funny. He's a very self-aware young man who is obviously playing the insane scouting publicity game for laughs.
I would bet he made his decision about where he is going months ago, and is now just out to screw with all the idiots as much as he can. It's one of the things I like about him.

The WV behavior is very typical of the mindset that exists in a lot of areas where people think you're too big for your britches if you actually aspire to do something that involves leaving your hometown or your homestate. They have this sort of reverse elitism where they think anyone who leaves town must have some deep character flaw, such as greed or egomania. The university (and the governor) are simply choosing to exploit this for their own benefit. The consequence is the tarnishing of RR's character. If I was RR, I would pay the buyout and go on an all out PR offensive to redeem his character nationally (at the expense of WV). I would say I didn't go to Michigan for the money, I went for a better life for me and my children. Look at how me and my family have been treated since I left. Was there any reason for me to have wanted to stay in that environment? Legally, I didn't think I was required to pay the buyout, but I've done so anyway so that the attacks on me and my family would end. At the end of the day, all of this isn't about money. If it was, I would have continued to fight the buyout. It's about the better life my family will have in Ann Arbor being a part of the University of Michigan, one of the great educational institutions in the world. It's about the opportunities for me and my children that we will have in Ann Arbor that we would have never had in West Virginia. I know my decision may have upset some people back in West Virgnia, but at the end of the day, what's more important - doing what's best for my family or not hurting the feelings of people who only care about me as long as I'm the football coach of West Virgnia?

GoBlue - If we needed our recruits to all bleed maize and blue prior to signing with Michigan, I don't think we'd have enough recruits to have a football team. Once the recruit is signed, yes, I'd like him to bleed maize and blue. It will come with time if/when Pryor signs.

WRT RR - When he accepted the UM job, didn't he put his resignation at WVU for 1/02/08? Later WVU came back and gave a date that he was effectively not employed by them anymore. All the calls in the article were, IIRC, during the time he had accepted the UM job, but was still at WVU. Maybe one of you with some extra time on your hands could make a timeline of all the random events alleged in this continuing saga.
BTW: In NC, the popular opinion is that RR is fine, but WVU is nuts!

Come on now, didn't someone link to a board post where WVU fans were legitimately clamoring for a movie to be made about the 2007 team because they were so inspirational in the bowl game?
These people are clearly insane. Thinking about them is just wasting valuable seconds we could be discussing TPs movements.
