Gravatar How do I spell Beilein? S-E-T-T-L-I-N-G.

Best of luck, Coach ... I really want you to excel. But I think you're more Ellerbe/Amaker than our coach should be at this point in time.

Gravatar Is Beilein going to have a higher salary than Carr? If so, this is a preposterous signing.

Gravatar Congrats to Michigan. If true, you just got a gem. Believe me as a die hard WVU fan that Beilein is for real. He will do wonders for your program. For the doubters, you're about to be pleasantly surprised. Now, why don't you bring your football team down to Motown for some retribution at the hands of Slaton & White?

Gravatar and by Motown, I mean Morgantown, not that pretender city Detroit.

Gravatar thanks to Brian for keeping his ear to the ground. and to MBDave et al for the quality discussion during this process.

i just can't envy Martin's position here...he gets shit from 1/2 the people for underpaying coaches. then he pays fair market value for their 'go to #1 guy' and gets shit for overspending.

also, Beilein closer to TA & BE? all i can say is wowsaaahhh. no one in the history of coaching has ever had a resume/track record close to the ineptitude of BE. TA came in with a perceived reputation based primarily on forward-projecting speculation. Beilein has a concrete track record of offensive & W-L success with mediocre talent at best.

Gravatar Hey, if we got a tactician, I am a happy camper. Just saying that word -tactician - in conjunction with Michigan basketball is like say the word "unpredictable" in association with Michigan football. For the first time, I have some real excitement about Michigan basketball.

Gravatar Its a facebook group already. It must be true!!! lol

Gravatar GOOD NEW!!! Let the new era begin!

Gravatar Beilein is instantly the best coach Michigan basketball has had in my lifetime. I'm actually not sure how far back you have to go to find a better on the court coach.

Recruiting concerns? None here. Kids will flock to play for a winner in Ann Arbor. They've still got the swoosh and the maize jerseys are still some of the coolest on the planet.

Gravatar Since my memory of Michigan basketball starts with Orr, I'd have to say Beilein is easily the best since then. Imagine watching Michigan on offense without that feeling that the whole strategy is to wait until the shot clock is almost zero and then launching an off balance 3.

Gravatar ah, he better not screw up. i didn't want him coming to a2. there are better candidates that i would rather have then beilien.

Gravatar "How do I spell Beilein? S-E-T-T-L-I-N-G.

Wow. What a retard.

Gravatar Smiley faces and such on Rivals.

Good luck Mr. Beilein.

I hope the fans are a little patient though. Can't expect too much until his third year or so. He will need to build his recruiting network in Detroit and around the Midwest.

I also hope there is a new emphasis to upgrade the facilities. B10 really upgrading the hoops coaching, is good to see. Will be nice to see M back in the tourney doing damage (in a few years).

Gravatar I honestly fail to see the downside here. Given the way this has played out, the rumors, and the small bits of information that came out in the press, Martin knocked this out of the park. I felt relieved after seeing that we had contacted Bennett through back channels, because it was an indication that Martin was doing his homework. My guess is that he attempted to make contact with Calipari and possibly Jay Wright. He didn't hire Ernie Kent or Stan Heath. These are all positives. He kept a tight lid on this thing, and nobody got embarassed with public flirtations or rejections.

We eventually zeroed in on a guy that is one of the best in-game coaches in the country. The biggest if in this whole situation is whether or not he can keep Manny Harris, Alex Legion, and Kelvin Grady in the fold. If he can, and pair those 3 with an improved Jerret Smith (who's really not a bad shooter) and D Sims and Udoh, we're going to score at will next season. And if he wins, the recruits will follow. Our program will instantly become one of the sexiest in the country.

The big and justified question mark is the recruiting. Either way, next season should be fun.

Gravatar Lickliter to Iowa. In case you care.

Gravatar I'll go out on a limb and say that if you think Beilein is even in the same hemisphere as Amaker then you probably don't know much about basketball, or sports for that matter.

If this is true, Michigan just got a top-tier coach and will spend the better part of his tenure in the top 25 and in the tourney most seasons.

Hell yeah. I can finally stop boycotting bball. When do season tickets go on sale??

Gravatar Matt, I was with you until the "score at will" thing. I think even if all stick we will not be deep and may struggle to score for long stretches. I would say 8-8 in big 10 (which probably will be stronger next year) will be an unbelievable coaching job.

But yes, I think the long-term outlook has definitely improved and Martin did a nice job here.

Gravatar For those out there who keep saying that there are better options out there, who are they? And what is your reason for characterizing them as such?

If you are thinking about Calipari, Pitino, etc., you're crazy. Let's accept that Michigan isn't the Michigan of the late 1980s or early 1990s. We weren't going to get someone because "we're Michigan."

If you are thinking the younger mid major guys were better options, remember that they weren't free of question marks either.

Martin did the right thing by paying market value. If Beilein's compensation is better than Carr's, who cares? I'm assuming Lloyd doesn't. And let's not forget that Lloyd is underpaid, in part, because he hasn't asked for more money.

I'm excited about the change and can't wait for next season.

Go Blue!

Gravatar The "score at will" comment was taking into account that Beilein's offense gets wide open shots and easy cuts to the basket. According to all accounts, both Legion and Harris are excellent shooters. Once teams try to rotate to them, Sims and Udoh will be opened up inside. Anyways, it's all a big hypothetical, but I think his system is a great fit for our supposed 2007-08 roster.

I'm also assuming that Coach Beilein is smart enough to make adjustments to his offensive system to suit the players he has/is going to have.

Gravatar WVU people had better watch out. If Lloyd decides to hang it up, Rich Rodriguez will be on Bill Martin's short list guaranteed.

Gravatar Given everything that's come out over the last few days in the coaching carousel, all the extensions the declined offers, the "under the table discussions", I think Michigan did well.

My biggest problem with Beilein was he shouldn't have been the first guy contacted. As the week unfolded it was readily apparent he wasn't. Several candidates came out and said they weren't going anywhere. Big names like Gillispie, Lowery, Bennett, and Calipari all announced they were either staying put or signing new contracts. Lon Kruger publicly said he wasn't going anywhere, and Tubby Smith went to the one place I'd never've guessed.

I'm happy to see that Martin did his homework and signed an excellent coach. I just wanted to make sure he didn't make his decision before viewing all the facts. After the Amaker "gut feeling hiring" I was anxious. This time he did it right and we landed a guy who not only wants to be here, but should be.

Welcome aboard Coach.

Gravatar This is a good hire: Michigan's average B10 record for the next five years should be better than 10-6.

Gravatar Does anyone else think that this bodes really well for Martin in relation to the future football coach search when Lloyd retires? I know that I feel a bit more confident in him now. This whole bball coach search shows that he can take his time, do his homework, and choose the best man available for the job. Good for Martin, good for Beilein, and good for Michigan. GO BLUE!

Gravatar We just landed a fantastic coach. This is the happiest I've been about UM basketball in a LONG time.

Gravatar Great. Now can we get a spring practice post before it's over?

Gravatar My personal hell: Florida v. Ohio State twice in one year. It's either seeing the Dark Side win a national championship or hearing from everyone in Florida that the SEC rules (I live in Florida).

Shoot me. Please.

Gravatar Can we turn Florida over to Cuba...

Gravatar Are you ready for some NIT Titles!!?!

YEAH! Now were in the bigtime!

I think that advancing back to the NIT title game is not within our reach gentlemen!

Prepare for some exciting stuff in the future....from other teams....in the Big Dance...because we will be NIT bound for the next 5 years.....because we settled for an average coach.

But let the good times roll? YAY?

Gravatar Also, if he makes more than Carr I will just avoid all the sarcasm and call this move retarded.

Just a fair warning...

Gravatar Hard not to feel positive about the hire after reading this:

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news...=yhoo& type=lgns

Gravatar I'm delighting in Son of Jorel's pain right now and in the hiring of Beilein. Even though I know a tOSU title makes the BigTen look good, but I ya, it's tOSU. Also, this is the first game where Oden played like he's been hyped too. He's never been OMG SHIRTLESS until this game. And I'm happy it was in a loss.

Gravatar I second Dan's wowsaaaahhh.

Hey, if people prefer a Calipari or a Kruger or a Smith, that's fine; those guys all have top-flight resumes, and UM would have been upgraded on the court with any of them.

However, lumping Beilein in with BE and TA is nothing less than a willful disregard o' facts. Many coaches have said that Beilein is the BEST X's and O's guy in the game. I don't recall that being said about either BE or TA very often.

Gravatar There are plenty of enjoyable things in life, and one of them is the schadenfreude overdose of seeing tOSU lose two national championship games inside of 90 days.

Gravatar You don't "settle" for a coach with a $2.5 million buyout. That buyout is the only reason he's not coaching at NC State or Indiana - both of them wanted him, badly, last year. When three major-programs want you in a span of 12 months, you're probably doing a good job.

Gravatar Isn't LC going to make something like 1.6 mil this year??In any case it will be interesting to see how much he is going to be paid, should be one mil or more!!

Gravatar http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com...ckey/ index.html

Gravatar sorry, but in the above article Brian's nickname for Johnson, JMFJ, is mentioned.

I guess you're a national celebrity now.

Gravatar Be positive for once Michigan basketball fans...we owe it to ourselves

Gravatar I know this is off topic, but it sent a chill up my spine when I layed my eyes upon it.

"...combined with the three early-entry juniors -- Ginn, Gonzalez and Pittman -- the group amassed 666 games played"

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/ne...tory? id=2821548

Looks like a certain trio of tOSU stars sold their souls to the devil for all their success, there must be NCAA rules against this, something about no contact with an agent while in college!!

Gravatar Let it be remembered that Michigan basketball was reborn on this day.

Gravatar Very happy with the news about Sims and Udoh. 50% of my motivation for wanting Grady, Harris and Legion to stay is to further isolate Foster on Jackass Island.

I really think Legion would be absolutely deadly in this offense and I hope Beilein can help him realize this.

Gravatar Does anyone know whether there are any potential WV recruits that Coach B might bring with him to Ann Arbor? It seems like all we are discussing is a potential loss of Grady, Harris and/or Legion.

Gravatar John Flowers (#145 on Rivals 150) would be the primary candidate, but I think that's very doubtful. Not sure what the scholarship availability would be, as it obviously depends on Grady, Harris and Legion.

Patrick Patterson (#15 on Rivals 150)is a fun name to throw around, but chances there are microscopic as Duke, Florida and UK supposedly lead by a wide margin.

Gravatar Don't try to change Beilein's Wiki page. Trolls keep sabotaging it in a state of crass denial.

Gravatar medals....go over to the WVU scout boards and ask them.....based on what i saw there last nigt, they'd REALLY appreciate that.

Gravatar ...welcome aboard Coach B. Although, I would have perferred CL...welcome to Michigan,nonetheless...GO BLUE!

Gravatar I think the 2 biggest questions at this moment are:

What happens to Harris/Legion/(to a lesser extent)Grady?

How long will it take our players to learn an offense?

Gravatar We will blot out the sun with our arrows......

Dam Noah acting all ghetto fabulous. Mother and Father are from Europe and he thinks he's from Compton. Dam BET!!!!

Gravatar Beilein has shown that he can consistently get the most out of his players. The only think he has in common with Amaker is that he came from the Big East. Amaker was an unproven young guy with a high ceiling, Beilein is a proven winner with a high floor.

I expect next year's team to really struggle early on: they're young, and learning an entirely new system to boot. However, I think they'll ambush some people late in the season. Next season, look out.

Gravatar Dear Mr. Beilein,

Welcome to Michigan. I still remain skeptical.

Don't suck.

Hugs and kisses,
the walrus
