They really are trying to make us all quit Michigan football, aren't they?

Gravatar I don't get the last one. Why would ND need Kelly when they already have the nation's foremost offensive genius?

Gravatar The Martin brothers, destroying Michigan athletics one sport at a time!

Gravatar Kirk Freaking Ferentz? Is this just Carr wanting to be nice to a colleague that he likes? Is this Mary Sue wanting to be nice to a former hire? So Kirk Ferentz would just dump 18+ years at an institution and immediately join one of his former hated rivals?

And this when there are young, dynamic coaches all over the country who have their teams in contention for conference titles and more late in the season? Bill Martin has no clue about how angry his fan base can be if this turns out to be anything more than a silly internet tubes rumor.

I'll believe when I see it. I'll puke if I do.

Gravatar I think I'm going to be sick.

Gravatar Remind me again why the opinions of a woman who has never played or coached football in her life, and a man who failed miserably in his only stint at head coach, who has no business holding the OC position, and who is clearly acting out of self-interest in the hopes of not getting canned, should have ANY persuasive value for Martin as he chooses the next HC?

Gravatar Wow. I'm speachless......

Gravatar This is outrageous and disturbing news.

Who is running the show in Ann Arbor and why are they thinking of passing on the chance to massively change and improve this stagnant and fading football program?

Gravatar He's been offered the job? Did he interview? Does a 6-6 season just write a person a ticket to a job that could be the most revered in football? Jesus.

Here's a bit of info nobody has mentioned about Ferentz that seems relevant to me: He sent his daughters to Michigan. I met the one of 'em. Cute enough, but that could have just been the sheen of her dad's 10-win season and 34-9 shellacking of Michigan clouding my perception.

Please no Ferentz.

Gravatar Just say no to Ferentz.

Please, everybody: e-mail and phone Bill Martin.

Gravatar GOD NO, IF GOD IS REAL AND HAS ANY COMPASSION TOWARDS THE HUMAN RACE MINUS OHIO STATE KIRK FERENTZ WILL NOT BE THE NEXT COACH AT MICHIGAN!!!! MY GOD, THIS IS HORRIBLE!

Bryan, youve never steered me wrong, i hope that changes with this.

Gravatar God help us.

I am praying that the AD of GVSU said the nicest things in the world about Kelly. We need him.

Ferentz is like Carr -- he's let the game pass him by and hasn't changed with the times.

Is there any doubt that Coleman is behind this? This is the more disturbing than the Appalachian State loss.

Gravatar I'm pretty sure I just threw up in my mouth. A lot.

Gravatar There's no doubt MSC is absolutely clueless regarding this hire.
So it comes down to MSC + Carr + the zombie-cronies over Martin.
How or who can help Martin and tip the scales?
I refuse to believe if Bill was in control that he could be making these idiotic decisions/offers.

Gravatar I too am in total opposition to Ferentz.

Does it strike anybody else as odd that there's quite a few people posting here at close to 4 in the morning? Maybe we should set up some sort of after hours mgoblog drinking club. We can organize anti-Ferentz marches and worship crudely constructed Brian figurines.

Just kidding.

Gravatar This is really not what I wanted to be reading before I try and go to bed. Nightmares for sure.

Gravatar Jeremy: "after hours mgoblog drinking club"?

In session.

Gravatar I've never been too much of a believer in the power of prayer, but people say it's never too late to start.

Dear God...

Gravatar umm... Yea I'm pretty much speechless as well on this one. Ferentz=bad is all I can say.

Gravatar Let's rationalize here. What major hiring decisions has Martin made during his tenure? Obviously he brought in Beilein. Is there any precedent for the UM president influencing the hiring of a coach?

Gravatar Lloyd Carr is doing due diligence with GVSU's AD? That, on the surface, sounds ridiculous. If Martin has Kelly on his list then he's full of crap...Kelly interviewed for at least 2 jobs while he had games remaining and then bolted with a bowl game waiting...all things Martin believes to be unethical. Add that to absolutely no experience with a major college program and double the crap I'll consider Martin full of.

Gravatar 4am? F that. it's 1am here on the left coast.

Gravatar rumermongering apparently equals rablerousing round these parts. Ferentz will not coach at another big ten school. I don't care how much money they offer the snub to Iowa fans would be insurmountable and furthermore Kirk at michigan would force me to attack mary sue via voodoo fucking magic. yuck.

spelling hard

Gravatar aaaarrrrrrrghghghghgh nooooooooo

Do not want.

Gravatar We should hire Bo Pelini. Then the Ann Arbor News can make the headline "Bo Who?" and all will be right with the world.

Gravatar Sorry deuce. This being ***M***goblog, all temporal references will be to the time in Michigan.

Gravatar worst ever.

Gravatar Maybe offering Ferentz will placate LC and MSC so now Martin can go make the right hire. We tried, he wouldn't come, and now onto hiring Miles, Kelly, or RichRod

Gravatar Will someone(s) please start phoning and e-mailing MSC and Martin Sunday morning and don't let up til they understand what an atrocity this could be?

Gravatar Thank you Bill Martin and Mary Sue Coleman for leading UM down the same road that Nebraska and Notre Dame have gone down..here comes 1-10 against Ohio State..

Gravatar If this happens there should be another press conference next week announcing the firing of Martin and Coleman.

Gravatar Can anyone please provide hope that this is not true?!?

Gravatar Oh god... please let this not be true. I will cry. Really. Ferentz can't even work up a team that has close to a winning record against Iowa State.

This news? Soul crushing. Even if he turns it down (please let him turn it down) it doesn't give me a lot of faith in the athletic department's search.

Gravatar Please let this be a stupid internet rumor. Les Miles makes too much sense. Just hire him as our safety valve so we don't screw this up.

Gravatar Does anyone know how to pronounce Ferentz? Might as well start accepting the horrible truth. I need to know what to yell when I jump out the window...

Gravatar http://www.facebook.com/photo.ph...1708& id=2202705

Burning all my Michigan Paraphernalia if this is true...

Gravatar ferentz would have been a great hire 4 years ago. les miles or bust. and by bust i mean please, please miles. drinking and praying.

Gravatar I particularly enjoy the comments, above, wondering incredulously why Coleman has influence over the hiring of the highest-paid university employee.

Go sharpen your pitchforks, kids. We ain't hiring no dude with dyed hair who dared us to turn him in for stealing and paying recruits.

Incidentally, if the Ferentz thing doesn't happen, when do you suppose Michigan will finish in the Top Ten three years running, again? As you know, the last time was 1990-1992 -- or, 12 years before Iowa did, 2002-2004. I love these Blue RDFs (reality distortion fields).

You don't get it, do you. Our management culture requires a statesman, and it just so happens that everyone connected with Michigan football knows this, too:

On that Homecoming day when they pounded us two feet into the dirt, 34-9, Bo said, "He beat us with his guys, and if he'd a had our guys, he'd have won by 100." THAT is the measure of a coach.

Okay, I hear there's a sale on manure implements at the Tractor Supply, better head out and pick up your forks and a good file to sharpen those tines.

Gravatar Nothing in the Iowa City newspapers today...not that that means anything.

Its too bad that the previous post about Ferentz was removed, I wanted to see again why everyone was so down on him. It appears that he has done well in Iowa City with much less talent then he would have here.

Gravatar Holy cow. Just the thought of this is awful. Is it possible that this rumor was planted by some gleefully sadistic OSU cabal? It's only 1:00 p.m., local time, but I might have to make a run to the liquor cabinet. Or the bathroom.

Gravatar OMG. Can we puh-leeeeeze take Ferentz, finish .500 or below and let every 1-AA pound us like a dog on a leg? That'd be great. C'mon guys, in all seriousness, Ferentz would be PERFECT cuz he can start right away! Wait a minute, know who else can start right away? Every other crappy used up coach who can't make it to a bowl. If that's the criteria, I passed this bum on the way to work the other day; I'm sure HE'S got nothing going on. Give him some of that potted meat & maybe some french fried po-taters and he'd be on it like stink on a monkey.

Wait a minute; ND's looking at Kelly too? Does that Mean Weis might be available???!!!

Gravatar Just to clarify; I don't REALLY think Ferentz is "crappy & used up" but there are plenty of guys who are that are available. That's all.

Gravatar If this is true - and I sincerely hope it doesn't pan out: wow, what a terrible weekend for Les Miles.

At the beginning of the weekend he was in the drivers seat for the MNC, and hopefully then following the call of momma to get his lifelong dream job shortly thereafter.

A few days later - splat, nada, zip. I'm guessing Les not exactly in a Thanksgiving type of mood this weekend, yeesh

Gravatar What's amazing about all this rapturous rage by these dolts is that everyone who's ever coached the game knows that Tressel could not even get an interview, were he to try, to be D-line coach at Iowa. Do you really think Tressel, at YSU, could even have secured an interview? Iowa's been our toughest game, this decade, and they start caucasion walk-ons -- and send them to the NFL where they make Pro Bowl.

Well, I hope we can hire him, just to watch this unpleasant crew spit up their breakfast -- or should I say, the last 12-pack.

Gravatar ugh

Gravatar three conclusions:

1. bill martin was very serious when he talked about hiring someone to represent the U.

2. lloyd has more pull in the search than many of us had anticipated.

3. les isn't going to get the job. if he wasn't choice 1A, then he's not going to be the backup either. see #2 above.

Gravatar All Michigan fans should boycott Michigan football if Ferentz is hired.

Gravatar I am part convinced I should just rock myself to sleep...

2004 was a long time ago, and things haven't gone well at Iowa since then. 2005 was 7-5 I think, then the Drew Tate senior year implosion, then Iowa was 6-6 this year and other than defensively vs IL looked pretty terrible.

If this was 2004 I could buy in. But now? Yuck.

Regardless of outcome, it would be interesting hear what the reaction was among the general michigan faithfull following the last several major coaching changes: Bo, Moeller, Lloyd.

Gravatar @fake bill martin...

Iowa our toughest game this decade?

90's to present, Mich 10, Iowa 3.

Gravatar Ferentz's isn't a home run This Hire needs to be a homerun.

The Comment Bo made about Iowa beating us by 100 if they had Michigan players is laughable and an indictment of Lloyd not a praise of Ferentz's

If Ferentz's is teh hire I'm not paying a dime to watch Michigan again. They've let the Program fall apart by letting Carr stay 5 years to long. This would set it back even further.

This is a pussy hire if it happens.

Gravatar Also in that span, Iowa has posted 4 records aabove 8-4. And I think we all agree that 8-4 is a pretty disappointing season. And so he does "kinda OK" with walk ons? What's that say about his recruiting?

Gravatar Read several Hawkeye board postings referencing Nebraska's request to meet with Ferentz's agent for their job - saying this forced UM to accelerate our timetable with KF. What's with dyed hair and paying recruits? That story never made it across the border - details?

Gravatar This is unbelievable and but should not be surpising. Mild mannered LC influences mild mannered BM to offer the job to mild mannered Kirk Ferentz. They want a spokesperson, we want a coach that can win games. Yes, representation of the university is important, but you can represent the university a lot better by winning.

Lloyd Carr might be the perfect spokesman but damaged the program enormously by losing to Appalachian State. He sounded good in the press conference though.

It seems everyone has forgotten that Bo was a fiery coach who may not have been the nicest guy to the press but his teams were ready to play.

This is one of the premier coaching jobs in America, why can't we get a premier coach?

Miles might be too outspoken for mild mannered BM, but he would win with this program and would bring back the passion we have lost under Lloyd. He reminds me a lot of Bo. Why we are not already offering him the job now that LSU lost is beyond me.

Gravatar I actually thought that Bill Martin recognized the need to break Michigan football out of its bubble of arrogant complacency and hire someone who would take the program in a new direction. How foolish of me.

The comparisons to Tressel are off-base. Tressel won 4 NC's at YSU and was regarded as one of the best coaches in 1-AA. He's from Ohio, had strong, well-established recruiting ties to Ohio (which is important for OSU, since Ohio is a talent-rich state from which the overwhelming majority of OSU recruits hail), and appreciated the importance of the UM-OSU rivalry (unlike Cooper, who had no ties to Ohio prior to coming to OSU). I would have no problem if Martin decided to gamble on a young, up-and-coming Tressel-like candidate who wasn't necessarily the biggest name out there (like Brian Kelly, for instance). But Ferentz? This guy has done absolutely nothing recently to deserve the Michigan job. He's underachieved at a Big Ten program of solid pedigree for 3+ years. We can't afford to hire a Ron Zook, especially since we're already in somewhat of a decline.

Gravatar I agree with you guys on this. Ferentz makes no sense. I can see it from a loyalty standpoint, and to that end Michigan should be credited. However, there is such a thing (as the Ferentz hire would display, I think) as "loyalty to a fault."

I don't see "it" with Ferentz. I do think that he would be able to recruit better at Michigan than he has at Iowa. That goes without saying...but I agree I don't see the "body of work" evidence that should raise him to the level of head coach in a premire program like Michigan.

Gravatar I want to wash my eyeballs off after reading that.

Gravatar Brian,
First I bow down to your inside information. Second, what is Bill Martin thinking?

This is a WAY too safe pick. Iowa just lost to Western Michigan!! I guess Les isn't more? It's good they are looking at Brian Kelly.

http://www.bighouseblog.com has a reaction to this news.

Gravatar Somethings to note:

1) Money is now no longer an option. If we would pay the money for Ferentz, we can certainly pay for something.

2) Is this a name thrown out there to keep the attention off Miles? It sounds perfect for that purpose.

3) Might Nebraska's firing of Callahan not make our attempts to woo Miles easier? They'll want to interview Pellini, LSU will need to keep him once Les comes north. Why doesn't LSU accept the fait accompli here --- let Miles go and keep Pellini on?

4) Why would Coleman care about this? Did she have any influence over the Beilein hire?

Gravatar I just realized this is an absolutely brilliant ploy by Bill Martin. Y'see, he realizes that LSU's gack against Arkansas took a lot of the luster off of Mile's resume, as did this comment by McFadden:

"We had been watching film of LSU and saw they had weaknesses against running quarterbacks," McFadden explained. "So it was something we planned on doing all week."

So how does Martin sell the prospect of another coach that can't handle mobile QBs to an already restive fan base? Simple: he constructs a scarily plausible straw man scenario that he knows will terrify us, which in turn will make us teary-eyed with gratitude when the job is finally accepted by Miles.

Metternich and Kissinger and Rove would be proud.

Gravatar Holy Shit, this was not the rumor I have been waiting to hear. I am not sold on Les, but I do know that Firenez would be oh so wrong. Please say it ain't so.....(and please Firenez, if it is true, turn it down and never say a single word about it, I don't want to know that our AD could be that moronic)

Gravatar if its not les miles, then fine... but pretty please not ferentz. cant martin just talk to beilin and go back to WV for another coach?

i used to have a sign on my desk at a previous job that said "intolerable service exists when intolerable service is tolerated..."
replace "intolerable service" with the word "mediocrity" and that's all a ferentz hire would be - an admission that mediocrity is ok.

Gravatar Uh, as your athletic director, I rue the day -- if he doesn't accept the job -- he next shows up with another crop of Sanders, Clarks and Gallerys, and does again what he did to us in '02, what he did to Zook this year.

Recruiting is not coaching, kids.

For insight into Ferentz' state of mind, go here:

http://www.blackheartgoldpants.c...11/25/7421/ 6564

Gravatar @97,

I remember there being an "anybody but Lloyd Carr" sentiment following Moeller's dismissal in '95. Then he has the historical comeback against UVA and beats #2 OSU (ha!) to end the season. Without those wins, I wonder if he would have had the "interim" label removed.

As much as I'd hate to see Ferentz hired, it would be MOTS from the admin.

Gravatar As Don above is saying, hopefully this is all a ploy to get us into line and the fan base more united before the real hire (get Miles advocates saying "yay, Brian Kelly!" and Kelly advocates saying "yay, Les Miles!")

Gravatar can we get some insight as to why Iowa has 'underperformed' the last 3 years? they only recruited 1 top15 class, iirc, and recruiting to iowa is not easy. they simply have ZERO recruiting base. the point is, i'm not sure iowa is head & shoulders above ISU. or even western *if* iowa had some crazy injury-riddled year.

believe me, i'm not crazy about this either...but he's won alot of games at freakin iowa. is it possible to look at this w/ a clean slate & judge his entire record as a coach ans not just the last 3 years?

Gravatar One other thing about the "body of work" that Ferentz has accumulated. His players have not been stellar off the field.

From Iowa blog referenced above:

Citizenship: 42% attrition rate since 2003; 14 arrests of 11 players in last seven months; sexual assault investigation involving three football players

Gravatar the fact that ferentz was offered the job tells us how important "class" is on u-m's decision-making process.

with that being said, i'd bet kelly is no longer a candidate for the job. he didn't handle the exit from cmu very well, according to a friend who plays football there.

Gravatar but, hey, what do i know? take it with a grain of salt.

Gravatar WTF? I wouldn't hire Kirk Ferentz to coach my high school team. What a joke. I guess Bill Martin and LC think this is a big joke. I think LC has more to with this decision than we thought he did. Goddamn LC. He's going to haunt our program for another 10 years.

Gravatar I was at Laguardia airport yesterday and a guy was getting off the Northwest flight from Detroit and talking very loudly on his phone...he said "They called and want me to represent Les...I asked them what does Lloyd think about all of this?" coincidence? Maybe...but I doubt it.
Most people on Iowa blogs aren't buying into the Ferentz rumor. The same guy started the thread on their boards, Michigans, and Michigan States probably to rile up the fans. Either way, if Michigan does really offer the job to Ferentz and he accepts I will be extremely dissapointed. What happened to living up to the "Leaders and Best" standard, or are we just striving for mediocrity lately?

Gravatar Something else to consider. If you wanted to float a rumor for strategic reasons (i.e. to rally the troops behind either Kelly or Miles) wouldn't you reveal information to a blog rather than a newspaper? Talking to a reporter and putting it on record raises the stakes.

Gravatar Kirk Ferentz is more of the same. I understand why Martin, Carr, Coleman, and the blue hairs love him so much--he's safe. He's the sensible sedan that we've had for the last 13 years. We can no longer relegate ourselves to that comfortable sedan--it's broken down two of the last three years. Not since Bo Schembechler and Don Canham were hired have we had people with vision--true vision--in our athletic department. Billy Martin is a glorified bean counter, Lloyd Carr is a great man who is a stubborn as they come, and the alumni--the ones with the cash--think our boys just came home from beating Germany in the war. We might as well clone Henry Tappan Hall, at least he was excited.

Gravatar Ferentz?!?!?! Looks like Michigan is content making us all depressed for another 15 years

Gravatar This would be a tremendously deflating hire. There's finally some excitement about this beyond stale program and they go out and hire milquetoast himself? GodDAMN, if true.

Also, for extra soul crushing factor, hiring Ferentz would likely mean that Mike DeBord, worst coach in the cosmos, would keep his job (possibly not as OC).

There's no upside here. Literally any hire would improve the S&C so it's not as if Ferentz gets any bonus points there.

The most disgusting thing about this would be that Martin and MSC looked at the program and concluded they liked the direction it's headed and wanted to continue down that path. Yes, most embarrassing loss in NCAA history, beating one decent team all season (Illinois) and continuing on as OSU's bitch with a pathetic effort in the finale? Yes, please, more of the same!

...

Gravatar If this comes true, anyone looking for tickets can find mine on StubHub. I can watch mediocre football quite comfortably from home, even when it's televised by the Big Ten Network. It will be so awesome when we compete for the Big Ten Championship once every four years, instead of pretty much every year.

Maybe they're just trying to prove to us that Lloyd wasn't as bad as some thought he was. Sometimes, I think Matt Millen is in charge in Ann Arbor as well.

Gravatar And to tack on to what Chris said, I heard this rumor on Friday, and was told that at least part of the attraction of Ferentz is that he would retain most if not all of the staff. If this is all true, that means more zone run left. More inept offensive line play (seriously, has our line ever been as bad as it was this year, and that was with one of the greatest tackles we've ever had). More utterly disgusting attempts to stop spread offenses.

Then again, if all of this is true, maybe Brian is right and he'll turn it down. Something good has to happen to us this year, right?

Gravatar Sweet.

At this rate we should just quit the Big 10, and start scheduling Harvard, Yale, and Cornell.

After all, Harvard is the "Michigan of the East".

Cornell runs a spread style offense so mark that down as a loss right now.

Gravatar WOW - The terror.

As lifelong Michigan fans suffering through safe 8-4 seasons most years, and losing to teams we shouldn't lose to, this is not what we are looking for.

As a safe, consistant winning program, that takes very few chances, and tries not to lose games, and wants a decent man at the helm, this makes sense.

Ferentz is safe - period.
We get years of the same stuff we have grown used to - yea!

If this comes to fruition, I will be very sad. I will still love Michigan, and hope Kirk proves me wrong, but I will be surprised.

Keep in mind - there really are only a handful of qualified people for this position and Kirz Ferentz happens to be one of those. Michigan cannot afford to take a huge gamble here because of what is at stake. Michigan CANNOT hire a Weis, it would be a bigger disaster here than in South Bend.

Gravatar Sorry for posting this twice...I realized I posted it as anom and didn't mean to...

I was at Laguardia airport yesterday and a guy was getting off the Northwest flight from Detroit and talking very loudly on his phone...he said "They called and want me to represent Les...I asked them what does Lloyd think about all of this?" coincidence? Maybe...but I doubt it.
Most people on Iowa blogs aren't buying into the Ferentz rumor. The same guy started the thread on their boards, Michigans, and Michigan States probably to rile up the fans. Either way, if Michigan does really offer the job to Ferentz and he accepts I will be extremely dissapointed. What happened to living up to the "Leaders and Best" standard, or are we just striving for mediocrity lately?

Gravatar It's almost as if our man Brian told us that we were going to hire Firenze -- the centaur from the Harry Potter books rather than Ferentz. Everyone knows that Hagrid is much more knowledgeable about the nuances of off tackle left.

Gravatar Can someone please post Bill Martin's email address...

Gravatar Why would Notre Dame be looking for a new coach after yesterday's display of coaching genius?

Gravatar Interesting rumor to be sure. Going against it being true is the way Bill Martin conducts business. He is thorough, well measured and methodical. I find it a stretch that he and/or his committee have completed the search process so quickly. This point is rendered mute, however, if MSC is really calling the shots...and I don't think she is.

Going for this rumor is the value Bill puts on head coaching experience and "safe", stable personalities. Ferentz makes some sense in this regard and, overall, it wouldn't surprise if he did end up being offered the job.

Either way, there is no way that this is a rumor leaked with the purpose of shoring up the fan base to support Miles, Kelly or anybody else. Fan base support does not factor heavily into Bill's decision making process.

Gravatar Ferentz is a good coach..there is a ceiling at a place like Iowa, but it is a disapointment that he could not not come close to maintaining the success he had from '02-'04.....thats why Alvarez at Wisco was so amazing; he reached as high as the Badgers could get and pretty much created a system/program that stayed there.....Ferentz still gets an incomplete grade from me for his Iowa
tenure...he has a history of building good college offensive and defensive lines, and I think that is where some of our weaknesses lie.....I would be alright w/ this hire, but with any hire I would also be skeptical as there is no coach out there that really blows my socks off.....real worried if he maintains the same coaching staff particularily Gittleson.....with new S/C and Ferentz, we would go back to having great offensive lines, I am sure of that......but not sure of anything else.......we should slow our roll, though, on the whole Ferentz being offered the job.....do we know the financial paramets.....remember, he is among the highest paid in the game right now.....what if our offer is less than that, will he take a pay cut to come to UM....another thing that does disappoint me if this proves true, is I really want us to scour the country for the right coach.....the job has not been available since 1969, when i was -3 years old......there are excellent coaches out there and such a quick hire makes me wonder if we have done legit due diligence across the board.

We'll wait this news out and see what happens.

Gravatar Bill Martin and Mary Sue Coleman have no idea how ugly this will get if they hire Ferentz, everything that involves Michigan revolves around the football program. Hiring Ferentz will be a disaster as the alumni, fans and students probably revolt unlike anything ever seen before. I'd advise them not to hire this clown if they want to save their program, stadium renovation and integrity.

Gravatar Ferentz is great! He is 3-6 vs Iowa State and lost to WMU. He is pathetic.

Dantonio > Ferentz

Sparty > Michigan in 3 years with Ferentz.

Gravatar marysuec@umich.edu

Gravatar Still rather have him then Miles. Not wild about the idea though.

Gravatar What is Martin's email?

Gravatar hiring a coach should be all about what he's done lately...and that's it.

Also, Michigan should hire the flashiest guy out there.

Kirk Ferentz?

Only worth hiring if he puts some sequins on his parka and does the Robot every time Michigan scores.

Gravatar See, this is why these things are done out of the public eye... because sports fans know nothing of diplomacy and take these things to literally.

Mary Sue Coleman hired Ferentz at Iowa. She knows him well enough to know he's not going anywhere voluntarily. She also knows he's had a rough couple of seasons and Iowa's new administration is starting to feel pressure to do something about it. Floating the Michigan job is no-risk, since he won't take it. But it'll help bouy Ferentz at Iowa and give the AD a reason to keep him. The only way Ferentz takes the job is if Iowa's AD tells him to go, which is unlikely. Also good diplomacy in the Big Ten to send out a signal that we respect the quality of the other coaches and view them as viable candidates.

The news that interests me is Carr is doing the due dilligence on Brian Kelly himself. That sounds more serious to me.

I hope the fans who have worked themselves into a lather over Les Miles will be willing to give someone else a chance if he's not hired. I've never been totally sold on him. I think he'd either be a raging success or a total disaster, and anything in-between is unlikely.

Gravatar Funny how we've gone from being sure that a coach would leave a national title contender to take the job the second it was offered... to praying that a coach would rather stay at lowly Iowa than come to Ann Arbor.

Bill Martin seems intent on doing away with the perception of arrogance at UM. It is OK to be mediocre. You don't have to be the best at everything.

Gravatar Wow. Even Tressel should feel insulted by this news.

I hope Ferentz is reading these posts. And turns it down. The outrage would be overwhelming for any man to deal with.

It would be different if Iowa didn't, well, suck. Freakin' Indiana beat them. Oh, and Western Michigan. And Iowa State. And on what planet does that get you the best job in football!?

Sounds like LLLLoyd is really wanting to put his tired old stamp on the program forever. And the administration is his bitch. Sad.

P.S. KISS THOSE RECRUITS GOODBYE.

Gravatar I'm baffled by all the rabid hatred of Bill Martin. The man could not possibly have handled the Beilein hire any better than he did, and people are ready to throw him off a bridge over something that might happen.

Gravatar Why shouldn't Carr be doing the due diligence? Wasn't one of the things we all could agree on as fans that Carr ran a clean program? Carr isn't hiring the next coach, but he is absolutely the best person on the planet to determine if the next coaching candidate is likely to embarrass Michigan off the field.

I can't think of a better role for Carr to play in the search for the next coach.

Gravatar I don't understand why we would offer a job to someone who we are fairly sure is going to reject it. What is the purpose in that? Even as an overly clever bait and switch ploy, it still is not worth the embarassment.

I don't believe this. It makes no sense to offer someone this quickly without the due diligence all have said is underway. I have to put this one in the bad rumor category, and not because I don't want Ferentz, but because it's simply not logical.

Gravatar Redux, like your point. 90% of what's going in is behind the scenes and we will never know what that is - we only see the 10% above the surface and start over-reacting to a tenth of the real truth. But that's what makes blogs fun, right?

The new admin at Iowa broomed out Steve Alford on the hoops side, and maybe KF is getting the same treatment ala he's MarySue's "boy" and the new folks want their own man.

But my gut tells me this is a straw-man ploy to take the spotlight off of Miles right now so he can get his thoughts together. Jeez, the Freep has about 10 features on Miles this morning. . . .

Gravatar PLEASE put a huge buyout in this guys contract then, so he doesn't jump ship for the NFL.

Gravatar This cannot be true. Just cannot. Don't want Ferentz. Don't want Ferentz. DO NOT WANT FERENTZ!

Gravatar FERENTZ BAD!

Gravatar i think i agree w/ redux & scott. there is no downside here. KF is an iowa guy all the way. he's turned down nfl overtures in the past. let's just relax...this whole process is out of our control. there's no point in getting too worked up.

i just want to know when the viable urban meyer rumors will start.

the hockey team beat minnesota. what a weekened.

Gravatar Apparently Martin wasn't lying when he said he wished he could just clone Lloyd. This is absolutely infuriating news. Run left strategy and blowing fourth quarter leads lives on!

Gravatar Not sure how I feel about the rumor, but let's not condemn KF for running a program without discipline unless we're willing to let go of the notion that Lloyd did as well.

Remember '98? Remember the parade of arrests and assaults that embarrassed the program almost immediately after the MNC? Disciplinary issues and "class" are not mutually exclusive.

Gravatar Just saw KC Lopata on Mich replay. I didn't know he thoundth like thylvethter when he talkth.

Gravatar 61-49, that is his record at Iowa, I was not a Math Major but that is not a .750 winning %.

Gravatar I agree (hope, hope, hope) that it is likely a Big 10 relationship thing to offer him the job.

One thing we know, then, is that $$ is NOT going to be an issue with this hire.

Perhaps, we've made a lowball offer (below his current salary) and he would have to be dying to get out of IA to accept?

Gravatar ...Hail-to-the-naw! KF isn't the answer...now BK will be going in the right direction.

Also would like for Paul Johnson to be given serious consideration for the coaching job. I like him alot!

Gravatar It was hard enough writing off basketball while Amaker was coaching the team, how the hell am I going to manage to write off football once Ferentz turns Michigan into Nebraska?

Gravatar I'm surprised so many of you have questioned why Mary Sue Coleman might have an influence on the coaching search.

Ummmm...maybe because she's the president of the university? I would be more concerned if she DIDN'T have an influence on the coaching search.

Let me preface this by saying that I REALLY don't want Kirk Ferentz. I don't know why Michigan would even consider hiring someone who just went 6-6.

However, the Michigan football coach is the highest paid university employee.

He's also the most visible representative of the university. He gets more TV airtime than anyone at the school (Michigan Replay, press conferences, interviews, etc.).

If you asked my mom who the president of the university is, she wouldn't have a clue.

If you asked my mom who the head football coach was, she could tell you in an instant that it was Lloyd Carr.

A high school wouldn't hire a head football coach without letting the principal have a say. Why would a university be different when it's 1,000 times more important?

Gravatar Ferentz would be an embarassment of biblical proportions, and would cause me to renounce my season tickets.

Gravatar Henri, I don't want Ferentz, either, but I'll take your tickets off your hands...

Gravatar Of course MSC will have a "say" in who M's next coach will be. But her role shouldn't include choosing the coach. She doesn't have the knowledge to do that. MSC's part in this situation ought to be limited to confirming (or denying) the candidate selected by the AD.

Gravatar Magnus:

I think that what we're concerned about is not the presence of input by the Univ President, but the magnitude of that input. "Give my former coach an offer" is a bit excessive -- and it's hard to fathom why Bill Martin would go along with that (assuming that KF is not his preferred candidate).

Gravatar So much for the hiring committee? That's what makes me think that this was done to appease MSC and now they will get on to the real search.

Gravatar I never thought I'd see the day that Michigan football would be as entertaining as Duke or NC. We're screwed if Captain Kirk comes here.

Gravatar As scary as it seems, I'm not worried about Ferentz coming here. All politics. You know MSC has some say, but she's not out making calls & recruiting coaches. Just a friendly gesture. And given the Nebraska situation, they're just covering bases before he's not even an option anymore. (Granted, I wouldn't want him if I were Nebraska either, but you never know)

Gravatar @ truly disquieted

I agree that it would be pure cronyism if Mary Sue Coleman said, "Hire the coach I hired at Iowa."

However, saying that Ferentz has been offered the job (if true) simply because of Coleman is pure conjecture. And her past working relationship with Ferentz shouldn't make her remove herself from the hiring process.

Gravatar An App. State-level pukey feeling all inside. Must stop reading nasty blog rumors.

Gravatar The most troubling part isn't that he was interviewed... or even that he was offered... it's that it happened this soon!! There's no way Martin even phone interviewed Kelly or Miles. I guess he was lying when he said he wanted the "best" coach in the country.

Gravatar "I would have no problem if Martin decided to gamble on a young, up-and-coming Tressel-like candidate who wasn't necessarily the biggest name out there"

I think Chuck Martin out of Grand Valley State fits this description very well.

First of all he is a winner, both on and off the field. He's a man of character who promotes community involvement with his team and also has had great success on the field. His Grand Valley State University football team holds the longest active winning streak in college football and is making a bid for his third NCAA Division 2 national championship as a head coach, and has been the defensive coordinator on two other national championship teams at GVSU (2002 and 2003). His record as a head coach is 48-3. He's a great up and coming young coach (38 years old) who has the potential to coach and win at Michigan for a long time.

What more do you want the guy to prove... 2 straight national titles, probably going to win another one this year... he was a defensive coordinator for two other national title teams at GVSU, since he came in as Defensive coordinator, the records for GVSU football:

(DC) 2000: 7-4 With a team full of sophomores who lost their first three games...
(DC) 2001: 13-1 Trip to the Title Game
(DC) 2002: 14-0 National Title
(DC) 2003: 14-1 National Title (AFTER 25 seniors from the 2002 team graduated)
(HC) 2004: 10-3 Regional Finalists
(HC) 2005: 13-0 National Title
(HC) 2006: 15-0 National Title
(HC) 2007: Sitting at 11-0 and making another National Title run.

let's take a look at GVSU's NC teams... 12.24 points allowed - 2005, 15.54 points allowed - 2006, 13.34 points allowed per game - 2003 (9 points allowed in all 3 rounds of the playoffs), 17.85 Points allowed per game. Solid defense has been the benchmark that brought GVSU their titles. Who led the defense? That's right... Martin in 2002, and 2003, then he was the Head Coach for the 2005 and 2006 national title teams... in his 4th year coaching, he's on his way to another National Championship (3 in 4 years). This kind of coach is a great prospect ans i think he'd be GREAT for Michigan Football.

Gravatar WTF with the friendly gesture? This is not a social club or a fraternity. This is Michigan choosing a coach - I could give a flying fuck (forgive the French) whether Ferentz needs a little love or a colonoscopy. Screw him. If we have a president and AD throwing out a sure-to-be-rejected offer to an old friend at another university just to prop his ass up, that is...I don't know...malpractice.

Gravatar It seems like Martin is basing his decision more on class than what a coach can do overall.
When has it become more important to Michigan to win a press conference than a football game?
I for one am all for a coach with some spunk and fire. I would love to have a coach say F-ing OSU in a presser or something to that effect. I'm not looking for a blabbering idiot like Mark Dantonio who resorted to name calling with a 21 y/o college student, but it would be nice if for once someone would have some fire for Michigan football. Aside from the losses, I'm sick of "well we tried our hardest but it just wasn't there, this will help us to prepare for next week" only to get to next week and still lose. Oh, but we handled ourselves very well in the press conference. Who cares!!!
Ferentz being our head coach just isn't going to cut it. Yeah it ultimately is up to Martin, however, most fans Alums students etc want a change to Michigan football. I think that should speak volumes in Martins ears, realistically though, I know that our opinion doesn't much matter.

Gravatar HonoluluBlue, that info is sure tempting. Never heard of the guy. But I can't see Martin taking that kind of risk. If there's any truth in Ferentz being a candidate, it means he values the safe choice over the bold choice and hiring a GVSU coach would be beyond bold.

Gravatar And Honolulu, I am guessing those four years as DC was under Kelly?

Gravatar I've done my part in promoting Chuck Martin, i sent an e-mail to Bill Martin expressing my opinion on the guy, and I'm promoting him whenever i get the chance. Check the guy's bio out on www.gvsulakers.com He was Brian Kelly's DC for his NC teams at GVSU, and he's done an exceptional job as the head coach there as well.

Gravatar I don't really believe that Martin is so devious or Machiavellian to engage in a straw man ploy, it was just attempt to defuse a moment's worth of panic.

I may be in a small minority, but I think Martin's actually a pretty smart guy, and I can't believe he would think that a coach with a 61-49 career record would be a viable candidate here, especially when you consider that KF is 3-7 against Iowa State. That's not like going 3-7 against USC or Florida. This is either an outright internet tubes rumor, or something that was just done as a favor to MSC who's concerned about her hire at Iowa. Ferentz is not a terrible coach; it wasn't too many years ago that plenty of people thought he was the best coach in the B10. But we have to do better. Now if we wanted to hire him as OL coach...

As far as Lloyd contacting GV personally, that strikes me as a bit implausible. This is something that is typically done by some low-profile administrator, not the most visible man in the entire university. Plus, Lloyd is still the football coach, and I would think he'd be plenty busy preparing the team for the bowl game, regardless of opponent.

Finally, I'm all in favor of the
after-hours mgoblog drinking club. It might come in very therapeutic over the next year.

Gravatar Again, what is the deal with favors? Does anyone here think it is a good practice that the president of U of M is using the most prominent football vacancy in years to prop a friend? This says to me it's not true. If it's true, MSC and BM should be ashamed.

Gravatar Don,

I like Grand Marnier, on the rocks.

If you pour it, they will come...

Gravatar Meechigan Dan:

I like to call it rationalization. When something this crazy comes to light, we have to find ways to make it seem reasonable. In my mind, as UNreasonable as "doing a favor" is - it is much easier to swallow that the prospect of Ferentz really being our next coach.

Gravatar Martin's email is wcmartin@umich.edu.

Now whatever you guys do, don't flood his inbox with emails. He probably wouldn't appreciate that very much. ;-)

Gravatar And as for the mgoblog late night drinking club, I'll take a Knob Creek neat.

Gravatar wcmartin@umich.edu

Gravatar Could the explanation for Iowa's lately lagging offense be attributed to the departure of Joe Philbin to the Packers?

Could it be that HE is the (former) Iowa coach we should be pursuing?

Gravatar let the e-mail firestorm begin. my first has been sent.

Gravatar i hate you guys, but if you hire ferentz i'm going to hold a candlelight vigil for the michigan football program.

i want you guys to be 11-0 when we beat you, not 6-4.

also, i've got another question: would any of you want les miles to be your head coach if he wasn't a michigan man? based solely on his credentials, would he really be the guy you want? because i'm watching this guy coach week in and week out and he's basically an idiot with flashes of brilliance.

honestly, brian kelly seems to be the best guy for this job

Gravatar Idiots on FOX are arguing that LSU is a better job than Mich and Miles would be better to stay home.

Kiss that SEC ass, boys.

Gravatar Yes Honolulu Blue!!

I am a big fan of the idea of Chuck Martin as next head coach of Michigan, and I am really glad that someone else has taken note of him as a winner! I hadn't though about his community involvement, but now that I think about it I do remember an article that I came across when I was looking for info on him. He could be the next "Bo Who?" but this time only better. Honolulu Blue, thank you for emailing Bill Martin about this amazing prospect.

Brian, is it possible that Michigan's AD contacted GVSU's AD about Chuck Martin in addition to Brian Kelly?

Gravatar @ Magnus,

"However, saying that Ferentz has been offered the job (if true) simply because of Coleman is pure conjecture"

If this offer took place it obviously stinks of cronyism. 6-6 to Michigan head coach? This is not 4 years ago when Ferentz was a rising star. I am not saying previous relationships should be discounted during a hiring process, as what better way than to actually know someone and their performance than to actually have worked with them before.....But if indeed this rumor is true, BIG IF, then there is no way to justify this offer other than do to social ties. It would be 100% due to Sue Coleman.

Gravatar AND NO LES MILES!!! A friend told me that he is a true Michigan Man: he blows important games.

Think about it: his team went from being without-a-question #1 in the country to scraping by in games it should have won by more.

Honolulu Blue and I believe this: hire a "nobody" like Chuck Martin who has demonstrated the ability to win big and consistently, and we could have our own Jim Tressel. It's a gamble, but it might just be worth it. He seems like a defensive genius, and he's young!

Gravatar "honestly, brian kelly seems to be the best guy for this job"

For the Record... Kelly before Martin:
1991: 9-3
1992: 8-3
1993: 6-3-2
1994: 8-4 Conference Title first round playoff loss (sound familiar?)
1995: 8-3
1996: 8-3
1997: 9-2 Conference title, first round playoff loss (sound familiar?)
1998: 9-2 Conference title, first round playoff loss (sound familiar?)
1999: 5-5 To be fair, the team was mostly freshmen

Also AFTER GVSU without Martin on his staff
CMU
2004: 4-7
2005: 6-5 (5-3 in the MAC)
2006: 10-4 (MAC Championship and a win over MIDDLE TENNESSEE in the Motor City Bowl)

...not all that impressive.

WITH MARTIN AS DC

(DC) 2000: 7-4 With a team full of sophomores who lost their first three games...
(DC) 2001: 13-1 Trip to the Title Game
(DC) 2002: 14-0 National Title
(DC) 2003: 14-1 National Title (AFTER 25 seniors from the 2002 team graduated)
(HC) 2004: 10-3 Regional Finalists
(HC) 2005: 13-0 National Title
(HC) 2006: 15-0 National Title
(HC) 2007: Sitting at 10-0 and making another National Title run.

Speaks volumes to me regarding Martin's Defensive mind, and he's proven that he can take over the reins of an already successful program and guide it successfully.

Gravatar any more arguments for Kelly? The only way I'd want Kelly is if he could somehow get Martin to coach under him as the DC again.

Gravatar I'll take Absinthe.

Gravatar Yeah we should get Kelly, the coach that MSU didn't hire. He has to be great.

Gravatar Rumors like this make baby jesus cry.

Gravatar Dang, this sure livened up my Sunday! With all respect, though, I'm having a hard time buying it because it's just too soon. Martin is on record as saying he'd work through a screening committee, which he hasn't even named yet. I don't think he or anybody else in A2 wants to look like they rushed this, especially after being accused of pushing the Big House renovation through and then having the access issue blow up in their faces. Frankly, I hope it's not true because Ferentz can't be the best choice after the way Iowa has struggled lately.

Gravatar Yes, it's true. I've been offered the job. As well, I think the ND information is interesting. Sounds like Charlie will get one more year.

Gravatar So, Kirk,

Your place or mine tonight?

Gravatar Hey guys can i come this time?

Gravatar Ugh. Bill, you're such a stain. Fine. But you stay in the corner.

Gravatar Martin's record sounds alot like Tressel, honestly.

Gravatar Are we really debating which former Grand Valley coach would be a better hire for Michigan? Seriously?

It's the David Kircus/Jerry Rice comparisons all over again.

Gravatar I'm scared

Is all the Lloyd was a great guy shit over yet?

Fuck You Lloyd, you are an arrogant dick

Gravatar After reading all of the comments, I have to say...
Why would Bill Martin blow smoke up Ferentz ass if he really didn't want him to be the new coach? With a serious opening like this, you can't really offer the position to someone for shits and giggles. You would be screwing yourself over on the chance that they could want to take you up on your offer. I doubt Martin offered Ferentz the job just to entertain the fact that he is a respected Big 10 coach knowing he wouldn't consider it and take it.
Lets just hope Ferentz really is as loyal to Iowa as he says if this all turns out to be true...
Martin, it's time to bring Les home!!

Gravatar Brian @MGoBlog -

What's the timeline on all of this? Is the search "on hold" until Ferentz responds? Does he have a window in which to make a decision?

No Ferentz, No Ferentz, No Ferentz.

*crossing my fingers*

Gravatar How can they offer Ferentz the job on less than 7 days since the press conference? Couldn't have done much interviewing? I don't buy any of the Ferentz stuff at all.

Gravatar The more you noodle this, the more ridiculous it is. I am with jlvb: the is much ado about nothing. My guess is that Ferentz has been contacted as a candidate to interview, that's all. Does anyone else (Brian, you included) think that the whole formal search process would be chucked aside for some crony feel-good bizarro-world thing?

Gravatar http://www.blackheartgoldpants.c...11/25/7421/ 6564

Gravatar Do not want. DO...NOT...WANT!

I started my morning with Drew Sharp's asinine column about UM not being a top 10 program anymore. Apparently Alabama is much better off than we are, so is Notre Dame. Then I read this horrible rumor that may wreck my day. I hated MSC while I was a student there, and she's doing nothing to prove she should keep her job as UM's president.

Gravatar Iowa radio stations are confirming that Ferentz was offered the job.

Gravatar And I thought Les Miles was bad enough....

Gravatar If this goes thru it could indeed be the death knell for UM football. The Iowa discipline problems alone should make this an impossibility. WTF...

Gravatar Damnit, NO KIRK FERENTZ! and if that's the damned best that the AD can come up with then he needs to be tarred, feathered and ran out of town literally while being repeatedly stabbed in his ass with a pitchfork

Gravatar this merits of a coach should be based on one question (to make this unrealisticly simple): is his success based on having great talent? the answer in Beiline's case was clearly no.

Miles: OSU, no...LSU yea
Kelley: No, unless GVSU was just more talented than most all DII teams
Martin: see kelley
Schiano: no
RichRod: yea (slayton & white)
Pederson (Boise i think)...probly not? Ian J. is good, but are they THAT much better along the line, and at QB?
Tedford: ??
Urban: not till UF
Weis: ummm, lemmethinkyea.
Tressel: no

now my question is: why is schiano not being talked about?

Gravatar I think Ferentz is probably a better coach than Les Miles. Anyone else agree?

Gravatar In what ways is he better, he has blown games by being passive. Yes Miles seems rash and stupid, but fuck man, he goes down swinging.

Plus Miles has shown the willingness to get good coordinators, Ferentz..not so much. Plus the past three years have been bad and there is no two ways about it, so why the fuck should we be paying 3 mil to get a guy who is not top tier??

Gravatar Ferentz is good at coaching offensive and defensive lines. That's about it.

Gravatar There is nothing to suggest that Ferentz is the best hire, other than his ethics. Again, my question is, are we okay with paying someone 3 mil just for his ethics alone, while his on field performance has been really questionable at best this past three years!

Gravatar Meeechigan Dan-

"The more you noodle this, the more ridiculous it is."

Agreed - what happened to the 30 some candidates and due process Martin talked about...? I hope it is a only a misunderstanding/farce invented by someone to torture us all.

Then again....

"Does anyone else think that the whole formal search process would (edit: COULD) be chucked aside for some crony feel-good bizarro-world thing?"

After MDB, our S&C and our OL coaching can you really doubt it could happen..? Why expect anything different?

Gravatar DO

NOT

WANT.

Gravatar As MArtin rightly told the media the other day, just go hire a high school history teacher as the head coach, and we need only to pay his a couple 100s, not three fucking million.

This is just Carr playing his hand in the process, he is no BO, should not be given the same privileges!!

Gravatar agree, for 3 mill we can do better than Ferentz. MUCH BETTER. We could probably pay Brian Kelly 1.5 and get better results. We could probably get Les Miles for 2 Mil. For 3 mill, you get a top-notch coach. Not one that has not done well his last 3 seasons.

Gravatar The rumors about Ferentz going to U-M were rife on the radio here in Iowa, but I'll be pissed. He's a good guy and all that, but he ain't Michigan caliber.

I don't see anything in the Des Moines Register, but we'll see.

Hell, I'd rather have the coach of Northern Iowa (who beat Iowa State who beat Iowa) than Ferentz. Undefeated UNI beat New Hampshire in the first round of the D I-AA playoffs. Also, my fiancee's alma mater, Central College of Pella, Iowa, whooped St. John's in the first round of D-III football...word.

Gravatar Quoting Brian himself... "[Ferentz is]3-6 against Iowa State. That's like being 3-6 against Michigan State... if Michigan State was Baylor." Bill Martin isn't this big of an idiot, is he? I really hope not. I don't care how much MSC likes Ferentz. This is MICHIGAN. We have to get the best. Ferentz is NOT THE BEST. Hiring Ferentz would be BAD NO WRONG!!!

Gravatar They were comfortable watching Amaker and his ethics keep the basketball program buried.

I'm sick about this. If Ferentz accepts, I hope it eventually costs Martin and Coleman their jobs. This needs to be an upgrade, and Ferentz does not represent the upgrade that Miles, Kelly, or some of the other names tossed around would be.

To me Ferentz ranks above DeBord in the list of names that have been mentioned as possible replacements.

Gravatar - WVU #1 in USA Today, Mizzou #2 (Ryan Mundy is happy)
- Mizzou #1 in AP, WVU #2.
- OSU #3 both polls.
- Illini #15, Wisc #19.

Gravatar I would be very happy if this is true.

Gravatar If WVU, and Mizz lose their games next week. How much sense does it make to have OSU play Georgia for the title?? LOL. This is a 2 loss Georgia team that didn't even win their own division to play for the conference championship! wow...changes. We need some changes.

Gravatar This is just too F-ing crazy. I cant believe that this rumor has any truth to it. If Captain Kirk becomes the new HC, M just lost a 40 year loyal fan.

Gravatar I put "stuff from M-Den" on my crhistmas list. I'm gonna be pissed if I get a maize & blue "Captain Kirk" hat.

Gravatar I am a believer in Chuck Martin. It's a gamble, I know, but he might be able to do it.

Honolulu Blue, I too would like to email Bill Martin about Chuck Martin. C. Martin deserves a good, hard look. I know that Bill probably doesn't read the emails, but it's good to at least try. What is his email address?

Gravatar DON'T DO IT, BILL!

I'll transfer. Really.

I feel sick...

Gravatar I like Chuck Martin. Amazing record. Screw Ferentz.

Gravatar It should be that in the days leading up to a game you get excited and expect a win for Michigan. Then if you lose you're disappointed. For the past few years, instead of that I would wonder how we were going to manage to lose the game and would be relieved when we'd win.

Now Lloyd has managed to bring that same dreadful pre-game feeling to the coaching hire. When it started I was excited about the opportunity to hire someone who would breathe new life into the program. Now I'm just wondering how we're going to manage to screw it up.

Gravatar One thought I have had is just this...this is MICHIGAN. This is MICHIGAN. We keep hearing everyone around the program say this, like it's a religion or something. Being a top-notch acedemic institution, they seem to want to have their cake and eat it too. They want the appearance of a top-notch football program, but they don't want to risk bringing someone in who might actually CREATE one because then athletics might officially eclipse academics. So they go for the good man, the one who will maintain the honor of the program, and be "good enough" to get 9-3 and 8-4 seasons, without becoming a "football factory".

The problem with this is that the alumni (and boosters) have been holding on for the last few years waiting for the "change" to come. I for one can't remember the last time I was this excited about U-M football, and that's even after a LOSS to OSU. But after they promised us the "best" man possible and an exhaustive search, to come back with 6-6 Captain Kirk will incense the alumni, and the money will stop coming in. If Kirk ends up being a pleasant surprise, the money *might* start back up again, but perhaps not for years. If Kirk accepts the job, this will be a *HUGE* public relations disaster for U-M, and Bill Martin will have a hell of a time putting lipstick on MSC's pig.

Gravatar wcmartin@umich.edu

Gravatar Dix,

Well said. I know have this sinking feeling in my stomach, the same feeling I would get when U-M was going to play Oregon, USC, or some other team that you just KNEW was going to humiliate U-M.

I respect Lloyd Carr as a person, but I just don't get why we can't have a coach of good character AND someone who will actually bring creative thinking to X's and O's. Why does the moral man have to be the boring man? It doesn't. Which leads me back to my last post. Perhaps Michigan doesn't want the "best" man and never did.

Gravatar Right on Dix, I was incredibly happy to be rid of Carr and held hope that sweeping changes would be made. I knew a few assistants would stick around but not the problem (Debord).

If Ferentz is hired not only will that suck but I imagine the reason he is even offered is this guy is stupid enough to keep all the coaches on staff.

Maybe the OL will be better, hopefully S&C changes for the better, but Carr's handprints is all over this, he's just gutless and won't take credit for it and will hold Martin out to dry when all of this blows up in our face.

Gravatar Wow, this is terrible. I want someone who will inject life and fire back into the rivalry. While I think Les Miles would be outcoached year in, year out by Jim Tressel, he's a fiery competitor and a genuine shitkicker who'd probably shock the Buckeyes once or twice in his HC career.

Ferentz is just lame, being 1-5 in his career against Ohio State and 1-3 against Tressel. Bo Pelini's high on my list of guys who'd make this rivalry competitive again.

Gravatar UM goes 1-3 against current ranked teams, plus App State debacle. Thanks for coming back one more year, Lloyd!

How can anyone possibly think KF is going to improve this level of performance and get us back to Victors-level football??? This KF talk just has to be conjecture at some level. No press conferences have been scheduled, correct?

Rumors & false alarms probably go on regularly for weeks until we have a firm announcement, so fasten your seatbelts fellas. Blog-on. . .

Gravatar This conjures up images of the movie 300 in which the Spartan King (Martin) is confronted by the Persian messenger (UM Fanbase).

Messenger (Fanbase) to King (Martin) upon learning of the rumored Ferentz hire: "This is madness...."

King (Martin) to Messenger (Fanbase)" "This is Sparta (Michigan)!" as he kicks the Fanbase into a bottomless well of continued suckitude.....

Gravatar These comments remind me of the USC message boards upon hearing the news that they'd hired Pete Carroll. The horror!

Gravatar I can't believe no one has brought this up yet...

Regardless of RB losses, I think fan opinion would not have gotten so ugly if Lloyd had gone something like 3-3 vs tressel and not 1-6....

Ferentz record vs Tressel? 2 blowout losses, 1 loss by 9ish, and one big win in 2004. DNP in 2007, 2002, 2001.

How do people think he would hold up?
1- he hasn't had to play OSU every year.
2- Iowa obviously inferior to OSU, but you would think any candidate on his level whom we could seriously consider should have been able to keep all the games at least close (2 blowouts and winning only in 2004 which was a OSU team that went 4-4 in the bigten)

Why hire a guy we can already be pretty sure won't be able to beat Tressel often enough? (as past history had shown, a down season here or there is one thing, continually losing to OSU is another)

If A2 survived the fire and pitchforks immediately after such a hire... I wonder what it would be like after we go 0-3 in the first couple years...

Gravatar Kirk Ferentz is a disgrace!! This guy just got his butt handed to him by Western Michigan at home! If Bill Martin wants another Lloyd Carr clone, this is his guy. A mediocre coach who Tressel will simply kill.

Gravatar oops - poguemahone just did bring his record against Tressel up...

Gravatar I support CFN's idea for a playoff. Its the only sensible thing they have ever come up with.

http://cfn.scout.com/2/690619.html

Gravatar Hmm, the Carroll hire was in 01, i am not so sure internet message boards were that prevalent back then, also this hire is for a coach who has a dismal record the past three years in the same conference, and this also involves 3 mil as salary!!! this does not make great sense, unless you take into account other things at work here like LC and MSC.

SO this hire is not like the Carroll hire, not even close!!!

Now Ferentz may turn out into a super monster as a coach, but ....at this point this doesnot seem like a good way forward!!

Gravatar I just remembered. Bo Pelini played at OSU in the 80's.

You want a dagger in the heart of Buckeye fans, you've got it right there.

Gravatar What does it say when our rivals come up with better coaching possibilities than our AD.

DO

NOT

FUCKING

WANT.

Gravatar I think comparing the fan reaction to this hire vs. the Pete Carroll hire is a real stretch. And it's not a good argument to say "why not take a chance on a guy who's mediocre because it worked once for USC". Besides, Carroll had a pretty impressive NFL resume (not the best, but pretty good) before going to USC. I look at Kirk and I see an apparently "good" man, but not a resume that indicates he should get the job.

Think about it this way. If you were hiring a new employee, would you really pass up good candidates because someone you knew once hired a guy with a lousy resume and it turned out well for him? If this were your company, no way you would make this hire. And that's the point.

Gravatar Eli Manning looks like Ryan Mallett.

Gravatar Ferentz would be an excellent hire. Especially if he brings his strength and conditioning coach. Michigan recruits with Ferentz at the helm and a cutting edge strength and conditioning program? Thumbs up.

Gravatar internet message boards weren't popular back in 2001? that's just a lie.

anyway, ferentz...eh. it's tough to recruit iowa consistently. not my first choice but if we hire him i'm not going to go batshit insane and declare the end of michigan football. face it- this is going to be a zook situation no matter what happens. you whiners will run out of town the next coach in less than 4 seasons.

Gravatar Unfortunately, I think WolvieEric's analysis accurately reflects UM administration thinking..

I will know it if this sordid rumor turns out to be true.

"One thought I have had is just this...this is MICHIGAN. So they go for the good man, the one who will maintain the honor of the program, and be "good enough" to get 9-3 and 8-4 seasons, without becoming a "football factory"." [sic]

Gravatar No matter how you slice it, offering the U-M job to Ferentz does not match up to what Bill Martin promised:

http://www.mlive.com/wolverines/ ...rector_bil.html

1. Longevity - How does a man who is 52 meet the criteria for someone who will be around for at least 10 years?
2. Head coaching experience. Martin said he wanted someone with experience AND credentials that matches the Michigan winning %. Ferentz? 73-69. Nice.
3. An understanding of Michigan's traditions. Being in the Big 10 gives him a little leg up here, but he has no ties to U-M at all. He's not in any way a Michigan Man, which seems to be what Martin is implying here.

And this comment from Carr's retirement press conference:
"Bill wants to hire the finest coach in this country".

Can anyone tell me how Kirk Ferentz is the "finest coach in the country"? If so, why have countless jobs opened in the past 5 years and no one has tried to pry this scalding hot commodity away from Iowa?

Gravatar "internet message boards weren't popular back in 2001? that's just a lie.'

Well, you're just misinformed. I was on the message boards in 2000. Regardless, the point was that most USC fans were livid when Pete Carroll was hired. If you don't believe that, visit any SC board today and ask them how well they received the news.

Gravatar If Martin has ANY common sense and a brain, he will NOT pick Ferentz. I don't know how I could stomach watching that BOZO coach at Michigan. It will be a sad day to be a Wolverine if Ferentz is picked.

Gravatar Reese,

Your point is still not any better receieved. By your logic, why not make an offer to Bill Callahan? After all, if it incenses the alumni, then there is a good chance it will work.

;-)

Gravatar I for one would be very pleased to see someone with some real German blood get a crack at annihilating the lesser football mud races.

Oh, and tell Mary Sue she left her iPod at my place.

Gravatar My favorite is the opinion that we no longer want to win football games because it makes the rest of our school look bad. That is truly a new angle. Maybe we should have the hospital stop doing quality surgeries. It makes our engineering program look bad. Clearly basketball adopted this strategy ahead of its time.

That being said, I don't want Ferentz. His early success did come because of good coaching. His players weren't that good and he was coaching above his talent for a couple of years in a row. However, we can't hire three years ago, and don't need a program builder. My problem was/is with the off the field trouble more recently and his trouble with the recruiting classes "building " off his initial success.

Same thing happened to Tiller at Purdue. He had some success with relative unknowns. He then went out and got top 10ish to 20ish recruits which weren't available before. Even stole a recruit or two from Tennessee. He couldn't handle them and they ran amuck. One literally went around campus punching women in the face. He was kicked out and is now in prison for a similar offense in Chicago. There were more DUI's and suspensions than ever before, which led to a stiffer actions against players. The players in turn stopped buying into his system.

Winning briefly because of the right fit of players is different than having control of a large program with top talent. Ferentz needs to show that he can handle success, top recruits, and not just get the best out of no names.

So in summary - no Ferentz.

Gravatar Ugh! I do not want Ferentz. Kirk, listen up: Stay in Iowa. MICHIGAN FANS DON'T WANT YOU!

Gravatar With MSC and Kirk, we'll be known as the "Hawkerines".

Gravatar I'm voting for you in 08 Adolph, good luck!!

Gravatar Old Fan, thanks to Lloyd Carr I do believe we need a program builder.

Michigan isn't down compared to some but to Michigan fans it's far below expectations.

If they don't need a program builder then they need a major attitude adjustment.

Gravatar TOOL2112,

Because "it's Michigan", I don't think U-M will ever go through a true rebuilding phase. From the comments I hear from recruits, I think over half of them come to U-M just to wear the helmet. The winged helmet is probably the single biggest recruiting tool U-M has. We'd all like to think it is the success of the program, but a lot of kids just want to look cool.

That being said, I don't think recruiting will every really slip. So U-M will always be at least 7-4, especially in the Big Ten.

I agree an attitude adjustment is needed, and if U-M were in the SEC, that "we are Michigan" smugness would be wiped off their face pretty quickly. How about a few 5-6 years? Would you consider getting a great coach then?

Gravatar It makes me sick to my stomach to think of hiring Kirk Ferentz. Why would we even offer the job to a coach that is likely to turn it down? That makes no sense. The coach we offer should want to come here no matter what. This should be a destination, not a "eh, I guess I'll give the Michigan job a shot."

Gravatar FUCK NO !!! SAY IT AIN'T SO BO!!!

Gravatar Guys... while this isn't the best choice guess what????? miles is not either.

it's time to break from the past and move to the future! new blood! that's what we need!

Gravatar Mary Sue...if you want my man then it is going to be a balls-out cat fight you bitch! Be at the Diag at 7 PM. It's go time!

Gravatar The relevant question should be: who is the best coach. Right now we're playing a game of who is the better coach. I kind of doubt Les Miles is the better coach vs. either Ferentz or Kelly.

Gravatar Umm...no, thanks.

Please.

Really.

Gravatar Newman Reality, Miles is about 100 times the better candidate. The man's gone 32-6 in the toughest conference in America. Ferentz is 19-18 the last three years. This year he didn't even have to play UM or OSU and he still couldn't get bowl eligible! Miles, OTOH, is a guy who is winning at a high rate and absolutely loves Michigan - no one wants the job more than he does. He is the man for the job.

Gravatar I will be feasting on the souls of wolverines for decades to come, your coching serch is in the hands of cowards and nitwits.

fear the vest

ps wish us luck in the NCS game b/c Oklhoma is gonna beat mizzou like a drum

keep your stupid sleeves brian I wil; keep my pythons warm with multiple championships!!!!

Gravatar Hat - did you happen to see the Ark-LSU game on Friday. Pure gak job by the LSU coaching staff.

Gravatar If I remember correctly, the sweater vest caused considerable gnashing of teeth in Colombus when it got hired.

Gravatar I am stroking my man-log thinking how swet it will be if you gte either ferentz or miles. I fear noone but RRod, Bkelly, or the Chipper, would at least make me pay attention

Gravatar When Ferentz turns Martin down (why wouldn't he? - he's turned down every job offer in the last 8 years), isn't the next step to attempt to work out a deal with Kelly?

Gravatar Yes I did, the masses wanted mason, now they polish my knob with glee

Gravatar MK,

You might be right. I've had this sinking feeling in my gut after LSU lost to Arkansas that Miles might end up being a big mistake. He's not the best coach out there, and in terms of class, well, did you see his press conference? Maybe I'm being a bit snobby, but an elite institution like Michigan could never tolerate a guy like Miles as a spokesman.

I think if he had no U-M connections (as our friendly Buckeye pointed out earlier) he would NEVER be a candidate for this job. And that says everything.

I'd prefer Kelley, Martin (the GVSU guy), Rodriguez, Meyer, Schiano, and even Ferentz to Miles at this point. I think we built him up in our minds as this "savior" because he is the Anti-Carr in terms of philosophy. But just cuz he is a gambler doesn't mean he is a great coach. It seems to me that LSU's defense has slipped a lot under Miles. I can't say I am that impressed. I'm sure the Vest would outcoach him regularly.

Gravatar Can we not reference the vest anymore? It's getting nasty in here...

Gravatar Hat - did you happen to see the Ark-LSU game on Friday. Pure gak job by the LSU coaching staff.

Oh no, LSU lost TWO games this year! The horror! Michigan never, ever loses two games a year (sarcasm).

I repeat: Miles is 32-6 in the best conference in the country. Put LSU in the Big Ten this year and they'd be 12-0 or 11-1. The SEC is a meat grinder. It's very, very difficult to get out of it with a perfect record.

Gravatar why not it is me that youmust contend with, aiming for someone who can barely beat my former lieutenants or a fossil does you no good. I am the satndard for which your next HC will be measured against

Gravatar Perfect record wasn't mentioned. The issue is: should LSU, with far superior talent and homefield advantage, have beated Arkansas? No excuses please.

Gravatar dont forget Kentucky

Gravatar Hat,
I really want to love Miles and I really want to think he would be great for U-M, but my gut tells me he's not the right fit. Granted, they have done well at LSU, and I am not disagreeing that Miles is coaching in the toughest conference in America, but let's be honest. He has not won anything yet. No championships, no titles (I guess he won the SEC West this year if that counts). Ask the LSU fans if they are satisifed with the outcome this year given their talent.

I'd rather go after a guy like Kelley who has won at every level. And his offense makes me VERY happy. At least the games will be entertaining.

Gravatar It is funny hearing the Ferentz thing, but Les Miles may consider it. But I thought it poignant that Fox bought up Ron "Olde" English - his hat must be pretty high up for that kind of position. My prediction, Miles wil TD the offer, I agree w/ Brian that Ferentz TD's the offer too. This is a year of coach upsets. Carr wasn't fooling anyone - his mind hadn't been on the game in a while, I am glad he leaked his disinterest. We need one of the southern, kraka' ass kraka - smash mouth, Git r' done coaches. I am sick of bureaucrats.

Gravatar Hey Vest, under that sweater do you have little holes cut out in your oxford so you can stroke your nipples as you win? ;-)

Gravatar hat,

LSU--with all that talent--has been scraping by teams that it should be beating by more. Les Miles is barely getting the job done.

You want longevity? Chuck Martin is 38! He could be around for around 25 years. I want someone who could really turn Michigan into a Miami or Nebraska or (fuck) OSU. A team that can win consecutive championships. For some reason, I get the feeling that Chuck Martin is that guy. Looking to a lower division for a winning coach helped OSU a lot. I feel that this is a time for Michigan to take a chance. I know this sounds ridiculous, but one day he possibly could take the world of D I-A by storm.

Gravatar WolvieEric,

He does, but when he wins, he gets cocky. And when he gets cocky, he speaks with an annoying accent and calls them "NEEEEEPLES".

Gravatar Matt,

You just said the magic word... take a risk. Michiganders aren't risk takers - they want sure bets. That's a long way from Henry Ford huh? Well, anyway - we need a gambler with experience, I just don't perhaps think Martin may be it.

Gravatar yes eric I do and in case you haven't been paying attention they get mucho stimlation on third sat of november

hehehehe

Gravatar Hey Vest,
You left your undershirt at my place. And your scissors.

Gravatar Hey vest, You left your "Dil" at my place...

Gravatar Who cares who they hire? All that matters is whether we win or lose when we role into Columbus next year, probably against a #1 OSU team. If we win, it will be hailed as a genius hire. If we lose, it will be the opposite.

As for Ferentz, he seems fine to me. Certainly no worse than Lloyd. Probably a better teacher of football, for that matter.

Gravatar Oopps...old I am getting. Forgot how to spell my name! Love you Vest.

Gravatar Furthermore, this seems like a rumor and not the truth. The only way this could be true is if (a) they absolutely want KF above all else and (b) he has been contacted by others (say Nebraska) for a job. Since both seem unlikely so early in the process, this sounds like BS.

Gravatar Wouldn't we know of a scheduled press conference by now?

Gravatar So, there's all this yak about chuck martin; has there been any hints one way or the other that anyone's been looking at him? Has Bill even mentioned his name in passing?

Gravatar Hey guys, it's me, Kirk! You might wanna start calling me Coach Kirk. But I digress, anyone wanna go to Pizza House and celebrate?

Gravatar Serious,

Well... I can't agree with your rather cavalier attitude about who the coach is... the coach is the head delegator. If they dont' have vision, and fire... the wrong plays get called. The wrong focus gets applied, nah I'll pass on your dismiss of coaching importance. However, I agree with the importance of whoppin' up on OSU.

Gravatar Be Serious,

It's not like KF is the Anti-Christ or anything, but we've been told they were going to get the "best coach in america". Does KF meet those criteria in your mind? He'd be no worse than Carr, probably a little better, but he wouldn't win the big ones and he wouldn't bring any excitment to the games (i.e. innovative offense).

Gravatar If true, this is appalling on a couple of levels. One, the promised national search for the "best" candidate was a lie. I don't expect the Meyer delusions to come true. But based on record, Ferentz is simply a better than average coach. Iowa was stronger under Fry a than under him. I would feel better about choosing Ferentz if the powers that be had taken enough time to at least pretend he had been chosen after at least talking to several quality candidates. Second, if Lloyd is driving the search, does that mean he is dictating which of his failed assistants we keep? I have great respect for Coach Carr, but two more years of Mike DeBord moves us from Georgia/Cal/Virginia Tech respectability to the Nebraska/Notre Dame abyss. I'm hoping to get back to the top in two or three years.

Gravatar The thought of KF is still making me cry a bit.

Gravatar I can't believe it takes less than a week to interview and hire a HC at Michigan. Less than a week at a MAC school? yes. Michigan? No.

Unless each of the 20 names on Bill's list was KF. Ugh.

Gravatar All of you who seem to think Miles is winning with the "great talent" at LSU need to watch their games closer. Flynn is a mediocre QB with a weak arm, and they have a slow caucasian as their starting TB in Jacob Hester. They have 2 star players, DL Glenn Dorsey and WR Early Doucet, neither of whom are 100%. That's it.

The reason Miles winning is because his teams play with fire and a never-surrender attitude. That and their OL is solid (I wish UM's looked like LSU's). Miles is not a good public speaker and comes across as a dullard, but watching this season has me convinced: he's a very good coach. I really hope we get him.

Gravatar I agree with Bill, Debord is/was a disater. However... I think they should strongly think about Ron English. His defensive schemes has upset big teams [OSU included], it is our weak and unstable offense that lost opportunities for us. He has been in the program and has seem the "machine" from a ground zero POV, however - there is .0275% shot Miles may come around. I did find it funny that Cam Cameron shot himself in the foot with Miami... LMAO!

Gravatar Brad,

You miss thow whole point of the importance of coaching, they are winning with the talent they DON'T have. That is what Michigan sorely needs.

Gravatar Only Michigan would make a guy like Ferentz its top choice. Well, maybe PSU, too. This is very, very disappointing to read.

Gravatar That Darn Wolverine, what are you talking about? English's D got ripped by OSU last year. Did you forget the 500 yards and 42 points? As for this year, I don't think you can draw any conclusions given that Tressel completely shut down his offense once he went up 14-3. Todd Boeckman, the Big Ten's leading passer, attempted a whopping 13 passes game - only two in the second half.

Gravatar I agree with the last comment. Ferentz cannot be the only "serious" choice....

Gravatar Ferentz is the coaching version of "Two girls and a cup" with more feces

Gravatar Carc,

Are you watching the games... it's not only about last year. We held them off pretty damn good this year - Wisconsin too.

Gravatar Now Cam Cameron -- wow, would that be a disaster.

Now, the highlight of this post, which we will entitle: "The Many Coaches Theory"

My view of this whole thing: there are actually A LOT of coaches who would do great at Michigan. A LOT. Most don't get the shot at a program with a ton of talent. Thus, they toil away in relative obscurity, occasionally having bad years at their mediocre schools. The only real way to go wrong is to bring in somebody who doesn't know what it takes to coach at the college level (e.g., Weis). Other than that, my guess is that whomever will be fine. Just think: Lloyd, who seems like a decent man but not a great coach, won a national title, five big ten titles, and in general managed the program well. Thus, Lloyd helps to substantiate the Many Coaches Theory. No proof, of course, but there it is. Thoughts?
- BS

Gravatar Anyone think that the bastion of affirmative action will hire a minority coach?

Gravatar That Darn Wolverine, are YOU watching the games? Wisconsin hung 37 points on us without its starting tailback. I have no idea what you're talking about. Again, talking up our D's performance in the OSU debacle is nonsense- Tressel completely shut down his O after he got 14 points.

Gravatar I haven't read through the entire thread, and I'm sure many have already expressed displeasure at offering Ferentz the job, so I'm just one more voice in the crowd.

Ferentz as the next head coach of U-M? Kill me. Just kill me now. C-I-L-L me.

Gravatar Ron English? Please no. Hire a guy who's a proven commodity as a head coach.

Gravatar As per UM's admission process:

Ron English 20
Jim Grobe 0
Brian Kelly 0
Les Miles 0
Greg Schiano 0
Jeff Tedford 0

Gravatar Don't be a Dix?

Michigan is so friggin PC... give me a break. However, living there for 13 years and going to U of M, I;ll tell you this, there is still an ethnic bias thing going on there, which is why I think maybe they haven't got with a black QB yet, and they had guys looking, remember - Jamarcus Russell looked at Michigan. All this to say Michigan is bass-ackwards sometimes. I hope they get it right... they need to follow the blog traffic.

Gravatar Hat,

Most head coaches weren't head coaches before they got the gig... and your big royal point is?

Gravatar Newsflash, Dix -- some of those coaches are the equivalent of legacies, so you are missing points on your scoreboard in your attempt at making a clever dig.

Gravatar I think English may get the nod, he earned. He revived a Michigan defense that wass sorely lagging, and did it quickly.

Gravatar Be Serious, I have to disagree with your theory of Many Coaches. I believe that a program will never stay still, and is either moving forward or sliding backward. Your theory seems to suggest that Many Coaches can serve as "caretakers" to the program, winning even if they're not very smart, innovative, inspirational, etc. I think this is wrong.

I look at how many down years USC had prior to Pete Carroll, how many down years Alabama has experienced post-Bear or post-Stallings, how many down years Penn State has had with their existing legend, and I can only conclude that a coach cannot be a "caretaker"- he can move the program forward or backward.

Lloyd did a good job improving the program for awhile, and then started sliding the program backward in the last few years. He recognized that and stepped down. So, with that in mind, I do NOT want to be casual about the next hire by assuming Many Coaches can succeed.

And I do NOT want Ferentz. Ugh.

Gravatar A great coach will over acheive with his talent. A average coach will meet expectations with his talent. A poor coach will lose games he should win. Ferentz is 3-7 AGAINST IOWA STATE! That right there seals up why he should not even be ALLOWED IN THE STATE OF MICHIGAN!

Gravatar Hey Darn Wolverine,

Michigan actually has quite a history of black quarterbacks: Dennis Franklin (which was historical at the time), Demetrius Brown, Michael Taylor. Nothing in the last 15 years or so. I'd like to see more QBs that can acutally run (white or black, don't care).

Gravatar Just in case people forgot, Dennis Franklin, an African-American started at quarterback and was captain in 1973.

It doesn't prove anything about current bias one way or another, but it's a big part of UM/OSU history, remember.

Gravatar Demi,

I know that... but with all the talent curently out there, we need to look in any direction we can go... coaching or otherwise as long as [withou disgracing the program] we achieve the directives.

Gravatar Sorry, WolvEric

Gravatar What Michigan needs to do is take Michael Vick and cross-breed him with Tim Teebow. Now that would be one dog that can run (rim shot).

Gravatar there is no way that notre dame is looking at Kelly which makes me think that the whole thing is false.

First, Notre Dame needs this recruiting class and those kids are coming to play for Weis.

Second, the contract buyout for Weis is way too expensive, it wont happen.

So I dont give any weight to this rumor circulating around what was reported here.

"new Carr with Les Miles"....

Gravatar Every one is concerned with KF's poor coaching in the last 3 years. But isent any one else but me worried about his poor recurting. I mean Michigan struggels with top 10 classes what would we do with avearge athleates?

Gravatar The only guy worth it was that Philbin guy. Isn't he directing Green Bay's offense now? I'd take him instead of Ferentz.

Gravatar toastyost,

I got the impression from the post that Brian was fairly certain about the KF rumor, but not so certain about the BK rumors. He basically said that the first rumor was pretty close to fact given the source. I wonder if the source was Bill Martin, especially if MSC made him tender the offer. What better way to head the thing off at the pass, especially if he didn't want to do it?

Gravatar Nah... Although I'll throw a monkey wrench in the program - I wouldn't rule out the first name mentioned - Pete Carroll, his buy isn't that huge, and he's had 5 runaway years with USC.

Gravatar Darn Wolverine,

Hadn't thought of that one, but Carroll should be on the list. I thought the "list" had the best coaches in America on it? Shouldn't they at least make a phone call? What about Tressel? Shouldn't he be on the list too?

Gravatar What Michigan needs is a coach with recruiting allure, Zook was it. Carr dinking around lining his pockets at the expense of the program hurt us big time because better coaches got snapped up. What program is just gonna let a winning coach just walk? Heck no... they'll pony up.

Gravatar Most programs would try to keep their coaches, but Michigan is very attractive. Good (soon to be great) facilites, great history to lure recruits, easy (let's face it) conference to run the table (outside of OSU), great job stability. Just look at the quotes from guys around the country gushing about Michigan. Even Urban Meyer. And Meyer did NOT say he would never leave FL for Michigan. Another non-denial denial. Cuz he would love to coach here too. U-M should be able to get a top-5 coach. This is not U-M fans being over zealous. Listen to the other coaches.

Gravatar Wouldn't Meyer be great? but he isn't loyal.

Gravatar darn wolverine,

how is urban meyer not loyal?

Gravatar You may want to check the fort on thewolverine.com. The whole rumor was started by some jack ass at the hawkeyereport.com. By the way, they are laughing their ass off how we bought hook, line, and sinker.

Gravatar Wasn't it him that signed a contract with Alabama, then went somewhere else?

Gravatar True. I don't trust him. He has a slick politician auora about him. And Carr will never forgive the politicking last year. But if not Meyer, why not Rodriguez or Stoops or Carroll etc? Shouldn't they be on your list of the best coaches in America? Does KF even belong on that list? I guess the NFL still covets him, so he must be pretty good, but he's not a top-5 guy to me by a long shot.

Gravatar @Josh,

Unless Brian's sources are playing him, I don't think this can be a complete joke.

Gravatar Eric,

I totally agree. Meyer is a great coach but I wouln't trust him as far as I could throw Michael Moore. Carroll woulnt' be a bad move - his buy out wouldn't be as high either.

Gravatar You guys aren't giving Brian much credit. I think he's proven over the last two years that when he says he has reliable sources on something, he's right. He didn't just pick this rumor up from an Iowa message board.

Gravatar Giving Brian proper credit means we might hear tomorrow that KF is our next head coach. That makes a lot of us furious.

Gravatar Kevin has a point... Listen I am an expeirenced blogger with three blogs of my own, and I'll tell you this - you cannot ensure anything but what comes out of your mouth.

Gravatar So yeah, I heard Carroll was on the list like before Lloyd made his announcement. I kinda hate him, but I'd take him. However, I will say that I think Urban Meyer is an F-ING DICK. After the crap he spewed last year about the big ten & especially Michigan, and then his generally pricky attitude, and the fact that he never misses an opportunity to ice a kicker; something I think is especially DICKish to do in college.

Gravatar I still like Chris Petersen @ Boise State - silky smooth in public, his players play their guts out for him, and he coaches creatively and passionately. Recruits well with multiple NFL draft picks. He comes from the offensive side of the street as a former QB himself as well as OB coach (Pitt), Receivers coach (Oregon) & O coordinator & HC @ Boise. We can keep English to run the D and Jackson can stay as a bridge and maybe Loeffler too.

Brian Kelly's got CMU players with murder raps in Mt Pleasant, he's not gonna get the nod especially if MSU gave him a look and passed - why would we take the guy Sparty passed on last year?

If I was making the choice in a vacuum, Chris Petersen is in my top 3. No murder raps or DUI's or anythying negative in his references. I hope Martin has him on his list.

Gravatar why would we offer ferentz the job unless we knew he'd be very interested?

we wouldn't.

Gravatar I will die if Ferentz is hired.

Gravatar i think this fits into the "lose-lose" category:

option 1: kirk ferentz is our head coach.

option 2: we got rejected by kirk ferentz.

Gravatar re: pete carroll

why in the world would he leave usc to come to michigan? he has a great thing going there right now. the weather is great. he lives in palo alto which is a great city. yes we are michigan, but sometimes it comes down to more than that.

Gravatar Bleu,

Lol... I totally forgot about that crap last year with him mouthing off. Carroll was the first leaked, I hate em' too, but I could live with it. He's a recruiting monster, but his practices have been called into question. I think a shadow of it would leak over to Michigan if in fact he was offered a shot. I know this - we'd be a contender overnight...

Gravatar Name that coach,

Because:

1) His contract is due soon, and the buy out would be livable.

2) He's accomplished all he set out to do with USC

3) there is heat from the NCAA on his recruiting ring there

4) He lost lane Kiffin - a major force in their dominant offense.

5) Michigan would pony up bigtime

6) His name would still be in the mind of fresh names in recruiting drives.

7) He beat OSU

need I go on?

Gravatar This is Coleman's doing.

Students, we need to picket outside of Coleman's house.

Like an earlier poster said, this is outrageous and disgusting.

Gravatar stop it with this Pete Carroll crap, no way Martin is going to hire someone in trouble with the NCAA.

Gravatar Gmb,

That wasn't the point Einstien, the point was a) that his name was the first out the gate and b) why it was follow the read man.

Gravatar palo alto, thats were Stanford is?

Gravatar darnwolverine,

How do you know Pete Carroll has done all that he set out to do at USC? Who cares if his contract is up soon? Who cares about the buyout? USC would pay what UM pays and increase it. Yes he would beat OSU...I'm not saying I wouldn't want him, but there is absolutely no way he would leave USC to come to Michigan.

Gravatar I dont even beleive his name was ever on any list before or after Carr retired.

Gravatar Gmb,

Who cares what you don't know? That is not the point, other's do. Carroll's name was mentioned on ESPN before Carr even gave his annoucement.

Gravatar darnwolverine,

i used to work with pete carroll's daughter when i lived in LA. She said she hated Michigan.

Gravatar Namethatcoach,

Carroll is a coach that couldn't make it work in the pro's so he came to college to get paid as close wo what he could in the NFL, the only school dumb and pagan enough to do it was USC after Robinson stepped down. I was offering and educated guess to Carroll's motivations for wanting to... it wasn't fact. But like I said - I'd take him in a minute, the man is pure football.

Gravatar Ferentz is a hack...

Gravatar if he can't win with the insanely great white wide receiver, how do we expect him to win with the great white waterbuffalo quarterbacks?

Gravatar Coach,

What girl wouldn't want to go lay out at the beach? That doesn't mean Pete still wouldnt' do it.

Gravatar Darn Wolverine, anything you say lacks credibility since you thought Meyer once reniged on a contract with Alabama. Wrong wrong wrong.

And while I can't deny it, if Petey does own a home in Palo Alto, that is one hell of a commute! 361 miles.

Despite USC's tradition, the only thing it has going for it over Michigan is closer access to recruits. Yes, LA is more cultural than Ann Arbor, but USC is not. Weather aside, I think 4-5 people would consider Michigan the better overall environment/job. I've lived in both places, and I know if I had a choice of professorship, I'd take Michigan.

That said, coaches have their own agendas. Sometimes it is money, sometimes it is, as was Lloyd's case, the relationships you have with your players.

Gravatar i meant palos verdes not Palo Alto. My bad on that. Palos verdes is a shorter commute.

Gravatar "Darn Wolverine, anything you say lacks credibility since you thought Meyer once reniged on a contract with Alabama. Wrong wrong wrong.
"

Read the thread Einstien, I was hypothecating a memory and said I could be wrong. As for crediblity I am pretty much the only one I know commenting that actually went to Michigan and knew the coaching staff at the time I went So... your rant is hollow.

Gravatar darnwolverine,

why are you so mad?

Gravatar Jonsi,

Relationships dont' win games... winning games wins games. These kids dont need surrogate fathers and mothers, they need dicipline and solid instruction.

Gravatar Coach,

Not mad at all... not angry at all. Just don't loke posers trying to make points that aren't points to be made.

Gravatar darnwolverine,

Making points that are points to be made? you lost me at mak...

Gravatar at anyrate, wasn't trying to be insulting to anyone. My apologies if so.

Gravatar Coach,

Lol, somw comments made about my crediblity was questionsed without having read and understood the wholke related thread. No biggie!

Gravatar For the LAST time, Brian Kelly inheirited the guys who went to jail from MIKE DeBord!!!!! He cleaned up a program that HIT rock bottom!!!!

I also hear good things about Paul Johnson from Navy as a good coach, I wonder if he has any interest?

Gravatar all good.

Gravatar i'm against Miles and Ferentz. I can live with just about anyone else...except Cameron, Harbaugh, Debord, English, etc.

Gravatar Can someone please explain, "Grand Valley's athletic director has been contacted by a Michigan representative doing due diligence on Brian Kelly. That representative? Lloyd Carr. That might explain the prominence in Ferentz in the search." I don't understand where this is going.

Gravatar Coach,

I could live with Miles as he does havea a tradition with Michigan [not that it matters comnpletely] but Ferentz heck no! English I am good with, he'd step up the game is a really positive way. Debord - HELL NO!!!!! he couldnt' call offense if he was on the phone. It's his fault we suck offensively. Harbaugh - eh?

Gravatar That Lloyd said he had no hand in helping pick the next coach. If he's doing due diligence, he's involved.

Gravatar I can't verify that anon.

Gravatar Kirk Ferentz? Seriously? You could do better with 10-20 different guys. I pray to God you hire Kirk Ferentz. Better you than us in two years.

Gravatar The whole problem with the Ferentz thinf possibly being a reality is because of Sue Coleman's involement - she is ex-Iowa [I believe]... this could get ugly.

Gravatar OK, I see now. And Ferentz is another person Lloyd is high on. What confused me is that Kelly seems to be a popular choice (and a departure from "more of the same"), while Ferentz is "lloyd II."

Gravatar @daniel,

Well, our "perfect" blog source was just played. All of the insiders at thewolverine.com have shot this rumor down after talking to sources to Iowa. It sucks we were played by some jackass hawkeye fan, but that is the reality of the hypersensitivity situation we are now in. Just go to www.hawkeyelounge.com and go to the hawkeye lounge, everyone of the hawkeye fans are laughing their ass off how we bought into this garbage.

Gravatar Anon,

Ferentz would be Carr II

Gravatar i don't understand everyone who questions how we picked a coach in just a week? - Bill Martin and Co. have been dealing with this issue since the beginning of the season - early September I think. That is nearly 3 months to scout, discuss etc.

I don't understand how nearly 50% of my passes got swatted at the LOS when I am 6'6''

Gravatar Josh, are you sure that Brian's source is the same guy? That message-board guy posted that Ferentz had accepted the job. Brian did not post that.

Gravatar "Honolulu Blue, I too would like to email Bill Martin about Chuck Martin. C. Martin deserves a good, hard look. I know that Bill probably doesn't read the emails, but it's good to at least try. What is his email address?"

Here it is... jump pn the Chuck Martin bandwagon.

wcmartin@umich.edu

Gravatar Don't sweat it, Navarre. I feel ya'...

Gravatar this i can say with precision
mary sue is behind this decision
if she hires kurt ferentz
i hope that her parents
will visitor her when she's in prison

Gravatar as for the whole "why would we want a guy that Sparty passed on" comment...why would we want a guy Sparty picked up? It's not like they have some sort of legacy of hiring good coaches. I mean, they hired a guy who said "i don't know" when asked if he had control of his team, and a guy who slapped himself in a press conference. Then they hired a guy who mocked a college player's height, after he ran for 115yds on one leg against his team. Yes, take Spartys word for it, we don't want a guy they passed on. Great logic there.

Gravatar jdog....funny stuff as always....but maybe change those pronouns around based on the hissy fits going on within this thread...."her parents" changed to "our parents" & "she's in prison" changed to "we're in prison"

Sorry, the old editor and red pen in me came out......dont listen to me, and keep the limericks coming!!!

Gravatar So even if Mich paid the same as USC, it'd be a pay raise for Carroll cuz it costs an ASSLOAD to live out there. Only problem is, I don't think He's a recruiting monster. I think SOCAL's a recruiting monster. Think about it. Sun, sand, and chicks dude, chicks. Their cheerleaders ALONE are responsible for 30 to 40% of their commits. I guarantee it.

Gravatar @kgh10.....amen sister.....terrible logic.....i was worried they would actually hire him last year....glad they did not.....think about it, they have real good offensive talent up there, and it would be revealing to see what would happen if they had someone with some offensive strategy like Kelley......i laugh when someone mentions MSU passing him up; they dont know what they're talking about.

Gravatar mgobleu - The song girls are not cheerleaders.

Gravatar Potato-potahto.

Gravatar @hat

Yes, I am 100% confident I am correct these are false rumors put on by the same hawkeye fans. Just go to their board at www.hawkeyelounge.com and go to the hawkeye lounge. Right now they are bragging that they got the front of the wolverine.com and a "prominent" blog. I wonder which blog that could be? Even the fox sports source they name in the original report from this source does not exist, Ron Christensen. The source of the rumors even confessed at the Fort on the wolverine.com. It is pretty obvious they are false.

Gravatar I said earlier today that some idiot "iowahawkeyess" was posting the same rumor on all of the message boards (Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State) at first no one was really buying into it, and really not many did except to say that "If this is true this is horrible etc".

Gravatar lol, I just say that b/c I'm friends with enough dancers and pommers to know that they hate that. But no biggie, fellas don't care either way. Skirts, football games = cheerleader.

Gravatar Bleu,

Lol... good point, the human iniquity factor weighs in. I still think Carroll is in play. But Jdog has a point that I agree with - I smell Sue behind the scenes here. Ferentz would spell the mediocritizing of Michigan football. She shouldn't be man sport desicions anyway, this isn't saturday night the bridge club.

Gravatar @00goblue00

That is the same iowa troll I was referring to who started the rumor. I am a member of the Fort at the wolverine.com, where he confessed to starting the rumor. I even traveled to their board, where iowahawkeyess is from, and it was true that the whole board is laughing their ass off right now at us.

Seriously, how true of a rumor can be during Thanksgiving weekend. KF and Martin are family men and would definitely not be this level of business during the holiday weekend. If this started on Monday, then maybe it would be more believable.

Gravatar Ah, I get it.

The guys with the pitchforks and torches think they own the church.

Gravatar Check it out at hawkeyelounge.com

Gravatar Well, kgh10, I guess I knew that, but nevertheless, you've enlightened me. From this day forward, I will forever refer to them as "song girls". Although, I would like to know what designates a "song girl" or a "cheerleader". Maybe you need your own panel on mgoblog. :)

Gravatar Ok, so rather than melting down about this Ferentz stuff....let play a hypothetcial game......KF has a rep as being a good recruiter of Detroit....maybe if he is the next coach, perhaps the next Vernon Ghoulston does not go down to Columbus and kick our ass every fall to remind us for not going after him.

Just a thought!

Although I reiterate what I said hours ago in this same thread....i want a complete national search since its been four decades since this job was last truly open....despite Ass Clown Drew Sharp's assertion in today's rag, Michigan is an amazing job at an amazing school in an amazing town with an amazing fan base*...we would all be surprised at all the excellent coaches out there who would be interested in coming here.....hiring a coach tomorrow and having it be KF would not meet the ideal of a true search.

*Over usage of amazing as I try to wean myself from the Lloyd regime....couldn't bring myself to use tremendous :)

Gravatar I am not convinced. What Brian posted here is NOT the same as what that Iowa troll posted. The troll posted that Ferentz *had accepted the job* and that a press conference was being held tomorrow. That's not what this blog post says.

Gravatar I love the Song Girls..they look great in those, uh, red shoes...truly an epic college football tradition!!

Gravatar Does anyone think some YAK from some douches at an iowa blog is what Brian would call "waiting a couple days for third-party corroboration"? Hmm. I would be more surprised if Ferentz WASN'T offered the job or at least called. Either way, I still wouldn't discount it.

Gravatar Hat,

You continued assertion that is may be true is like the Peterson woman gone missing. If she just walked off as the ex-cop about to be prosecuted had proclaimed, well. She'd have called knowing there would be national attention. Same here, ESPN, and Fox sports would have been all over that. No blog would get it before the MSM had it, that doesn't make sense. Just a thought

Gravatar Josh-

I agree that the timing is off. However, the fact that we are in the market for a new head coach makes the rumor very plausible to UofM fans. Ferentz name had been thrown around long before "iowahawkeyess" came into all of the boards and started the rumor so his comments that we are idiots etc are off.
No one really believed that it was a confirmed deal that he was the new head coach like they are claiming, we all thought he might be in the running for it which makes sense with the MSC tie and all had the basic opinion that he would be horrible for our program. Are we idiots? No...just expressing our opinions on who we think should be the next coach.

Gravatar @hat,

The only difference between what brian posted and the hawkeye troll posted is that brian posted that Ferentz would turn the job down. They both posted that the position was offered. Sounds pretty close to me and judging from the laughter at the hawkeyelounge it looks like brian along with the insiders at thewolverine.com were hooked. There is nothing to be ashamed of. ESPN is hooked on pretty much every rumor involving A Rod.

Gravatar OOgoblue,

Well, if Ferentz surfs the blog outlets... he'd get a good idea that he is not wanted - LOL!

Gravatar I'm not convinced either. Even if one guy posts a made up rumor, Brian clearly has multiple sources.

"but this comes from someone in a position to know, and how."

I would really love to believe this was all some elaborate joke, but for now I'll continue freaking out.

Gravatar Look, I hope you guys are right. I want no part of Ferentz. I'm just saying that what the troll posted and what Funky posted are not exactly the same. I want to hear some kind of confirmation or refutation on this site before I can rest easy.

Gravatar The truth will come out when it comes out.

Ron

Gravatar @Hat & Amy,

Relax, somehow the Michigan job is a dream spot for many a head coach - heck I want to coach Michigan ball, lol! This is a major University with their eyes open, don't be suprised if we see NFL coaches in the fray soon.

Gravatar HAHA, GULLIBLE DOUCHES!!!

Gravatar I agree completely Ferentz is in the running. However, I seriously doubt Martin would contact the man during Thanksgiving. This whole situation has every Michigan fan on edge and we will believe any rumor that floats out their. I am willing to bet a number on here believed the rumor that Miles bought a house in AA.

When ND hired Weis, I was a senior at Purdue. I was following the hire at goldandblack.com, we seriously hate ND. There were hundreds of rumors involving people following flight patterns in and out of south bend, IN. A large population of people were convinced by a plane that landed at south bend from an airfield in Utah. I wonder which coach that could have been referring too at the time.

Right now the only source I will believe is Martin himself.

Gravatar That Darn Wolverine-

Either Ferentz or Martin should come here lol. Like I said earlier though, you would think that fans reactions would speak volumes to Martin but unfortunately I don't believe that to be the case. We mean nothing in the grand scheme of things to his decision and that is irritating considering we pay to come see the games.
Martin is more worried about who wins a damn press conference than who wins a game and that is what worries me about this whole hunt for a new head coach.

Gravatar This is so depressing. We might be hiring Kirk Ferentz wow. This officially sucks. He has been horrible the past 3 seasons and he has shown he can't recruit at all besides that one season where Willingham fell asleep and Illinois didn't have Zook. Ever since then Zook and Weis have been killing Ferentz for Illinois recruits which is where the big time players are that play in the Big Ten. Ferentz has also shown an inability to win with less talent. This is by far one of the worst hires we could make because Deboring and English will probably be kept on board as well. Seriously just hire Miles, Kelly, or Tedford how hard is that I am fine with any of those three?

Gravatar Okay, okay. Lets take a vote. Whoever wants me to coach, say "I".

Gravatar and by ferentz and martin coming here I mean to this blog to read the comments not ferentz coming as the head coach lol.

Gravatar Ya think Bill Martin's talking to Mike Hart? I know he said he wanted to coach at michigan someday...

Gravatar 00goblue,

I couldn't agree more. Martin is politician and bureacrat - which means the actual goal of winning a game we need to win is not part of the game plan, but how we look in the scholastic faculty scuttlebutt - well, there's asomething to talk about... lol!

Gravatar awful. this can not end well.

Carr better be ready to come out of retirement when Ferentz leads this team to it's first 6-6 season since god knows when.

Lloyd >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Ferentz

Gravatar Bleu,

LMAO! shut up - that was funny...

Gravatar We'd go for it on every 4th down. No doubt.

Gravatar *sitting in the corner, knees pulled up, eyes closed, fingers in both ears* NAH NAH NAH NAH NAH I can't HEAR YOU NAH NAH NAH NAH

Gravatar There should be a picket outside of Mary Sue's house, ASAP.

This would be hilarious. Picketing based on an internet rumor with unnamed sources where the blogger admits that they are just rumors, with one bordering on fact. Honestly, this needs to happen to show the world the state of our fanbase. There is no way that there are more passionate fans out there for other schools, and I am sick of hearing that we have wine and cheese fans. Picketing against an internet rumor would be second only to Purdue's riot over the loss in the women's basketball championship.

From Brian, "So take the following FWIW, which is not to say I lack confidence in the voracity of the following... it's just that much of it is, by its very nature, un-confirmable. Thus the "rumormongering" label and not the "actual news" label. End justifications."

Please make a demonstration asap. The world, including me, wants to see it.

Gravatar I am also unsure what to make of this "denial." I feel like Brian would have a better source than some random message board poster.

Gravatar Wow...So, I casually throw out there for the Blue-Gray Sky crowd the question of ND contacting Grand Valley State's AD and they lost their minds (check it out).

Brian, before they ridicule you too much you might want to remind them that YOU broke the Carr story (among others).

Gravatar I will drive out to AA tomorrow for a picket. That would be awesome.

Gravatar I would be worried if MSC and BM are reading the comments on this site...LOL....

Gravatar Thats why I say, if we keep down this road we will no longer be the Leaders and Best. Football is a huge institution at the University, on the same level with academics. To dick around with the head coach and continue to be okay with mediocre season after mediocre season is unacceptable. I'd rather have a coach with a little less "class" if it meant winning big games. I'm not saying I want someone like Mark Dantonio who finds it appropriate to attack a 21 y/o college student, but we need something more than "welllllll we did bad this week but next week we'll be back" only to get to the next week and its the same old shit.

Gravatar Josh-

I wouldn't be. They need to know how the fans feel and how they need to wake up and get with the times. This isn't 1940 this is 2007 going on 2008 lol.

Gravatar Josh,

I hear you, man... I hear you.

Gravatar And Michigan was last in the top ten three years running in ... 1992. (Iowa, 2004.)

For some reason Iowa has 30 guys in the NFL in the last nine years, UM 44. There is, on average, one guy in Iowa offered by Michigan every 10 years. Maybe, perhaps, sort of, Michigan has a slightly better talent pool.

Does this mean anything, or are you too busy with pitchforks and picket signs?

Gravatar Ok, here is something I just read over at the Iowa boards. I hope this dude is just screwing with us.

Funny how everyone seems to have a source all of a sudden.

I have to believe this is all crap, but Brian has never thrown up pure BS rumors without doing some checking.

If this is true and in 24-48 hours the details will be announced, I am going to put the Michigan football program to rest. RIP UM football, you are no longer relevant. I'm going to take some sleeping pills now.

Gravatar Ooops.... forgot the URL... here it is

http://www.hawkeyelounge.com/sho...ead.php? t=17099

Gravatar Checker,

Thanks for breaking that down... for any OSU trolls lurking about.

Gravatar hahaha mgobleu, I'd love to explain, but I doubt anyone cares. I hope you know everything I'm saying regarding the song girls is in jest. I agree with you about the thought that Brian used an iowa blog seems, well, uncharacteristic. I guess we'll find out sooner rather than later.

Gravatar Ferentz has a press conference scheduled for Wednesday.

Since he has more class than you guys understand, he will NOT go into that forum and dissemble. This will be resolved by Wednesday.

Sharpen your tines. Maybe you can top the Gate D crowd at the last Jets game.

Gravatar This is just stupid if this happens. Bottom line is BM does not want to be eclipsed by the football coach. As good as Canham was, Bo was the man with M athletics. I guess the decline of M football will continue. Bill, good luck paying for the big house renovation. BTW, how did they put together a search committee over Thanksgiving week, review candidates and offer Capt Kirk so fast? Ugh! Save us!

Gravatar 1. Are you kidding? Bo wanted Ferentz to succeed LC. So genuflect all you want before Bo, but you're smoking crack if you think he was not on record on that.

2. TDW: Tressel couldn't get an interview with Ferentz. For good reason.

Cheer up.

Gravatar This has all got to be crap. I don't believe any of it. If noone has any proof other than an Iowa blog, I consider it bunk.

Gravatar Checker,

Lol, well... I dont' know what the interview with Tressel would have proved or disproved but this is getting weirder by the hour.

Gravatar 34-9. With walk-ons. Not crap.

Gravatar I'm sure when someone can provide a reputable link which states that Ferentz has a confirmed press conference on Wednesday then more people would be willing to listen.

Gravatar Wednesday pc: UI sports information. Give them a ring.

Gravatar Just a thought -

If this does turn out to be only a rumor started by some hawkeyes -

Then what is funnier - the way everyone here reacted, or the fact that we all (and even a few buckeyes for that matter) think so highly of the coach of their team?

Either way, I still don't doubt something actually happened - even if just a phone call to interview...

Gravatar We think Ferentz is a pretty good guy, for someone who wasn't born here. So we are not at all excited about competing with him standing on the east side of the field.

Kirk Ferentz vs. Ron Zook: 3-0.

Gravatar That's not a link...

Gravatar thank you Wolvie Eric that is exactly what I was thinking. lol.

Gravatar I'll join these guys if this is true...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3...h?v=3AOgN- 4QnZ4

Gravatar Wednesday: I must have made it up then.

O-o-o-o-kay fine!

Gravatar Kirk Ferentz was born in Royal Oak.

Gravatar Was that a question?

Gravatar Fact checker,
You are stating something without offering up any proof. Then when proof is demanded you give a terse "call the UI athletic deparment" response. Then when someone says where is the written proof you get whiny. All people are asking for is something that is written and verifiable from an authoritative source (i.e. The University of Iowa). Is that so hard to understand with all of the rumors going around? If you don't have this evidence than just say so.

Gravatar *sigh* Thanks for destroying the greatest rivalry in sports history. Awesome. I mean, don't get me wrong, I never EVER want you to win at anything ever, but at least make it competitive!

I guess we're just going to have to redirect our hate to Penn State (or perhaps the Illini).

Gravatar Clearly this is a BS rumor. If it were true... ESPN would be reporting it! Duh! (insert/emphasis on sarcasm...)

Gravatar Exactly. Based on the fact that some hawkeye fan just admitted that he made up the rumor, why are we now supposed to believe that there is a Weds presser? When you can give us something solid other than call the IU athletic department then people might listen.

Gravatar WE:

Understand.

There *is* no link. If there *were* a link, I would provide it.

So, I guess, you should disregard what I said and go back to polishing your tines and scripting your pickets. Because I obviously don't know sh*t. Because nothing I have said otherwise is true.

Gravatar I hate to admit it... troll Chris is right, major outlets would have been all over it. Why leak to bloggers - they hate us anyway.

Gravatar Fact Checker-

I guess we will just have to wait until Wednesday then...If you are right then you were right...until then, no one is probably going to believe that it is legitimate...Sorry.

Gravatar That Darn...

You had me at "Troll"
You had me at "Troll"
(tear)

Gravatar With news like that to believe, can you blame anti-evolutionists for holes in the story - LMAO!

Gravatar Cool.

I expect a yea or nay by 5 on Tuesday, personally, but ... there's no link for that, either.

Good for you guys, bad for us, though you disagree. We're going to wind up with a 1AA guy like your Grand Valley Whatever dude. Then, the deluge.

Gravatar Title: Recruiting Theorists

Here's another thought for you all: why are so many convinced that KF is a bad recruiter? After all, he's at IOWA. I guarantee he becomes a much better recruiter at Michigan. So it seems a little silly to compare selling the tradition U of M has to selling year-round corn mazes. True? False? Thoughts?

-BS

Gravatar Again, why is everyone so un-confident in Bill Martin? Yeah, the guy has said he wants a guy who doesn't make an ass of himself in public, but he's not putting money into the program to watch it fall. Winning is money. We'll bring in money anyway, but if we start winning championships, we'll bring in more. I'd bet on it.

Gravatar Just thinking, I doubt Sam McGuffie or Boubacar Cissoko would be real excited about playing for a 6-6, loses to western, type guy.

Gravatar Yeah who wants a I-AA guy. I mean Jim Tressel was I-AA and he is terrible.....

Gravatar Some random ruminations:

1. Ferentz is the most Carr-like candidate of all the names mentioned. Recall that Martin said he'd clone Lloyd if he could upon Carr's retirement. Those of you suggesting the imprimatur of Bo are on the right track, even if he did not explicitly endorse Ferentz (e.g., "what would Bo do?").

2. There is much division within the University regarding the direction of the program. Ferentz's hiring would indicate the traditionalists (and the University president) have the upper hand.

3. Sadly, having to appease the academic powers that be is a liability to this search. (I say "sadly" not because I disagree with U-M's priorities, but because it is a recognition of how much college football has evolved.) Carr did this deftly. Martin may not have complete autonomy to hire a coach.

4. Reading these above posts about USC, and Carroll perhaps being interested in the Michigan job, tells me a lot about how unrealistic our (i.e., Michigan fans) expectations are. But really, so what if Carroll wouldn't take the job, and Ferentz isn't interested? Joe Pa turned the U-M job down in '68. Canham managed to do OK.

5. Michigan would win with Ferentz. Michigan would win with Kelley. Michigan would win with Miles. Michigan does not need a savior. We just need someone who can get the job done. (It's like what Cormac McCarthy said in "All The Pretty Horses" about women.)

Gravatar Hey, Meechigan Man, lose the handle. I am Meeechigan Dan and it's too close! I have priority.

That said, you made sense, so I guess no one would think it was me (particularly not my buddy BRCE).

Again, I don't believe Brian has this one right. I know his track record, but I am doubting his source on this one.

Gravatar Just tell me Gittleson is gone.

Gravatar Pete Carroll is an awful coach, if you can even call him a coach. Unless we recruit USC-level talent(which I really don't see happening), Michigan will look a lot more like the Jets under Carroll than the Trojans under Carroll.

Gravatar Yikes! Tom Beaver over at Scout.com saying Gittleson might stay and Debord be retained if Ferentz accepts the job...are you fucking kidding me? Suicide Alert for all UM fans. Someone with influence, please tell Mary Sue (Iowa fan) Coleman that she should be worried about her job if she allows this to happen. I say FIRE COLEMAN if Ferentz is hired and Gittleson and Deboring (the absolute worst guy from the staff) is retained. Our strength and conditioning is so damn bad...ask all the NFL Wolverines. I'm going to puke...

Gravatar everybody relax and watch this clip:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g...h? v=gAMtCCezpfU

gotta love CFB.

Meeechigan Dan, there are more e's in your handle. It's not even close, stop complaining. (imkidding)

Gravatar Hmmm. I hate to say it, but if they're conservative enough to hire a guy like Ferentz, considering Lloyd restructured his guys' deals to get them paid for 2 years no matter what, I don't think a pack of wild horses can pull them out of AA.

Gravatar Will someone please tell the people on Michigan Rivals that "DougLambert" is in on the joke with "IowaHawkeyes". People are buying into everything he is writing and it has been discussed on hawkeyelounge.com that DougLambert is making crap up about Ferentz sitings in AA etc.
I don't have a membership or else I would have written it by now.

Gravatar Lloyd Carr will do all he can to ruin our program. If we hire Ferentz we are fuked for 5-10 years. Thanks Bill. Thanks Mary Sue. Thanks Llllloyd, you pathetic excuse for a coach.

Michigan football will turn into the Michigan economy. When will someone in the state wake up and realize we are falling behind on all aspects of life?????????

Gravatar Count me in on the pitchfork and torch clan headed to AA if it is indeed Ferentz.

Not even CLOSE to what the program needs.

Gravatar kgh10,

this one still makes me giggle...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r...h? v=rFxwOLbImcU

Gravatar He's ringing the bell alright...

Gravatar Question, why have I seen Brady Quinn in so many commercials? I mean, the guy is not an NFL starter. I can understand Manning, but wtf is up with that? He's passed more in a Browns uniform in the Subway commercial than he has in an actual game.

Gravatar Apparently you have made this thing official. http://pennstate.scout.com/a.z?s...57&p=2& c=705220

Gravatar 5th Gen Iowan,

Ferentz beat Zook while Zook coached Florida, so their all time record is better than 3-0.

Gravatar Maybe the academic side wants Ferentz, and the football side wants Miles/Kelly/Schiano, and this "offer" to Ferentz is just to appease the academic side as Ferentz will decline.

Gravatar I'm worried that of all the candidates, the talk is of Ferentz. Honestly, if he got the job, he'd average almost 9 wins a season, maybe even one undefeated season, accompanied by the seven win or potentially worse years. I think Les would give us instant success, but I am not sold on his long term record. He still has what would've been Saban's seniors. Who should be our next coach is hard to answer, but I wonder why there are few voices out there bringing Jim Harbaugh's name up, regaurdless of the B.S. that is out there. When you think back on his career as a player in both college and pros, has he been anything less than grit. Anyone who is so persuaded, look into his short coaching career. I know he's not popular, but I think is destined for this job.

Gravatar Honestly, this is the only coaching candidate thats been mentioned that I do *not* want. That includes Harbaugh.

I will hoist my Michigan flag upside-down for 'distress'.

Please let this be some cruel, sick joke.

Gravatar update!!!!!
por favor!!!!!

Gravatar 2003

Michigan Fan:
"We need to fire Carr and replace him with somebody like Ferentz, I mean, look what he's doing at Iowa. IOWA!

Iowa Fan: "Ferentz does more with less than anyone in the Big 10. I he were at Michigan, he actually get the talented players up to their potential. Michigan would be amazing under Ferentz, but you can't have him, he's ours. He'd never go to Michigan, why would he leave this place...na,na,na,na,na!

Michigan Fan: We can't hire Ferentz, he sucks. Have you seen Iowa this year? Bill Martin is the antichirst for even mentioning Ferentz, let alone meeting with him and possibly offering him a job. How can that be? YAHHH!

Iowa Fan: If you want him...you can have him.

Gravatar This is like watching a train wreck... As a tOSU fan, I am simply astounded and amazed; there is no joy in this. I hope for the future of the UM football program, the interviews were done as a gesture of gratitude.

"Martin interviewed defensive coordinator Ron English on Monday, and offensive coordinator Mike DeBord was to meet Martin on Tuesday, the assistants told the Detroit Free Press."
