Gravatar Thecond.

Gravatar Nice catch RR!

Gravatar so rumors of us abandoning a defense are unfounded.

Gravatar I thought Beilein discriminated against those with peanut allegies by taking away their scholarships?

Gravatar yeah, but how much would it cost to renovate mgoblog's comment system?

Gravatar Based on Barne's height and weight (6-0, 225-pounds) perhaps he is a candidate to be a safety also?

Gravatar A glimpse of the future Michigan offense?
http://www.hulu.com/watch/6341/t...s-west- virginia

Gravatar @Flood:

Eleventy billion rupies.

Gravatar How much would a brand new arena cost?

I mean, 12 years ago, the Schottenstein in Columbus was built at a cost of 116 million. So, maybe right now, to build the same arena, costs would be around $150 million (3% inflation of goods per year, which may be high).

That being said, SA is a professional palace. For M to build a very good college arena (AA doesn't need a large multi-purpose arena), one could estimate a cost of $100 million? To me, that seems like a much better investment than simply re-vamping a facility that will be inadequate in 10 years. It's not like Crisler has history or sentimental value, really. I just don't see the point of "saving" it at such cost.

Gravatar Where would you put it?

Gravatar I'm sure there's room somewhere. I'm nit sure what the financial aspect of knocking down Crisler would be.

To highlight to facility disparity, St. John's arena is better than Crisler.

Gravatar However, all the other schools in the mix might not end up mattering much, given the fact Morris is high on Michigan and its coach, John Beilein. The two have been in contact with one another for months and a face-to-face meeting looms as a potential deal-breaker. Could a commitment be forthcoming? Stay tuned.

Deal-breaker? Does he mean deal-clincher? Given the tone of the rest of the piece this seems out of place.

Gravatar I'm not sure there's room anywhere on the State or Main corridors, aside from building on either the commuter lot or the Crisler lot, and parking is already in short supply so that would raise a huge hue and cry.

Gravatar Crisler Arena is a shithole, no doubt, but, a practice facility is probably more improtant in terms of recruiting than renovations to the arena.

Gravatar How are supposed to build harmonious relationships with one another if Brian keeps making new posts every 20 minutes?

Gravatar In an effort to increase crowd noise I vote we build a basketball arena suspended above the Michigan Stadium. Add a glass bottom and we could use it for overflow football seating.

Gravatar Yeah, I think he means "deal-maker." Beilein has been getting a lot of good '09 and '10 players on campus lately. They may not commit, but at least he has some positive momentum. Brian's right, Morris would be huge.

Considering the fund raising for $40M (+ another $20M for a practice facility) has been glacial, I don't think $100M+ is happening any time soon. Martin is willing to incur debt to finance it, but not that much. Particularly right on the heels of the stadium renovation, which the department is also financing with debt.

Gravatar So it's a profit deal eh?

Gravatar C'mon, Stephen M. Ross!

Gravatar You can't be serious with this shit, heh? Beilien as the "widely believed to be the best strategic coach in the country." What country are we talking about,
Mexico? Look Beilien couldn't get his troops ready for Harvard let alone any of the Big Ten schools.

Early projections have the Wolverines DEAD LAST in the Big Ten this year. So here we sit two years after
Amaker left without a clue to building a program.

Gravatar MRG,

I'm still skeptical as to whether or not they are willing to incur debt to get the ball rolling on renovations and a practice facility. If they are, than it will be a very small amount, imho. There is still too much apathy towards the basketball program from both the fanbase and the administration. The practice facility is the most important thing as of right now, imho. Its a huge recruiting tool.

Gravatar Nuttin but Net is correct. We should rely on projections of next year's Big 10 season to judge Beilein's coaching acumen rather than his 30 year career.

I know Udoh was the second coming of Greg Oden, but if you think Indiana, Northwestern and PSU are going to be better than U-M next year, you're on crack.

Gravatar Interesting tidbit I posted earlier:
Over the last 6 years Michigan's Final AP ranking has been 18, 8, NR, 14, 6, and 9. Top schools over the last 6 years?
1. USC (avg=2.50!)
2. OSU (avg=6.00)
3. Texas (avg=7.83)
4. Okla/UGa(avg=8.66)
6. LSU (avg=9.0)

7. Auburn (avg=13.33)
8. MICHIGAN (avg=13.50)
9. Miami(Fl) (avg=14.50)
10.VaTech (avg=14.83)
11.WestVa (avg=16.17)
12.Boise St.(avg=16.67)
13. Florida (avg=17.00)

So technically, there's been exactly ONE school who's even averaged a Top 5 ranking over the last half dozen years. And I'm curious if Florida fans bitch about "underachieving" as much as we do?

Gravatar I know that Virginia recently replaced U Hall with John Paul Jones Arena, but that was out on North Grounds, up by married student housing and the law school. The soccer arena is out there, too, so it's not as odd as putting it on North Campus here would be.

Gravatar BUT LLOYD SUCKED WE SHOULD HAVE WON EVERY NATIONAL TITLE SINCE 97

Gravatar @ Jay: Agree about the practice facility. That needs to happen ASAP for a lot of reasons.

Martin has said publicly that he would incur debt to finance the project. He has not said how much, which, as you mention, may be the sticking point. The stadium reno gives him a convenient, and fairly legitimate, excuse to delay basketball improvements. To Beilein's credit, he will shit on Martin's desk if things don't get moving in the next couple years.

Gravatar Dont get all pissy with this question...but,

Why do we not have a practice facility yet for a major sport? I'm looking for the real honest answer.

Gravatar Nuttin But Net might be the correct moniker, because Nuttin But Brains or Nuttin but Common Sense definitely aren't.

Seriously dude, if you're that stupid do you forget to breathe? Just curious.

Gravatar jeremy,
Short answer: the sanctions. M put spending on the BBall program in the freezer after the Fab Five scandal. And back even as recently as the mid-90's a practice facility wasn't considered the OMG! NECESSITY! that it is now.

Gravatar Dont get all pissy with this question...but,

Jeremy | 06.24.08 - 2:01 pm | #

Because we've been trying to forgot the basketball team exists for 10 years now.

Gravatar Uh, it would've been nice to to win at least ONE of our 3 Rose Bowl games.

And beat Ohio State more than once in the last 7 years. Pounding on the underwhelming competition that was our non conference schedule and the afterthoughts that made up much of the Big 11 didn't do much for me.

In short, Lloyd's last few years as head coach were underwhelming in the grand scheme of things.

Gravatar Jay, I think my point was that almost EVERY other schoool has similar laundry list of complaints just like yours.
And Rose Bowls we lost to #1USC, #5Texas, and #2USC.

Gravatar Cols sports radio is reporting Newsome is seriously reconsidering his committment to Michigan - local "expert" says this puts RR back to "square one". Does anyone know anything more concrete? Otherwise, I'll assume more homer buckeye BS...

Gravatar Hot damn, its been like 50 minutes since Brian's last posting. What's the problem?

Gravatar AKA Caron Palmer, Vince Young, and OMG-WRShaveGLUEonTHEIRhandsDONTdropPASSESever

Gravatar I will agree that would really suck...BUT after looking at both him and Tate Forcier play...I'd rather have Forcier. His accuracy is off the charts (75% compl rate) and he's fast, too.

Gravatar Jay - good to see you back, - thoughts on the Tigers (current) turn-around?

Gravatar We played Leinart in the 04 rose bowl Carson Palmer was already on the Bengals at that point in time.

Gravatar Caup,
I get your point. My point is that if we as a fanbase want to consider our football program amongst the elite, then it is unacceptable to lose 6 of 7 to our biggest rival and lose 3 Rose Bowls in 4 years, 2 of which were in embarrasing fashion to USC. Call me crazy, but, I think that's unacceptable given the talent that we have year in and year out.

It would also be nice to actually PLAY in a national title game, considering the BCS has been around for 11 years and we've yet to appear in one.

Gravatar How can Newsome make a split second decision as to whether or not he's throwing a pass to the correct team if he can't decide on a college? I don't want him.

Gravatar Shut the fuck up about Tate Forcier already! Be satisfied with Newsome already, who is a great recruit to begin with. We have Newsome and Beaver. They are both great recruits to have. Deal with it.

Gravatar In the 07 Rose Bowl - I really think we should have won that game, that USC team wasn't that impressive. Michigan until that point in time had been the much more consistent team over the course of the season. John David Booty was nothing special but the M secondary made him look like Tom Brady against the Bills.

I give a pass on the 04 rose bowl (usc NC champs)and the 05 rose bowl (The legend of Vince Young begins)

But I'm with Jay we should have won at least one of those rose bowls. And we should have beat Nebraska in the Alamo bowl - we got out coached by Bill Calahan.

Gravatar Jay, I agree that we should hope for more. Most agree with us, too, and I think that's why the staff got cleaned out. My hope is that instead of being the #8 average program, we're up there at 3 or 4 (and ahead of OSU!).

Two programs with better average rankings than us in the last 6 years have also never been in a BCS title game (Georgia and Auburn).

Gravatar Just read that the coach (Lew Johnston) who is stirring the pot retired after the '06 season. Seems like a bitter ex-coach (and VT fan). Anyone?

Gravatar Tim, my point was that if we lose Newsome becuz Forcier commits then I won't be panicking like you.

Gravatar Too be fair Auburn really could/should have had a BCS championship appearance - IMO they were more deserving than that overrated OK team that USC ran off the field.

Gravatar @Cols -

I heard the same thing seems apparently this former coach wants Newsome to play closer to home - saying something along the lions of it was an honor to play in your home state.

Gravatar Jay, I'm not saying fans should be totally satisfied with the things have gone, but the level of hyperbole and venom spewed against Carr and Co. has been a bit much considering the success we have had. A reasonable middle ground is all I'm looking for - as in, we've been very good and yes there is room for improvement but we're still in the Top 10 of programs over the past decade.

I've been beating the "we're not elite" horse ever since the coaching search here because we are not, but that doesn't mean I don't recognize that things have been pretty good and could have been much worse (Nebraska, Sparty, even Florida St has had a worse decline than us I'd argue).

Gravatar JHS - yes, totally. Yet another BCS Beauty Contest Debacle.

Gravatar JHS,

I'm proud of the way the starting pitching has come around. I'm not convinced, however, that they have turned it around for the long haul. Asking Gallaraga to keep pitching the way he has through the second half of the season is a tall order considering he will be facing teams the second time around.

I have no faith in Bonine having any success against the AL.

I believe the hitting will continue to improve.

The bullpen is still a problem. Somebody please pull a Shane Standt on Fernando Rodney's arm and put us all out of our misery.

Joel Zumaya has his velocity back, but, now has very little movement on his fastball. Should be made into a starter next year?

Chuck Hernandez still sucks.

That is all.

Gravatar The funny thing is an SEC team got left out of the BCS title game - can anyone imagine that happening now?

Shit, Florida got the nod in '06 after having a solid but highly unspectacular year just because no one wanted the M/OSU rematch.

Gravatar And Jay,

There are 119 FBS programs, many of whom have the same expectations. Lloyd underachieved but give it a rest already. We just didn't have the top team during a bunch of his years most notably in 2004-05. I think we did in 2006 and last year we could have had a top team but Lloyd was coaching when he should have already retired. You sound like a spoiled and demanding fan.

Gravatar @ dex: You can add 'Bama, Miami and PSU (ha ha ha) to that list as well.

Gravatar 14.Louisville (avg=18.17)
15.Wisconsin (avg=19.17)
16.Tennessee (avg=19.50)
17.PennState (avg=20.17)
18.FSU/Ala (avg=20.5)

Gravatar How is "we have Newsome, he is great, be happy with it" panicking? According to rumors out there the entire team is leaving for OSU. I simply do not believe the Newsome transferring rumors.

Gravatar Dex,

You might find this surprising, but, I agree with you. I don't believe that we are amongst the elite as of right now, either. Anybody that thinks we should consider ourselves elite are fooling themselves. The potential is and has been there to be an elite top 5 program. That is what has been dissappointing over the last 6 or 7 years.

Gravatar Jesus Christ (literally), how could we forget ND?

Gravatar Tim, fwiw, I don't buy the rumors, either. I was just looking for the silver lining if they are true.

Gravatar ND is perpetually returning to glory - so you can give them a pass.

Gravatar Tim,

Settle down. If the conversation bothers you, don't engage in it. I'm not trying to bash Lloyd. I'm just saying that there is another way of looking at the last 6 or 7 years and that is one of dissappointment rather than accepting of the underachievement of our program within that time frame.

Gravatar Sorry, I did forget ND. They're tied with PennSt with an avg=20.17 ranking over the last 6 years. So FSU and 'Bama round out the Top 20 of the last 6 years.

Gravatar mean, 12 years ago, the Schottenstein in Columbus was built at a cost of 116 million.

Let us never forget that the true name of the arena is Columbus is Value City Arena. No need to hide that beautifully tacky name from the general public.

As for renovating Crisler vs. building a new place, it's a simple matter of costs. It's considerably cheaper to renovate Crisler into tip-top shape than to buy land, pour foundations, etc., and then end up with a new arena. Building a totally new place would involve everything that renovating Crisler would, plus a bunch of other costs. It also, in all likelihood, would have to be further away from campus than Crisler is (and people already bitch about the walk to Crisler in the winter).

Gravatar New post. Somebody check Brian's blood stream for cocaine.

Gravatar I love this revisionist history shit that is already going on with Lloyd. The fuck nearly destroyed UM football, we are years behind OSU, and the last three records were 7-5, 11-2 (OSU AND USC BUTT PUMPED DA BITCH), and 9-4 (APPY STATE BUTT PUMPED DA BITCH)

You guys go on and get wistful over Lloyd Fucking Carr. No matter how much UM fans think they are world class, they just don;t understand that the program is about as fearful as a tough Northwestern team right now, and Lloyd is your guy.

Even George Bush has the 23%.

Gravatar All I know is this: if mgoblog readers accept the underachievement of the football team, the mediocreness of said team will continue to rise exponentially. It is essential that we maintain constant anti-underachievement discipline.

Gravatar Are recruits really "ours" (or anyone's, for that matter until they sign the LOI? The whole verbal commitment thing seems to be more and more meaningless as the years go by. If he keeps his commitment, great. If not, then Tate Forcier will probably come along Shavodrick Beaver. As long as we get 2 of the 3 I'll be satisfied. I'm more concerned with the D line recruiting as of now. At least as much as a person can be "concerned" about recruiting this time of year, anyways.

Gravatar Being in the construction industry for a living, I've seen the inflation rate for steel, concrete, copper, really almost every essential building material, go up double digits in the lst 5 years.
That same $116M arena would probably cost over $200M today.

Gravatar You can thank the voracious building appetite of China for that.

Gravatar What's the over-under on the number of gentlemen who have BUTT PUMPED Mr. Sphincter's mom over the past 20 years or so?

37?

Remember, double penetration counts as 2 BUTT PUMP incidents.

Gravatar Barking Sphincter, you've got to chill. Look, I wanted Lloyd to step down desperately, and I'm glad he did. But we went 20-6 the last two years. That's not quite as good as we'd all like, but a lot of programs would take that. What was Florida's record the two years before Meyer? Worse than that, I think, and yet in his second year they won it all. When you have top-10 talent coming in every year, it's not that hard to turn things around. The first year of a new coach is often rocky, but in year 2 the good ones usually have their program make a big jump.

Gravatar Chil? I know there are guys who just want to look at the final number, and run around wearing nothing but a Michigan football helmet and a pair of boots and scream "We lead the all time series with Ohio State! We are academically superior to them!", but the program is flailing away in the big games (ok, whoopdy doo. We beat Florida Pfleaaahhh).

It's called progressive regression. The team grew steadily worse, and complacent as the years wore on.
And to think, the #1 replacement was Kirk Ferentz.

That tells you all you need to know.

Gravatar the best strategic coach in the country, HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA

Gravatar Look, Beilien couldn't find his ass let alone the develop a Big Ten program. The guy has coached THIRTY YEARS and been to the NCAA tourney four times. Anyone thinking Wolverines will get anywhere with this guy are just plain crazy. My grandmother could field a better team and kick Harvard's ass. Northwestern will make us look like
Forrest Gump's Bubba shrimp.

Gravatar NBN:

But it's Michigan! We're academically superior! The fight song! Kids can look at UM's depth chart and if they have one good leg and at least half an arm, they'll come in and play right away!

I hope I'm wrong, but Belien doesn't even rate a "meh" from even the most vociferous of Michigan fans.

Gravatar TBS, I used to kind of like you, but that whole butt pump thing was fucking mind-blowing retarded.

Gravatar TBS - I'm NOT arguing that Carr was doing a kick-ass job in the last years. I just dispute your claim that we're years behind OSU. This year, I'll grant that it will be extremely tough to beat them. But in 2009 it's a whole new ballgame. The good coaches usually get it done in year 2.
