I wonder if Mallett will consider Henne's success yesterday out of those numerous spread packages if he's seriously thinking about transferring. Maybe he isn't the ideal QB for said system, but I think he can work in it.

Funny story: the first time I ever met Lloyd Carr was in the visitors' locker room after the 1995 Indiana game, down in Bloomington.
I shook his hand and complimented him on a great game (W,34-17).

Thoughts on the game:
- When I turned on the TV and saw it was a cool, cloudy, drizzly Big-10 sort of day, I thought "Game On!!".
- Tim Tebow is a nice QB . . . he's no Chad Henne though. Seriously.
- You could have made some serious cash of off me if you bet me that Lloyd Carr (and Mike DeBord and Ron English) would ever out-coach Demi-God Urban Meyer in a bowl game, especially simultaneously on both Offence and Defense.
- I felt like I was watching someone else's team. I don't think I could even count on one hand the number of 1st down Dive's into the left of the line or Butler holding call's or Crable personal foul's. Did we run the TE Waggle even once?
- Lloyd Carr is the official S.E.C. Killer. See Bucknuts, this is how it's done. You're welcome.
- The S.E.C. reputation of Speed is a myth. The Big-10 reputation of Power is not.
- I hope Rich was taking good notes. He's got some real thoroughbreds now that can be scary-good when well motivated and conditioned. He does not have to out-scheme himself with Short Stacks and Bed Spreads and No Parking Zones and whatever.
- There's another vague thought in my head . . . something about what could have been and why wait until the very last game to do this? For the sake of my sanity, I shall repress it.

From a Notre Dame fan, that was pretty cool to see Lloyd get that win yesterday, and it was pretty cool to see the class he's always had, and that it triumphed over a sleezeball like Meyer.
So congrats Big Blue, after the year the midwest has had this year, we all needed that win.

re: Brian's comments on Crable's claim about our defense.
C'mon, Brian. 35 points be damned, this defense played about as well as you can against a superior and well-oiled Florida offense. Tebow averaged less than 5 yards per attempt! Save for the TD throws, he did not do any damage through the air. We basically just failed to contain Harvin, which was to be expected. Our pass rush was fantastic, Tebow routinely ate dirt, and the bottom line is that was a solid defensive performance - 35 pts be damned

I'm amazed that the Michigan game isn't getting more play than it is. Consider the whole End of an Era thing, the Old beats New, & the 10.5 point spread.
I'm in NY city, so maybe it is getting more play in Michigan, but I am a little bummed about the lack of kudos. I think we were the 2nd biggest post-new years underdogs behind Illinois and we are getting no love.

Trent has one more year, correct? I'm suddenly optomistic that our secondary will be good next year if he's back. Warren's ready to make The Leap, Trent's a solid #1 corner, and if Stevie Brown plays more like the Florida Stevie Browns as opposed to the App State one...we'll be pretty solid back there.

The secondary should be adequate. Warren/Trent at corner is probably one of the better combos out there. Stevie Brown shouldn't suck. Booboo as a nickel should theoretically be a positive. Brendan Harrison played awfull well this year, and would fit in somewhere. The only ?? mark is who plays the 2nd safety spot. Would it be Harrison, if we decide to play Booboo at nickel?

"Defensive meeting.
"Eyes up!" English shouts to Michigan's defensive players.
After giving brief instructions, the defensive staff leaves the room as the lights are turned down.
Captain Shawn Crable points to the door, signaling for a visitor to leave, too, so that the defensive players can be alone for a ritual they've done for more than a decade under the well-read Carr.
"I've never been in there, but I know they recite one of Rudyard Kipling's poems," English says while waiting for an elevator.
"Do you still know it?" English asks graduate assistant coach Glen Steele, who helped Michigan win the 1997 national championship as a defensive end.
"The strength of the pack is the wolf, and the strength of the wolf is the pack," Steele says, ending the passage without hesitating in an elevator."

To me, the best thing about Arrington's catch was that he didn't try to adjust the ball in his hand after gaining control. Watch it again -- he gains control of the ball in a strange way, holding the ball around the middle of the ball rather than on the "nose" of the ball. Had he tried to adjust his hold on the ball (which is a natural reaction, even if he had full control of it) the play would likely have been reviewed and overturned.

The idea of Mallett tranferring is ludicrous. Is there someone out there who actually thinks it possible that a big time ego/skill QB wholding a starting job as a true sophomore at one of the top 5 programs in the country with a new coach that builds everything around his QB and has a history of record-breaking passing proficiency would leave to sit out a year at another program where he would not be guaranteed even a starting job? For what?

What I noticed is that the spread offense QBs were pretty lousy passers. And, the missed passes more than made up for any QB runs.

If Mallett is all about winning, he will stay, and RRod will build an "Alex Smith / Utah Utes" offense for him.
However, Mallett seems more intrigued by making the NFL than being a winner. I think his dad has been in conversion with Bobby Petrino this whole time, and look for him to leave before the start of winter semester so he can avoid the snow.

dex- disagree RE relevance. IMO, games like the one yesterday help to dismantle the constant argument from the media that the SEC is faster and more gifted at the skill positions than the Big 10. After the topsy-turvy year Michigan had, the double digit spread on the game, and the Big 10 representative facing the offensive scheme that embarrassed them in the first 2 games of the year, it forces many to rethink the "SEC is dominant" argument...

I don't disagree with your assessment. But nationally, to the average fan, I don't think too much attention is paid to games that aren't the BCS. More importantly, the D came up big on the last two Fla. possessions. That was probably what Crable was talking about.
Re: Tebow vs. Henne. Check out the 3rd down conversions (UM 10-15 & UF 2-11). Henne was freaking awesome yesterday.

Would it be safe to assume the coaches didn't 'lay down' b/c they were essentially applying for jobs and interviewing all at the same time yesterday?
Even though friends should keep each other 'sharp', maybe the security of being Lloyd's friend didn't really compel the coaching staff to be 'creative' until their career depended upon it.
FWIW.

At WVU, RRod prefers to have the slotback be a RB/WR hybrid (think Noel Devine). I can see McGuffie being a natural in that role, but I am reluctant to pencil in a true freshman without seeing him play first.
RRod also preferred a tall jumpball guy at one of the WR, that's why I put Butler there. I think Martell Webb may be a good fit there as well.

We also have 4-star Tony Clemons, and 4-star Martwell Webb on the roster - both of whom are more highly touted than Hemingway, and equally as touted as Stonum. With 5 solid options at WR, we're not converting Carson Butler.

I think Hemingway will get the #2 WR behing Matthews, but I am excited to see the Tony Clemons show. We have so many good receivers, I am nervous about wasting them.
With regard to RB, I think Minor or McGuffie get the nod, with Avery Horn in the mix as well... second fastest back on the team behind McGuffie. I think Rich Rod makes some surprising roster moves.

@ dex--I can say the shoddy coverage of the game is wrong, wrong, wrong, and not just b/c I'm a Mich grad and huge fan (although I am admittedly extremely biased and po'd about it). Chad Henne's performance yesterday was tremendous, a career day. Plus what Michigan did to the Heisman trophy winner should have gotten much, much more coverage than it did. Arrington's catch was beyond spectacular. All this in the setting of Lloyd's last game...it's a big story, much bigger then you would think by looking at the lack of post-game coverage. Aside from Mizzou's RB, Henne's performance was the grittiest and best of the day given the odds and context of the game and year IMO. There is no excuse for not recognizing it as such.

You are viewing it differently than I'm trying to get across. It was a good game, it was a good performance. But the rest of the country doesn't care. Mizzou fans are probably on their boards screaming that they didn't get enough pub for dismantling a second tier SEC team and proving they belonged in the BCS over KU.
Was it a great win and story? Sure. But I don't think it's all that interesting to fans outside the Big 10.

Sort of agree with your defense. I'm not sure about Logan, but the LB's are a toss-up, anyway.
Basically, if we go with that alignment, Brandon Graham probably becomes just as much of a "linebacker" as James Hall was back in '97 (ie, not really much of one at all).

"...it wasn't a BCS game and it was an unranked UM playing Florida in an exhibition game. Outside of fans of the school, it really is pretty irrelevant."
From the standpoint of the MNC, you're right about the irrelevancy. WRT to college football in general, totally disagree. Given the passionate opinions held by SEC fans and B10 fans about the relative merits of their conferences, I think this game mattered a lot. Before the game it may have mattered more to Michigan and B10 fans, but I'd bet that Fla and SEC fans now care much more than they did before. With the current prominence of the SEC nationally, the status of Florida as defending NC, Tebow the Heisman wonder, and of course Michigan's tradition and coaching change, I think this game mattered more to the average college fan nationally than any media attention (or lack thereof) would necessarily indicate.

dex, you're probably right but it still frustrates me to no end. Hemingway was a good, not great WR prospect. Think Jason Avant.
And Darryl Stonum is undoubtedly our best WR prospect since Mario came aboard. In fact, he's a carbon copy of Mario from the vids I've seen. Super speed, has a great double move -and we can only assume he's got better hands, since you can't get worse than the pair Mario has.

I think this has been mentioned before, but I thought it was worth re-posting. Here's an excerpt from the poem the Michigan defense recites the day of every game -- and a tradition I hope RR keeps:
Now this is the Law of the Jungle
- as old and as true as the sky;
And the Wolf that shall keep it may prosper,
but the Wolf that shall break it must die.
As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk
the Law runneth forward and back—
For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf,
and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.

D war is on track to go to the NFL in two years. He has a starting slot locked down, barring injury. He would have to be galactically stupid to transfer.
Mallet/Threet are in a tricky spot. If Pryor commits, they will have to beat out the #1 QB that fits RR system perfectly. They would lose one year if they fail to beat him out. Big risk. The transfer option would be smart choice for both.
If Pryor doesn't commit, then Mallet stays and start for three years, most likely, with threet in the wings.
The big reason for success yesterday on offense was the quick release of Henne. He rarely held the ball longer then 3 secs making it impossible (unless up the middle) to get pressure. Plus, the passing came at all downs and distants. They could not load up to stop a predictable play. As long as Henne was able to make a correct read at the line and the receiver get seperation, it just came down to pitch and catch.
Tebow was not as successful because trent/dwar/adams/etc did a good job of tight coverage and blitzing then having a chance.

I don't get how there are UM fans who are rooting for OSU in the BCS championship. I get the whole "let's make the Big Ten look good" and "SEC is evil" arguments, but:
1. Les Miles is a guy who bleeds maize and blue and loves Michigan. He is like the second coming of Bo Schembechler. Yeah he couldn't take the job here, because he had an MNC to play for. But Les Miles is family, and we should always root for family.
2. It is clearly not in our self-interest from a recruiting standpoint to be competing against an OSU franchise which has won two MNCs this decade.

Freaking ABC did a recap of Michigan's season during an early part of the game, and after noting another loss to OSU they put up a graphic of Carr looking downcast and noted that he "Resigned." The announcer all but bit back the words "IN DISGRACE." Nice going, ABC.

It's too bad there aren't more coaches like Lloyd Carr out there. The guy has integrity and is a class act.
As for all the shit you people talk about Urban Meyer, if you knew how much of a disciplinarian he is and how much he helps his players get on track academically, and removed your Michigan bias from getting bumped out of last years NC game, you'll find the two really aren't that different.
