Yes, Pryor is a good QB. But, as much as I hate Drew Sharp, I think his second article about Pryor to Michigan was more correct than his first. We should be able to win without him. I still want him, but it won't be the end of the world.

Actually, what would be better than getting Pryor is having him go to OSU and beating him soundly for four years anyway. This kid sounds like a chump. Super-natural-athlete-chump, but chump nonetheless. Unless he does a lot of growing up, he may not be the kind of guy we want as the face of our football program.

Phil Taylor at cnnsi talks about how Rodriquez taking the Michigan job was unfair to Mallett and the NCAA should allow the freedom not to sit out a year.
This ignores, of course, the fact Ryan could have stayed through spring ball and there were transfer rumors a year ago.

Maybe, but he's only going to be a change of pace at OSU next year. It doesn't really matter how much better or worse their OL is because Boeckman and Henton are going to get the majority of snaps.

I have been looking at the Pryor comments and want to bring up one theory I have been working on.
Most of us and the media assume that our offensive system is preferable to OSU's for Pryor. Both TP and Charlie have stated that TP's development is one of their chief concerns. While I believe TP would be more comfortable playing in RR's system right away, I think that it is possible that his long term development would be aided by being forced to leave his comfort zone. While OSU's system is not as tailored to his current skills, they would probably force him to develop the skills he needs to play QB in the NFL.
Just look at Pat White, he has become a great college player but not a pro prospect at QB. If you remember, TP seemed less than enthused after his visit from seeing so many clips of Pat White. I don't think TP wants to be like Pat White. He would much rather be compared to Troy Smith who developed into a good thrower and won the heisman.
Sorry if this sounds negative, I still hopes he comes to UM.

As I have said before, if TP (or any athlete) considers his stay at Michigan to be nothing more than an extended NFL tryout, he's welcome to go elsewhere.
If your analysis is correct, MLAWyer, then OSU is indeed where he belongs. I want players for whom the maize and blue means something, not mercenaries.

Batch and RR had a conversation about the amount of passing that would be in RR's offense with TP. RR said he would pass more. Either he's lying or TP will get an equal opportunity to develop his passing skills at both schools. Justin Zwick, Todd Boeckmann, Craig Krenzel and Robbie Schoenhoft all think Tressel is great at developing NFL QBs.

MLAWyer, you are assuming that TS will be successful in the NFL. Seeing that he won the Heisman and was a late rounder, it seems unlikely. You are also assuming that Pat White will even lower rated than TS, after PW's senior season.
What structurally about OSU's system is more NFL like? If TP really cared about an NFL preparation, he would have seriously looked at M (w/ Loeffler, before RR), USC, or any number of the programs that have a tendency to produce NFL QBs.

Two comments re: Mallett -
1. I agree w/ SI that players in his situation should not be punished.
2. On WTKA last week Carty said that several of Mallett's teammates were happy to see him go. Carty attributed this to his ego, which was out of control due to the madness of recruiting these days, and said it is likely to be the case with TP. I know he's just a kid but what kind of monster would enjoy/feed off this kind of attention?

My son plays H.S football here in A2. I stress education to him, he is a 3.7gpa kid.
I stress that he is playing a sport where there is a good chance that he WILL get hurt!. I ask him...what if you get hurt and can no longer play FB? You better have a good backup plan...like being able to get into med school.
I dont think that alot of parents stress this to their kids and what happens more often than not with these athletes is that the graduate with a degree not worth squat!
My question is: has any of these kid said what field of study they want to go into?

Pat White isn't an NFL QB because he's 6 feet tall and can't throw into a light breeze let alone a stiff wind. A QB with Pat White's numbers and skill set but with better measurables would absolutely be an NFL QB prospect.

On talent and ability alone, TP is probably the QB RR has been dreaming of since his days at G State. But there's a lot of smoke there which make us (the trailing school) wary. However, I can't help but think that if TP had been a UM lean all these weeks, we would have found a way to rationalize away most of those alleged transgressions.

Good comments all, It is certainly possible (and probably likely) that TP does not see it this way and does like Michigan's offensive system more. I just wanted to bring up something we might be missing.
It is also possible that RR could promise to pass more. I would counter that argument by saying that simply adding more passes into the RR spread is not the same as developing QB skills in a pro system. I am interested to see how this plays out.

Buncha good comments here re: Pryor. I too have wondered whether our depleted O line might discourage him.(I see we just lost one while I was typing to FSU, but he's nuts to head there.)
I'm not completely convinced that Pryor's an asshole, btw, but a fairly bright kid with it going to his head. My hunch is the yoyos love him if he comes our way.
Now what's all this about RR going to PA while Daniels is here? THAT frightens me.
Finally, I love the way Daniels throws on the run. It'll be harder to do in the B10, but hot damn. He's also a very purposeful side-to-side runner with very little wasted motion. . . just a single well-timed juke when he needs it (some of those defenders on YouTube are still hunting for their straps!)

if you mean the easiest path to the national championship game in the country, i mean, surely even through our maize-and-blue glasses we can see the allure of that. especially if he doesn't mind chilling behind boeckman for a year instead of being thrust into the spotlight a la claussen/mallett. with the recent history, and for a dude with no emotional ties to the rivalry, you sort of have to expect he'll favor ohio, don't you? plus, class is probably easier, and like, you get a 'vette, dude.

I don't think Phil Taylor was wrong at all. Why should a kid who came to a school have to be married to that school, or be punished if his coach leaves. And spare me the 'he came to school, not just for a coach.' Obviously, who the coach is plays a major factor in a kid's decision.
I see nothing wrong with Taylor's sentiment, even if I do take exception to some of his characterizations of DickRod.

There's about 8 billion reasons a kid should have to sit out a year for transferring even when his coach leaves. This is a complete effing non-issue.
As big a part as Lloyd was or was not of Mallet's decision, Mallet would be the first person in the history of ever to not have had some clue Lloyd may retire. Obviously he didn't know Rich was going to be the coach, but Rich didn't exactly force Mallet out either, calls to a high school player - whom Rich was already recruiting at WVU and who two months later still has given no indication he'll actually attend UM - aside.

If TP elects to go to fOSU, I hope that he gets just enough PT to commit some colossal freshman mistake and cost them a game that they should have won. Then Laurinaitis and the rest of the returning Buckeyes can be this year's Hart, Henne and Long. It would serve them right, if their recruiting practices are as nefarious and underhanded as they appear to be.
That is one thing that many people seem to overlook. If TP comes to Michigan, he will be expected to make some mistakes while learning. If he goes to fOSU he will either not play right away, or he may risk ruining the NC hopes of all of those returning upperclassmen. If he doesn't play, then he ends up taking over a team full of young guys after the upperclassmen leave, which is exactly why fOSU fans say that he shouldn't go to Michigan. Or am I missing something (other than a Corvette)?
Also, I agree that if TP is not an upstanding guy, then I won't miss him, despite his tremendous upside. That being said, I hope that he comes to Michigan and turns out to be a great Michigan Man.

dex, I hear you about all this Michigan Man stuff lately. It's all a little too much and starting to sound a little bit silly. AND!... when I went to M (1987-1991) we all just called the place where the football team played "Michigan Stadium" or simply "the stadium" (because everyone knew you weren't referring to Crisler or Yost unless you actually said "Crisler" or "Yost.")
I've never liked "the Big House" nickname. Thanks for nothing, Keith Jackson. I'd prefer it if our facility wasn't a slang term for prison.

sometimes these things are counterintuitive. 2-3 years ago, osu was so close to the mendoza line wrt APR #s that they had to be REALLY selective in the guys they offer. if they offer academically questionable guys and they eventually drop osu's APR below the glass floor, that means s'ship reductions, etc. not sure about this situation specifically, tho.

I think TP to OSU has a real chance to backfire for him. I think it safe to say, he doesn't sniff the field next year (unless injury). Then he has to contend with Henton, who is no slouch from all that I hear (on campus every week). He may find himself in a Simms/Applewhite situation where even though he is the bomb, he can't get PT.

I understand that the whole Michigan Man thing can come off as a little trite. I simply intended it as shorthand for someone who demonstrates integrity, respects the tradition of the school, is actually bright enough to earn a degree if he sticks around, does not get arrested, etc.
Sadly, these things are becoming more rare in the sporting world, and I hope that Michigan will continue to uphold the tradition of holding its athletes and coaches to a higher standard. I can spell it out in the long form in the future, if it will make you more comfortable...

There's nothing funnier than logging on here every day and reading all these sour grape, halfassed arguments against Terrell Pryor. So many assumptions have been made, so little evidence is presented to back up all these wild assertions, and it's pathetic to see how holier-than-thou we can act when we come across a recruit who *gasp* might just be interested in going elsewhere. And for the poster above who said he wanted no part of a recruit who looked at Michigan as merely an NFL launching pad....wake up, join the rest of us in 2008, and understand that that is exactly what college athletics has become. Enough with this integrity bullshit. This is a business, and it's Michigan's business to get the best players possible...without looking TOO shady in the process(read: Leave local glass warehouse owners out of it, and dont send recruits to recruit another recruit)

I think the problem with your theory about Pryor's development is that you think attending OSU would AID his maturation. There's no proof that OSU's system will help him succeed on the next level.
I don't remember the last OSU quarterback who was successful on the NFL level. They had good teams in the '90s and into this decade, and none of them have done anything (although I guess Troy Smith still has a shot of being decent).
Even Rodriguez's Tulane and Clemson QBs made better NFLers than Cooper and Tressel's Buckeye QBs.

Basing an evaluation of who is better on highlight tapes is a bit off - the tapes, by their very nature, cast the kid int he best possible light. Anyway, it's hard to make any call based on 50 or so plays from both kid's careers.
That said, BJ Daniels' tape had better music.

i got a buddy, that used to coach in pa. has watched pryor the last couple of years.... he's an osu and pitt fan... anyway, his comments about pryor, and this is a guy who coached in florida as well, were that he was a man among boys... He said as a safety the guy closed faster than anyone he had ever seen. i said something about his arm stregth, he said the guy had a cannon... so take it for what its worth... he really just might be THAT good, or my buddy is just excited to say he watched him play, both are possibilities...

Daniels needs a lot of work, he reminds me of a less athletic Vick coming out of HS (which is not meant as a complement) He uses his legs and just hucks it deep because it's impossible to cover someone for 6-8 seconds. The safeties may not be bad it just may be his ability to elude the pass rush (which will not be as apparent in college) and a cannon for deep balls. Don't think he is the second coming or better than Pryor if the two are being compared now.
Keegan |

With all of the recruiting publicity, the ncaa is going to be forced into investigating the pryor situation. Tressel will eventually be broght down. He escaped all of the vilations ay Youngstown State and has been lucky getting away with it at Ohio State. It's only a metter of time.
Mike Maize |

Keegan - that's valid. On his highlight film, Daniels did buy absurd amounts of time with his legs, which obviously helps his receivers run free of the safeties. SO I PROVISIONALY WITHDRAW THE COMMENT THAT BJ DANIELS PLAYED AGAINST CRIPPLES.

For the record, as cliche as it is at this point, I noticed a heckuva lot of Vince Young in Pryor when I actually had my rivals membership and watched his tapes. Both had/will struggle their first year or two throwing the ball, but they will more than make up for it with their freakish size/speed combination. These guys can actually run OVER dbs. I could care less if Pryor never throws for 2500 yards in a single season at UM(if he commits), but I do know his playmking ability on the ground alone, combined with a tremendous supporting cast, would result in a whole lot of Ws in our future. Be our Vince Young, TP. Be our Vince Young.

The QB Coach paints a bleak picture for us, but we shouldn't forfeit our '08 games just yet...
Even if an incoming-freshman QB doesn't start for us next year, I think Cone or Threet will do us proud. Coach Rodriguez seems to pride himself on adapting "the system" to the tools on-hand...and Cone & Threet aren't exactly rusty tools. By all *internet* accounts, Threet was going to give Mallet a run for his money in '08 anyway, and for Cone to impress Coach Loeffler there's gotta' be a little fire behind that smoke.
Might our offensive learning curve be less-steep if Coach Rodriguez installs more of a passer-esque "spread" around Cone/Threet, while he searches for the dual-threat QB he seemingly covets in the meantime?

chitown,
I know because we had a crazy-elusive QB on my HS team, wasn't fast but could always buy time. We had a good secondary and it was impossible to cover guys with him running around. Plus, the temptation to just run up and make a play is huge, so I bet a lot of safeties did that as well with Daniels.
Keegan |

Please stop throwing Cone's name around as a legitimate option at QB.
I wholly believe Threet is a solid QB and we would make due with him - if both he and Mallett played in the exact same situation we'd be giving them next year, their production would be pretty much a wash. But Cone? Stab me.

Stop with the TP is overrated. Yeah, I'll be happy to get Daniels, and yeah, I don't want TP to be a distraction if he comes here, but don't say he's overrated off of watching his Rivals video and never having seen him live. 07 michgrad,
Coaches use way more than Rivals videos to scout kids especially a 5* recruit. they go see him live, they get complete game film not just highlights and they watch them at combines and camps. Rivals videos are for fans to watch stuff like McGuffie flip over Shugarts. Coaches only using the recruit sites to get try to catch any rumor about their recruit and what he may or may not think/be doing, nothing else. It's not just your post it's every "I don't want TP, he's a bad-apple, he's doesn't wear deodorant often enough" posts that wear thin. yeah, but he is also getting ALOT of attention b/c he has committed anywhere (and for good reason). but I guarantee you if he had committed earlier in the process he would not be discussed as heavily. Dan O'Neill, Brandon Moore, and Cissoko all committed relatively early and have seen their stock drop since. That has happened b/c alot of people didn't feel the need to talk about recruits who were already committed.

07,
You're right, the hype is huge because he hasn't committed, but he was the #1 Jr last year, so he already had a ton of hype around him. Especially from VY's rose bowl/domination of all things CFB. Sorry to blow up, it wasn't at you, I remember a lot of your posts being pro-TP I just get tired of reading the whole thread and more and more people going "he's not coming here, he sucks" even though I know that's not how you meant it.

I would love to have TP, and losing him to OSU would be a huge loss, but we can still win without him. Ever heard of Pat White, or even Armanti Edwards? Nobody recruited these guys, and they have done really well. A player's star ranking on Scout or Rivals doesn't always predict success.
I'm not kidding myself either. Texas recruited Vince Young along with four other 5* recruits. That worked out pretty well.
I suddenly have this feeling that everything will point to OSU, and then TP will catch everyone off guard and choose UM. Whatever. I mostly want someone at QB whom we love to cheer for, kind of like Mike Hart at RB.

A lot of times the recruits don't see the HC until Sunday. I agree with you, I'd be a little miffed about it, but if you're Feagins or Daniels you should know that's how the game goes sometimes. I hope I'm wrong, but my gut tells me that Pryor is going to Ohio State. He appears to have friends there and I just sense a coolness toward Michigan, and perhaps a a gradual realization that he alone will have to, like Mike Hart the last 3 years, carry the team on his shoulders - and as a freshmen. While it's going to be exciting to see the change in offensive philosphy in 2008 and beyond with RR at Michigan, I think Michigan fans are going to have to be patient with respect to building a championship team.

"I still say its too late in the year for us to pull in TP."
yup, and not to mention that Tressel has been recruiting TP for two years now. It's hard to make up that ground in a couple of months against a program that's been to two straight NC games, even if they lost both. If RR did pull him in, that would be a huge coup. If not, we'll be fine.

Anthony |

I think several of the commenters are displaying sour grapes over TP b/c he'll likely end up at OSU at this point. It has gotten pretty ridiculous. He is clearly an impressive talent that could do great things in Rich Rod's system, and we should not be discounting that b/c he may go to OSU. In fact, we should be saying good things about him (which are warranted, btw) b/c any Michigan fan would want him to come here. I know I do. Even though I like BJ Daniels and he is a good backup plan, TP is the guy I really want as the QB for Rich Rod's spread.

Good point. All the recruits want to know where they stand. They know Pryor is good and is going to be a tough guy to beat.
It's a tough choice between being #2 or #3 behind Pryor at Michigan or a #1 at a smaller school. If Pryor's not coming, it's Katie bar the door.

Oregon's bigtime QB recruit is Darron Thomas out of Houston Aldine. He is a great player and RR should call him. He can't be happy that Oregon is hot for Pryor. Jackson has done great job recruiting North Houston over the years, going back about 15 years so they should push.

Gotta believe Toney Clemons
is in Pryor's ear. There is no doubt! Also, I know Martin is on Pryor as well. I think the good guys get Pryor. I know there is a ton of negative stuff in regards to our chances, but I gotta a little bird who tells me otherwise. Thats all I can say, which may seem convenient, but it is what it is. My little bird has been dead on about everything outside of Legion, and that was a freaking circus. He called RR to UM real early. But whatever, we'll see if we're right come Feb 6th.
Non Recruiting: I know signing day is approaching, but man, I am freaking jacked up thinking about our new team this year. All our playmakers in space! We return a lot of D. Our young coaching staff makes me think agressive agressive agressive. But calculated agressiveness, almost like organized chaos. And I can't wait to see the wheels on our secondary after a spring with the Barwis Initiative. Fast LBs, we return our whole DLine. Ahhhh, I can't wait.

I really think as of right now OSU wants to keep Pryor away from UM more than they want Pryor themselves. There is no way Tressel is going to give Pryor and significant playing time over 6th year senior and returning starter Boekman. Beanie wells is the best player on OSU, you better believe that Tressel is going to give him the ball way more than he throws it.

I don't really get the thing about Barwis, either. There isn't anything a trainer does that in principle you couldn't do yourself.
A trainer supplies external motivation, an authority to push you harder than you would push yourself. You don't need Barwis to run on a treadmill, but with him you will run longer and faster than you would without him.

Henton's problem with transfering is that he already has had a RS year so he will lose a year of eligiblity if he transfers. I've heard some rumblings that OSU will be using two qbs at time in '08 so I'm guessing they are trying to get henton some PT so he doesn't transfer.

I hope that we get Perry too. I am getting really tired of Caroll and USC. Somebody posted a link to 2009 recruiting because Michigan already has a 5* commitment in the top 100. Scrolling through you could see that USC already had about 10 commitments out of the top 100. It is amazing how many top prospects are willing to go there to sit 4 deep on the bench.
I guess that once it becomes widely known that you will buy houses for your players and the NCAA will look the other way, the whole recruiting thing gets a lot easier...

I feel that losing Pryor would be a major blow but its definetly not the end of the world. Maybe he'll end up being the next justin Zwick or he might not every beat out Henton who doesn't seem to be the least bit scared of him coming in. Also, even if he is the second coming of VY let's remember VY got raped by OU his first two years despite having an insane amount of talent around him. Plus, Ohio state loses nearly everyone after the 2008 season. Who the hell is he gonna throw it to?
I'll be more than ok if we dont get pryor but get perry instead. But i DO NOT want Shepard as a qb. He's reggie ball level bad throwing the football, look at his numbers. Under a thousand yards both seasons and under 50% completion percentage. Can you say Wide reciever?

Not sure if anyone saw this, but our lone 2009 commitment William Campbell was recently given the 5* status by rivals. Looking at the short film they had on him...he looks like a BEAST! 6'4", 327 pounds, appears to be mostly muscle, and shows a lot of quickness.

I know RR is obviously busy closing this class out, but Campbell is a guy we need to make sure stays committed. If we can get Perry this year, along with Martin and Campbell, this will be quite a force in a few years, a la Branch, Woodley, etc.

Question to any teachers out there.
Do you guys get paid for the time you teach (nine months) and it just gets spread out over 12 months? Or is it a 12 month salary?
Not being a smart ass here, I think teachers should be paid more than politicians do and a lot more at that.

"Does anyone else feel kinda nostalgic for the Lloyd era, where we didn't really give two-shits about recruiting?"
Are you freaking kidding me? This year is no different... I've been listening to guys like Allen Wallace, Tom Lemming, Bill Kurelic, and Tom Beaver blather on breathlessly about Michigan recruiting on the radio for at least 10 years.
The most frequent criticism of Lloyd Carr that I heard during his tenure went something like, "Fire Lloyd Carr - we get top five recruiting classes every year, so we shouldn't lose any games." Putting aside the fact that we didn't get top five classes every year, that statement revealed that people were taking recruiting rankings too seriously during the Carr era. It won't change under RR, either.

2. Re: Weis
I have to think ND is still a big name. Even with the subpar results, it's ND- and what football fan doesn't know about the tradition there? Being UM fans we have a natural aversion to them, but if I were a highly recruited football player, the gold helmets, NBC deal, and general tradition of the program would at least make me consider it- especially since if they win 9 games they are guaranteed a huge bowl.

People love underdogs because most of us are failures when compared to our high expectations (god knows I am). I'm assuming that Lloyd and Mitch are both reasonably wealthy men. So, why do they insist on getting their haircut with a straight line of hair around mid-ear? That bothers me.

its funny because the freep went from being a respected newspaper to featuring two of the biggest jokes in america.
also, did anyone read the article about bj daniels today? it states, factually, that daniels scored "10 or 15 touchdowns" last year running the ball.
really? 10 or 15? i thought touchdowns scored was an absolute number, not a range. guess not.

It's tough to tell the difference between passing TDs and rushing TDs for reporters. So confusing. And all those dark players look a like, it could have been any one of them.

1. Color me surprised, a football team had the foresight to think going into a game that they were going to win? Ideally, every team would think that every time they played a game.
2. Nice headline in that article, since the quote is
"We knew we were going to win," Brown said. "Well, we knew we weren't going to look like fools, that we would at least give them a good game."

"The big schools recruit good-looking players," Brown said. "They don't always recruit players who can play well. Nobody took a shot on Corey Lynch because he looks like crap."
This is an amazing quote from a teammate.

Obviously, you're not politically informed, because you clearly don't recognize the mentality of the "Give Up Before We Lose!" Democratic Party.

Albom is one of those sportswriters who thinks they could just as easily have been a philosophy professor. But because they wanted to indulge their quirky playful side, they decided to follow their true love -- sports, which they have indulged in vicariously since they were kids.

Mitch Albom is mad because one time he stumbled into Rick's, thought he was in heaven, and then got herpies from one of the girls. He's been writing trite and contemptable filth ever since. Not to mention completely making up lies. Him and Pat Forde should share the ooky cookie.

It was 1996, and I was 11 years old.

I hated Tuesday With Morrie. It was so cheesy and Mitch has no heart. LOL big gay heart. I didn't grow up reading him and then I just read TWM one day, and Albom really seems like a sanctimonious little prick.
Someone better not even think of making a movie about App State. It wasn't about them winning as much as it was about UM playing a shitty game and losing. Now Boise St. was impressive.
Someone is actually making a movie about Ryan Leaf. I think it's an independent project, but that's pretty funny.

Dan Hawkins is a great recruiter and even better coach. He is also very charismatic, you can find his blog at cubuffs.com called Bloggin' with Hawk. Really, a very philosophical guy with a lot of interests. He should be credited with building the Boise State program. It's only his second year at CU and he is turning it around, he started in a very difficult situation in Boulder. They won 2 games his first year, and 6 in his second including a win over Oklahoma. I am hoping he can land Darrell Scott over Texas, we'll see come NSD.

Hawkins should just take recruits to sex parties. It worked for Gary Barnett.
It's just hard to think of someone as a great recruiter when he has his son at QB.

Troy Smith sparked a lethargic Ravens offense, so much so that he started a few games towards the end of the season. Give him a chance before you write him off as a flop.
