Gravatar I love how a 17 year old high school student knows how a RB would be used in a zone blocking scheme. Not to mention that a 5'10" person 'knows' that someone will be a great tackle because they can knock his scrawny buttocks down. And the funniest part is that a purported grown-up has the audacity to rely on this worthless information as somehow credible. Morons.

Gravatar An FJM reference on Mgoblog.

My world is now complete.

Gravatar "Lloyd, there's only one way to lose your job at Michigan, and that's if you cheat."

Or you can get loaded at a restaurant in Southfield. That works too.

Gravatar Don't Shugarts and McGuffie go to different schools? (Mr. Nuts has it wrong; the correspondent doesn't say.) I thought that Shugarts was from someone else's school - Ortmann, maybe?

Also, is the correspodent really "pretty good friends" with Shugarts but just "walks by" McGuffie in the hall? Seems odd.

Gravatar I could be wrong, but I don't think there is any way a 5' 10" running back could ever make it in the Big Ten, particularly with a run zone blocking scheme.

Sincerely,

Mike Hart

Gravatar Aside from the fact that Michigan uses its tight ends more than OSU. Who would want to get hate mail and death threats for dropping a touchdown pass ala Hamby vs Texas?

I admit it was an important one, but comeon. I wouldn't be surprised if OSU has trouble recruiting TE for a while.

Gravatar I believe Shugarts is from Klein. Both Klein and Cypress are on the northwest side of Houston.

Somebody needs to sit Ronnie down and explain how a zone blocking scheme works. (Perhaps Mike Hart is the man to do it?)

Gravatar As I was trying to remember where in Southfield Mo tied one on, I found some old articles about the incident.

This one (http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html? res=990CE3DA1138F932A35756C0A963958260&n=Top% 2fReference%2fTimes%20Topics%2fOrganizations%2fU% 2fUniversity%20of%20Michigan%20) quotes the AD as saying that Moeller would keep his job. Six days later he was gone.

And this one (http://www.umich.edu/~urecord/9495/May08_95/ moeller.htm) talks about how Lloyd Carr "is not a candidate for the position. He said at the press conference that he 'would not be head coach other than on an interim basis.'"

Somewhat amusing to know how things turned out.

Gravatar Mike,

I totally agree.

Signed,
Jamie Morris

Gravatar Tom,

"Somewhat amusing to know how things turned out."

How things turned out was he beat Ohio State's a$$. Good move by the AD to keep him.

Gravatar Why give Ronnie face time on your blog? Seriously. He wrote a(horrifically written) paragraph that basically boiled down to "Sam small, JB big. i see both them. MCGUFFIE SUCKSSS LLLLLLOYD!!11"
That sort of idiocy has no place in God's kingdom...er, Brian's blog.

The kid clearly has no idea WTF a zone blocking scheme is all about(Here's a hint, douche: You can activate it in NCAA 08. You'd have to play physically to understand), and his opinion is about concrete as the dingleberry making a hammock out of my asshair.

Sorry, went too far, but you get the point: I need to shave my ass.

Gravatar Ronnie,

Appreciated your email. Size truly does matter.

With love,
Max Martin

Gravatar Topher: I'm not saying it wasn't a good move. He won a national title two years later-- I don't think you're going to get many people arguing otherwise.

I just found it amusing that Moeller's job supposedly wasn't in jeopardy according to the AD and that Carr wasn't a candidate to be a full-time replacement.

And his record against OSU is 6-6. He kicked Cooper's ass, but then again so did Mo and Bo. And so did Arizona when Coop was at ASU.

Gravatar Hart, Long, Crable captains. Per Mgoblue.com

Gravatar Christian Wilson, come on down!

What a great year this is turning out to be for the staff.

Gravatar Please no kitten previews.

Gravatar Christian Wilson in the fold,,yaaaayyy

Gravatar I love the insinuation by Buckeye fans that the Cooper years sort of don't count. Can we do the same for the Ellerbe/Amaker years in basketball?

Gravatar "Prodigal"?

Gravatar Carc: I'm not insinuating that the Cooper years don't count. I'm just saying it's stupid to say that Carr has kicked OSU's ass when his record is 6-6 and he started out 5-1.

And you guys found a way to make sure the Steve Fisher years didn't count. I'm sure you'll come up with something for Ellerbe and Amaker.

(Standard acknowledgment of Jim O'Brien goes here.)

Gravatar btw, noel devine is like 5'2.5

/just sayn

Gravatar i love "prodigal scouting ninja"...

it may not be quite as awe-inspiring a title as "Supreme Allied Commander, NATO Forces, Europe", but it is probably the highest title to which "unbiased"-sixteen-year-old-buckeye-expats-in- texas can aspire.

Gravatar Not to further any tendency towards rumor-mongering, but did anyone else notice this little aside from Coach Carr when talking about Coach English at the end of this paragraph in the Carty piece...
"He learned it's a lot different sitting in a room where somebody else is making the decisions. Every single thing that happens out there is (his) responsibility. Do they hustle? Are they executing their assignments? Is it too complicated? Did I involve my coaches? There are so many things you don't know until you've had that responsibility coordinating a defense or an offense, and that's why those jobs prepare you, in a way that nothing else does, to be a head coach."

Gravatar The restaurant was called Excalibur. It was around 12 Mile rd. and Northwestern, but it closed down years ago.

Gravatar Damn - nice catch, RHammer. Thank you for making me feel a little more confident that DeBord won't be handed the reins once Lloyd rides off into the sunset. I will continue to hope and pray that English gets the HC job, DeBord leaves/resumes touring with Jack Black/becomes a missionary/gets demoted, and Lefty gets promoted to OC. Hoping and praying.

Gravatar Bucknuts is fucking insane, especially that douche, Mr. Bucknuts. OSU is in the lead for every single recruit, and when they go somewhere else, OSU didn't want them anyway.

Gravatar To Anyone Who Believes "Ronnie" is a 16 year old Cy Fair Student:

I have some prime ocean-front real estate right off the diag for sale...super cheap too!

That crap is so clearly written by an OSU fan....jeez.

Gravatar Shugarts goes to Klein High School in Spring, TX, due north of Houston. Cy Fair isn't too far away, but not all that close either. My nephew goes to Klein and plays on the football team. Was knocked out last year with an injury . . . working himself back in. Actually, my nephew doesn't have that high an opinion of Shugarts ("He's just big, not all that good. Don't know what the fuss is about.") Well, obviously you can't coach big and strong and fast. Here's a clip on youtube of the TX State playoffs last year, when Klein HS was clobbered by Lufkin. In this clip, Lufkin makes 3 great tackles, and actually knocks a couple of Klein players out of the game. Note that Klein's colors are blue and gold (wrong blue, but you can't have everything.) I gave my nephew a nice wool block M baseball cap I picked up at the Rose Bowl 3 years ago.

Gravatar Excalibur. So is that the strip club kind of Excalibur or the jousting knights kind of Excalibur?

Gravatar To Joe Morgan, a regular reader of the mgoblog comments: I like "portmanteaux" better than "portmaneaus". If you're going to use snooty French words, don't do it half-way.

Gravatar Why do people like Ronnie and recruiting gurus care so much about a player's height at the end of his junior year? I was like 5' 4" then, and now I'm starting college at like 5'10". Obviously, I grew more than usual, but is it really crazy to suggest that Mcguffie and Cissoko could be 6 feet tall by the time they enroll?

Gravatar Well lets see, Moore, Mealor, Wilson, McGuffie, not offered. Koger is. Wow yeah I can see where all the jealousy is coming from by the bucknuts staff. Great you throw to the TE...Whooohooooo, thats such an exciting position man. I can't even begin to think of the last TE to return a punt or kickoff? Unless memory is going faulty I don't seem to recall "The Game" coming down who operates the best use of TE's.

McGuffie=Tim Dwight, a fast white guy whose feats get exaggerated solely based on race and the rarity of white guys actually being supersonic fast. I think its kind of obvious he's going to the slot, I just don't see it even Mike Hart struggles against legitimate competition at his size, See Texas, OSU first two years, USC, PSU, Iowa with anemic run defense all last season shuts him down for 3 and half last year...

Gravatar BUt he did pound your beloved Bucks ass for 150 yards and 3 scores!!!!

Yeah, i guess Hart IS too small for Big 10 level competition.

Gravatar I don't think there's anything wrong with being 5'10"!

Gravatar SOJ- If no jealousy, than why was it necessary for a Bucknut poster to call out that we were somehow using "negative recruiting tactics" to get our TE recruits by saying that we use our TEs more by trying to prove, pathetically I might add, that OSU actually uses their TEs more? Mr.Bucknuts obviously was a bit jealous, or whatever you want to call it, of our TE commits. I could care less of OSU got our TEs, not because I don't think our commitments were great, but OSU's TEs wouldn't be as much of a threat to us as ours would be to our opponents...basically, it don't matta how OSU feels about it. However, if a OSU fan wants to cry sour grapes and make it matter, we'll call him out on the idiocy of his "reality." Laughable. Heaven forbid we defend anything about our program on a Michigan blog. Blasphemy.

Mike Hart struggled vs. PSU in his career? He's never had anything less than 100 yds/4.3ypc vs. PSU. Iowa? 4.1 yards per carry isn't exactly struggling...I don't care how late/early in the game he got it going...he scored 2 TDs (one 9yder and one 10yrder and ran for 126, 51 of those yards in the 3rd Quarter. The whole offense struggled early in that game. Your boy Pittman had about 4.7 vs. Iowa last year...wowza, Mike Hart suxx! Texas? 4.0 yards per carry, 83 yards on 21 in a game dominated by Braylon/Henne and Breaston on Special Teams.

No mention of 2005 injuries (to him and the line)? No mention on a revolving door of an offensive line in bowl games? Weird. It's not his "inferior" size vs. legitimate competition, it's his burst at the line which gave him trouble against the uber blitz' USC gave UM's line. I'll give you USC this year and OSU as a true freshman...but that's about it. Anyways, yeah Mike Hart does suck, you're correct SOJ.

Back to your McGuffie comment, if anything people don't appreciate his skill BECAUSE he's white. How do you exaggerate 3,200 yards against Grade-A Texas competition? How is his speed and athleticism exaggerated, that's freakin obvious as can be? He's Hart, but with more of a quick speed burst...and, get this, more SIZE. Yes, believe it or not, he's not the same 155 lbs he was when the McGuffie mixtape was filmed. Cue: SHOCK. DISBELIEF.

Gravatar I think people have taken my Lloyd Carr-interim job discussion outside of its intended calendrical context.

It's funny to read that Carr was spoken of as not a candidate for the job, because he ended up with the job. I was pointing out that what got him the job was, primarily, beating a superior Ohio State team. How fast your fortunes can turn on how you perform against your rival.

By "beat Ohio State's a$$" I was referring to the 31-23 ballgame that November.

Gravatar I take that back, he's nothing like Hart..and that's not a diss on either of the two fine RBs. They just don't run the same. But if McGuff were black, nobody would say anything to him.

Tim Dwight- How do you exaggerate the record for punt return yardage and TDs in the B10 (until Breaston and Ginn came around)? Or the receiving records for Iowa? (along with irrelevant to this topic B10 championships in track). Or how about a TD return in the Superbowl as a Rookie? Sorry but that was the dumbest comparison ever. If he wasn't so hampered by injuries, he'd be an even better punt returner than he is now. It's not like people are so enamored with Dwight anyways and he wasn't exactly a 1st rd. draft pick either. Again...weird comparison.

Gravatar Topher: Carr was hired permanently on November 15, 1995 (2/3 of the way down here: http://www.michigandaily.com/hom...c-18aa5a8472d4)

The OSU-UM game that year was on November 25th. It had nothing to do with his hiring.

Gravatar Sorry, you have to eliminate the final parenthesis from that last link to make it work.

And just for your amusement, the last game Carr coached as an interim coach was the 5-0 doozy of a win against Purdue.

Gravatar hey, I was at that 5-0 "doozy" which took place in a pleasant, cool, 35 degree driving sleet in which neither offense could reliable handle the ball and the defenses recalled "snow bowl" days of yore. I won't comment on my (lack of) brilliance in wearing shorts to that game, but it was nothing short of a classic (in that nearly-froze-your-testicles-off-while-watching- slippery-hilarity-ensue-at-the-big-house kind of way)...

Gravatar er... that's "reliably"

Gravatar From Wikipedia,

Dwight finished his college career with Big Ten records for punt return yardage (1,102) and punts returned for touchdowns (5); his yardage mark has since been eclipsed by three others and Ohio State's Ted Ginn Jr. has surpassed his touchdown mark. Dwight also holds University of Iowa football records for career receiving yards (2,271) and career receiving touchdowns (21).

While I don't see McGuffie being like Dwight neither do I see any shame in being like Dwight. He damn near ruined '97 for Michigan. His stats also compare favorably to Ginn's (who had the good fortune to be born black is that how it goes?.) Yeah, yeah, Ginn left early but any time you can get your stats mentioned favorably to Ginn's you should be immune to criticism from OSU fans.

Gravatar Maybe Mr. Bucknuts meant that Mike Massey was Michigan's leading receiver among TEs from Ohio. That's the only meaningful stat, since Koger and Moore are from Ohio and Michigan wouldn't be anything without players from Ohio anyway.

WRT Moore, if OSU wanted to counter Michigan's "negative recruiting" of him, the very least they could have done was offer the kid.

Gravatar I don't care who it is -

3,200 yards and 43 touchdowns will get you attention, whatever size or race. If you've seen McGuffie without his pads, you can tell he's well built...and he hasn't even started his senior year.

I'm tired of people basing their perceptions of players on their race. Yes, it's rare that a white running back has received so much attention. Just because it's rare doesn't mean it's unbelievable and/or impossible.

Gravatar For example, it's rare that I get any action.

But it has happened.
