Keegan,
To carry over from the previous thread, I grew up in A2 and while the culture of UM is liberal, I can honestly say that I was shocked by how incredibly more "cultrually" liberal it is out here. Does not compare in my opinion. That's all I got...now on to more football.

That's probably the reason he was frustrating. He is good, just not in the way that staff used him. I think in the pros he could do well on Sp. Teams and maybe certain Pro sets where he is on a TE.

M used to play ND in hoops every year (or close to it) back in the 80s & early 90s. there was a revival for a couple years in 98-99 or 00-01 or something, but nothing since then. not sure why.

Seattle,
I knew a guy that put a republican sign in his yard. He made it a day and then someone drove through his yard and ran it over. I work in Ferndale though, which is Refinery Country up here, so it's pretty conservative once you're north of Bellingham. Add in Lynden's Dutch Christian sect and you've got a strong conservative force. What's funny is Lynden and Ferndale are the only two conservative towns west of the mountains, and they absolutely hate each other, especially in sports.

I mean, I don't think that game was as well-called as the Niagara game the night before, but most of the things that were called were actually penalties. Which is more than I can say for a lot of our CCHA refs.
It still blows my mind how their guy can jack one of our players in the face right in front of the ref and not get called, but I can't complain about the officiating too much when we scored one of our two goals on a power play that we probably shouldn't have been given....and yes I'd be pissed about that one if I was a Clarkson fan (though the amount of complaining you can do when you get shut out is pretty limited).

Brian uses it because he thinks its a funny/unusual combination of words.
Also, from MGoFAQ:
"Unverified Voracity"? Voracity is a weird word to come after "unverified," especially when dealing with a sports blog and not, say, a blog about rumored hunger. The deal: back when the sporadic link-filled posts were untitled, some Iowa sportswriter penned what was to the the first in a long line of intemperate columns ragging on blogs for having the audacity to not be written by sportswriters. Unfortunately for that sportswriter, she inserted the following sentence:
In the new "journalism of assertion," as the report calls it, information is offered with little time and little attempt to independently verify its voracity. [sic]
Sarcasm being what it is, UV was born shortly after.

Um, he's Nate Robertson, and the White Sox offense isn't remotely as bad as they looked last year (and have Swisher, O. Cabrera and C. Quentin batting instead of Erstad, Podsednik and Richar).

Lets go back to 2004, the season of infinite pain for Tigers fans. I managed to make it through that season still a Tigers fan. Now that we fast forward to 2008, and see a possible Tigers 0-4 start, I think I'm going to jump off a bridge. Why not? Its four games into the year I've seen all that I need to see from this team. Oh yeah, and Miguel Cabrera is garbage. He obviously made this team worse. Just because his numbers are comparable to hall of famers such as Al Kaline, Willie Mays and other greats doesn't mean that the Tigers should have traded for him.
I hate bandwagon fans. Especially Tigers bandwagon fans since there are a ridiculous amount of them. Anyone tried to buy a ticket to a night game lately?

2003 was the year of infinite pain. Although 2002 wasn't much better.
We thought about grabbing tickets for the last series in 2003 thinking maybe we'd see history. Glad we didn't waste our money, the Tigers couldn't even get that right that year. If you're going to be bad, you may as well be brutally, horribly, historically bad and be remembered for it. Otherwise you just suck, and that's no fun.

Yeah, the White Sox overpaid severely for both him and Linebrink, but given the Tigers basically went all-in for the present (not much left in the system), what's another $10 million a year to fix a problem that was obvious to everyone?

Ryan Raburn will be a solid player in the majors and he is generally regarded as a legit prospect. He is definitely not jackshit in a trade. If you trade Raburn and throw in a minor leauge prospect you could get a decent middle reliever.

Batista has pretty decent stuff. The Royals tried him out as a starter a couple years ago but he kind of fell into the "magnificent for 2 innings, complete and utter garbage for 2 innings" category.
As for Dotel, see how you feel about him in 4-6 weeks when he starts making regular trips to the DL. He couldn't even close in KC last year, that job should've been Soria's all year. Then he got traded to Atlanta and bombed out big time before finishing the season on the DL in true Octavio Dotel fashion.
The Tigers will be fine. Trading Maybin and Miller for Cabrera and Willis was the right thing to do. This team has a short 2-3 year window to win a title and neither Maybin or Miller were going to do much to get over the hump in that time frame. It does appear that Dombrowski, for all his smarts, severely underestimated the suck-itude of the Tigers bullpen. It's hard to imagine it being worse than last year, but early returns suggest it actually is.

My beef with Dombrowski is that there were pitchers available in free agency that he could've signed to help the situation out. They don't have much in the farm system to offer in a trade. Why get cheap when you already have the second highest payroll in the majors?

Did you watch what happened last year? Miller and Maybin both weren't ready, and the organization admitted that they jumped the gun on bringing Maybin up. Miller was an All-American at UNC and knew what it was like to pitch in big games, unlike Porcello who is 19 years old. The Tigers aren't trying to emulate the Chicago Cubs in terms of taking care of young arms. He may be the most talented player in last year's draft, but he is nowhere near ready to pitch in the majors.

I awoke this morning with my 2 year old daughter staring at me. She had a very serious, perplexed look on her face. I asked, Marah what's wrong? She said "Daddy, Jake Long is a BEAST!" I almost fell out of the bed I was laughing so hard. God I love that kid! Have a great day everyone.

mr. green, some words of encouragment for "poor abused" Coach Rod..
" Even though it is true that abused and non-abused coaches face the same challenges, the internal wiring of the abused coaches who still struggle with damage from the past does not lend itself to the job. Left over rage and shame can carry forward, and in the worst case, cause them to mimic the very behaviors that they may have sworn never to engage. Without a doubt, there is overwhelming evidence that those who were abused are the most likely to abuse their players in turn; thereby perpetuating the cycle of violence and shame.
That being said, if you can overcome your past; if you can get help to manage and reconcile the effects of player abuse in your own life, being a coach can be one of the most rewarding contributions to another person's life that you could ever make. By offering your players love, you come to understand that love for players is possible. Many find that the love they show their players gives back to them the love they never received as a coach

This is NOT a paranoid post because I don't know a lot about when and how Scout/Rivals operates. But, I was checking out UM's DE and SLB Prospects and there were only 4 and 2 respectively. I'm sure there will be more after camps and combines but is that normal to have so few right now? I only ask because we have like 15 WR and RB prospects each. Any clarification is appreciated.

Offense is much easier to grade talent on early on. If the guy was an integral part of the offense, his numbers show it. Defense, outside of total tackles, can be hard to find by just stats.
Just my guess.

Here is a condensation of a recent investigation of the AA News
“Part One: The AA News Snow Job
In a recent series of articles on UM AD Academics, the AA news used a method termed “Proof by verbosity”?essentially a snow job. It uses an overwhelming volume of redundant material to make an argument seem well-researched . But the real intent is to make the piece “so laborious to untangle and check supporting facts that the argument might be allowed to slide by unchallenged.”* ……
Part Two:Academics
Not long ago, the AA News was taken over by a huge conglomerate, under the umbrella of Newhouse News. Its current head, David Newhouse, inherited the family money---about seven times the total wealth of George Steinbrenner. Since we are talking about academic excellence, it’s fair to ask where the boss went to school. ..
Actually,…He dropped out (of Syracuse)
And how about the more immediate leaders in Ann Arbor, like (Knight, who was) responsible for bringing in brilliant writers like JIm Carty………….(He went to)
Central Michigan
….(the) graduation rate at (Knight’s) own alma mater, CMU, is 34%..
By contrast , it was 73% for UM FB PLAYERS**.
….The average individual SAT score (verbal or math) at CMU is 498.
Yes, 498.
That’s right alongside intellectual powerhouses like Georgia Southern and East Tennessee State.
…(So) at CMU, most UM athletes would probably be on the dean’s list. Conversely, if the average CMU student came to UM, his scores would even be not average. In fact, they’d be in the lowest 2-3%...Yes, (according to the US News and World Report) the lowest 2-3%!
In summary the Managerial leader at AA News--Carty's mentor--a crusader for academic integrity-comes from a place with a 34% grad rate and with SAT scores
comparable to Georgia Southern and East Tennessee state.
Hypocrisy at the AA News? Yes. Sour grapes? You be the judge.

Continuation/conclusion of the investigation of the AA News
Part Three: Ethics
Since the AA News has questioned the ethics of the head coach and academic leadership of UM for the past several decades, it’s only fair to take a closer look at the ethics of AA News and its associates. You may begin to wonder about their ethics (for misleading student about the purpose of their interviews) and .. violating ..academic confidentiality…(as well as US law by publishing their grades without permission).
But stop wondering. Just consider some history.
The ultimate boss of the AA News staff, Donald Newhouse, heads Advance publications and the related papers of Newhouse news service…(which has become) a dominant force in the news. How did they become so dominant? “A 1985 grand jury investigated allegations that the news empire conspired to “kill the Cleveland Press, which closed in 1982, giving The Plain Dealer what amounts to a metropolitan daily newspaper monopoly. Then, in 1998, Advance tightened its grip on northern Ohio with the purchase of Sun Newspapers, a chain of twenty-three zoned weeklies in suburban Cleveland.”
… the main editor of the AA News, besides previously working in Lansing, also worked with the current Managing editor of the AA news in Ohio. They were called scabs, as they had crossed picket lines to manage the Youngstown Vindicator (in the previous home of Jim Tressel). Their job was reportedly to break the union. But they actually did more than that: they also overruled a 7-1 vote of the staff and changed the Presidential candidate that the paper endorsed. ..(after firing the staff and changing the editorial endorsement, Newhouse News said it was proud of the “independence” of its papers).
The (facts belie) the supreme hypocrisy involved when the AA News talks about big money interests taking over college athletics and lowering academic standards. The AA News exemplifies the way that big money interests are taking over the news, monopolizing their content… and lowering journalistic standards. … (a paper that) claims “moral expertise” and impugns the ethics of the University of Michigan had better look at his own ethics first.”

Prospect Prophet,
I asked because I was unfamiliar with how Scout/Rivals goes about listing prospects. I had no prior knowledge to what UM Prospect list looked like at this time in previous years. I was asking if it was normal to have so few prospects on D at this time of year and formerlyanonymous cleared that up for me. I didn't want people to think I shouting the usual recruiting paranoia around, just that I was unfamiliar with the process. Don't be a jackass.

I like margaritas. No salt, on the rocks. Will my man card get suspended for this?
Sometimes I order a Corona with a lime slice? Is that OK?
Look....I tried Scotch which is supposedly the most manly drink. Really did. My whole family drinks that crap. But the sh*t tastes like I am drinking somebody's shoe. I can't stand it.
Me likey tequila straight shots when I am at the Boobles Bar. Nothing makes a stripper more fun than a few shots of tequila.
With whiskey, I had too many experiences which resulting in projectile vomitus episodes when I was younger. When I smell whiskey I immediately feel nauseous. So I very rarely drink it anymore.
So for me it's beer, tequila, margaritas.

I've bartended on and off for 12 years and don't really pass judgment. If you like fruity drinks go for it, they're just hard to pull of unless you're at the beach and strawberry daquiries are tough to pull of ANYWHERE if you're a guy. Margaritas are great. I'll drink them on the rocks with extra salt every once in awhile. Scotch is an acquired taste and I love it, but it's hilarious to do so when my dad's around- he equates my drinking a 12 yr. old scotch neat to doing shots of Jager, even though he can get through about 3 beers in the time it takes for me to drink a scotch. Used to be a big Jack Daniels guy, but not so much anymore, and drank the equivalent of Lake Michigan in rum when I lived in St. Thomas. The first week back I put on 8 lbs. in water weight I was so dehydrated. About the only thing I can't stand is Gin.

Look, umbrella drinks are delicious - anyone who claims otherwise is lying. But is it really feasible to drink these in Michigan/Chicago/the entire midwest? Not really. wow,
why do state fans even bother talking football trash. i dont get it. sorry MSU but......
you will never make a rose bowl, let alone a national title game
and all of you are scared to death of this RR offense that is designed for INFERIOR talent to be SUPERIOR talent and welll...........
what happens when RR gets that SUPERIOR talent you ask?
well not only will RR revolutionize the way football is played in the Big10, but will have state fans hoping it was basketball season all year because you are no longer relevant in football for the state of michigan
if you ask the average person who does not live in michigan where east lansing is they will have no clue.
you ask that same person where Ann Arbor is and I guarantee you they know where it is.
sorry sparty but you guys just cant compete with michigan football on many different levels and now that carr is gone your best chances are as well

Two things that better happen in tonight's Tigers game:
1. Verlander must step up and be the ace this team so desperately needs. Shut the White Sox down and make it through at least 7 innings.
2. Keep Jason fucking Grilli in the fucking bullpen! If "Lung Rot" Leyland pitches him in any situation other than a blowout, he should be fucking fired.

Anyone know why MSU is called the Spartans? Well Mr. Spartan, you are the Spartans because Michigan and Ann Arbor has long been known as the Athens of the Midwest. Why Athens you may ask? Because we are the intellectuals, or for you "smart people". And who were Athens rivals? Sparta.....hmm. You guys are so lame, that you have to name your schools mascot in retaliation to us. Go home you pansy ass Spartan and get a life. How about you stop revolving your life around everything Michigan does.

I heard on the radio within the last week or so that Slocum still has to catch up in the conditioning department. It might have been during an interview Sam Webb did on-air with RR. I hope he sees the field... he's been trying to make the team for a long time, and plenty of other guys would have given up and gone elsewhere.

The Tigers start is the universe correcting itself.
After rewarding the long suffering fans with an entirely unexpected World Series run, the bandwagon started to fill up. Last year we all got to enjoy, together, the full stadium, no-hitter, and pennant chase.
Now though, the original fans are being shoved out of the stadium by housewives who just love the Tigers and middle managers that are here to see some fuckin' wins!
So, with a stadium full of jackass fake Tiger fans, what better punishment from the Gods than an 0-6 start?

I don't think it's whiny or entitled to expect something better than an 0-6 start, during which time the team has been pretty much uncompetitive. If the team's 15 games over .500 in September and people are still complaining, then that's a little more whiny and entitled. I also think it's still way too early to start to panic and it pains me that I even have to type that because so many people are freaking out.

Yankees were under .500 like 60 games into the season last year?
I think I've had to bring that up about 5000 times in the past week - and the thing of it is, the same people I was talking to were also adamant that the Yankees would eventually turn it around and that ESPN was overhyping their bad start.
Then people toss out the "x number of teams never finished better than x when starting 0-x", but that's weak to me. Like chitown said, if this happened in July when they were 20 games over .500, not many people would freak. All that stat means to me is that WS Champs/Playoff teams/whaever have not historically had their losing streaks in the first weeks of the season. I don't think it guarantees anything. A great converse would be how many teams starting 5-0 or whatever have *missed* the playoffs.

You're right, MRG, losing 6 straight would raise an eyebrow, but not cause hysteria.
The year they went to the WS, didn't they basically hit a free-fall at the end of the year, losing the division on the last day of the season? Were people going as nuts at the beginning of that slide as they are now?

Unlike financial investments, my expectations of future results are based on past performance. When those two fail to match is when I get upset. Not enough to ruin my day or anything, just general displeasure. Clearly, history would suggest that the Tigers should be something better than the lowest scoring team in the AL.
I wish I could continue to simply enjoy watching the Tigers or any other team as they continue to lose, but I'm not programmed that way. That's not to say that I stopped watching the Tigers or Pistons when they sucked. Just that their sucktitude lessened my enjoyment as a whole. The degree to which my enjoyment was diminished was tempered by the fact that I knew Mike Maroth was going to get lit up.
Having said all of that, 99% of this probably does not relate at all to the mouth breathers on sports talk radio that you are referring to.

tigers: while you can't win a pennant in April, you can certainly lose one. should this slide continue for another 2 weeks (not winless, but if they start like 5-20 or something just as ugly), they could be more than 10 games out. now, is this team 10 games better than anyone in the division over 140 games? doubtful.

All those comments are funny, because:
1. The effect a manager actually has on the outcome of a game is TINY. The most important decisions they make are who to play, and in bullpen management. Things like calling for SB's, or hit-and-runs, or bunts and all that are really just meaningless noise. Leyland has done a good job of putting his best players on the field. Before you act like that's super-easy, let me point you to Dusty Baker.
2. The idea that any Tiger fan would have the stones to pillory Dave Dombrowski is mind-boggling. The fact that they're even in a position to be disappointed is because DD has been an absurd, rioutous success. The fact that this team went to a WS 3 seasons after losing 120 games is an outright miracle.
3. the idea that people think that Cabrera's last 5 games of production outweigh the previous 4 seasons doesn't deserve to have their arguments adressed.

I looked up that '88 Orioles team.
They did have Mickey Tettleton and Fred Lynn - both good players, both got hurt, and had under 250 AB's. Their AB's were then absorbed by things named Jim Traber, Terry Kennedy, Ken Gerhart, and Rene Gonzales. Brady Anderson was a little used rookie on this team.
Their other starters were known-sucks Rick Schu, Bill Ripken, and Joe Orsulak.
The fact that Jeff Ballard was their best SP should sum up their staff well.
That's not a good team, by any estimation. The comparison to the Tigers isn't valid, unless guys start dropping like flies.

Justin Turner Reads Wolverine Commentary
April 03 2008 10:30 PM - Daily Sports
In an obvious response to Wolverine Commentary’s piece on the UM defensive back, Turner told the media today just the opposite.
"Yes, I'm excited about my first year," Turner said. "I plan on being here four years."
Around the office we have long suspected that the Turner turns to “mgoblog.com” for the latest news on their careers and lives. Thanks for confirming that Justin.

Chitownblue,
Trammel didn't do enough backflips, somersaults and cartwheels while making routine plays to satisfy the HoF voters.

There are too many teams that had multi hall of famers to even mention. Take your pick of Red Sox, Reds, and Dodgers teams. Tigers? Ty Cobb played with Sam Crawford (and I stopped looking for more on that team.) The era of free agency will only increase this number. Diamondbacks? Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling stand an excellent chance. Mets? Let's have some fun and say Tom Glavine and Pedro.

Right. So why is everyone worrying? 6 games is nothing to HOF's.
Go Tigers!

Sweet Lou didn't have enough grit, and Trammell once didn't answer a phone call from Woody Paige, so they are automatically DQ'ed.

Potentially, this Tiger team has perhaps 4 HOFs in Cabrera, Sheff, Pudge, and Magglio. Although Sheff will probably have BALCO held against him and Maggs is the definition of long shot.
Plus you never know how Grandy and Verlander will end up.

If Ron Santo and Dick Allen aren't in the HOF because they were generally dicks to the press, I can see a similar fate befalling Sheffield. Plus, Santo and Allen aren't known sterouid users.

Not being selected to the HOF because you didn't like the press, while known hate mongering racist Ty Cobb sits in there, is mind-boggling.

Dex,
Ty Cobb being a racist shouldn't exclude him from the hall of fame. All of MLB was racist. So was much of the US for that matter. I'm amazed that somehow Ty Cobb is always made to be the posterboy for racism in a sport that was horribly biggoted and racist.

I'm not defending it, merely saying that seeing players not receive hardware from MVP's to HOF's because they're not cozy with the press isn't unheard of.

@Jay
Totally agree. My point was that the press is completely off base in excluding guys they don't like personally because personal beliefs, attitudes, should be irrelevant to your performance as a baseball.
@chitown
I know, it's just wacky. I hate baseball writers.

Correction:
Irrelevant to performance as a baseball player. There probably aren't many baseballs elected to the HOF.

I think Field of Dreams is what the media/sports writers think what a HOF player should act like.

Hey, it's not as bad as the black-balling of Dick Allen, who was pilloried by the media when he asked out of Philly - where they threw batteries at him every time he took the field.

David Eckstein wouldn't care if the crowd tossed batteries at him.
Possibly because it's virtually impossible to hit a 3'9" invisible fairy riding a unicorn with a battery, but whatever.

I wouldn't care if the kid was named Woody Hayes as long as he was a viable QB prospect interested in Michigan.

Field of Dreams was a pretty damn good movie- you guys are on crack.
A QB named Darin Erstad would probably help prevent all the Blue Hairs from having heart attacks due to all the change going on with the program. And as I'm pro-Blue Hair heart attack this is a decidedly bad thing. Put me on the Anti-Darin Erstad Bandwagon.
