Honestly, not to steal GBW's recruiting catchphrase, but if Miles is the type of guy that will "crawl through glass" to coach at Michigan, but then pull a U-turn and sign for more money at LSU and supposedly blame Martin for some leaks.... then we dodged a bullett. That's a straight up head case move.
I want him to come. I hope this is not true. But, I mean, the sources are piling up.

Anyone think that Herbstreit being the OSU alum that he is did this on purpose?
Maybe the real situation was that Miles was mulling over a deal, telling UM to keep it quiet until he decided. Then a big news story breaks, his phone blows up and then he gets pissed and nixes the deal.
Or maybe i'm just talking out of my ass. Now things look to get much bleaker from here out.

During his press conference Q&A session, a reporter from Ann Arbor asked Miles about Schembechler's turning down of a $1 million job offer from Texas A&M in the early 1980s in order to stay at Michigan, even though he was making far less money in Ann Arbor.
Miles laughed, shrugged his shoulders, and said, "Bo was a chump. He could have gotten paid, baby! Let's be frank: all that UM-Go Blue horseshit won't buy me that vacation home in Florida I want. Or the vacations in Europe for my family. At the end of the day, it's about the money, the money, the money. It's about time you losers up there figured it out!"

I think this just goes to prove - until UM announces the new coach - ANYTHING could happen.
This could all be just posturintg due to the SEC Championship and LSU team dynamics going into the game (in which case he is still coming). Or he could totally have been counter-offered and taken it (in which case we would not want him. I really can't believe this-it is possible UM made him a BS insulting offer because they didn't really want him, and LSU overreacted not knowing UMs real intentions). There is no reason a counter-counter offer could not be made (that is if UM really wanted him and wasnt' just talking the talk).
Until UM officially announces a hire, it is obvious no one is really going to know anything in this whole deal.

I really think everyone should calm down if it turns out Les Miles is staying at LSU. I loved him too, but honestly, if he's going to change his mind because of a few press leaks or $, then I don't see the need to mourn his loss.
Seriously, what big coaching hires happen with NO leaks about it? If Miles wasn't expecting this and got totally cheesed about it, then let him stay at LSU.
And at the risk of sounding arrogant, the prestige of being the Michigan Head Coach is worth some money, IMO. I mean really, once you're making a couple mil a year, what difference does it make if you're making $3 mil versus $3.5 mil? If half a mil or a mil means so much to Miles that he'll turn down his alma mater, then I have to question how badly he wanted to coach Michigan in the first place.
Calm down. If it's not Miles (and provided it's not Ferentz or DeBord), then it'll be somebody good not named Miles.

Tenuta unsure of next move
Tech defensive guru acknowledges Michigan rumor
By MIKE KNOBLER
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 12/01/07
Georgia Tech might have lost its second head coach in less than a week with reports that interim coach Jon Tenuta will soon become defensive coordinator at Michigan.
"I don't know yet. I really don't," Tenuta said Saturday after his first practice in his interim role. "There's been rumors before about me going a lot of places."
RELATED STORIES
Saturday's report was more than a rumor, however. It came from ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit, who Tenuta describes as "a friend of mine."
Herbstreit reported Tenuta would be working at Michigan for current LSU coach Les Miles. Tenuta said he had not talked to Miles.
Tenuta has been defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech for six years, and his aggressive, blitzing defenses have ranked among the nation's best the last four seasons.
Tenuta became the interim coach on Monday when Tech fired Chan Gailey after six seasons.

Sometimes you build up your alma mater to be the best job in the world and then when you would get it, you wonder if it can ever live up to your expectations.
Sometimes this happens. I don't think this was a total money play to hold LSU hostage as it was taking a long, hard look at the job and seeing some things that aren't as great as you thought they would be...

The Pelini to Nebraska thing is legit., and I bet so is the Tenuta Miles combo. Tenuta now will probably be dc at LSU. In general, it's easier for a school to look stupid when they go after coaches who are already heading up big time programs. The whole search process is out there in public, and it makes the AD and the school look desperate.

If that story about Tenuta is true, this might not be the package deal we thought. We still may be able to get him with someone else as head coach. I seriously doubt that this is all attributable to any "leaks" today on ESPN; after all, writers all over the country have been saying for days if not weeks that they think Miles was coming here.
This is all about money. Either LSU made him an offer that he didn't want to refuse, even before he talked money with UM, or in informal discussions UM lowballed. My money is on the former.

Furthermore just because we weren't allowed to talk to Miles until after this game doesn't mean that Martin couldn't have talked to his agent. He SHOULD HAVE been in contact with Miles agent. Hell yes you can blame Martin for screwing this up. 100% no, but some of the blame should lay with him. Sorry.

Millertime, I'm with ya man.. If the rumor about Tenuta is true, hell, who cares about Miles. Miles is a great coach, but his nutsy calls on 4th down basically could have cost LSU 3 or more games easily. Tenuta actually came out and stated there is some truth to him coming to Michigan... JACKPOT!!! Hopefully it isn't a crazied fiasco like this one though...

Ok, let's just get one thing clear; No one has any idea what happened. Placing blame on any one person, including Les Miles, Bill Martin, Desmond, Herbstreit, anyone, is so far beyond premature that it's not even funny. I know that this is the internet at all, but it'd be great if people could avoid freaking out and placing blame until someone, somewhere, tells the actual story on this whole situation.

Bertman picked Martin's pocket. The whole "wait until after SEC championship game" shit was a ploy to buy LSU enough time to put up an offer Miles can't refuse.
Don't believe for a second that Miles was made to sign the extension or he wouldn't be able to coach the SEC championship game. The game doesn't mean that much. But LSU did get the deal done before Michigan could formally present its offer.
Score one for Martin. DeBord will be named the new head coach on Monday.

Source: Miles will remain coach at LSU
ESPN.com news services
Updated: December 1, 2007, 1:07 PM ET
LSU coach Les Miles will meet with the media at the Georgia Dome before the SEC Championship Game to announce that he is staying at LSU, a source told ESPN.com.
LSU associate athletic director Herb Vincent said Saturday morning that ESPN reports that Miles had accepted the head coaching position at Michigan were "inaccurate." Miles agreed to a contract extension Saturday with LSU.

Define "ok." I mean, I wanted Miles, but I expected the Michigan Man connection to mean more to him than it looks like it did. I'm not willing to see Michigan contribute to the crazy arms race that seems to occur on a yearly basis in the SEC. I understand that Michigan would have to cough up some coin, but anything more than $2.5-3 million for Miles is too much, IMO. He looks good, but a coach has to have won a championship or two to get Saban money.
So I'm disappointed that Miles isn't coming (apparently), but at the same time we've barely gotten started looking at coaches.
I'll start to feel sad and bitter in a few more weeks if we still haven't signed a guy or if we sign a guy named Ferentz or DeBord.

Here's how it probably happened and it's honestly not nearly as nefarious as everyone wants to believe.
#1. UM search committee comes to agreement that Miles is the guy. Want to offer him job if he is interested. Talk to his agent.
#2. Agent says "He's interested." They talk details. Agent says "Barring unforeseen circumstances I think he's going to respond positively to this." Answer will come after Sat.
#3. Miles/Agent and LSU AD have agreement to give LSU opportunity to respond to any offer. pretty standard stuff. LSU says they'll put something together.
#4. "Source" to Herbstreit/ESPN has been saying for days that Miles is guy. Deal in place, etc. ESPN feels pressure to scoop. Double checks w. source who says it's money barring unforseen circ. ESPN goes to air with it.
#5. LSU says WTF? to agent. Agent says leak is UM side. No deal agreed to, but Miles interested. Do you want to counter? (this is all standard agentry 101-- Miles probably had no knowledge of details).
#6. LSU AD blows UM offer out of the water with massive offer (esp. since Pellini is gone and no heir apparent in cupboard). BUT there's a ticking clock on offer. It goes away after kickoff of SEC game.
#7. Agent relays offer to Miles. Leans on him to take the sure thing (and bigger offer) from LSU. Tells him UM a bad choice since Lloyd and old guard hate your guts and will sabotage you (sorta true, kinda, maybe). Miles consults with wife. She says are you nuts? Take the f-in' money! Miles starts to realize he has it pretty good where he is and UM is going to take a lot of work, esp. with factions not happy with his hiring.
#8. Miles, for once, opts for safe play. Stays at LSU for more money and more love and better food.

Wow.
To be completely honest, I believed from the moment that Lloyd Carr announced his retirement that Les Miles would be the next Michigan coach. Perhaps I am naive, believing all of Miles' Michigan Man mythology and combining that with one's natural pride with their alma mater. This seemed like the ideal job for Miles and the ideal coach for Michigan.
I certainly agree that there are better coaches out there, but for MICHIGAN this was the best combination of success, tradition, and player development. A Buckeyes fan and I agreed that Miles going to Michigan wasn't even a Saban maneuver. It was the natural jump that anyone would have forgiven him for.
Except staying at LSU for the money? Yeah, you're reaching that level of hell where Alabama's coach resides permanently.
We'll know the truth in about 20 minutes, and I am pretty sure that every Ann Arbor fanboy's worst fears will be realized. You're not getting Tenuta. You're not getting Miles. You're the storied program with lots of tradition but egg on your face.

Saw this on rivals board:
Michigan beginning negotiations with new coach
I’m an ex student who once worked in the athletic department. A reliable source from the department told me a few minutes ago that preliminary negotiations have started with Rutgers coach Greg Schiano. He said that Ferentz was target number 1 and Miles was target number 2, both of which received offers and turned them down. Schiano is choice three, and seems likely to accept the job and retain both coordinators.

@darko
I care about the money. It's not the specific amount per se, it's that I don't want my alma mater contributing to the already sick salaries that coaches get, versus whole academic departments. Also, I don't like the idea of an alum coach playing hard to get with his alma mater because of a relatively small amount of money.
I'm not naive, and I understand the whole "athletics is its own business" yada yada, and I knew that we would have to pay more money to Les (or anyone) than we were paying Lloyd.
But please- Michigan is a good job, and it'll pay good money. If Michigan suddenly isn't so attractive because of a half mil or a mil (Michigan was probably going to pay you $2.5 mil), then fuck you.
Seriously, if that little bit of money means so much, then goodbye and we'll go find somebody that wants the job more than you.

I'm sure half the comments in here are reactionary, but I can't help but wonder why the hell everyone's hating on Martin. The guy hires the top X and O's basketball coach in the country, and eight months later he's a douchebag?
Listen, Martin isn't the leak, and he's also not a dictator with complete control...what the individuals do on the search committee can't be monitored 24-7 (unless we have a really really life-like Robo-AD). Chalk this one up to the jackass on the search committee that violated the de facto gag order and chatted with Herbie.

Basically if Miles is walking away from the job, it's hard to want him to come here. He said it was his dream job... But he's staying at LSU? If I had an opportunity at my dream job no increase in salary could make me change my mind. He chose not to coach Michigan, therefore, WE DONT WANT HIM HERE. Plain and simple. As much as we want to blame Herbie for this, I blame whoever his source is inside the Michigan AD. It is Herbie's job to report all news he gets, and when someone in the AD tells you it is a done deal then you have to report it. Whoever this person is just lost us a coach.
The only thing I can think of (so this isn't the end of the world) is that Miles is just doing this to get his team motivated and then the talks will resume tomorrow. I hope that's the case.
It's also possible that we got dirty worked by LSU's AD. "You can talk to Les, but after the SECCG." In the meantime he's been negotiating with him all week. Now we're fucked, no Miles, no Tenuta, and I feel like I just got raped.

I have to say for being so tight-lipped on a lot of things, for it to leak that Michigan wanted to interview Les to me says it was basically an offer on the table.
For him to take a sure bet over something that wasn't so, I dunno if I believe that the Michigan thing was not at least offered. Money obviously talked if this turns out to be true.
Now the press could just be to say that he is not going to comment on anything until after the game. Who knows.

I highly doubt schiano will leave rutgers. Miami offered him a good deal last year, and Miami is to Schiano as Michigan is to Les Miles. It is where his roots are. If he didn't leave rutgers for Miami, he won't leave rutgers for Michigan. He got a brand new contract at rutgers last year, bought a new home, and is starting a family there. He won't be our coach.

LSU's talent is emphatically not overrated. They're a lock for having at least 3 1st round draft picks this year, a year after having 4 1st rounders. That team is stacked more than anyone in the country this year, and it's not especially close.

As much as this could sting Michigan, ESPN and especially Herbstreit look a lot worse. Whatever. If 3 million plus were what it took to keep a guy who has not won the National Title, or even the SEC or the Big 12 championship games glad to see were not paying it. The man will have so much pressure on him next year to perform up to his new contract--should be just as exciting as Saban at 'bama this year!
I'm not too worried about it though. Put his crendentials against other candidates and we should not be that upset. Plus, I don't see the benefit in making a quick hire. Do a more detailed search, and why not put Lane Kiffin's name in the mix. See what he's done at Oakland! Maybe its just wishful thinking on my part.

He's done well at Rutgers, but can anyone say that Rutgers is definitively better than South Florida or UConn right now?

I don't care what tax bracket you're in, if someone offers you almost double your salary it is hard to say no to. The overall impact may not be the same between jumping from 50K to 100K, but it's still mentally and emotionally significant. I am not a "Les for Michigan" fan..but hell..if I was him I would jump like crazy is LSU made an offer that was outta this world.
1) He is not a good game-day coach
2) Why come to UM if he knows he has an icy relationship with Carr (who will still have a presence around UM football)
3) If I could lock up a 30mil contract or whatever....you GOTS to take it
4) LSU owns Louisiana and has a stranglehold on the talent-rich recruiting
5) The pressure at UM would actually be greater than at LSU

I'm sure Bertmann's offered an extension, and I'm sure Michigan has passed an informal offer along to Miles' agent. And it doesn't matter.

@Don: The assumption here is that Les Miles isn't a golddigging materialist. Plus, technically Miles has said a lot of things that would make anyone assume he would coach at Michigan if the opportunity came around. No, he'll never say 'YEAH I WANT TO COACH AT MICHIGAN' while still being employed somewhere. I really don't blame anyone for thinking he would take the job.

elborracho, the wife thing is a good point, but the wife isn't going to be only concerned with money. She's a Michigan grad too, and she might like the idea of raising the kids in A2 as opposed to Baton Rouge. Plus, as the wife of a coach, she understands (and is used to) journeying around to different jobs, but in that case that works in our favor- Michigan and Ann Arbor would be the Final Stop where they could Settle Down. Alright, my last post on the blackness and whiteness.
If a collective group of people see a particular person, say he's black, do a dumb thing, then for that group of people at that time I think it is fairly 'safe' to refer to said guy as 'dumb black guy.' Because we (well, whoever was watching CBS, which was half the million people on this board right now) saw it and are familiar with the reference.
Magnus, trust me, when I walk into my church tomorrow (yes im a pastor) I will NOT grab a cup of coffee, walk over to the men's group and say 'did you see that dumb black guy on CBS yesterday?' Why not? Because they are not familiar with the reference. I get that you wouldn't normally say that, that it normally makes you look ignorant. Here, today, we are familiar with the referent and its much more 'safe.'

Big Jim, in case you didn't hear, that is NOT what went down at the presser. Les Miles essentially came to the podium and said "I am the head coach of LSU, and I'm disappointed that there's speculation about where I'm going, now I'm going to go coach the SEC Champ." That's it- nothing about signing an extension, nothing about going to M.
What I took from it is that he hasn't thought about it either way and hasn't decided either way, and just wants ESPN and CBS to STFU. And I think anyone who tells you otherwise is full of shit.

Do they still offer Poli Sci classes on Game Theory? I can't remember the prof's name, but he was EXCELLENT!, and he didn't just do Game Theory. He was a young guy (back then), so he's probably in his early to mid 40s now. Kimball, I think? I'm not sure.
But I loved that guy, even if I can't remember his name.

And you must be THIS tall to ride this rollercoaster.
Enjoy the moment if you can, M fans, because we won't go through this for another 10+ years.

I loved game theory, but it's listed as Econ 398 now though.

Guy who teaches it now is Czech? Very smart guy, very personable. I've had some interesting conversations with him about the dollars continued weakness and petro countries diversifying their currency reserves with Euros.
Currently in the process of graduating in April and having a damn enjoyable senior year. Was thinking about pursuing an analyst position at some major investment banks in Moscow, after graduation.

@cfaller 96:
def. not suggesting Mrs. Miles or any wife is ONLY about money. Merely speculating on how difficult it would be to walk away from double the money.
Money = status/power to men but generally = security to women. So not slagging any woman for caring about money. Bottom line is that women/wives do tend to be more pragmatic on issues that directly effect the financial home/family. And women are not remotely as prone as men to factor something as vague as loyalty to alma mater as deciding factor.

FWIW for those of you who are on this comment board and haven't checked out mgoblog, Brian has posted the verbatim of the presser.

Here it is:
Please read this and then let's move on...
Q: We're on the floor of the Georgia Dome with LSU head coach Les Miles. Coach, let's get it over with one last time. You are the head football coach at LSU right now. You will be the head football coach at next season. Right or wrong?
Les Miles: "Absolutely. I'm staying at LSU. This is a place I want to be. This is a place my family is very comforatable. This school has everything. It has an opportunity at victory and competing at the highest level. Personally, professionally, socially, we have friends here. I respect the young men that I coach. Anybody that I have signed, when I tell them I am going to be here, I was sincere. I'm the head coach at LSU and I'm going to be the head coach at LSU."
