i'm not sure the $4 million is such a huge problem either. for one, it might not end up being that much (beilein went from $2.5m to $1.5m). if we can knock it down to $3 million and give rich rod a 6-8 year deal, that's only an extra $400,000 or so per year. a lot of money, but not outrageous.

The current players on the team are not used to a spread offense, they are used to our pro style. We don't really have a mobile QB, and we recruited some stud running backs that might decommit if they aren't going to get the ball.
Once RR gets his players in here I would be confident, but could be see the fall of Michigan for a couple years before things get better? That be crazy.

Tom Brady/Peyton Manning run the most devastating spread offenses in all of football. Both are statues... actually, that's being unkind to statues.
Not all spreads are the same, and not all require the zone read option.
There are more flavors of the spread than ice creams at Baskin Robbins. You don't have to have Pat White to make it work. Petrino ran a power run version of it at Louisville with Brian Brohm. Rich Rod has done it with dropback passers.
This is what matters.... WVU gets okay talent. Not great. Beyond the Jet Set - Slaton, White, Devine - they have some pretty mediocre players. Inserting Michigan's talent into RichRod's brain would be EXPLOSIVE.
Seriously. I've seen six or seven WVU games over the past couple years... Dudes are WIDE OPEN all over the field.

And by the way, samsoccer7, I was a bit leery of Michigan running the spread offense as well. And I'm sick of people talking about a "modern" offense as if a spread offense is the only modern offense that exists. (Note: Michigan may run four-wide-receiver sets, but we've never run a true spread offense: the difference is in the size of our offensive line splits, and the reads and options the quarterback is supposed to take.)
But thinking about Mallett and McGuffie, they'd be totally comfortable in a spread, and that might be the best way to use their talents.
I'd still hope we're capable of playing defense and controlling possessions when we need to.

A highly-recruited linebacker that OSU and Bama walked away from after he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery (he and his buddies robbed the Smoothie King with a fake gun), he masterminded the deal and sent in his friend to do it. (By a quirk of Maryland law, this could have carried a 15-year sentence, but is still characterized as a misdemeanor.) Les Miles is an offensive guy. Specifically O-line.
Does anyone know whether RR's contract has a non-compete clause in it? If not, they cannot stop him from taking the Michigan job. The only thing they could do is sue him for breach of contract and money damages in the amount of $4mm. And, one could argue that the "buyout" is an unenforceable penalty. Whether or not that is a winner in court, I'm not sure, but I'd bet it's enought to horse trade the amount down in settlement discussions.
Rich Rod, great hire. And makes sense if indeed English is to remain on board. Offensive guy revamps the O-staff, and leaves most the defense to English. With a new S+C program, this could lead to great success.

RR will (presumably) have the opportunity to form a new staff, and he'll either take his guy (meh), or he'll use the opportunity to get Ron English (better) or go headhunt for the best DC out there (best). To answer the question, WFV really kicked it into high gear after White and Slaton arrived, but I think that RR has used that to catapult WFV into another level (in recruiting, prestige, etc.). If RR were to stay at WFV post-Slaton/White, I feel pretty confident that he would keep the dominance going.
So no, it's NOT just the Pat White/Steve Slaton show anymore, even though that's how it all started.

You're ignoring the fact that Slaton and White weren't highly regarded recruits coming out of high school. RichRod had a hand in turning them into the weapons they are today.

Great blog. Out of curiosity, why is it that you never mention Gary Pinkel? I will concede that the manner in which this search has been conducted has been shameful. However, Martin's wishlist for the next Michigan coach does make some sense and I believe Pinkel- disregarding Les Miles- embodies these qualities the most.
First, he has midwest ties growing up in Ohio. Second, he coached at Toledo so he understands the OSU/UM rivalry and knows the recruiting landscape. Third, Due to his age (55 I believe) this would likely be his last stop. Further, he does not have a reputation for being a carpetbagger/opportunist. Finally, the guy wins! If you apply the stassen data (I've been paying attention, see!) his overall records at both Toledo and Missouri are substantially better than his predecessors.
Those that disagree will likely point to perhaps his rumored "gruff" attitude, or the fact that it took him some time to turn things around at Missouri. Nonetheless, his overall body of work indicates that he would be a great coach. He would bring in a dynamic offense, maintain Michigan's winning attitude, and lead with integrity.
I'm sure if Miles is talking, it's only to offer his help on the coaching search.

Part of me does not like it. I would love it if we ran the spread. I think that with the talent Michigan draws, and even with the talent in place, it would be near unstoppable.
I wouldn't love it, however, if we did it with a guy who is comfortable recruiting such troubled kids. That really, really bothers me. I know that would be unlikely to happen at Michigan but his past actions reflect on him and the university that decides to hire him.
I realize that no one's perfect and that there's going to be reservations about everyone. If we hire him I'll ultimately be o.k. with it. Just voicing some concerns.

Problem players and discipline issues over the long term are things to worry about, and how a coach handles these issues over the long term are things to look at. Don't spout off a flukey one-time thing (Lazear) as if it indicates a problem, and as far as I can tell Noel Devine is a good kid and has NOT been a problem at WFV.
There is no long term indication- none- that RichRod runs a "loose" program that likes to recruit "thugs." I don't mind the one-time things as long as they remain one-time things.

There are certain "one-time things" (your words) that say a lot about people because the situations only presented themselves one time. RR, possessing the facts and knowing that his actions reflected upon himself and WVU, chose to recruit Lazear. "Long-term" and "flukey" don't have anything to do with something like that.

Look, I have no idea what went down on that, and under the condition that it only happened one time, I don't care. So yes, we disagree here. There are no litmus tests, IMO, when it comes to recruiting "morals." Some kids are good kids that got into trouble, some kids are bad kids that have managed to evade accountability. Recruiting is and always will be a crapshoot, and occasionally mistakes will be made...by everyone, including Saint Lloyd.
I'm tempted to go check to see if Michigan ever recruited someone who was under criminal investigation, because I bet there was at least one guy. Kelly Baraka, maybe?
Besides, there's a difference between being investigated for armed robbery, and convicted of armed robbery. Maybe RichRod made an error in judgment in believing the kid wasn't guilty, but whatever- as long as it doesn't devolve into a pattern, then I feel safe thinking that RichRod learned from his mistake with Lazear.

I say he announces up or down on Monday or Tuesday and, if coming, comes after the bowl. We are entering the dead zone for recruiting so there is no need to rush over now. This could be good timing and a good hire.

I think that any coach adapting our offensive system (pro-style) over their own is extremely unlikely. If Rodriguez comes in, he'll try to run his system ASAP. He may wait a year or two with Mallett, but I imagine he'd recruit his own style of players.

I'd love to see Mallett with a shotgun-spread. His arm will pick everyone apart, as long as he learns to play smart. Plus, speedsters like Brown and McGuffie are going to make the run possible, and potentially effective, even from the spread.

Personally, I'm excited at the opportunity. I am from West Virginia, and the popular belief was that once he got that new contract, he was at WVU for good and wasn't even looking elsewhere.
The mere fact that he is willing to talk and feel the situation out is exciting. He wouldn't be there if there wasn't some interest.

First of all, MSC, BM, and RR cannot apparate - they have to travel to Toledo, they can't warp. In order to travel, there are drivers, pilots, office personell, and random-ass people on the street. All of their pictures are public record. Any of these people can reveal the meeting as well.

Cfaller: First, I think Rodriguez would be a home run hire. Maybe Dave thinks so, too. Second, Lazear was at Walt Whitman High School, just a couple miles from where I live, so some of us had front row seats on a story you can google. I don't know the details of RRod's recruitment of Lazear, and yes a good coach can help a guy turn his life around yada yada, but if RRod comes to Michigan, Dave and I and perhaps a few others will hope that he doesn't offer scholarships to guys after knowing for a fact that the guy materially participated (Lazear was the driver) in robbing a Smoothie King at gunpoint.

There are some concerns about his accepting a kid who was a felon, and some concerns about how the system will work at Michigan given the talent currently there.
FWIW, I think both concerns are legit, but he's better than any name that's been seriously discussed since Schiano said no.
Given who is out there, the sense of most people here is that this would be a great hire.

It's cool. My source suck anyways. Everytime they interview a new coach, he says "[Insert Name] is a done deal." He was great to get the know on who they are talking to/about, but he jumps the gun every time. So basically, it gives me an extra few hours, or day to be excited, ---until it hits the main press---only to have hopes crushed later.
He didnt tell me anything about RR, but he hasnt been saying shit lately, anyways.

I think that Rodriguez is, inarguably, a brilliant offensive mind. He's essentially invented the spread idea that's all over college football now. He clearly recruits talented players (possibly sketchy ones). I don't think he really has anything to do with defense, however. So claims that we'll run a 3-3-5 are, I think, unfounded, because that scheme is more a result of WVU's DC than it is Rodriguez.

we really had Les Miles ranked above Stoops and Meyer? Please tell me that's only because Stoops and Meyer would never take the job, because they're both better coaches than Miles.
I think a lot of times when coaches bolt one university for another, people start questioning their loyalty to the university they were presently employed at. But if Rich Rodriguez leaves to go to Michigan it wouldn't be like Petrino interviewing every year and finally leaving the Falcons are Saban's debacle with LSU and then Miami.
I think that Rodriguez is fiercely loyal to WV. Last year he turned down the Alabama job. But I think he realized that he can't win a NC at WV. Think about it. If he was going to do it any year it would have been this year. One of the best offenses in the country built on players that he recruited. And if there was ever a year of parity in college football, this was it. There were no dominant teams this year, and the race was so open that a one loss team from the Big East was a front runner for a spot in the BCS title game.
And then his players choked. I think RR was heartbroken they're not playing for the NC. And I think he realizes that he will never win a NC at WV. If there ever was a year to do it. This was it. So he walks away, as White and Slaton bolt for the NFL, and comes to Michigan. That's not disloyalty to WV. That's realizing uve taken a program as far as it will go.
JD - I don't think ANYONE in their right mind had Miles above Meyer/Stoops.

Take it from an SEC fan--Alabama is NOT a good job because every coach is compared immediately to the immortal Bear and found wanting. And the fans are not very nice to those who don't perform. I can understand why RR wouldn't want to take over that ship when he had a job which was probably just as good moneywise (at that point no one expected Alabama to offer the salary Saban got) and which was in his home state where he would get lots of attention just for winning at all. I see Michigan as a totally different deal, a real step up in every way and not the unrealistic expectations as at Alabama. And I agree with LSUALUM87--Toolame was good only because of RR, not because of Tommy B. That ought to be evident seeing the relative difference in success of Clemson and WVU. It would be a fabulous hire but I just hope you let him hire assistants and run it his way.

Schiano had a decent year last year, but Rutgers isn't exactly a BCS caliber team rite now. Miles is a coach of a team has the most talent of any team in teh country, but is the least disciplined. Lousiana has some of the best prospects in HS football annually; what 5 stud prospects are coming from HS in WV. And come on, Miles inherited a team that was coming off of a BCS title a year prior. On a neutral field with the same talent, RR would outcoach Miles anyday.

i was talking to my buddy (a tosu fan - hey growing up in ohio it's hard to find non-tosu fans) and he got a text from his friend (a wvu alum) telling him to enjoy putting up with dickrod. i think it's fantastic that we could end up with a coach we could call dickrod.

The financial adviser stuff is probably true enough. He just didn't include that there were other people present as well.

Rich Rodriguez will be the next coach at Michigan. Buddy of mine in Tecumseh knows Scott Loefler's (sp) girlfriend and Scott was eating at a restaurant there. He got a call and told her that RR will be the next coach.

Of course, it is a smart way to be misleading but not lie if he considers his attorney, future employers, (Wife!!!), to be his financial advisors.
