Top 10 Reasons Coaches Might Turn Down the Michigan Job.
10) Who wants to live in the North?
9) Who wants to coach in the (sometimes) cold/rainy north; especially if you use the spread offense.
8) No conference playoffs
7) Michigan continues to schedule tougher non-conference games (Utah, nd, Oregon, etc.) rather than all those cupcakes making a run at the MNC more difficult.
6) High academic standards make recruiting harder.
5) Too much pressure (a single 8-4 season and you’re dog shit!)
4) You don’t want to be the one to “out asshole” Petrino/Saban.
3) Win With Integrity
2) Bo

Hmm..Rich Rod...I like it I think. I know everyone looks at the Pitt loss and says No...however, look what he did with our own Ryan Mundy, he looked 100 times better in 1 yr at WVU than 4 at Michigan.
Rich Rod I think would bring this offense around real fast. Mallett would be comfortable in the gun and the D would finally play against a Spread team in Practice all day.
His offense would also suit McGuffie greatly I think and Mallett is already a thousand times the thrower that Pat White will ever be...

Not touting Grobe as an option at all, but I like his mindset (and how he's handling the 'pressure') with regard to all the rumors. This, from the freep:
"Asked Thursday if he had been contacted by anyone associated with Michigan, Grobe said, "It's gone on with Nebraska. It's gone on with Arkansas. Now it's going on with Michigan. I've just got to get out of all that stuff. There's no comment I can make that helps the situation.
"The only thing I can say is the important thing for me right now is to be focused on Wake Forest and trying to play UConn in a bowl game and get us a win.
"I don't know how to respond to that stuff anymore. It takes on a life of its own, whether you're interested or not interested. Schools do their own searches. You never know where you are in those things.
"I can't stop the rumors," Grobe said."
^^Seriously. Just say that. And you're done.

While this process of rumors fascinates and has even during the height of the Miles affair consumed too much of my time, I do not have my hopes up for this one.
If they pull it off, it is a great hire. if not, I am in the same place I was this morning. Thinking that Brady Hoke will be the next HC and hoping that he will at least fire Mike Debord and Gittleson.

First, after the Schiano affair, Martin and MSC would not be there if they didn't have a reliable sign that he was more than interested.
Second, MSC wouldn't be there if Martin hadn't exposed himself and the University to national ridicule. When your boss takes over the biggest project of your career, you are a dead man walking.

'Rodriguez is easily one of the top ten coaches in college football. The talent level he has at West Virginia is nowhere near what most people would expect. The Mountaineers have only had one top-30 recruiting class since Rodriguez took over. Still, Rodriguez has managed to turn the WVU into a perennial top-ten program. The program has reached new heights in just a few short years. Rodriguez is on track to lead the Mountaineers to their third-straight 11-win season. '

Not being critical, just making a point that not everything south of Columbus is plantation country.
In fact, if I recall my history, WV split from VA over the Civil War (didn't want to secede). Northern WV is much more connected to Big10 country than SEC land (adjacent to W. PA and OHIO). In fact, WVU has been rumored to be a possible candidate for the mythical 12th member of the Big10.

i'm not sure the $4 million is such a huge problem either. for one, it might not end up being that much (beilein went from $2.5m to $1.5m). if we can knock it down to $3 million and give rich rod a 6-8 year deal, that's only an extra $400,000 or so per year. a lot of money, but not outrageous.

Just more than a year ago, Rodriguez was thought to be headed to Alabama to take over as coach of the Crimson Tide. But he remained at his alma mater, where he has built a 57-18 record over six seasons. The Mountaineers will face Pitt in the Fiesta Bowl.

All this is that JB recommended BM and MSC talk to RR about good potential coaches. We're just going to interview great coaches until February, then English will get the job. LOLOL, jk.
I honestly think they have a coach in the bag. These rumors are just to avoid putting heat on him. It could be Meyer, could be Miles, could be Stoops, who knows, it could be Hoke. However, we can't really hire another coach with Carr coaching the Capital One bowl. So, another 3 weeks until we get answers.

I like the fact that we would be getting a proven winner. However, I would be slightly concerned about the first couple years under Rodriguez. The current players on the team are not used to a spread offense, they are used to our pro style. We don't really have a mobile QB, and we recruited some stud running backs that might decommit if they aren't going to get the ball.
Once RR gets his players in here I would be confident, but could be see the fall of Michigan for a couple years before things get better? That be crazy.

Look at it this way:
Eventually one of these rumors will actually be true!!
Why not this one?
Here are the top ten reasons:
1) he is not Brady Hoke;
2) Morgantown is landlocked, making it less likely that RR sails;
3) Martin really just doing due diligence on Dave Wanstadt's mustache;
4) While Lloyd agrees with his choking against Pitt policy he does not agree with his offense is not a disease policy;
5) would actually be good news;
6) no one puts Mike Debord in a corner;
7) Martin got confused and thought he was meeting with Barry Alvarez;

Rodriguez played under Nehlen at WVU. Nehlen was an assistant under Bo. Rodriguez was supposedly one of Bo's favorites.
So, there is a Michigan connection.
And, maybe this is the only job - because of those connections - that Rodriguez would leave his alma mater for.

I'm honestly scared to change our offense too much. Flame away, but I prefer the hammering offense and stifling defense. I'm not saying rock rock rock punt, but a spread offense? That kinda scares me a little, b/c it makes the defense just say "fuck it the offense will score on the next possession." I don't know, afraid of changing the basic principal of the UM offense.
That attitude represents everything that is wrong with Michigan football right now. Too scared to make a change, even though the status quo sucks? WTF is wrong with you?

Don't want to read all these comments, but this talk of "Mallett isn't Pat White" stuff is stupid.
Tom Brady/Peyton Manning run the most devastating spread offenses in all of football. Both are statues... actually, that's being unkind to statues.

There are more flavors of the spread than ice creams at Baskin Robbins. You don't have to have Pat White to make it work. Petrino ran a power run version of it at Louisville with Brian Brohm. Rich Rod has done it with dropback passers.
This is what matters.... WVU gets okay talent. Not great. Beyond the Jet Set - Slaton, White, Devine - they have some pretty mediocre players. Inserting Michigan's talent into RichRod's brain would be EXPLOSIVE.
Seriously. I've seen six or seven WVU games over the past couple years... Dudes are WIDE OPEN all over the field.

And by the way, samsoccer7, I was a bit leery of Michigan running the spread offense as well. And I'm sick of people talking about a "modern" offense as if a spread offense is the only modern offense that exists. (Note: Michigan may run four-wide-receiver sets, but we've never run a true spread offense: the difference is in the size of our offensive line splits, and the reads and options the quarterback is supposed to take.)
But thinking about Mallett and McGuffie, they'd be totally comfortable in a spread, and that might be the best way to use their talents.
I'd still hope we're capable of playing defense and controlling possessions when we need to.

I would argue this about RRod not being able to hit the homerun. Talent catches up with you. Based upon my calculations here:
http://www.logictimes.com/Blue/
R...Ruminations.htm
...he does not get into the top 30 recruiting over the last seven years. In fact, my raw data goes up to 34 and he is not in that list. That means his average star per recruit is < 2.65 (Purdue is 34th at 2.65).
He can't accomplish all he wants to accomplish with that. He also can't run the table too often with such thin depth.
He is a great coach.

Here is my problem with Rodriguez - what was he doing giving a scholarship to Pat Lazear? A highly-recruited linebacker that OSU and Bama walked away from after he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery (he and his buddies robbed the Smoothie King with a fake gun), he masterminded the deal and sent in his friend to do it. (By a quirk of Maryland law, this could have carried a 15-year sentence, but is still characterized as a misdemeanor.) This is a kid from a wealthy part of Montgomery County, Maryland who already had a juvie strike against him for credit card fraud. Here is a link to some of the WashPost articles on it -

While I agree that was a terrible loss. They were up against Lou Holtz giving them a pregame speech on ESPN using magic tricks, and Mark May in a great 1980's Pitt Jersey. No mortal could defeat that.

I am just trying to help you UM fans out, but I'm sure we will be able to hear your moans and groans down here in Morgantown. Good riddance RR!

i'd even let him keep the current coordinators. i think english is pretty decent actually (not a fan of his work vs. the spread, but also not a fan of the defensive players we threw out there the fist two games this year). and he could keep debord for this year since richrod could just call all his own plays. debord could just sit up in the booth and eat twinkies for all i care.

Anybody bashing this potential hire needs to get their head examined. Better yet, they need to donate their head to science. Not once they die, I mean now. Who the fluck cares what OSU fans think about Rich Rod? Do you think they fear Miles, Schiano, etc....? F No! They have their program rolling, hell we didn't even fear OSU a few years ago and Carr was our coach.

Whatever. You're right. WVU should get rid of him. I'm sure that just like Huggins, there's a big name coaching prospect who happens to be a WVU alum, that will come in and take over the program and even elevate it.
Woops. That guy's name is Rich Rodriguez.

Ooops. Fuck the "OSU's isn't scared of RR" talk. OSU has no reason to be scared of whoever we hire. They've had their nazi boots on our throats for pretty much 7 years now.
Michigan has to put the fear back in OSU by beating them on the field. RichRod can do that.

That would be Rose:

(2) Ron Zook (nope)
Sugar
(3) June Jones (doubtful)
(4) Mark Richt (maybe?)
Fiesta
(5) Rich Rodriguez (no way WVU lets us snatch another coach, uh, wel . . . maybe)
(6) Bob Stoops (a kid can dream, can't he?)
Orange
(7) Mangino (insert "fat joke" here)
(8) Frank Beamer (I'd be down with this hire, but no way he leaves his Alma Mater)
Cotton (is this a major bowl?)
(9) Interim Hog Caller or Petrino (nope)
(10) Gary Pinkle (maybe?)
Gator (ditto)
(11) Al Groh (don't want)
(12) Mike Leach (maybe?)
Capital One (ditto)
(13) Pope Urban (PLEASE!!)
(14) Retiree (n/a)
Outback (ditto)
(15) Phil Fulmer (HELL NO)
(16) Brent (Brett?) Beilema (Beilema and Beilein on the same campus?? No.)
Chick-Fil-A (ditto)
(17) Tommy Bowden (no)
(18) Tommy Tuberville (didn't we just get rid of a Tommy? Might be a n ice hire, but not likely)
BCS Championship
(19) Vest (nope)
(20) Hat (no, apparently)
Meineke Car Care Bowl (not a major bowl)
(21) Randy Edsall (maybe?)
(22) Jim Grobe (maybe?)

Does anyone know whether RR's contract has a non-compete clause in it? If not, they cannot stop him from taking the Michigan job. The only thing they could do is sue him for breach of contract and money damages in the amount of $4mm. And, one could argue that the "buyout" is an unenforceable penalty. Whether or not that is a winner in court, I'm not sure, but I'd bet it's enought to horse trade the amount down in settlement discussions.

I think this "the coach said he wasn't interested" stuff is pretty ridiculous. The coach has nothing to gain by saying "oh yea, I'm totally thinking about it". At that point they still had games to coach to get them through the regular season. He would be a fool to say anything else.

Let's go over the pat responses that a coach must make - reporter with no basis and with no authority to offer the job, "Coach X, any interest in the Michigan job? You are rumored to be a top candidate" Coach X: "I laugh at you. That's crazy."
Athletic director and university president: "Coach X, we want you to come to Michigan, let's talk dollars and years, etc." Coach X: "I'm listening. . ."

I'm also late to the party so I haven't been able to follow all the comments, so if this has been asked and answered, I apologize. Prior to the Pat White/Steve Slaton era at WVU, what was RichRod's reputation as a coach? I'm certainly excited because he's a big name, but was he highly regarded before he got those two studs? I'm just hoping his value isn't inflated because he's got two awesome players running his offense...

Is this really happening? Really?!?
I am NOT worried about the defensive side of the ball. RR will (presumably) have the opportunity to form a new staff, and he'll either take his guy (meh), or he'll use the opportunity to get Ron English (better) or go headhunt for the best DC out there (best). And with RR, I'm willing to take a leap of faith that he'll do what he can to upgrade, and not display excessive loyalty to anyone.

Does RR have a history before his two good offensive players?
Look up what he did at Tulane. Probably never heard of that. This dude makes something great with the tools he has, and has always done that.
He's never had a stock of 4 stars to work with before. What he does with 2 and 3 star guys is just plain sick.

To answer the question, WFV really kicked it into high gear after White and Slaton arrived, but I think that RR has used that to catapult WFV into another level (in recruiting, prestige, etc.). If RR were to stay at WFV post-Slaton/White, I feel pretty confident that he would keep the dominance going.
So no, it's NOT just the Pat White/Steve Slaton show anymore, even though that's how it all started.

Rodriguez left Glenville State at the end of the 1996 season to serve as assistant coach, offensive coordinator, and quarterback coach for Tulane University from 1997 to 1998, under head coach Tommy Bowden. Rodriguez was essential in Tulane's success, including their 12-0 season in Rodriguez's last season at Tulane, mainly for his spread offense with quarterback Shaun King.

You're ignoring the fact that Slaton and White weren't highly regarded recruits coming out of high school. RichRod had a hand in turning them into the weapons they are today.
Also, are you so sure post-Slaton/White WFV but still with RichRod in the future will return to the 8-4 levels they saw prior to Slaton/White? Really? Noel Devine isn't going to dominate?
RichRod's success is NOT due to Pat White and Steve Slaton. He's good.

Dear Brian,
Great blog. Out of curiosity, why is it that you never mention Gary Pinkel? I will concede that the manner in which this search has been conducted has been shameful. However, Martin's wishlist for the next Michigan coach does make some sense and I believe Pinkel- disregarding Les Miles- embodies these qualities the most.
First, he has midwest ties growing up in Ohio. Second, he coached at Toledo so he understands the OSU/UM rivalry and knows the recruiting landscape. Third, Due to his age (55 I believe) this would likely be his last stop. Further, he does not have a reputation for being a carpetbagger/opportunist. Finally, the guy wins! If you apply the stassen data (I've been paying attention, see!) his overall records at both Toledo and Missouri are substantially better than his predecessors.
Those that disagree will likely point to perhaps his rumored "gruff" attitude, or the fact that it took him some time to turn things around at Missouri. Nonetheless, his overall body of work indicates that he would be a great coach. He would bring in a dynamic offense, maintain Michigan's winning attitude, and lead with integrity.

I don't want to rain on parades, but...
Part of me does not like it. I would love it if we ran the spread. I think that with the talent Michigan draws, and even with the talent in place, it would be near unstoppable.
I wouldn't love it, however, if we did it with a guy who is comfortable recruiting such troubled kids. That really, really bothers me. I know that would be unlikely to happen at Michigan but his past actions reflect on him and the university that decides to hire him.
I realize that no one's perfect and that there's going to be reservations about everyone. If we hire him I'll ultimately be o.k. with it. Just voicing some concerns.

BTW, the Michigan football coach maybe the highest paid employee but $2-4 millions is still a drop in the bucket compared to the schools funding and endowment.

"We recently put a strong contract in place with Rich. We made a strong commitment to him and he made a strong commitment to us."
Later, Pastilong said he put in a call to Rodriguez but that had not been returned as of 5 p.m.

I know each program has problem children and coaches -- I said as much in my initial post. But to my knowledge Carr never recruited a kid who was being prosecuted for armed robbery (Lazear) or already had two kids by two women (Devine). Euguene only had one. ;)

@Musket Rebellion
I am not sure MSC caused Bill Martin to do anything.
The above comments sounded as if MSC was actively involved in the head coaching search. If that is the case then what is the point of having an athletic director?
Furthermore, there have been plenty of comments implying that MSC has pushed for Ferentz. Her role should be welcoming the new coach to the university. Concerning the search, she should trust the AD to perform his delegated responsibility. If she does not trust the athletic director to handle the job on his own then he should be fired.

According to his contract, if he terminates his employment with West Virginia after Aug. 31, 2007, he will have to pay $2 million to West Virginia before Aug. 31, 2008 and then the next $2 million must be paid before that day in 2011.

The hostility is based on the assumption that you think Michigan and Saint Lloyd run a "cleaner" program than anyone else's, and somehow a few problem kids here and there is somehow a big fucking red flag. It's not.
Problem players and discipline issues over the long term are things to worry about, and how a coach handles these issues over the long term are things to look at. Don't spout off a flukey one-time thing (Lazear) as if it indicates a problem, and as far as I can tell Noel Devine is a good kid and has NOT been a problem at WFV.
There is no long term indication- none- that RichRod runs a "loose" program that likes to recruit "thugs." I don't mind the one-time things as long as they remain one-time things.

This is not going to happen. The guy's got a $4 million buyout. Remember what Martin said about Beilein's $2.5 million buyout?
"[The buyout] never came up because there is no way Michigan was going to pay it."
Beilein also burned WVU for Michigan, so you can be sure that they won't budge on Rich Rod's buyout. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that his AD (who seems pretty annoyed at RR's interest in U-M, let alone the fact that he learned of it from the press) will tell RR not to expect a reduction in the buyout or permission to coach WVU in their bowl game if he leaves for Michigan.

cfaller: you're right -- you are assuming that I think that Lloyd & Co. run a cleaner program than on average; that Michigan has fewer problem kids than elsewhere. But I do think that RR's actions with respect to Lazear put up a red flag. On that, I respectfully have to disagree you with you.
I don't think it's fair to talk about "long-term" and "flukey" with respect to something like the recruitment of Lazear. This isn't a normal kid that turned out to be a headcase. This is a guy that RR knew was being prosecuted for robbery -- and recruited anyways.
There are certain "one-time things" (your words) that say a lot about people because the situations only presented themselves one time. RR, possessing the facts and knowing that his actions reflected upon himself and WVU, chose to recruit Lazear. "Long-term" and "flukey" don't have anything to do with something like that.
It looks like we're going to have to agree to disagree as to the import of RR's actions with respect to Lazear. Best wishes.

Why does a man leave the HC position at his alma mater when he has no ties to Michigan? If it's about money, how soon before we lose him to someone else?
And is that the plan? Hire someone who may be mercenary enough to leave in a couple years and then see if a certain hat-wearing gentleman in the Bayou is available?
I'm just throwin' spitballs here and seeing what sticks.

@Dave
So now it's just recruiting Lazear that's the problem? Just Lazear, and that makes RichRod unacceptable in your book? Huh.
Look, I have no idea what went down on that, and under the condition that it only happened one time, I don't care. So yes, we disagree here. There are no litmus tests, IMO, when it comes to recruiting "morals." Some kids are good kids that got into trouble, some kids are bad kids that have managed to evade accountability. Recruiting is and always will be a crapshoot, and occasionally mistakes will be made...by everyone, including Saint Lloyd.
I'm tempted to go check to see if Michigan ever recruited someone who was under criminal investigation, because I bet there was at least one guy. Kelly Baraka, maybe?
Besides, there's a difference between being investigated for armed robbery, and convicted of armed robbery. Maybe RichRod made an error in judgment in believing the kid wasn't guilty, but whatever- as long as it doesn't devolve into a pattern, then I feel safe thinking that RichRod learned from his mistake with Lazear.
And that's my point. You want to hold one-time mistakes against a guy regardless of the context, I regard them as flukes that happen to everybody. So, using your standard...how could Lloyd hire and keep a guy on staff whose family has a history of drunken disorderly behavior? How dare he?!?!?

RR won't go to the pros because he can't coach their style. The pros won't run the multi-option spread because it endangers their mega millions stars. That may even make it hard to recruit NFL style quarterbacks. But we are a college team. Bring him on.
