It has more to do with the whole "no way we can't hire that guy, his players are thugs" meme that seems to float around here every now and then. We have problems with players too, and we don't necessarily hold Lloyd responsible for that.
We should not be crossing coaches off our list because of "discipline problems" (cough Marvin Lewis Brian Kelly cough). They happen here too, and with the coaching staff, no less!

Don't be daft. If you want to disagree that the coaching search should NOT dominate every topic of Michigan football, then say it. It's fine to disagree, so say it proudly.
But don't pretend to not understand who's being rejected because of disciplinary/ethical problems on these threads. I already mentioned two. Brian Kelly and Marvin Lewis. I'm sure others have been knocked down on these threads (Larry Coker perhaps?). Get real.
And don't pretend that the disciplinary problem with a member of Lloyd's coaching staff doesn't relate to the objections others have raised about the disciplinary problems with other coaches' players. Of course it relates- the moral standards that we supposedly apply to other coaches during our search might not feel so good when we apply those standards to ourselves (Lloyd). And if we don't apply it to ourselves, then we're just hypocrites.
To be that obtuse seems kind of willful, IMO. Just say you don't want to talk about the coaching search, and be done with it. But don't pretend you don't see the connection.

No prob. To be clear, I don't believe problem players (or for that matter problem assistants!) should be held against the coach UNLESS AND UNTIL it becomes a pattern.
But some people do believe that stuff should apply and be held against Coaching Candidate X, in which case I'm simply applying their beliefs to someone who I presume they believe is perfect- Saint Lloyd.
Problem players and problem staff appear at every program with every coach. How it's dealt with over the long term is really a better measure of the coach's standards, IMO. And Lloyd's been fine in that aspect, as have been many, many viable coaching candidates (cough Marvin Lewis Brian Kelly cough).
That's all I was saying.

Maurice Clarett and Troy Smith's apparent misgivings stem from him taking money, that is dirty to me. If they got drunk and got in a bar fight, I don't perceive that as dirty. Having guys in drunken bar fights isn't a big deal to me, it's college, shit happens. When it's murder and weapons, then it's a different story. Lloyd hasn't had either of those things (ncaa infractions or murder/weapons cases). (IMo, that is what makes DeBord scary to me. His players committed a murder, not Kelly's. Kelly just talked about it in the aftermath).

There's a HUGE difference between Marvin Lewis's thugs and Lloyd Carr's "thugs."
Marvin Lewis gives his thugs second and third and fourth and fifth chances.
Butler was kicked off the team for a while. Arrington was in danger of the same fate. Richards and Sears were kicked off.
The last thing I knew, Chris Henry was STILL playing for the Bengals and Marvin Lewis was still drafting players with questionable character.
Andy Moeller is a grown ass man. As far as I know, this has never happened with him before. And, frankly, even if he's not fired/suspended before the bowl game, he'll probably be out of a job in about three weeks.

I think the importance lies not with what the players do under any given coach, but how that coach responds based on what the nature of the infraction is...does he make a conscious decision to play a criminal to help his cause (i.e. winning football games) a la Tom Osborne or does he do the right thing?

Lewis could control the players, he could show some balls and discipline them. He doesn't, he wants them to like him.
The difference between a good college coach and a good pro coach can be summed up by what the Falcons said about Petrino:
A good pro coach makes his guys like them, lets them live their life. A good college coach makes sure he's in control of them. Lewis is the former.

No, that was NOT an imposter (who does that, anyway?), that was me. Who cares if chunks and elnolewis don't post anything of value? I don't either, and neither do 90% of the commenters here. It's an internet comment board, not a PhD dissertation! We come here to vent, argue, piss, and rumormonger...just like every other internet board.

I would tend to disagree with equating all of the Bengals' thugs with Andy Moeller.
Moeller is 43 years old.
A lot of the Bengals players are/were young players when they got in trouble.
Put me down as also wanting chunks the hobo and enlo to stay as well. I have written one PhD thesis and proof-read dozens of others; I would much rather read chunks and enlo. I come to this boad to enjoy the humor as much as anything.
Even Shakespeare had his comic releif scenes. And yes, I do realize that chunks and enlo are no William Shakespeare, but, newflash, neither is anyone else here.
