Hey DOMER, so Sunday I flew down to South Bend. I was pretty high (altitude, not Manningham-style), and fast, so I stomped on the rudder real hard and slipped the Cirrus for all it's worth. This was a three-leg XC flight, so the tanks were full. I looked out the window and saw a stream of 100LL pouring out the wingtip fuel vent. I dumped gas all over TD Jesus! I am more excited about Newsome. I am excited about an offense that can both pass and run effectively. RR's offense at WVU worked really well, but Pat White isn't that great a passer. I guess if it works then keep doing it, but I like more dimensions to my offense. In any case, coach knows best.

Oh, I don't know about that. While I'm sure RichRod's pretty satisfied with 2 QB commits, I think he'd still be open to getting one more in there. I imagine he'd make space for Forcier.
Yes, it might create a problem in the next year or so, but the situation at QB is dire enough that signing 3 would not be a tragedy for anyone involved, including the kids.
I agree that it's unlikely that a third QB is coming, but I wouldn't entirely rule it out either.

My nominee for comment of the day. nice work.
Dex,
I'm not only happy, I'm f-ing ecstatic. The idea of adding Forcier is just a bonus, and the results of the past week show that Rod will definitely be recruiting some major talent. Now maybe all of the "What happens when he starts recruiting 3 star guys like he did at WV crowd" will shut the hell up. that argument was asinine from the beginning.

But TOM Beaver has been hinting very strongly that UM may still land Tits Forcier. His hint today, though, has me thinking Tits is either headed to UM or...PSU.

I'm not saying we wouldn't "want" Forcier.
BUT, we're in a situation where we need pure number all over the D-Line and in the defensive secondary. Moreover, RR has a hard on for WR's, apparently. So, Point 1, are we going to go out of our way to offer ANOTHER QB when we have 17 more scholarships, and probably want to make 10 of them eitheir offensive or defensive linemen?
Put that aside, of course we'd like to have Forcier. But, the kid has been offered by Auburn, Kansas, Virginia Tech, Texas A&M, Oregon, and Penn St. And he'd be, indisputably, the top QB recruit for any of those schools (given that there are only 4 QB's left rated higher than him, I feel like that's a safe statement). Why would he want to come to Michigan to compete with TWO other 4-star players in his own class, and a 3rd who will probably be a returning starter?

Is it just me fantasizing or do we think RR will throw two QBs in the backfeild and have all kinds of options/pitchthrow/just run it b/c the defense thinks we are going to throw it, pitch it then throw it and has no idea what is coming?

Chitown: All of that is true, but with the non-binding nature of these committments, things change. I would think it to be irresponsible for RR & Co to drop Forcier's recruitment. We'll see, of course, but Iit's not as if it would be unimaginable for Forcier to go blue.

If there's too much competition, RR will just don the wizard's hat and make whoever disappear.
My guess is that unless Feagin plays great this year, he'll end up as a DB. Threet will most likely have to fight for his starting job in 2009. I think the most developed QB prospect (from the 2009 incoming class) will be given playing time and the other one (two?..probably not, but who knows) will be redshirted.
Sort of a feast or famine scenario; this year, RR has next to no options. Next years and the years after, he will (hopefully) have too many options.

He may be a sleeper in the spring of 2008, but by the end of the summer he won't be. Beaver is an intriguing dual-threat guy with a good arm and explosive athleticism. He is a lot like Oregon's Dennis Dixon both in size and overall skill set. He will be a hot commodity for teams running the spread. Possesses adequate arm strength, can make most of the throws and gets good zip on passes downfield. Shows outstanding mobility, throws well on the run and is at best rolling out of the pocket. Flashes the ability to lead receivers and can be very accurate. Has the lateral mobility to consistently buy time in the pocket and shows good pocket presence. Has the elusiveness to make multiple defenders miss, shows a second gear in the open field and is always a threat to make something happen with feet. Isn?t afraid to take the big hit when throwing downfield, has good intangibles and is a fierce competitor. Is fast enough to play receiver if he were moved there, but he is pretty far along as a passer so we don't anticipate that happening. He can be a bit of a slinger in terms of overall mechanics, but he does show great RPM's on short-to-intermediate throws and has flashed the ability to be an accurate passer both in the pocket and out. Beaver is fun to watch and can be a nightmare as an improvising signal-caller, but he must develop patience and timing as a passer to sit and work through his reads before just tucking the ball and letting his legs do all the work. We have seen him do this at times, but he is raw and likes to be in the shotgun so he can get back and move around, even when it's not necessary. Overall, Beaver has great size, speed and a live arm and once the rough edges are chipped away he could be hard to handle in the right scheme at the next level. Excellent prospect with upside.

Ha ha, that was a good one, chitown. I'm crossing my fingers, but...I didn't like what I saw at the spring game. I'm bracing for an awkward and inconsistent offense next season.
No, I'm not down on Threet, I'm just thinking of him as a stopgap measure until we get a QB who is a little more comfortable in RichRod's spread. A QB who's been running that type of offense for a couple of years (even in HS) will be more used to the split-second decisionmaking that is required.
So I guess yeah, I'm assuming Threet will just vanish into the depths after this season. I could be wrong.

I would also point out that whether Threet ran a spread offense in HS is mostly irrelevant because we've already seen what Threet can do with a spread offense against a D-1 defense. Unlike Newsome or Beaver, we've already gotten a taste of what a Threet-run spread offense is going to look like, and it's going to be inconsistent and awkward, IMO. He'll be better in the fall, but he's not going to be 10,000x better. He'll be ok, but not good enough.
Is Newsome or Beaver the answer? I don't know. But I'm pretty sure that Threet is there simply to "hold the line" until we get someone more capable at the helm.
But let's cheer Threet/Sheridan on anyway, because like it or not, those are our guys for the 2008 season. Here's hoping they put up 30+ every game.

I expect that Beaver will decommit by the end of the recruiting period. It just makes no sense for a guy this talented to take the chance that he is behind Newsome for at least 3 years.
While he could be better than Newsome, it is a big risk for a guy regardless of how confident he is in his abilities. It is one thing to come in behind Feagin, who even if he does well and starts for 4 years on merit, you will still have two years as a starter, but to come in with a highly touted guy in your class is risky. I expect that Beaver will be convinced of this by TCU or some other school where he will come in as a prohibitive favorite to start in year one or year 2.

I expect that Beaver will be convinced of this by TCU or some other school where he will come in as a prohibitive favorite to start in year one or year 2.

so do you think forcier would stay away too with newsome in the fold? USC does this kind of thing all the time. while we are currently not on the same recruiting level they are i see no reason why we cant start doing the same.

Anon,
Abso-fucking-lutely. ESPN has been a bit softer on UM lately and has provided more coverage because the fort has been taken down by RR.
It's actually somewhat similar in politics. I am not saying that this is the main reason that the Bush administration gets a bad rap, but a friend who with experience in politics once told me that the media is harder on Karl Rove and Dick Cheney because they are not friendly at all with the media. How correct he is, I don't know. He is a Republican, but he tends not to be an apologist, so take it FWIW.
Just wrong, but ballsy

I detest Cheney and Rove most for their policies and politics, but it is true that most media types who aren't trying to fellate them off-camera (FoxNews) say that both are obnoxious, asshole pricks.

its not rocket science, when you're a dick to the media (i.e. lloyd), you tend to not get the best press from them. RR has let the media into practices and is always available for an interview and now coincidentally we are getting more love from the media.

Newsome and Beaver. Excellent haul. But the question still remains - can RR recruit at a major program? Does he even know what conference he's in? I'm worried about all the turnover on the staff. And I'm kind of disappointed we aren't sending OMG Brady QBs to the NFL anymore. Someone hold my delicate hands

A good recuiting start for tUOOS no doubt, but I am resting well that in what seven years now at tUOOS that Tressel has yet to figure out how to stop any team that has talent and runs the spread. See Texas 2yrs ago, Illinois, Florida, LSU (and LSU did it and they dont even normally run the spread).

I don't think you can predict how effective Threet will be in the fall based on the spring game. Spring games are not played to show effectiveness. He is inexperienced, its a new offense, everyone is still learning. He probably will not be great, especially at first. A player like Newsome certainly could beat him out in 2009. It is sure to be ugly at times but I am hopeful it will not be a complete year of pain on offense.
I would have preferred Forcier's passing form and nice spirals to Newsomes speed and ability to go deep on the run but I seriously doubt we can have both. I'm relieved we got one and Beavers a good back up plan.
Just my 2 cents worth.

A quick peek at Scout's data from prior years reveals that RR is far ahead in terms of the number of commits he's reeled in this year compared with past years.
We have 7 commits as of yesterday, April 29. At that time in '07, we had 3 commits; in '06 we had 4 commits; in '05 we had 1 commit; in '04 we had 3 commits.
Is this at all significant? Is RR just a great recruiter? Or has the excitement surrounding the new regime made the difference? OR, is HS football recruiting changing completely? Has the proliferation of sites like this, Scout, Rivals, etc. placed more pressure on coaches and recruits alike to make decisions earlier?

I would say yes to all of the above. Yes, he is doing a good job recruiting early, but i think that the pressure to recruit is getting out of hand, in large part due to these websites and all of this hype around recruiting. The frenzies surrounding RoJo and especially TP are proof of how out-of-hand it has become.

Costa's Now invites Leich (editor of Deadspin), Braylon Edwards and Businger (pulitzer prize winner for investigative reporting and writer of friday night lights) to a "town hall" discussion about sports media. The part about blogs, from the second bussinger was introduced he went on a tirade fox news style about the obscenities on blogs, their lack of journalistic integrity, and how they're "takin our jobs." he and costas treated Leich like a liberal on fox news

Nick Saban, on his round of golf with Rich Rodriguez: "We talked about Michigan."
"..........we came from the same home town," Saban said. "I've known him for a long time, and his family. But Brian Griese was his horse, and he can hit it. He did a great job it was fun playing with him."
The two coaches, who will also be linked in history for the 38-day coaching search, are old friends from West Virginia. Rodriguez, you may remember, accepted and then turned down the UA job.
I asked Saban if Rodriguez peppered him with Alabama-related questions, ya know, because he was almost the coach.
"I think he did have the job here," Saban corrected me. "Yeah. But that didn't have anything to do with me. We didn't talk about it. "
OK, fine, so what did the current Michigan coach and the former Michigan State coach discuss? Why Michigan, of course.
"After spending 10 years at Michigan State for me..." Saban said. "You know, when you're in Michigan, it's a lot like being here. It's hard not to develop relationships with the people on the other side. So we had a lot of good friends from the University of Michigan, now he has the opportunity to meet some of them."

@DanK: Your PBUH comment was hilarious, btw. I haven't lived back there in 15 years (thank god) so I wouldn't know how that was, but i found it extremely comical.

Bob Costas?
jesus, apostrophes, people.
the golic/coherd thing is comical. golic thinks people tune in to watch ND lose. well, in that case, NBC should have been pulling in a 50 rating in every game b/c they lost a LOT, moron. hell, no one dislikes ND more than I, and even i stopped watching the massacre that was NDs season last year. after the 38-0 "Yakkity Sax II" i forgot they even played. i'd switch over the NBC & say, 'hey, NDs on, they're losing.... eh old news, [click to the ESPN2 game]"
