If you really want to rip into Comcast, ask this question:
- Why does Comcast force other cable operators carry Comcast SportsNet on expanded basic?
So, to summarize:
Comcast - "You must carry our sports network on expanded basic."
Comcast again - "BTN must go on a sports tier or your bill goes up."
Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!

Did anyone see the interview with James Carville (a huge LSU fan) in Sports Illustrated this week. It's a short interview, but he manages to take at least two shots at Michigan. First, he says Michigan plays gutless, uninspired football (which . . . yeah, we kind of do) and then he says that Penn State has turned into Michigan. It was a bit gratuitous to single out Michigan (especially when, in the next breath, he praises (!) Bobby Bowden), but he's so totally right about Michigan.
I can't wait until we steal his coach.

Agreed, agreed, agreed. Both parties (Comcast and BTN) are being childish about this. The fact is the BTN has done a good job of getting its network onto satellite (at no extra cost to the viewers - including an HD version) as well as now RCN in Chicago. At some point Comcast is going to have to give in, there are just too many other options out their for receiving television these days. I feel for people who are locked into Comcast, but you will know who is at fault here when Comcast finally gives in. And, the BTN at this point certainly can't give Comcast a better deal than DirectTV, Dishnetwork, RCN, or ATT U-verse.

The Boren center situation is ridiculous and is yet another example of how inflexible and stubborn this staff is. Both Henne and Mallet are struggling with Boren's lefty snaps. Boren is struggling with his blocking since he's probably so damn focused on making sure the snap isn't fumbled. Kraus is getting beat far too often on the left side and has proven himself to be a mediocre left guard. But he's shown that he is a good center. And when they switched during the Oregon game, they both played well. Switch them permanently!

Recommended alternative to "you suck": The actual lyrics:
You came, I was alone
I should have known you were temptation
You smiled, luring me on
My heart was gone, you were temptation
It would be thrilling if you were willling
If it can never be, pity me
For you were born to be kissed
I can't resist
You are temptation and I am yours
Here is my heart
Take it and say we'll never part
I'm just a slave, only a slave
To you, temptation
For you were born to be kissed
I can't resist
You are temptation and I am yours
Here is my heart
Take it and say we'll never part
I'm just a slave, only a slave
To you, temptation

Re: Complaints about people standing at games. I'd add "Go to hell" to the "Good riddance."
Re: "You suck" I agree with those that complain it's uncreative. I've been touring the country, going to different games each week this season, and I have to say that "suck" is the most ubiquitous word in college football. Texas fans even insert it into their fight song. We already have students copying the Seminole chop, can't we do better?
Re: Carville - He can make whatever complaints he wants about Michigan, but the guy is a total nutball when it comes to football. In the same interview, he claims that Tim Tebow is "not overly agile" and suggests a playoff system that would be in blatant violation of antitrust laws (something which I would imagine the NCAA should be leery of at this point).

the opinon piece was not surprising. i am more shocked that we don't see that stuff in the paper more often, just b/c there's a guy in EVERY section who says 'down in front.'
i'll never forget the guy in row 25-30 (in the endzone) who asked us in row 20 to sit down.
jackass: hey! sit down in front! we can't see!
us: uhhhh, if we sit, *we* can't see.
jackass: then ask eveyone in front of you to sit down!
us: wha?!?!? there's 400 fucking people in front of us, you jerk-off! STFU.
i mean, really, either burden yourself by standing, or burden all the people sitting in front of you to get everyone to sit down. whattadick.

While I agree that Steven Majors' letter is ridiculous, he brings up one good observation - that 90% of the seats around him are filled by different fans each week. Of course this may the direct result of big Stevie being a tool, but I've heard this from other season ticketholders and noticed it myself. Granted the tickets are expensive and perhaps some folks sell them off to defer some of the cost, but it kind of bugs me and I wonder how far off we are from not selling the place out.

I'm more tolerable of the you suck complaint than I am about people standing. I was at a game this year and there were way too many people complaining about people that were standing. If you don't want to stand up to see the big plays and support your team then give up your tickets that you've had for 40 years so that people who really want to be there can support the team.

The "you suck" chant may not be the most creative chant in the world, but it usually makes me chuckle. As far as I'm concerned, it's not that big a deal. It certainly won't get U-M in trouble like the Yost chants have.
And I am completely mystified as to Mr. Majors' concept of "game day etiquette." I didn't realize etiquette at a major sporting event involved sitting down and being quiet; I thought that was library etiquette or orchestra concert etiquette. Even the parents at my local high school football games -- whose kids just beat Majors' hometown last Friday -- like to stand up and make some noise for big plays.

I have a couple questions for you guys.
What's the face value of student tickets for football games. I kinda made a deal with someone to get em for face value for the Minnesota game and I just wanna know how much I should have ready.
Also, when a game time is TBA, when do they announce the actual time? I'm really hoping the Minny game is a 12:30 start so there's no chance of a time overlap with the hockey game that night.
Despite how much this season has frustrated so far, I can't wait to finally see a game in person. That weekend is gonna be unbelievable.

I have no problem with people standing up before or during major plays at a sporting event. That's part of being a fan and its not a real big problem.
I do have a problem with those individuals who just opt to stand regardless of what's happening on the field. Whether its a handful or a hundred, that part is pretty annoying (and I don't mean just at Michigan Stadium--I mean all sporting events) when you have to look around people to see what's happening.
I was at the 2005 Rose Bowl game against Texas in a section that had UT and UM fans. The Texas fans wanted to stand up throughout the game--the UM fans were different and there were a lot of "sit down in front" being yelled out. By the fourth quarter, it didn't matter--everyone was standing and cheering through every play--and that was all right because the game situation dictated it.
The bottom line is this--you have to mix in common courtesy with your enthusiasm. If most of the people around you are sitting, then sit and watch the game and cheer. But if the game situation merits it, stand up and shout, because most fans really won't mind. I've been at Michigan Stadium during games where the fans in the front stood up and you watch a wave go up the stadium during big/critical plays--and that's cool too.

I disagree with the sitting on any play where our defense is on the field. Our knowledge of being a fan is definitely missing from the stadium. When the defense is on the field, you should be up and yelling at the top of your lungs. If you have a problem with that quit smoking. The stadium can play a role in disrupting offenses if loud enough. As for offense, every play is a big play as far as I'm concerned. Watching Mike Hart turn a one yard loss into a 4 yard gain is a thing of beauty. I do not deserve to sit down.
Basically being from texas and growing up watching texas a&m, the fans are the twelfth man (as sappy as that sounds). We sit down when the team sits down at half time. We leave the stadium when the team leaves the field.

Sorry Dave, poor word choice, Texas A and M has a monopoly on the actual "gayest" things in college football (here gay means homoerotic.) "Ball control" when you squeeze your actual balls or maybe those of the guy in front of you? The weird ass-to-groin group of guys that protect that stupid dog? Have you seen the youtube video of the guy ringing the bell looking exactly like he's masturbating with particular vigor? Them all are seriously the strangest bunch of "heterosexual" homophobes.
It goes w/o saying that if you want to watch a football game sitting in silence you should stay home. The veiw is certainly better. One of the things I miss most about Michigan is the no holds barred mosh pit atmosphere of the student section--people falling on you, puking, getting blow jobs, throwing things at my head, trying to fight with me, yelling whatever you want, not being cold because you're pratically inside your neighbors coat, telling everyone jiggling keys is dum "oh, it's third down get out your keys!!!", screaming "give it to Wheatley (in 2004)!" Why exactly did the tribune article skim over the money issue so casually? It gives no hard figures, which is obviously at the center of this problem, since we're talking about business here. All I've heard is that the BTN demanded too much loot for the games they're showing (I know I'd only be watching it once a week). The only Michigan game I ever had the pleasure to attend was against Rice. We drove 12 hours on friday to go to the game, only to sit in the endzone with grey heads and listen to their sunday brunch, grandkids and "I went to my first game in 1964" discussions while they basically ignored the actual game.
I almost blew a gasket after being told to sit down DURING a long run.
While I tremendously enjoyed my first and only visit to The Big House, sitting among the disinterested and funeral service crowd was a major downer.
Some people don't realize that having tickets to Michigan football is a priviledge, not a right. If people standing up to cheer their team on and yelling something as dumb as "you suck" upsets you to the point that you wouldn't go to a game, then you deserve to be made fun of for eternity.
And give me your tickets. I'll drive the freakin 12 hours going and back for every home game. And I'll stand up for the whole game. And I'll yell "you suck" with the rest of them, as dumb as it may be.

These people actually think every season ticket holder lives in MI? They're absolutely stupid. I invest alot of money, go to a few games, and sell or give away the rest. And to be called out on doing something which I am allowed to do, is frankly insulting. So fuck off all you haters. Rip away on the SEC all you want, but don't include a valued U of M philanthopist in your line of fire, espectially when Sam and Bud Walton of Wal-Mart are avowed Razorbacks.

The 'you suck' cheer is lame and uncreative. I get irritated every time I hear it, and I am thrilled that so many others here feel the same way. Michigan fans can do better than that. And I consider doing nothing after third down stops to be superior than saying "you suck". What's next? Student sections chanting "Eat $h!t, Fah-Q" back at each other, ala the Wisconsin students?

I have to say that Steven Majors, Dexter, is a tool. I've been going to games in the student section for the last 7 years (yes, undergrad+PhD insanity) and you would not believe the difference in energy from the first game to this last one. night and day.
That first year I'd say maybe a quarter of the students stood or even yelled at anypoint during the game. Every year since then the students have gotten more and more energy. I think the articles in the Daily ripping on our collective fanhood had a big impact.
The Claw, You Suck, Maize Out, Yelling, Standing, Penis Balloons, Hot Dog Man, Its Great to be a Michigan Wolverine. These all started in the last 7 years.
Going to a game today is 10x more fun than it was when I started. Hopefully in 7 more years I can say the same.

Yeah Engin Blue, I don't know how it was so quite 7 years ago - when I was there everyone in the student section stood the whole game, and as was previously mentioned the marshmallows were in full effect.

After reading Mr Majors "letter" I will sell my season tickets also. And buy student section seats and scream "you suck" louder than I ever have before and refuse to sit. Also, I vow to leave a flaming bag of poop on Mr Majors doorstep.

I was a law student when the marshmallows stopped. The students were asked to stop throwing the marshmallows because melting marshmallows (in the early season games when it was hot) might damage the new artificial turf. They threatened to throw out anyone throwing marshmallows. It pretty much stopped then. People still tried to play cameraman basketball with water bottle caps and on occasion were successful.
The claw is better than the chop, but it really should go back to being the hammer like it's supposed to be.

the "you suck" thing is worth complaining about? Mr. Bronson (as ever) is right: a coordinated act amongst students, unless utterly offensive, should be celebrated. it's bloody impossible to get 20,000 people to do the same thing at the same time. that's why, as has been mentioned, the victors goes off with many many hitches every time it's performed.
these people who are complaining should put some effort into coordinating something cool that everyone can agree with and do. perhaps that's an obvious retort, but maybe one of them will actually do it one of these days.
i've also said this before, but i always just kind of sang temptations with "you suck" to myself when i was like 12 and we stopped someone on 3rd down. so it's either intuition or totally juvenile. either way, i don't much care.

I forgot the "Eat shit!" "Fuck you!" chants. Yeah, I'd say "You suck!" is kinder and gentler.
I'm with the folks recognizing it's hard to get anything coordinated with thousands of people. It's "uncreative"? Please. It's a football game. With college students. What are they supposed to do, coordinate a chant of "The opposing team prefers carnal relations with blood relatives"?
"You suck" works just fine.
And what's up with the recent lack of The Wave?

I also remember the marshmallow thing ending when the new field turf was installed.

Dear Mr. Majors. Stay in Dexter, and watch the game on TV. We do not need stuff-shirts bemoaning our enthusiasm. Its a football game and at football games people cheer, stand up, and give "high-fives" (in case you don't know what a "high five is, Wikipedia defines it as such: "A high five is a celebratory gesture made by two people, each raising one hand to slap the raised hand of the other — usually meant to communicate mutual satisfaction to spectators or to extend congratulations from one person to another. The arms are usually extended into the air to form the "high" part, and the five fingers of each hand meet, making the "five"."). Generally people will stand up and cheer when the game is close to, you know, show SUPPORT for their team.
Michigan Stadium is commonly referred to as the Quiet House because of people like you. Its a source of embarrassment for me as a college football fan to be lumped into the stodgy, blah, cosmopolitan-sipping, fur coat crowd that pollutes the stadium between the 30 yard lines. So here is my recommendation: If you are unwilling to stand up and cheer, then just go to the tailgate and watch the game from there. Sell your tickets to the loudest drunkest fans, even if they are wearing the opposing team's colors (unless of course, its a bucknut). Your RV or your couch should be comfortable enough and without having to deal with us!

Be careful with the "You Sucks." The Athletic Department has gone so far as to ask the band to stop playing Temptation on 3rd downs. To which the band has said "GOOD DAY SIR!"
We've been asked to encourage students around us NOT to say "you suck," but what am I supposed to do with an instrument in my face? Wave around with a free hand? Total joke.
Let's make Michigan Stadium, Yost Ice Arena, and Crisler Arena as lame as we possibly can... And let's use the band to do it! Play over the CYA cheer, stop playing T on third downs, etc. etc. etc.
GOOD DAY, SIR! I SAID, GOOD DAY!

Everyone used to bring a bag of Marshmallows under their shirt, and at some point during the game (ah, hell - all game long) we'd break into a free-for-all marshmallow fight. Sort of like a snowball fight, I guess. It was a sight to behold, I tell 'ya. If the other team's mascot got anywhere close to the student section, he was pelted mercilessly with them. It must have been hell to clean up.
Bullwinkle was the other. It sounds goofy as hell if I describe it, but it was the funniest thing I've ever seen at college football game.

the claw was started by the daily reporters in ~1998-1999? they wanted to make it less a ripp-off of FSU and more unique to UM. lame doesn't quite cover it. never knew it was supposed to be a hammer. thanks M Daily!
the "it's great-to be-a Michigan Wolverine" thing started in 96 or 97. 1st time i ever heard it was at a pep rally at the Frat next to the union around that time. they had a few players speak, and some semi-retarded frat guy MC-ed the whole thing. he was lame to say the least. anyhow, at the end, he got on the mike one more time to try and get everyone in on the "it's great-to be-a Michigan Wolverine" thing. everyone in the crowd was like 'what the hell cheer is that? how 'bout the fight song, ya jackass.'
the rally at the GradLib prior to the 03 ND game was much more well-produced.

I can't speak for before 7 years ago but there were definitely students still sitting during my first OSU game. Thats pretty weak. I'll give you 1/4 is an exaggeration but you can't say everyone stood for every game back then either. By senior year (03) everyone was standing.. and rushed the field after OSU. Pretty sad that that was the last time we've beaten them.
Maybe there was a lull in the few years after 97 but before I got here? I stand corrected on the wolverine chant too, it def wasn't popular my first few years though like it is now.
I don't see anyone saying the energy was better back then than it is now though. The student section is much more united.

A couple things about The Wave during Penn State.
1) There won't be a wave until the game is pretty much in hand, usually in the 3rd quarter. Penn State went down to the wire.
2) The students start the wave, usually down front in the corner of the endzone. The one during Penn State started elsewhere and the students pretty much killed it, because of (1).
Childish? Probably. But it keeps you focused on the game when it counts.

Yea....we only do waves that are started in the student section. That one vs. PSU started in the opposite corner and was lame. I know I refused to do it, that's for sure. Thanks for the marshmallow explanation Colorado! That sounds glorious, I wish we could do that now.

The claw started in the 02-03 and 03-04 seasons by the Daily sports writers.

Heres a letter to the editor I dug up from right before the 03-04 OSU game.
-----------------------------------
To the Daily:
I must commend the Daily on doing a good job trying to get students ready for the Ohio State game this weekend. I want to comment on the hypocracy that has been the criticism of Michigan fans this year. For the last several years, we have been criticized for being quiet fans, and the Big House for being about as intimidating as a library. People demanded fans to get back homefield advantage, and this year we did. We cheered loudly with Notre Dame and possibly louder with Purdue. Unfortunately, with both of those wins can criticism that our cheering and language was “un-Michigan like” and did not keep with the traditions of our University. Alumni complained and we got berated for not making the Big House a friendly place for opposing fans and players.
I think that is exactly what we need to be doing. If we ran Purdue and Notre Dame off the field with our cheers and taunting, then we were doing what everyone criticized us for not doing the last two years. Obscenity and drunkenness is not necessary, but being loud is. Don’t listen to alumni or critics. We owe it to our players as well as ourselves to be as loud possible this upcoming weekend.

RE the students killing the wave - they sure did... the timing sucked sure, but it was my wife's first game in the bighouse, and I hoped she would see a good one... Oh well, hopefully next year.
"I don't see anyone saying the energy was better back then than it is now though. The student section is much more united."
The student section this year was definitely united and strong... Made me proud and my wife laughed her ass off at the "you sucks" (we all got in on it on my side too) and assorted antics... I was sitting in the opposite corner (on the 10) 14 rows up in the same endzone - luckily there were enough "younger" alumni around that almost of us all stood pretty much the whole game (time outs and tv breaks excluded) and yelled our asses off. I don't know what was going on behind me on the upper rows, but nearly everyone around me all the way down to the field did a pretty good job of representing.

PS - just wanted to say bravo again to the students - it starts with you guys - lead by example and it will work its way up through the younger alumni.
I can only hope day will come when we all will be on the same page. I know when I am one of the older guys I won't be letting us down. It will start with the students leading the way.

Re: The Shit Band. During the game, a group of around ten Marching Band members would show up a various places in the stadium, play a brief song that called for an audience response (e.g. Tequila), at the end of which the surounding crowd would all yell in unison "Shit!"
