This is yet more evidence that Sailboat Bill is panicking and his "process" sucks- his original vow not to hire a coordinator is out the window.
For the record, I always felt that Sailboat Bill should be open to coordinators, but he was adamant about it at Lloyd's presser. Now that he's been punched in the mouth a few times, I'm glad to see he's woken up. A little late, though, for me to consider him to be anything greater than a coddled, bureaucratic asshat.

Sorry Brian, but I am definitely not bullish on Tedford. He seems to have more of KF's career arc. Granted, it is better than some alternatives being talked about (Hoke, English, ect). And there are questions on his recruiting ability, which I would think that Sarkisian wouldn't have being part of the USC shirtless factory.

You know, if you were a college football beatwriter, you could say that anyone was being discussed as a candidate for the Michigan job, and attribute it to unnamed "sources." Given that clearly no one really knows anything, there's certainly no harm in doing so, and you fill up some column space. Point is, I'm not sure three throwaway lines in this guy's weekly update are worth a whole lot. He could have been reading this blog, and Brian's pimping of Tedford...

Name a big game Tedford has won? Oregon this year. And he didn't really follow that up very well. It was a pretty big upset when he beat USC in 03, so that is big difference than winning games against good teams you are supposed to win. He is overrated.
As for USC's struggles on offense this year, do not discount the Booty injury. There was a clear, Mallett-level dropoff in production from Booty to Sanchez.

Tedford...Oh my Tedford. You went 6-6 in the PAC 10, not good enough for Michigan. Though we are defending a 6-6 Ferentz choice? Which one has more failed potential? Or Hoke? Let's see here:
Ferentz
Hoke
Tedford
Honestly, of all the mid card underachievers I would take Tedford because he would probably cost a bit less than Ferentz but win at least as much. Hoke...sigh, I don't want to even talk about that one.

A buddy who works for the UM Director of Football Ops just called me and said that Miles is now out of the running (by his own choice, again) as of yesterday, and that yes, they're truly looking at the Pac-10 right now, as the complaining about a boring offense seems to have hit home to the Ath Dept.
I asked for details on Miles, and he said that he would elaborate after all was said and done, but that it was not $$$, and signs pointed to personality conflicts vis a vis Carr.
If the Pac-10 candidates don't end up in a hire, then Hoke remains a very possible Plan B hire.
I know this may contradict some other info, but take it for what it's worth.

If you're going to say don't discount the Booty injury don't you have to say the same thing about Cal's QB? Didn't he get hurt but tell Tedford that he was fine? I suppose you can knock Tedford for that (that he should have realized his QB was hurt). I think that had quite a bit to do with Cal's dropoff at the end of the year. I'd be able to get behind a Tedford hire.

As regards the Booty injury, Mark Sanchez was the #1 quarterback recruit in 2005 and had therefore been in USC's program for several years. That Sarkisian's offense melting down when this guy had to go in doesn't say anything positive about Sarkisian.
I can't say for sure but I imagine that the Longshore replacement was in recruiting terms equivalent to some guy off the street.
Tedford is a rock-solid coach who could do great things with the QB and WR talent Michigan recruits. Of the names that have been mentioned, he's the only person other than Miles that I would truly be excited about.

I didn't mind losing Miles. He sucks. What does anger me though is that Bill Martin has done nothing (at least it seems so) while the best candidates are being snatched up by other schools e.g. Paul Johnson to Ga. Tech. Martin might singlehandedly destroy Michigan football b/c he is a bumbling idiot who is not doing his job or his homework. I'm beginning to believe that we have actually heard in the media everything that he has done in this coaching search, which is sadly very little.

Applewhite:
Successful QB coach in V. Young's early years. You could argue talent here because there is no way Applewhite taught him to scramble.
Successful as OC at Rice (who SMQB thinks should drop out of D1A). He set up Dillard with ridiculous receiving stats. He took a program consistently competitive with Duke and made them good for the short stretch he was there.
He is now the OC at Alabama under Saban. Not too impressed with their numbers this year, but that could be attributed to first year with his system with players they did not recruit.
Of course this means nothing to the coach search as he's still not ready to be a HC yet. One day, oh yes one day. Besides, if we did do the unthinkable and hire him, he would bolt to Texas in a heart beat once Mack Brown hangs up the spurs.

I think Pat Forde, and ESPN's coverage of the Michigan coaching search has been substandard reporting at best.
Michigan has only seriously considered one candidate so far, Greg Shiano, who took the job and then does a 180 over night. Go figure. But its in ESPN's best interest to promote it that "they cant get who they want" which is not accurate.
Talks for the first time between President Mary Sue Coleman, Bill Martin began in earnest on Friday for the very first time. Time will tell if there is an offer and if Miles accepts it. If he does not then their second choice will have said no, but its being portrayed that no one wants the job when in fact they have hardly reached out to anyone yet, why is the biggest question.
Now there is certainly an arrogance that needs to be addressed at the top of the administration, I wont argue that, but the coaching search is a poor example of it.
And note to Forde, Carr wont be around the Michigan offices long, you and I both know that and your writing of it is a flat out lie.

Don't get too wrapped up in Tedford's 6-6 mark this year. He was killed by injuries in a year when the Pac 10 is the best it has been in decades. The guy can coach. Just to clear a few thoughts from previous thread and commentator sections:
ATL Blue,
I went quit because I had to go grab lunch....i have no problem slacking off at work while contributing to the board, but I draw the line at skipping lunch.
BigJim,
I dont have a Steeler buddy....i am the Steeler fan....and that second half was not fun to watch....three trips inside the Pats 10-yard line for the game and we got just 6 points, thats not good....i'd rather beat them in January...lol.
Someone asked the O/U on Big 10 wins.....take the Over if its 5.5, take the Under if its 6.5....home games vs Illini, Wisco and road games vs PSU and OSU are toss ups. ...I figure we split those and win the rest....i would not be surprised if we enter OSU w/ a 6-1 league mark, so 7 is attainable. I'll duck as the OSU posters hurl venom my way.
As far as Tedford, I like him. His career arc is not like KF as Cal won the league title last year.....his team quit this year and that is a drawback...I would not be doing cartwheels over him, but I would not the sky is falling either....thats kinda how I feel about most candidates in this process, though....these news announcements are what I am talking about, though....UM is casting a wide wide net in the event that Miles is a no go, and previous qualifications, like previous HC experience, will no longer be a factor. Expect Jason Garrett's name to be in the press.
At lunch, I saw Mark May on TV doing on spot on the UM search. They were running shots of Brian Kelly the whole time. The restaurant had music going, so I could not hear. I am told that BK is not a candidate, so I am curious as to what MayDay's blurb was on. Anyone catch that?

MLawyer makes a fantastic point. Cal has had to contend with a better ASU and USC. But it beat Oregon on the road! But then it lost to Stanford. The Pac10 is getting tougher, and the Cal team has been plagued by injuries, but I would like to know how Tedford could do with a healthy team. A question for anyone willing to answer: does Tedford suck at defense or is the defensive coordinator just really shitty, or both?

Actually, making 3.3 million in the San Fran is about the equivalent of making about 2.0 million in Detroit. I know that AA is not Detroit and Berkley is not San Fran, but I bet the difference in cost of living is enormous. However, in the end, it may not be a factor.

Exactly right.
The question is: Why we don't have $3 million or $4 million or whatever the hell it takes? We have a bigger program than all these others, a bigger stadium, $250 million to build skyboxes. What's the problem?
BTW, if were a million short, alumni would pay the difference for the right guy. We could probably raise that much just from the people on this board.

Cal isn't really the Pac-10 equivalent of Indiana, which is strictly a basketball school. It's more like Wisconsin, who had done nothing for decades before Alvarez got there.
I think that Tedford is a better all-around coach than Miles is. He's good at developing players and his game plans are usually very good, and no one questions whether he runs a clean program.
Not sure he'd be willing to come, though.

I'm of Armenian descent and would love to see one of our own lead my Wolverines to consistent winning seasons. Unfortunately Sarko lacks the demonstrated HC coaching success to justify legit candidacy. Scratch this guy, Bill Martin and pony up for a real HC please.

Name a big game win by Tedford?
Um, how about being the only team to beat USC in the regular season during that 3 year stretch of Bush/Leinart/White/Knights of the Templar?
Tedford would be an awesome hire. Cal just simply fell apart, mostly due to the injuries, at the end of the year. Brian's PIH about Tedford during their 5-0 start drew countless praise around here - and endless "you cant have him!" talk from Cal fans. Now we're getting bipolar and saying he's a Kirk freakin Ferentz equivalent? Cmon now. Tedford is an offensive whiz, and most importantly, his QBs kick ass in college. I really dont care about how successful Michigan QBs are in the NFL or how unsuccessful Tedford's QBs are when they're drafted high and fail(Though Rodgers is looking legit)...I care about our QBs getting better and better while playing for OUR Wolverines. Im tired of hanging my hat on our QBs NFL success. I want them, and the rest of our offense, to start kicking ass in school.
That is all.

For goodness sakes, stay away from Sarkisian. He's no Chow, but I'm afraid of the drop-off in USC's production if you guys steal him.
As for the guy who thinks Tedford is better, go ahead and take him. As a USC fan, I think Tedford's best days are already behind him. Pete Carroll's basically promised not to ever lose to Cal again, and if things continue their current track, Cal's probably not winning more than once in every 4 years as long as Tedford stays.

This should boost the Armenian studies program a bit. That's about all though. I'd rather see Ara Parseghian return from the undead to coach us. Heck, he has more of a pulse than Carr.

This prevailing notion that Cal quit seems to be coming from people who watch standings and not games.

Sarkisian not an upper tier candidate? He was offered the Raiders job and turned it down, which is the only reason Lane Kiffin got it.

It is definitely good to hear some new names finally getting some attention. Tedford would definitely work in Michigan with the Pac-10 offense and stuff. Think about it...one reason why the Big 10 struggles in the Rose Bowl is because they struggle against the west coast offense. Well, what would that do for the program if the west coast offense comes here??? think about it...i'm hoping for Tedford...forget the 6-6 season..he faced a ridiculously good Pac 10...Drop the LM talk and let's start talking JT
