the only thing that the half-court press did was take time from our shot clock... so our offense had very little time to get set.
but all we do is chuck 3s, so what's the diff? unless you're running a 1-3-1 FC press to pressure our guards (who don't have great ball handling ability aside from Grady, imo) a zone won't help you against M. am i wrong?

Totally disagree. LLWS is truly what sport is all about. As the coach of a 11/12 year old team down here in Georgia (season started 3 weeks ago - how's the snow up there?), I've got to say that getting these boys to play at that level is a thing of beauty. My only arguement is that at age 12, the field is too small.
Down here we don't play much Little League - mostly Dizzy Dean league - and these boys can play! Base paths are 70', not 60'. Outfield is 250, not 200, and the pitcher's another 5' back. Makes for a better - and safer game.
TrueBlueGeorgia |

I've always thought the Little League field is too small also. It seems like there are way too many kids getting base hits off of what should be routine ground outs.

I'm in southern california right now, so as for the snow, no clue. I've gone through the whole process fairly recently, playing 11 years ago and coaching last year. I agree about the dizzy dean, babe ruth, mickey mantle, connie mack leagues though. I just think the hype of the Little League World Series is over the top. I mean how much press did Danny Almonte receive for playing illegally, then all the press afterwards. For being just a 12 year old tournament, it was ridiculously overblown.

Color me unimpressed with Beilien. Michigan doesn't play defense, and if you can't recruit and can't get your team to play defense, you aren't going to win many games. I would imagine he will get his team to play some defense (given past record and all), but geez, if OSU had any sort of threat from the perimeter, they would have scored 90. I guess as an OSU fan watching that game, you could see why Michigan sucks, yet puzzled at why they didn't win more games this year.
Also, the Dispatch reported it was Tressel. But I wasn't there so I don't know.

Interesting comments by poster GeeMoney on this thread on Mlive story re RR interview.
http://www.mlive.com/wolverines/
...ebruary_15.html
Don't know if he is what he claims to be (assisting as an M scout/recruiter in FL), but his statements appear consistent with what we know and what we see. Worth a few minutes to read his comments, especially his opinion about M's history of recruiting through camp (call's it lazy recruiting).
At any rate, he call out "4-5" coaches who could not recruit and thinks that RR's staff are all great recruiters from what he has seen.
Don't know if the guy is legit, but interesting observations.

Toomer: "There was a really political situation when I was there; there's a Michigan way or the highway, and I think that our best guys have to be out there."
Kind of says it all, doesn't it?
Also, his jealousy of Plaxico is understandable, but consider this - Burress is the 2nd best receiver (Charles Rogers) that MSU has had in my lifetime. Toomer was good here, but he's no Braylon. Not saying we shouldn't welcome him back; we absolutely should. Just saying it's not surprising if he doesn't get quite the same kind of hero worship here.

Three conference wins in a row is huge for this team. Look at all of the walk ons who have had to fill up the roster. Amaker left the cupboard beyond bare. Give the freshmen and sophomores a chance. I think Ty Law is the only other disgruntled former player that has really gone public to my knowledge.'
Don't know the details, so it is hard to judge, but the fact that he does not speak to former teammates either may not be the indictment on the program, and rather may rest with the man feeling unwelcome.
Just don't understand why a guy who had a great college and NFL career would not be welcomed. Just doesn't sound consistent with Lloyd's love of tradition, Bo and the program. I know that Moeller was pretty well disliked by the players, but had not heard that about LLoyd.

I also don't think Toomer is holding a grudge, per say. The reporter asked him ?s and he responded honestly. However, when he said he was a little jealous of Burress, I think that was a little strange for a guy who doesn't talk to anyone from the program anymore. All you gotta do is call once, and I'm SURE the people involved in our program would open their arms out wide to anybody who wanted to come back and visit/be a part of the program. When Plax comes into town, I'm sure he calls ahead of time and gets a field pass and spends the weekend in E.L. That's all it'd take for Toomer if he wanted, so I'm confused about that.

@DanK,
Yep, they start leading off at age 11. In DD, the field is the same size as LL at ages 9 and 10 (60' base paths, 46' to the mound) but jumps to 70' for 11 and 12. Dizzy Dean is the big southeastern league. Most teams in GA are not LL and I suspect that the last 2 teams that won the LLWS would not have made it out of the DD state tourney.
Just as much politics in DD as LL though. Lots of crazy good ole boys out of small town GA/AL, etc. Still, nothing better than kids baseball. Both my boys play, and as a 30 year M season ticket holder, I've got to say nothing beats watching or coaching those games.
I coach 2 teams in the spring, then get to drive all over the southeast on the weekends in the summer to watch one of my boys play travel ball, which ends in late July. But good news! Fall ball starts in September!

gsims - agreed to a point. We have won a total of 8 games this season, one of those was against a rival we haven't beaten in 7 tries. IOnly five of our wins were actually at home. I'd say rushing the court isn't completely silly.

People who are arguing about what was chanted or whether or not our students should've rushed the court are missing the point.
That point is that for the first time in years there are real, tangible signs of progress within the basketball program. I can't remember the last time I watched a game and agreed with about 80% of the shots we took. Most of the 3s we shot were good 3s within the flow of the offense. I think that was a major factor towards shooting a higher percentage than we've seen so far this year.
We worked the ball inside out. We were slashing, we got dribble penetration. I thought we played tough D. We didn't necessarily play good D, but we were working hard through screens, we switched and got good rotations and recoveries off our switches. The team D will come, but there are some real serious signs of progress everywhere. I don't really think it's out of line that people think we might make the tournament next year. I personally think we're a bubble team next season, but we do have a solid talent base (Harris, Grady, Sims, Udoh) to start building from.

For the first time in like 7 years, I see basketball players who are actually improving - they're better now then they were their first game with the team. That's exciting. So we storm the floor - are we going to win fewer games because of it? No? So who cares?

I also think that rushing the floor, and the general student section excitement, is really important for the team. I don't care what anyone says about not feeling sorry for college athletes; they are 18 years old and losing and having no one care about your team sucks. It is really nice for the team to see the students and the university be excited about their success, however incremental that success might be.

Every single idiot student who rushed the floor should be pistol-whippped. We're fucking 8-17, you retards! Congratulate yourselves, we're now a mid major when it comes to basketball.

For a guy who doesn't like college basketball, you sure care a lot about what college basketball fans do.
It couldn't be that what you meant to say was "I only like college basketball when Michigan is teh awesomee! and since they are not I am clearly above it!"?

I've seen it referenced as a "Tressel, Tressel" chant everywhere else, and since that would seem to make a hell of a lot more sense, I'm assuming that's what it was.
As for storming the floor, you just avoided having your basketball seniors join the football seniors in graduating without beating OSU. You're allowed to be happy. I'm pretty sure your women's basketball team is still on track, though.

SO I have been wondering about Pryor since he has been awfully quite lately... In this process I found this and umm... WOW!
"Pryor, who is also a five-star basketball player, led his team to victory with 24 points, 24 rebounds, 10 blocks and seven assists."
Damn near a quadruple double!

Re: the article Aaron G. posted
That article was completely devoid of anything meaningful at all. Hai guise, I am MSM newspaper writer and didja know that college football has these nifty things called rivalries! And Michigan don't like those Ohio Staters, no sir!
Jesus, someone was working on a tight deadline today.
And I immediately question the football credibility of any reporter, who watches football for a living and is paid to write about it presumably, that cannot spell Belichick. Actually, it doesn't matter if he never ever covers football except for today. It takes literally three seconds to google him and figure out the correct spelling.

I think they abandoned the "Best Fans in the Land" hoopla after last year's Michigan game. They must have seen it was hopeless. I could tell through scarlet-tinted glasses, myself.

RE: the 2-2-1
OSU's been doing it pretty much all year, but yeah, we never seem to trap out of it, and the way I learned it, the 3/4-court 2-2-1 was a prime trapping defense. Speaking of...
RE: Matta
I've had inklings that Matta's not much in the way of an X's and O's coach myself, even going back to last year's Final Four team. But every time I think that, I remember that he had a lot of success at Butler and Xavier too, and I sure don't think he was getting by with superb talent in those places. He rode someone named Romaine Sato to the Elite Eight in 2004, fer Chrissakes.
Congratulations on the win.

The Michigan Daily agrees the Buckeye vermin were chanting "asshole:"
"As Rodriguez began to address the crowd at halftime of yesterday's basketball game against Ohio State, an "asshole" chant came down from the top rows behind the north basket at Crisler Arena, where about 50 Buckeye fans were sitting."

Don't be ahtin' on Grady, he has much more than a dribble in his game. He can shoot, he plays at least decent defense and he make some nice passes for a freshman. Look for him, Sims and Harris to lead Michigan back into the tourney as soon as next year.

As one of the students who rushed the court, I think that at least I support my team! Regardless of the sport, a hard-fought exciting win against Ohio State is always a good time, regardless of the sport. Are all of the haters implying that students are not allowed to express their excitement that was unless were at the national championship?

the problem w/ rushing the court is that it assigns meaning to a game that, in the long run, had very little meaning. this osu team is essentially last years M team. we are essentially PSU/NW this year. how many NW/PSU/Iowa students rushed the court last year when they beat M?

Sure that game (record-wise) might be insignificant, but with a team that's been struggling all season, winning three straight is a glimmer of hope, and no better to get it than vs ohio state...it was an intense, exciting game

I sat in the lower part of the maize seats, but right in front of the Bucknut fans and had to listen to them the entire game. They were, in fact, very clearly chanting "Tressel." With the less-than-stellar sound system at Crisler, they drowned out the beginning of Rod's speech for everyone surrounding them. Then everyone began shouting at them to STFU. The worst thing was that the 200+ football lettermen were in the house, and it was terribly disrespectful. I will say, though, that there were other obvious groups of red-garbed fans, all of whom behaved entirely appropriately.
I do wish they'd learn to spell something other than the name of their state.
And although I thought the court rushing was over the top, it was nice finally to beat OSU at something besides hockey.

“Buckeye fans will never change.” Seems to me that about 5% of fans create 95% of the problems – this has always been the case - but I would expect you to paint us all with the same tainted brush. It’s unfortunate that these people exist, but the vast majority of Buckeyes try very hard to make opposing team’s fans feel welcome, and yes, that includes Michigan fans. U of M may be a fancy university, but the state of Michigan is not, and while most Michigan fans were very welcoming when my friends and I was in Ann Arbor last November, I witnessed egregious fan behavior, townies and rednecks in equal numbers to what you’ll find in Columbus. You need to move out of your glass house, Brian.
