Gsims,
Our run plays were
formation
then
42 sweep/toss/counter/zone (yes we ran zone blocking and we were good at it)
We had an unbelievable O-line coach.
The formation thing is weird to me. We played against option teams that would do a ton of formations and our coaches just gave us a cue, if it was me at SS then I always lined up just outside the TE. Nothing else mattered for me, and we shut option teams down too.

I've said this before, but here I go again . . .
My biggest disappointment with basketball and Beilein is that I was under the impression that he could do more with less. That his coaching and his system could make 2* teams compete with 4* teams. And all that jazz. I know there's not a lot of talent there, and I never expected them to make even the NIT this year, but I never dreamed they'd be as bad as they are. UM's not even really putting up a fight most games.
I'm not ready to bail. And I do think Beilein will get this team in the tournament and compete for a B10 title or two before all is said and done. But the process is going to be much longer and much more painful that anticipated.
And our incoming recruiting class? Ugh.

As a stay to end guy myself, I'd say the hardest football game to gut through was Purdue in '95
Date: November 1
Temperature: -1 and sleeting
Score: 5-0
On the upside at least there was a freshman Woodson getting a sack in the endzone for a safety.

Trueblue,
The 1-3-1 is the hardest defense to teach, and takes the longest to become effective at. It's easy to be marginally good at, but the style he wants is really hard and requires kids to forget almost everything they've learned up until then. The other problem is that if you're not good at the 1-3-1 it is the defense that will get beat the most and look horrible doing it.

gsims,
my junior year we had pretty good talent my senior year we were not very deep and a lot of our secondary was slower. We ran a cover 2 so our cb's didn't have to go 1 on 1. Our D coaches were really good and they basically put us in positions to make plays. In the semi's I was told to just stand in a spot and not chase the ball (it was an option team) I can't count the number of times the ball carrier just ran right to me on a counter or cross-buck play. i had 13 tackles at SS and I didn't really move for half of them.
Yeah, we would make some adjustments and we weren't a great D my senior year but 7 of us started on both sides and we were maybe 13 guys that could play.

1) this post is why i read the blog.
2) this season has shown 2 things: a) TA was a terrible recruiter. he couldn't recruit depth, aggressiveness, or passion. and wasn't great at recruiting talent either. b) these guys on the team REALLY don't fit this system. i'm beginning to wonder if DSims has ever attempted a jumper in a game or practice. gibson shoots better than he does.
3) i am a little concerned about how much this offense depends on settling for outside shots. no body scores pts in the paint. at this rate, i don't see any talented guys more than 6-7 committing to michigan. why would they? it's like a WR committing to Navy.
harris, however, is good. best player we've had since horton. yes, he's a TO factory, but once LLP gets in the rotation (10 mos from now, ugh), we could put shepard at the 2 and manny at the 3. he's only played 20 games at this level.

I tried watching the basketball game last night. But they kept sucking. And then the Democratic Primary debate came on, and lo and behold, that was more interesting.
During the time I was watching the game, however, I realized that I'm an incredibly stupid observer of bball. I kept thinking to myself 'these guys have no offense, they're just playing streetball and throwing up bricks,' which was the exact same thought I had anytime I watched an Amaker team play.
But it can't possibly be true that the guys are doing the same damn thing with Beilein that they were doing with Amaker. Thus my conclusion I can't analyze my way out of a wet paper bag when it comes to bball.
Yes, this comment was all about me me me. Maybe that's why I like Pryor.

For those of you who are too young to know (which is, I think, most of you), Cazzie Russell was one of the greatest players ever to play college basketball - and not a bad pro.
Russell, Bill Buntin, Oliver Darden, George Pomey and Larry Tregoning (sp?) earned a place in college bball history with back-to-back Final Fours. They lost the championship games to Duke (I think) and the UCLA team that started the streak, but that does not diminish their accomplishments very much.
Brian is right. It is sad that Cazzie had to see that. Now that he's seen the bottom, let's hope that Beilein can right the ship and Cazzie will be invited back to see the top.

gsims,
I still say the 1-3-1 is the best half-court trap defense in the game. If you teach kids to take smart risks, you will force turnovers all day. There's a guy that is helping coach at my old HS, he's in the Florida HS hall of fame and he's retired now, but he knows the 1-3-1 like no other. Had HS kids executing it flawlessly in two weeks.

I admired Beilein's WVU Pittsnoggle teams--it's the last time I really found myself getting excited about a college hopp team. But a) I agree that the team getting worse (as if they're giving up? terrifying) b; don't even have Brian's confidence that Beilein eventually wins here, and c) think it's possible Beilein et al. could suffer through 3-4 seasons of abject dismality and get fired without EVER implement his system with his players. Over on the mlive board people are saying Harris may bolt, which would be an outright disaster for Beilein. . .

The next time any rumor posted on the MLive board comes to fruition will be the first.
The thing I don't understand about the offense is it seems designed to have the 5 (Udoh or Gibson) at the top of the key about 50% of the time. If our 5's could shoot like WVU 5's (or Rasheed), then this would make sense and be difficult to defend, but mostly it just pulls our best rebounder and interior scorers (Udoh especially) away from the basket.
The reason Beilein would win at WVU with 2*'s is that he would find guys that could shoot and wouldn't turn the ball. Our guys can't shoot and turn the ball over like crazy (although less than last year - Thanks Tommy!). Not such a good fit.
Hopefully we pull off a miracle and sign Plumlee and Morris for '09, although that's about as likely as Pryor.

It may take a few years for the system to start working, but not being able to shoot... I'm not sure that's a "system" thing. If there are rumors about Harris transferring, it would almost be understandable.
I guess what I'm most disappointed in is that there's no transition to this system. The kids have been thrown in sink or swim, and they're confidence has to have taken a hit. I think that's the "lack of improvement" we're seeing.

Yeah, that's the fundamental problem. Amaker recruited guys who played 1-on-1, in-your-face street ball. Beilein requires a disciplined, cerebral approach to the game - the exact opposite of what these guys have done all their lives. Unfortunately, Beiliein is Beilein - he has his system and that's what he wants done. These guys just don't fit.
Beilein's ideal player is 7'8" tall and can hit 90% from the 3-point line. We don't have many of those at the moment.

Look - if Beilein's team sucks next year and the year after that with no signs of getting any better, then we may conclude at that point that Beilein is not a good fit at Michigan. But even if that comes to pass, it doesn't mean that Tommy "I Never Took Michigan to the NCAAs in Six Years" Amaker was any good.
Different than Charlie "We will have a decisive x's and o's advantage in every game we play" Weis getting throttled by the school's two biggest rivals in his third year by identical scores of 38-0.
In the domers' defense (sort of), just because Weis sucks doesn't mean that Willingham also did not suck.

caup '91 - I agree, it's painful. But it's even more painful watching guys with no business beyond the arc launching three after three. I think Harris has a little floater, Sims can put it on the floor and get to the basket and Grady, well, he's quick and could at least penetrate and dish. A more conventional O might give them half a chance.
Admittedly, how you transition from there to Beilein Ball over time isn't clear to me.
But we'll see. Beilein does deserve some time. And Amaker wasn't the answer.

you can see the beginning glimmers of competence in regards to the bball team running coach b's offense. by the time of the b10 tourney one hopes that the backdoor cuts will come the instant *before* the back-pick is set (pay close attention next time you watch...the cutter is too slow in making his cut; as well, the pick-man is often late in setting the pick, the point-man is virtually always slow making any passes, etc.). with increased competence players will make intuitive plays.
bball is like any other sport where reacting is better than thinking. increased flow will cause more space in the half-court sets which will lead to more open looks. the players *seem* to be figuring out spacing and movement; they just are not comfortable in this system to where it (the system) flows naturally (the youth of the team sure doesn't help either).

When a team runs its offense 30 feet from the basket with pass away, screen away, this is the result. Especially with players who may have never learned how to come of a screen or slip one. I'm still waiting to see the back cuts I saw happen on a regular basis at WVU...and when I say "what I saw at WVU" I mean "what I saw on TV when nothing else was happening".
Surely Beilein will be good for the Blues Crew. But it was nasty watching what little I could of it last night here in Texas on BTN.

i was in the student section yesterday right behind the bench and the best example of it not being beilein's fault was after cj lee drove to the basket when we had cut it to ten beilein turns to the bench and simply yells, "what in the heck was he doing? is he insane? thats exactly what we want not to do" and then he continued to "talk" to lee on the bench for the next 3 minutes. it just seems our guys cant hold on to anything worth while he has to say

i cannot begin to count the number of times i beg a player to scrape off of a pick rather than loop around it. this seems to me to be more a function of youth than poor fit. (any player worth his salt can play in any system in bball, assuming ego and habit can be subsumed.)

when you are young you cannot believe all the bs repetition that occurs in practice. with age and wisdom you realize your coaches were trying to use pavlovian techniques to make playing in their systems second nature. by d-1 college one hopes the players get it (i personally think coach b's system is working...folks just need to take a rather large valium and enjoy the "baby steps to the elevator" progress all of us optimists are seeing.)

Your coach b is out of his league and the loss of top tier d-1 ballers will continue to Oregon, Memphis, Msu, Syracuse because your coach inability to relate or deal with Detroit/Flint h.s. coaches/players.

He's right about the percentages.
20 3-point shots, make 30% of them = 18 points.
20 2-point shots to get 18 points = 9
9/20 = 45%
So a 30% 3-point shooter will score as much as a 45% 2-point shooter.

The only part of the bball equation that we need be concerned about is recruiting. This man can coach. He has few players. If he continues to have few players, he will do better, but not be elite. If he gets studs, he will be great.
Way too early to judge his recruiting, although the early returns are not encouraging. Jorel is right - bline needs to keep a decent slice of in-state talent.

I can't say the best bet is Threet for Utah. I can't say there is a true best bet until after signing day when we know who is even in the running.
Actually, I take that back, since its either Cone or Threet only in the running right now, Threet is my bet too.

But going back to where I was going...
I somewhat have to assume that if Threet is the QB for next year, the coaches would be designing a gameplan for him. If we get TP, they will use a WVU-esque playbook. As much faith as I have to place in the coaches, I still wonder if they will design the new offense for Threet to excel in or will they just say TP is as good and were throwing him right into the WVU offense. I can't say that I trust the coaching staff enough yet (having done very little so far) to put the effort to design two offenses during the offseason and make them similar enough to where we can adjust to one or the other.
I mean in spring ball, we will have to practice Threet style offense right? TP won't be here. We won't have any "dual threat" QBs to practice with. So do we teach the offense the Threet offense during Spring ball, then switch to a TP style offense during the summer sessions? I'm too drunk to properly articulate my thoughts here. Is anyone understanding my general worry?

I say that they practice the Threet version of the offense and use TP as a change of pace. The change of pace plays, at least from the outside, look to be easier to implement. He doesn't need the whole play book to be successful on only a few downs.
Tebow last year is a good example of a very limited playbook that worked.

Whoops! Didn't realize it was insider. Here's the Stonum clip:
Darryl Stonum, a Michigan recruit, on a conversation with Meyer: "He told me that he talked to Coach [Lloyd] Carr and Coach Soup [Erik Campbell] and that they told him that I would be a much better fit in the Florida offense than I would be in the one at Michigan. I thought, wow, my coaches are selling me out? I confronted them about it. I asked Coach Carr and Coach Soup about it and they said they never talked to that guy and that there was no way they ever said anything like that and that they think I should be a Wolverine. I believed them. Right then, I knew just how Florida rolled."

i think it's perfectly fine to say the previous coaches recruiting efforts impact the teams performance in the first couple of years after. But it cuts both ways.
If you win, the other guy deserves credit, if you lose, the other guy deserves blame. Like Larry Coker at Miami or Barry Switzer in Dallas.
Notre Dame fans are douchebags because they don't give Ty any credit for fatweiss's wins his first two years, and they are giving him all the blame for the third.
If belien's team's still suck in year three, then that's a problem. but weiss has been getting more and more of his 'own' players and the team has gotten worse and worse.

I still can't believe that ND gave Weis that massive extension. I wonder if Charlie's got the leniency of the administration at ND. If he goes 3 - 9 or something equally as terrible this year what do they do? Wait for his prized recruiting classes to get to sr and jr status? Or do they fire him and bring in someone who actually is a good coach, and not someone who claims to be. I said this before, it will be scary when ND fires Weis and brings in a good coach with all that talent that they've been assembling.

So, I got my friend's rivals subscription. FWIW, they're reporting the following:
*** QB Dominick Britt was a late add for this weekend's visit. He doesn't, however, have an offer as of now. They also so that he's bringing HS teammate **** WR Roy Roundtree with him. Roundtree is a commit at Purdue. Both are teammates of current Michigan commit Brandon Moore, and target **** RB Michael Shaw.
Also, their recruiting dude seems to say that Terrence Robinson to Michigan is a done deal, and he'll be announcing Sunday.

He actually throws a nice deep ball - his film shows him hitting covered guys in stride. It seems like he's a better thrower than Feagin, but not nearly as athletic. Of course, not many people think Feagin is even a QB.
If we get one, we sort of need the other, as they're both far from sure things - if Britt would help us land Shaw, I'd be happy.

The one thing I like is that the coaching staff clearly thought he was good enough to throw regularly - even though they had Shaw at RB. He threw for a ton of yards in HS. Rumpel - I think the big thing is that, right now, we need bodies there. Right now, we have Threet and Cone (who should never even be allowed to look at a football). So esentially, we just have Threet. I think we need at least 2 QB's in this class just so that we don't have to put Cone on the field at any point. If we don't get Pryor, hopefully we land Feagin and Britt, and then get a highly-touted player next year.
It seems like Feagin would be more likely to suceed at a non-QB position - he seems considerably more athletic than Britt while being nowhere near as good a passer.

I agree the extension was really stupid. But at ND with their own football network they where desperate to stop the coaching merry-go-round they could easy become. I think they were afraid Weiss was just using ND to get a NFL head position. If ND shows just a little improvement this year there will be grumblings but I think they stick with him. He probably has 2 or 3 years to prove he is the coaching genius he thinks he is. This means at least 10-2 and in the NC hunt almost every year. Like the shirt says they still expect to return to glory and will keep changing coaches until they get there.

warning: rant over pet peeve: why give the score of the basketball game giving michigan's score first when they're behind?
give the score with the team that's ahead first, then the other one -- if it's michigan, so be it, we can handle it.
we are not so michigan-centric that we have to have scores given to us with michigan's score first. that's lame. i hate it when newspapers -- usually home town jobs -- do that.
maybe you did it to emphasize how far behind um was in a basketball game -- but that's old news.
am surprised cazzie russell was a gracious as he was for the ceremonies, seeing as how the um has passed him over repeatedly for head coaching vacancies. if i were him, i'd have been a no-show.
saw cazzie play against iu and the van arsdale twins in bloomington in february of '64 or '65 -- double overtime game, um won, 96-95.
and saw first game ever played in crisler arena -- um vs kentucky, adolph rupp's wildcats, with dan issel and louie dampier -- cats won big, but rudy tomjanovich got 30, as i recall.
give john bielein time --he'll get 'em turned around, but it won't be easy, or quick.

Unless we get Pryor, I believe that Threet will be starting every single game while Feagin/Britt/ whoever we get will come in for plays off the bench. Also, if we get Pryor I still see Threet starting, al la a more balanced Leak/Tebow combo.

Hey, as someone astutely pointed out, they get to meet with T-P tonight, then can go back and see what to do with Britt as far as offering him goes. IMO he'd commit on the spot if offered. He decommitted from Cinci 6 weeks ago when Demetrius Jones transferred there from ND ... and he cancelled another visit this weekend to go to U-M ... so he's primed ...
One thing to remember ... U-M took a pass on him a couple weeks ago ... now was the no-test-score a factor in that "thanks-but-no-thanks"? We'll have to see. A kid cannot take official visits without a test score recorded (no matter what the score). The score just came in less than 2 weeks ago -- and it was a 25.
Roy Roundtree. He's a Purdue commit of course, a Memorial Day commit there. But his mom has come along on this visit with him ... a serious sign ... and she likes U-M ...
IMO once again an offer-extended could mean a commit.
The DJ-Woods uh uh may come back to help U-M here ...

JHS,
With 18 commitments now (we took C-Wilson off the list ... just being honest .. nothing against Christian in fact I personally think he's a fantastic young man {met him both at Army Combine and U-M Camp week ...} and IMO he will be an excellent college player ... just not new-U-M) ...
k ... moving on ... getting to 25 looks like it could be fairly easy now IMO:
19. Terrence Robinson
20-22. Trotwood kids (if U-M decides to pull the trigger today) ... Britt, Roundtree, Shaw
23. Perry
24. Feagin
25 ... several possibilities ... Omameh, Odoma, McCalebb, Barnum, even Harper maybe, etc.
so it's easy ...
My point being -- adding Britt/Roundtree into the mix, if they get offered, makes 25 doable ... because one would assume it'd help a lot with Shaw as well.
also:
... hesitation on Roundtree could be if they think there's goon news coming on Odoms ... or if they decide to go with McCalebb.
... Ditto on hesitation with Britt as far as T-P/Feagin go.
-- Omameh sort is a wild-card factor in this, isn't he, but helps to get to the 25 ... and helps the assertion that getting to 25 shouldn't be hard. I just assume Barnum is a longieshot.

To be fair, I don't think it was T.S.'s passing that kept him so low in the draft...the kid is a midget and had a really bad bowl game. Generally speaking, he was pretty good at avoiding turnovers and was a good passer by the time he left. Combine that with the fact that he's not a typical dropback passer and worked (iirc) in the shotgun a lot of his career, and you got a late rounder.

I think Threet should be the full time starter to begin the '08 season (unless someone else is just unbelievable during summer practices). Whoever is the 2nd string athletic QB should be give 10-15 snaps a game out of a simplied play book (screens, options etc).
@geevee I pity you - I'd gag if I had to see the Horseshoe every day on my work commute. Luckily by me (cleveland-akron area) people are bigger browns/tribe/lebron honks then they are Buckeyes honks. But don't get me wrong they love the Bucks, but I'd say the Browns are number 1.

Yeah but Orlando Threet has had significantly more time out of HS. I'm implying here that he has had much better coaching for a longer period of time (that's if college coaches are always superior to HS... and I'm not sure if Reggie Ball's QB coach can be an improvement over a good HS coach.). He's more physically mature, stronger, and knows the system better than an incoming frosh. Don't forget he was also an Elite 11 ****
If he is the starter (I'd bet my salary on it), we'll see a passing-based spread perhaps with the occasional option-read play thrown in.

M-Flight,
good points, im not doubting his skills and strength that all..im just simply implying that he has as much game ex. as the freshman that are coming in. i also agree with you that he will be the starter although i dont see why everyone is jumping on the threet ship..you never know what RR can do with a feagin during the summer (not saying he will be amazing by any means) but maybe he will grasp the RR system quick

@Flight sci I co-sign on your last post.

Orlando you hit the nail on the head w/ the last line...it's about who will grasp the system the fastest and most efficiently. Who knows what will happen for the rest of the season, but I guess I'd put money on Threet understanding what RR's trying to do more than the others by the start of the season. I'd find it hard to believe any guy who is currently there being beat out by Utah by a guy coming in during the summer.
Threet has the advantage of spring, playing against college scout teams and being coached by college coaches for over a year. If he doesn't understand the concepts by then, he probably doesn't deserve the position. I'm optimistic just because of his reported accuracy and experience w/ RR. Therefore consider me on the Threet ship out of simple rational thought...he just makes sense.

Not to mention he gets an entire winter and spring w/ Barwis. That probably won't help him as much as it'll help lineman and other more athletically challenging positions, but I'd say his conditioning level won't be questioned.

Orlando,
I think people are jumping on the Threet bandwagon because 1) He would have gotten a Michigan offer had we not gotten Mallett, 2) He was a 4** Elite 11 QB, 3) Cone extremely sucks, so there's no way in Hell we'd want him on the field. He's a 4 year clip holding QB lol
Threet has practiced with the team the entire season this year and even though they are bringing into a totally new scheme and philosophy, you can't take away the fact that he has been practicing with the team already. Add this year's spring and summer ball to that as well as 9 months working with Barwis and I see Threet being the #1 QB next year.
I also posted this earlier, but I'll just say it again in better detail-
According to CBS, teams average about 60 plays a game on offense. If we get any of the Britt/Feagin/Pryor, I imagine we'll run a good 50 plays or so with Threet of the passing oriented spread offense. By that I mean the QB won't run, but we'll still have plenty of HB zone reads and fly sweeps and such. The other 10 plays or so would be 'Tebow Time' so to speak. Plays where the other QB (Britt/Feagin/Pryor) came in to run some zone reads, trick plays, and other ideas that RR has.

Orlando - I didn't get that vibe from you at all. I understand your point and I agree with it in general. However, as fans, we can easily "bank" on Threet b/c we're not actually making the decisions. Because it seems to be the most logical out of all of our options, why not envision a future 2008 offense w/ Threet at the helm? Judging from that players' quote from a while back, seems like the existing teammates are behind him. He gets time to work with all of the receivers wrt timing and accuracy, including Stonum who is already enrolled. I know I'm not giving up on everyone else...frankly, you can't give up on guys that haven't even committed here.

My bad if I made you seem anti-Threet Orlando, but I think Threet's being handed it by default RIGHT NOW. Just because his only competition is Cone. Say the QBs report to Michigan on June 26 (Just using this date because that's when my cousin has to recruit to Louisville), they'll only have 2 months to lift with Barwis, get accustomed to college speed, to their team, and master the playbook. Threet will already have had a year and a half (including GT) of college lifting, and working with his team so he'll understandably have the edge to start on the first day. I don't how we'll look at QB at the end of the season but I'm betting that if we don't get Pryor, Threet will start the opener vs Utah.

from wtka...
a guy calls up who i think is jim stepnowski. anyway, he doesn't know where pryor goes, but says the real test for RR is next years QB class (09). he thinks there's 2 big time guys (5* i guess) and 2-3 others (top100 maybe) whom RR will be going after.
one kid is more of a passer from tampa, FL. the other is the kid from Cy-something TEx (more of a runner, yea same area as mcguffie). the key will be if the Tex kid accepts a UT offer on the 10th at the UT JR weekend. Beaver says they brought up the FL OL this weekend to get an 'in' w/ the HS of the 09FL kid (same HS obvs). also says there another forcier from Cal who could be an option.
i think the point is, there's life after RoJ--- i mean TP.

If Threet, who has 4 years of eligibility left, is the full time starter this year, which appears likely--won't that impede our ability to get a top QB in the class of '09? How could it not?
Who wants to sit behind Threet for 3 years? If Threet has a full year of starting next year under his belt, what are the chances he gets supplanted as the starter in '09 by a dual threat guy who is is more of a fit for RR's system--not very good.
I think our chances of landing a top QB will be better two years from now.
Maybe someone else has a different take, but I think we may well be stuck with Threet as the starter for 4 years.
Murl |

I'd agree w/ Murl that if we don't get Pryor this year, that makes Threet the presumptive starter for 4 years - I'm not sure why someone would come in to caddy for 3 years (though Henne came in to, presumptively, caddy for Guttierez for 3 years). Getting or not getting Pryor doesn't help us get a QB next year, if Threet plays alright.

if Threet plays alright.
big if.
but if these guys are 5* type guys in 09, then they won't be too worried about one guy ahead of them. TP isn't sweating Henton in Cowbus. henson wasn't sweating brady. either way, the depth chart is not deep in 09. if we do get TP, or even if we don't...coner may xfer anyway... unless he wants to be a sheridan guy who just wants a coaching internship for 4 years.
either way, the bigger test is 09...if RR gets a big time QB in 09 on the way to a top5 class, we'll know what level of recruiter he is. i think the fact that TP is deferring his commit date says a lot.

Just b/c Threet will be the starting QB doesn't mean we won't be able to recruit at the position anymore. Plenty of guys will give us a real good look, especially the dual threat QB's. DanK is right, especially when your a confident 4*, 5* you won't sweat a guy ahead of you. And I don't think we should assume Threet will be a starting QB for 4 years.

If this kid in TX has a chance to go play there, where McCoy will be a Senior during his freshman year, and there are no feasible options other than him, why would he come here to get in a slap-fight with Pryor for 3 years?
Why do think Texas replaced Young with a freshman? It wasn't because Texas can't recruit - it's because for 2 entire classes, no one wanted to go there to get blocked by VY.

Just for comparison sake, because if we were to get Pryor, the situation would be somewhat similar to Texas getting Young.
Young replaced a 3-year starter (Chris Simms), and came into a situation with no real veteran to play. He was the #1 ranked recruit in the nation, according to Scout and Rivals. He started 4 years, obviously. Texas's QB recruiting in his year, and the ensuing 4 was as follows:
2002 - Young was the only QB in his class.
2003 - No QB recruits.
2004 - No QB recruits.
2005 - *** QB Colt McCoy - who redshirted.
2006 - *** QB Sherrod Harris, **** QB Jevan Snead, **** ATH John Chiles, who became a QB.
It's worth noting that, when Snead lost out to McCoy for the starting QB job as a true freshman, he transferred to Ole Miss.
So, they got Young, and couldn't recruit a QB for the following 2 seasons. When they did get one, it was an after-thought *** local kid. Now, admittedly, that after-thought turned into a good player (McCoy), but no D-I school out of the state of Texas even recruited him.
