Whoa, only 10 million? Don't sell the generalissimus short there.
Quick estimates via Google:
"Approximately 20 million, including 14.5 million needlessly starved to death" (http://www.moreorless.au.com/killers/stalin.html)
"...somewhere between 15 to 20 million." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
Joseph_Stalin#Number_of_victims)
"I calculate that Stalin murdered about 43,000,000 citizens and foreigners" (http://freedomspeace.blogspot.com/2005/04/how-
many-did-stalin-really-murder.html)
"The estimates of Russian deaths under Joseph Stalin are estimated to be 40 million" (http://www.fff.org/freedom/0295a.asp)
Sorry, that's just an item of particular interest to me.

I'd vote for blimpy's as well, although I'm sure I'd miss most of the third quarter standing in line.
It would be fun to watch that woman who works there insult the opposing fans.

Just curious, why exile PSU to the Big East? Why not ship Northwestern to the MAC?
This is not helping the PSU paranoia that the rest of the conference hates us.

blimpy stories...
2 of us in line...we grab a pile of napkins each. we get up to the register (which happened to be operated by the owner) and he says, 'that's way too many napkins'....takes them all off our trays, and gives us one each (i go for the quint, and my friend gets the p-s bullet...NO WAAAAY you get through either of those meals on ONE napkin).
also, i don't like ketchup, so i say to the condoment guy...'just give my ketchup to this guy'.....owner says no..and that my friend can come back, show him his ketchup cup ...and if it's cleaned out, then he can have another ketchup.
dude makes the soup nazi look like mary freakin' poppins.

Beer? Would it be the end of the world if you could get a beer at the Big House?
I'll tell you what I didn't like and that was the Little Ceasar's Pizzas. The boxes became the worst of the projectiles I've been hit with--excepting the full cup of coke complete with lid.
Whatever, on the concessions anyway. I had season tickets for 6 years and don't think I ever bought anything. As I recall, if you left the student section during the first half you weren't getting back in, let alone near "your" seats, until half time. I missed a 70+ TD run by Wheatley against PSU ('94?) and that was the end of getting trapped in the tunnel for me (what's going on? why is everyone cheering? how'd we get 6?)
Blimpy may sound good but just imagine thousands of drunk students jumping around after devouring one of those. Enough people booting in the stands already.

Oh, that Wheatley run was a thing of beauty. That '94 Penn State game was the greatest football game I've seen in person (despite the outcome). It had everything. Momentum changed dramatically. It was a shame that we lost it, but PSU earned the win. I suppose it was a bigger shame that Todd Collins threw a two-yard interception on 4th and 8 to end the game, but whatever. We had front row seats in the student section that year and were planning to leap onto the field upon a Michigan victory solely out of concern for our personal safety.
Brian, I have never heard of Big Ten Burrito, nor BTB. (A) Where is the place? (B) When did it open? Thanks for making me feel old!
I am still lamenting the loss of Panchero's. I came back to visit in the fall of '97 and they had completely changed their menu. The place was terrible after that and soon went out of business. I still have dreams of El Gordo and the old guy with the wrist brace and mustache cooking up chorizo...

yea, mike...i don't hate PSU either...i think they fit in real well with the conference. and geographically, they fit better than iowa, Minn.
i always liked the vanilla-ness of PSU. very classy. Gary Cooper-esq. old-school classy. but, there's always a catch...PSU has an MSU-level inferiority complex. it's just not fair to compare PSU, MSU with Michigan.
and enough with the drop NU sentiment. they have better athletics than MSU, and PU and Iowa and Ill, IU. if i had a preference, i'd drop PU, Iowa, MSU or OSU. in that order i guess.

I'm not sure I understand talk of PSU not belonging in the B10, or having the mental issues of MSU. Wha??? PSU went to the Orange bowl in '05, and were 1 second from being undefeated. We've been lucky on several occasions, and they've always been a great opponent for OSU. They have an enormous recruiting bed... PSU stock is a little down at the moment, but they have much more upside than anyone in the conference. Of course, I'm talking only football here. I'm clueless about other sports.

Mike: it's a matter of conference tradition, I guess, and a desire for the revamped Big East to be a conference on a par with the others. Despite the recent successes they've had, the BE still lacks sex appeal. Take it as a compliment.

Brian,
Good call on BTB. I made a case for them on EDSBS Live last week as a crucial and essential part of one's Michigan gameday experience. Then again, based on things I have said and you have written, I think they have finally come around to the idea that we're the Scandinavians of major college football fans. Except we like burritos the size of our forearms.

I have had a question for quite sometime and I will ask it now. Ohio St. had 2 scandals that seemed to be "swept under the rug." Clarett stating that he work for tressel's brother for a car dealership when he didn't but still was paid. the other involved a basketball recruit being paid. Why don't they have to pay like michigan's program did even after everyone form that era was gone we still were put on probation. anyone know why?

I disagree totally that PSU makes more sense in the B10 than Iowa or Minnesota. Aside from the fact that both schools have been part of the B10 for a long, long time, the citizens in every Big Ten state have always thought of themselves as residents of the Midwest, whether from Iowa in the west, Minny and Wisky in the north, or Ohio to the south. The Big Ten is the archtypical Midwestern conference, and in a more complete sense than the B12, which has all the Texas teams. I know people from PA, and they've never thought for a moment that they are "Midwestern." That goes especially for PSU, located a lot farther east than Pitt. State College is a helluva lot closer to Philly and NYC and Maryland than it is to OSU, the nearest B10 competitor.
Look at PSU's historical opponents prior to joining the B10, and you'll see long-time rivalries with BC, Maryland, West Virginia, Rutgers, Syracuse, and Pitt where they played most every year going back decades, if not a century. None of those teams would normally be described as midwestern. PSU's tradition was always as an eastern team, not midwestern. It's crime that the rivalry with Pitt has been pruned back substantially; that's one of of the great historical rivalries in college football.
I am NOT saying that PSU is not worthy of being in the B10; there's no question in my mind that its presence in football has made the conference much tougher. But it's a school with a thoroughly eastern tradition in football grafted onto the country's most midwestern major football conference. If PSU were to leave for the Big East or independence, then conference scheduling becomes more sensible for the remaining 10 teams.
Although we'd have to get rid of that clever B10 logo....

Don - I agree with you that PSU's football tradition as well as a large part of their fan/student base is eastern. But as a large public land grant university, it is the antithesis of the eastern universities (smaller and generally private); on top of that, the style of football is very mid-western.
So, ultimately, its a good fit, but a bit strained at times.

Penn State it a midwestern university inside the eastern region. As a university it is much more in line with the Big Ten than the eastern schools. Heck, even Pitt is more of an eastern school than Penn State.

Panchero's sucks now. they decided to go all Q-doba-ish and Chiptoleish and get rid of refried beans for pinto beans. and then add in "fresh" food. the demise of any good burrito place. I also can't believe that Taco Bell went out of business on Church (or E.Univ?).

taco bell was east u. they're out of business? bummer... i used to love the burrito supremes. pancheros was still good at least through may 99 when i graduated. i've had many a late night el gordo. unless, of course, the bk next door had $1 whoppers, in which case we loaded up on those. never heard of big ten burrito. then again, i was rarely in the packard/hill area since i and most of my friends lived around geddes/washtenaw/algonquin.

I'm not actually sure that Taco Bell "went out of business;" I don't think lack of income was their problem. Rumor I heard was they got shut down for health code violations (and rumormongering is what the internets are for!) Even if not, you gotta admit that place was pretty sketchy. Same thing with the McDonalds that had been on South U, now also defuct (and replaced by Bubble Island).
Bagel Fragel still exists; it's just up on North Campus now, so only the artists and engineers get to enjoy its delicious gooey sugary goodness (like I did this morning).
But the restaurant I lament the most (speaking of places that closed before any of the current undergrads had even finished high school) is Little Caesar's in the Union and at Pierpont. The $5 large was the Wednesday (Tuesday?) student special long before that became a franchise-wide every day thing. And on that note, $14 (or is it $16 now?) for a medium at the stadium is an absolute travesty, especially because what they pawn there is even lower grade than regular Domino's. A BTB at the Big House, on the other hand, would be absolute gold.

Not that this needs to turn into the Deadspin burrito thread or anything, but Panchero's is decidedly meh at the moment. BTB, for me at least, was great all through freshman year and then got a little iffy with ingredient quality (the chicken and steak always seemed to be the fat instead of the actual meat...or the burnt ends) and I recently started going back and doing custom orders, getting veggies and no beans, and they've hit that top notch again. Also, I must say that anyone who equates Qdoba's thorough lack of quality with Chipotle's also top notch deliciousity...well. We just can't be friends.
I would like to clarify that a Chipotle burrito and a BTB burrito are hardly the same animal. The dude who made the dismissive Qdoba/Chpotle zing IS right to note that the approach is decidely different. The result, however, is that BTB and Chipotle come out on top.

Dan, love the blimpy stories. I've had similar experiences (who hasn't) but nothing like that ketchup story.
I moved away from A2 a couple years ago and that's one of maybe 3-4 dining experiences that I truely miss. BTB is right up there also. I live in Minneapolis. They need to get that place going here. Maybe by the time the new stadium is built. Possible business opportunity....hmmm...

For a writer about a school with less Bowl Victories in its history (18) than Joe Paterno (22) to claim that PSU has an inferiority complex is a bit off the mark, I think.
Michigan: We win the games that count (except for Ohio State, or the Rose Bowl).
