Beyond excited. (Keep English!!)

Gravatar Full quote from Mallett's dad in the Free Press:

Mallett's father, Jim, said he spoke to his son and "it's just wait and see." Jim Mallett said his son planned to meet with Rodriguez.

"At this point," the father said, "he's Michigan all the way."

Gravatar Thank God for RichRod. Now instead of spending most of my work hours on MGoBlog worrying about who our next coach will be, I can spend most of my work hours on MGoBlog obsessing over our new coach and how Michigan will look in the RichRod era. Great day to be a Michigan Wolverine. GO BLUE!

Gravatar Can we get an OSU UFR now?

Gravatar Did you mean to say that Glenville State was 65-70% pass?

W00t regardless.

Gravatar I haven't felt this way since the Red Sox won the World Series in 2004.

I see it, I understand it...I just can't comprehend it. This is the sort of thing that happens for fans of other teams, you know?

Gravatar Few things:

1. I read that Calvin Magee (WVU OC/RB coach/Asst. Head Coach) was staying in Morgantown running the teams' practice while RR was here. Wouldn't that suggest he's not part of the package? Either way, I don't think it's a big deal, because Magee wasn't OC until last year, and RR actually held the title until then. RR still has called as his plays the past two years, so Magee is more of an RB Coach/OC in-name-only. Still. Keeping Freddy Jackson would improve our shot of keeping McGuffie, from what I understand.

2. Wouldn't worry about him calling WVU "us". The guy is from WV, went to WVU, played football at WVU, and coached at WVU. They've been "us" to him since he could walk. We can give him a break in his first 10 minutes as coach.

3. Count me as a "keep Ron English" supporter.

4. If Terelle Pryor shows up, Mallett needs to be very, very, very, very, very worried.

Gravatar HE JUST REFERRED TO HIMSELF IN THE 3RD PERSON!! SWEET!

Gravatar Calvin Magee is at the presser with RichRod. Hopefully he takes Debord's job and not Fred Jackson's.

Gravatar I thought this was an interesting note as well... (from the freep's recent article on this morning's presser)

"Rodriguez's birthplace isn't far from Fairview, where U-M legend Fielding H. Yost was born in 1871."

Let's hope the similarities don't stop there...

Gravatar UFR UFR UFR

Gravatar Johnny, I agree. I don't think Michigan fans truly understand what a good coach this guy is. to find a coach whose STRENGTH is offense, conditioning and player development is stunning. Developed here: http://www.logictimes.com/Blue/B...-I-Am- Sorry.htm

Gravatar this guy is a loon

i like him

Gravatar Merry Fuc#@$n Christmas to me.

Gravatar My hope:
HC=RichRod, OC=Magee, DC=English, S&C=Barwis, RB=Fred Jackson
As for the rest... ???

Gravatar OMG OMG OMG OMG I'm giddy like a school girl.

Gravatar I'm still trying to figure out the support for Ron English...the guy has done nothing on the field to improve the UM defense....but he can recruit.

Gravatar Can someone please explain this Lion King thing? I have it taping, but can't watch until after work.

Gravatar He's talking about Marques Slocum and his "lion".

Gravatar haha, why does espn still talk to beeno cook?

Gravatar Williams...good point. He's likeable, agressive and a great recruiter... and I think was greatly restrained by Carr.

Gravatar Michigan's D has been solid against traditional offenses. RichRod should be able improve English's schemes when it comes to the spread. BTW, Tony Gibson (WVU defensive backs coach/recruiting specialist) was also in attendance at the presser, correct?

Gravatar Dan,

Could be. Do you think he'll stay? I doubt it.

Gravatar Beano Cook is senile.

I'm am SO pumped. FUCK YEAH!

Gravatar I don't thing Magee really matters. The guy is a glorified RB-coach. How many OC's don't call their own plays? His only real "benefit" would be that it puts the final nail in DeBord's coffin, but that's sort of a foregone conclusion - Magee or no Magee. I just want the S&C guy.

All along, I said I'd be OK if we retained English, Jackson, Erik Campbell (WR coach), and Scott Loeffler. Our Rb's, WR's, and QB's have been of extremely high quality for awhile, so I think those guys do a good job. I'm less sold on Loeffler with RR as the head coach, merely because I'm not sure how his coaching methods would dovetail with RR. But still...

Gravatar WTF Beano? He is such an idiot...Big East more difficult than the Big Ten?

Is he on crack?

Gravatar \why does espn still talk to beeno cook?//

So they can get some insight on what the childhood of Fielding Yost was like.

Gravatar What happens to Loeffler? He seems like a good coach....does he return home to Ohio?

Gravatar God wants coach Rod in AA.

"Withhold not correction from a child: for if thou strike him with the rod, he shall not die. Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and deliver his soul from hell." (Proverbs 23:13-14)

Gravatar I don't buy the argument that "RR would improve English" by all accounts, RR knows not a thing about defense.

Gravatar This is from a PSU board. WOOHOOOO

And they will follow

Holy smokes. Its early but wow!

Parkersburg, W.Va., five-star prospect Josh Jenkins told us later in the day that Calvin Magee and Tony Gibson were also heading to Ann Arbor. Jenkins told us that he like Pryor will check into Michigan now.

We also spoke to Strongsville, Ohio wide receiver D.J. Woods father Derrick tells us that S&C Mike Barwis is also headed to Michigan and D.J. is now a soft commit to the Mountaineers.

After talking to Jenkins again, we learned that Rick Trickett and Jimbo Fisher had surfaced as names to watch in the WVU coaching search.

Pryor is coming off of a state championship as he helped lead the Jeannette Jayhawks to a 49-21 win over Dumore in the PIAA Class AA Finals.

Gravatar Do you think Brian will return to posting UFR's and Recruiting Updates now?

Gravatar \RR knows not a thing about defense.//

Aside from playing on the defensive side of the ball as a player under Nehlen in college, you mean?

Gravatar WVA fans are pissed at Nehlen.

Gravatar Just having Coach Rod around would help our defense against the spread - you can't prepare that great for an offense that you can't practice against.

Gravatar RR knows not a thing about defense.//

--

Dude.. English will face his offense everyday! EVERYDAY. Don't u think he'll be better prepared ?!

Gravatar Williams,

There are no games. So no, I don't think we'll se a UFR until after the bowl game. If he were going to do an OSU UFR, he would have.

We are in "the recruiting dead period" right now. We're not allowed to visit anyone. So there shouldn't be many recruiting updates. I'm sure that if any WVU recruits talk to the press about how Michigan is now a possibility, Brian will report that, but there won't be any news beyond that.

Gravatar I've waited a month for the OSU UFR.

Gravatar re: UFR

Reading it would be like revisiting a bad dream....we will not be that team anymore.

Speaking of bad dreams, I didn't just hear a rap based on John Denver samples, did I?

Gravatar Go look at the Mountaineer S&C records on their S&C site....WR Denis Reynaud put up some absolutely sick numbers...when the WVU S&C guy manages to install his regime in AA...look out...

Gravatar When is the dead period over?

Gravatar Obviously RichRod's strength is his offensive prowess, but I think he's been around the game as a HC (where you need to know a thing or two about all facets of the game) that he can at least help English scheme a defense that can stop the very offense that he runs himself.

Gravatar IndiaBlue - the defense faces a scout-team running the upcoming opponent's offense. Not their own, seeing as the liklihood of our defense having to stop our offense are slim.

Gravatar Who wants the UFR? Who cares? Forget about it, move on.

Gravatar I've read every UFR and I know I'm not the only one who would like to see the OSU UFR if Brian sees fit.

Gravatar Beano's main argument for why the Big Ten is weak is that they play a weak OOC schedule. Hmmm, not such a strong argument there.

Gravatar Does this mean no more chimp references?

Gravatar seriously, who WANTS to see that OSU UFR??

To quote a certain head coach "Doesn't matter, it's in the past"

Gravatar I've waited a month for the OSU UFR.
Williams | 12.17.07 - 10:08 am | #

Right... but you're a self-avowed OSU-fan who wants it to merely bask in your slog-fest victory...

I just don't think Brian is inclined or eager to write up the UFR from that slop-tastic, crapfest of a game (yes, I was there, and it blew)

so, anyway, i guess you can continue to post a request for the OSU UFR on every thread, every day, multiple times, but i would guess, if Brian is so inclined you'll get it when he's good and ready...

Gravatar Williams, I find it unlikely that there will be an OSU UFR.

Dead period is 12/18 to 1/3.

1/4-1/6 is a "quiet period" where contact can be made via phone.

1/7-1/10 is another dead period.

1/11-1/12 is another quiet period.

1/13-2/2 is full on recruiting time.

Gravatar RHammer,
Actually I've read every UFR since the days of Massey just to see what Brian would come up with next to describe Massey's play. I really appreciate Brian's work.

Gravatar Gods do I ever hope that RichRod brings his S&C guy. Or someone else's S&C guy. Or goes down to Meijer and grabs some guy leafing through Men's Fitness. Pleeeeeeze!

Gravatar Wow that's alot of quiet/dead period leading up to decision day.

Gravatar Where is Chunks ?

Gravatar Squid

I have a subscription to Men's Health...

Gravatar Williams -
sorry, didn't mean to sound dickish... but I'm just saying...

Gravatar RHammer,
Understood. I like the RR hire. I wanna be in Cbus for the game to see WV fan come up from Morgantown. Should be quite a sight.

Gravatar \when the WVU S&C guy manages to install his regime in AA...look out//

We will have a QB who can bench-press Tim Tebow WHILE Tim Tebow bench-presses 450 pounds!!!

Gravatar Today is my birthday. What a great present.

Gravatar Who gives a damn about the OSU UFR? It's a lame duck, and a miserable one at that.

But if you insist, here is a suggestion to simulate the experience:

1. Pound nails through dick
2. Cry softly

Gravatar @mgobleu

Up until a couple of days ago the AD should have hired you in a heartbeat.

Gravatar ...its probably easy to underestimate (as an OSU fan) how little we might want to revisit that particular game, for a number of reasons.

we all definitely appreciate brian's work, read the UFRs, bought the book (and t-shirts), etc... but my guess is that he 'might' be working on it slowly, but it is probably not a priority at all, due to the emotional and (lack of) predictive value of that particular UFR on future games (which is also a large part of the UFR's value - how this game may translate to future games/matchups)

anyway, just my $0.02

Gravatar Obviously it irks me when a Cleveland boy goes to UM and reading Brian's UFR was a guilty pleasure when he ripped Massey ruthlessly.

Gravatar JeremyB - Williams is an OSU fan, so the experience was probably extremely different for him.

Gravatar I think I remember reading or getting the feeling that Brian was not happy about NOT doing the last one or two UFRs last season and that it would not be happening again. Could be off though.

Gravatar After listening to the presser, it seemed like he left a slight window open for him to coach WV's bowl game. Very slight, but did anyone hear that? Although it sounds like he would prefer to get right to work at Michigan......

What an exciting hire. Whatever the record is, UM football is entering a new era. Some of this recruiting talk is the best of all...

Gravatar Jeremy,
Ouch.....no thanks...

Gravatar "the defense faces a scout-team running the upcoming opponent's offense. Not their own, seeing as the liklihood of our defense having to stop our offense are slim"

True Chitown.. but spread option simulation by RR will be much better than DeBored.

Gravatar cfaller96's Mea Culpa

For those of you who haven't argued with me in the past few weeks, you can move along, because I don't matter to you. For those who DID argue with me, let me start with this:

YOU WERE RIGHT. I WAS WRONG.

Let's just get that out of the way, right up front. 1000 cocktails and 1000 hat tips to everyone who "kept the faith." You are all stronger and better than me.

I was wrong to lose faith- in Bill Martin, in the allure of the Michigan job, in the ability of the AD to move past the Carr era. Martin DID know what he was doing, Martin DID want to make a change, and Martin DID pull off a fantastic hire. No more sailing jokes, because that mistake is forgiven. In fact, all is forgiven.

Congrats, Mr. Martin: you closed the deal and pulled it off. Wow, and a thousand apologies.

Gravatar I'm a Cleveland boy and went to UM, although not as a swinging gate D-lineman.

Gravatar I was thinking of buying a worst state ever tshirt for my buddy who is a UM fan.

Gravatar Oh, yeah, if I were Williams, I'd be begging for it. Well screw that guy. Don't give him the pleasure.

(Kidding, Williams, thanks for reading... asshole.)

Gravatar chi, are you insane? He has the number 4 defense nationally with a bunch of two stars.

Gravatar Can we get an OSU UFR now?

I have to say I kind of agree with this sentiment now. There can be no pleasure without pain. That is the Michigan way.

So after we're all done getting drunk on the glorious new Rodriguez era, let the OSU UFR serve as the next morning's coffee and aspirin, reminding us of how far we still have to go.

Gravatar Squid,
I merely said it irked me. I realize UM is a tremendous school. My buddy attended med school there and works at the UM hospital for his residency. I would have no problem sending my son to school at UM....to play football may be another story.

Gravatar "Ron" Franklin?

Gravatar Way to be a man, cfaller.....where are the rest of the mea culpas?

Gravatar Jeremy,
lol

Gravatar @MDan,
I think the #4 D is interesting, but I wonder how much of that is the fact that they play in a weaker conference. I'm not sure, I was just curious.

Gravatar I have a day off work, I have a new head football coach for my school, and I have a sense of hope that I have not had for a while. Winter blahs be damned.

By the way, if you hammered Mr. Martin for the search and you like the hire, you might do well to drop him a note of approval. It only seems fair.

Gravatar @Williams

No problemo. I was trying to set up some sort of joke there but got distracted by my job, which for some reason keeps interfering with my reading about football.

Carry on.

Gravatar williams-
i emailed brian two weeks after the game about tOSU UFR and he said it would be posted the following week (obviously that didn't happen as that would have been dec 5-9).

yes the game was painful--but i didn't freeze my ass off at michigan stadium that day for nothing. i'd like to see brian's analysis as well. some of us actually care about the nitty gritty details.

Gravatar Does this mean we can't refer to Bill Martin as SBM?

Gravatar Williams, I wouldn't send my kid to OSU med school though

Haha.. kidding.. not ;-D

Gravatar chi, are you insane? He has the number 4 defense nationally with a bunch of two stars.
Meeechigan Dan | Homepage | 12.17.07 - 10:21 am | #

The fact that they have a good defense doesn't mean that Rich Rodriguez is a great defensive mind. The man is their fucking Offensive coordinator (in practice, at least least, if not in title, the man creates their schemes and calls the plays), I doubt he schemes their defense

Gravatar He said he wanted to run the 3-3-5 Stack here like he did at WVU. Bye English.

Gravatar How bad was the weather that game? The pouring rain for 4 quarters would have been terrible to endure as a fan with nowhere to go and no way of moving for warmth.

Gravatar Kudos to cfaller for likely being the only member of the "Get me MArtin's head on a stick!" crowd to admit they were off.

Gravatar cfaller, good man!

UofMJersey, my most recent post on my blog is entitled, "Bill Martin, I Am Sorry!"

And I have sent him an e-mail begging forgiveness.

Gravatar @Ryan,
I didn't hear that part of the presser (I had to do some work) but if the 3-3-5 thing is true then I agree with you, English is probably cooked.

Gravatar Chitownblue,

Rich Rodriguez was the defensive coordinator at Salem College back in '88(at the age of 23!). Not a whole lot of info, but he's clearly not out of his element on defense - considering he played and coached that side of the ball.

Gravatar chi, I, too, have admitted is was COMPLETELY wrong about the man. Couldn't be happier to be a no-nothing shit on this one.

Gravatar He was the linebacker's coach under Nehlen for a year at West Virginia.

Gravatar Meeechigan Dan....I did see that. Well done.

Gravatar I went to WV football camp when Nehlen was there...seemed like a nice guy...they are going to run him out of town after his comments.

Gravatar MDan - agreed, when I made the comment, I hadn't read your mea culpa.

Again - I wil agree with the statement that WVU has had a good defense, and has done so with mediocre/bad recruits. I just wonder if that credit can be layed at the feet of a man who is almost solely responsible for their offense for every game.

And I'm not trying to knock Rodriguez - I'm impossibly happy about this hire.

Gravatar What is bill martin's email again?

Gravatar Also, is it fair to say that Bill Martin will get his hands on the new Glengarry leads? He closed.

Gravatar How bad was the weather that game? The pouring rain for 4 quarters would have been terrible to endure as a fan with nowhere to go and no way of moving for warmth.
Williams | 12.17.07 - 10:26 am | #

it wasn't until the third quarter that my *bones* were actually cold...

it was hard to stay warm after that does that give you an idea? I was wishing it would just freaking snow on us already

(this coming from the guy who wore shorts to the 5-0 win over Purdue years back because I didn't want to wear soaked jeans the whole game though, so...)

Gravatar Just read more about WVU's S&C program. I am officially excited. It sounds like they actually train for, you know, football. I cannot wait to see what the S&C guy (assuming he's coming along for the ride) can do with Michigan's players. It's hard to tell if they're going to be rending opposing Big Ten teams limb from limb, but it seems safe to say that they're not going to look like they're running around with bags of sand tied to their ankles.

Gravatar i wonder to what extent we'll need to update the weight room... and how long that'll take.

didn't the HIT program git ran involve lots of soloflex-like plyo machines? we'll have to move all that shite to the CCRB or something to make room for the good-ol' fashioned bars and plates

Gravatar He gets the Caddy! Bertmann gets the steak knives.

I don't buy the argument that "RR would improve English" by all accounts, RR knows not a thing about defense.

I think the point is more of a RichRod can explain to English what defensive philosophy/emphasis would drive a spread offense playcaller crazy. Ultimately, from a defensive perspective, you want to throw the offense off and shake their confidence. I speculate that English doesn't know how to do that, and Rodriguez can tell from personal experience what keeps him up at night.

So in that sense, I do think that Rodriguez would help English improve his defensing of the spread.

Gravatar not to mention actually spending the $$$ to get the stuff

Gravatar OK OK,

I will back of my extreme statement that "Rodriguez likely knows nothing about defense."

I guess what I mean to say is that this is a Head Coach who, until 2 years ago, also held the title of OC. He gave the OC title to his RB coach when he was courted by outside schools. Rodriguez still calls the offensive plays, and, obviously, the scheme is his.

I just think it would be tough for a guy to pull double-duty as head coach and OC AND play a huge role in the defense. I'm sure he can impart basic philosophy (ie - "we want to blitz alot", and the like), but doubt he comes up with overall schemes for each game.

Gravatar RR is on 97.1 right now being interviewed.

Gravatar at the OSU game we were packed in so tightly that my legs stayed relatively dry. but it is impossible to avoid the rain when you are standing in it for 4 hours. hands were cold, so very cold...

Gravatar So now can Brian do a Profile in Heroism? Or would that still incurr the curse?

w00t

Gravatar will RR's morning presser be available online anytime soon?

Gravatar The 3-3-5 utilizes speed and movement and sacrifices size. It will be interesting to see how this does in the Big 10....guys like Mouton should flourish in this system whereas once he was an undersized linebacker for Carr, he is the prototypical linebacker for the 3-3-5.

Gravatar For comedy's sake I'd like to see a profile in Cronyism on DeBord.

Gravatar RR saying the right things during 97.1 interview (The Ticket)

Gravatar Rhammer
(this coming from the guy who wore shorts to the 5-0 win over Purdue years back because I didn't want to wear soaked jeans the whole game though, so...)

Ugh. That Purdue game was the WORST game I've ever experienced, weatherwise (come to think of it, though, the game itself wasn't too good either). Took me two days to thaw out after that one.

Gravatar Considering that the NFL ends up turning some of our safeties into LB's, I wouldn't be upset to see us use somewhat smaller, faster dudes at LB.

Gravatar How would you have liked to be at the Browns game yesterday? Cold, snowing, players slipping, nothing resembling football......

Gravatar Did I miss the joke on RR and peanut butter jelly time? Is there something that ties them together or is just the only proper way to celebrate this monumental occasion?

You think RR will come in and do some amazing things like start his own coach backed campaign to end the GD3DKP? Or even better, he could kill the worst cheer in all of sports history, the wave! OR OMG HE COULD MOVE THE STUDENT SECTION TO A PLACE WHERE IT WILL HAVE MORE OF AN EFFECT ON LOUDNESS!!!

I'd take any of those over a cure to cancer or aids.

Gravatar English or no English, I bet our D looks night & day different with some real S&C.

Gravatar Chitown,
Faster linebackers are definitely a benefit and with 5 of them you never know which gap they are going to hit. This makes it almost impossible to defend against an all out blitz.

Gravatar @RHammer

One word: Nautilus

Seriously though, I have no idea what actual equipment UM uses for S&C. Whatever it is, I can't wait for the moving truck. It seems that, among other things, WVU trains with explosive Olympic lifting moves and powerlifting moves. A big room full of Olympic bars and plates sounds like the place to start. Maybe UM already has such or maybe they'll be getting such. Either way, actually using the equipment the right way is going to vastly improve UM players' explosiveness.

Gravatar To be fair, I'd take a fake UFR of plays Rodriguez would have called and make up bullshit on how the game would have ended. I still predict an M loss, but man watching Henne try to run a speed option would be funny enough as is.

Gravatar 97.1 asked RichRod if he can help M scheme defensively against the spread, specifically for the upcoming bowl game, and he responded saying it's mostly the players and personnel...

Gravatar Hey guys,
Been unable to post for almost a week.....did I miss anything?!?!?

MDan.....as always good read and interesting break down. At first, I thought you were stretching it a bit when you said Indiana talent, but the numbers/recruiting rankings seem to back that up...if I haven't said it before, I'll say it again: please keep writing.

Like most, I love this hire. Welcome to the innovation age, Michigan football. It will be a blast watching the spread on our side....oh yeah, and stronger, faster and better in shape players too.

This is a big time hire and a big step in the evolution of michigan football.

Gravatar chitownblue
I just think it would be tough for a guy to pull double-duty as head coach and OC AND play a huge role in the defense. I'm sure he can impart basic philosophy (ie - "we want to blitz alot", and the like), but doubt he comes up with overall schemes for each game.

I actually speculate that this is why English isn't going anywhere- RichRod might be more hands-off than Lloyd Carr presumably was.

OTOH, where is the whole "we're going to run the 3-3-5 defense" coming from? Did RichRod say that in his presser? If so, then I'm not sure what that means for English- as far as I know, English isn't familiar with that scheme, and may not be the best/most willing candidate to run it.

Gravatar The 3-3-5 would be interesting to see at Michigan - considering we have about 20 million trans-positional LB/Ss on the roster right now. A 3-3-5 will more or less look like a 3-4 on most occasions thanks to athletes we have.

Gravatar Bill Martin supposed to be on 97.1 too... actually he's on right now.

Gravatar I don't get the sense from RR's comments that he even wants to coach WV against OU.

Also, he is now regularly referring to M as "our", "we", "us", etc.

Example: "I spoke to Lloyd briefly, and he has a lot of respect and admiration for our university."

Gravatar If anything it would help our current depth or lack there of at DT. Rotating 4 guys at one spot rather than 4 at two would decrease how tired they get.

I'm still not sure we have enough safeties for that. I tried to figure out our dime package we might run against Florida, when Dutch is the dime back, things look sketchy.

Gravatar it being the 3-3-5 in my last post. damn antecedents.

Gravatar 1st: Apologies to Bill Martin and Mary Sue Coleman and hell, throw Lloyd Carr in there. You all delivered, and are letting RR bring the people he needs, I'm thrilled. My annual CoE gift will now have a Michigan Athletics matching gift.

2nd: I was praying Brian's presser post would be titled, "Hakuna Matata, Bitches! (unless you're tOSU, then worry, A LOT!).

3rd: The 3-3-5 does NOT mean English is gone. He has experience with it, and he is KEY to keeping the recruiting class in shape for this year. Will they sacrifice some recruits, yes, they would. However, if they are going to pay him anyway, I can't see them letting him go. He would benefit from a year with RRod as the HC, so I'd be willing to bet at the least he stays as an assistant HC, but I feel once RRod meets him he'll keep him on as DC.

4th: Ryan Mundy isn't a sellout. He was a returning 5th year senior that had already graduated. He wanted to play at UM but wasn't wanted. He took advantage of a rule (said rule is no longer allowed) to transfer as a graduate without having to sit a year. If anything, we should be praising him as proof that RichRod is a miracle worker. He gave us proof on the S&C issue and magically learned how to tackle and READ PLAY ACTION!

5th: I for one love the history of UM WRs and QBs becoming outstanding in the NFL. I would be sad to see strings of NFL failures to be like Michael Vick and Pat White roll through Ann Arbor. That said, I fully support whatever new offense is implemented. I have a feeling it will feature A LOT more passing here than at WVU. Michigan has around SIX 4 star or better receivers. WVU had a bunch of 2 star guys.

Gravatar 97.1: How much power did Lloyd and the search committee have?
BM: They did a good job of coming up with a pool of names. I would bounce names of Lloyd and he would give some feedback.

paraphrasing of course.

Gravatar RichRod said he wanted to run the stack but it came down to personnel, I think the secondary coach is the new DC.

Gravatar Daniel,

I for one hate our NFL history with QBs. For once, I'd like to see our QBs improve steadily while AT our university, and help their team win it all here at Michigan. I'd take a Tee Martin over a Tom Brady at the moment. (If you get my drift)

Gravatar Feedback like "Les Miles banged my wife and daughter."

Gravatar I really like the new coaches in the Big Ten. RR and Tressel are huge. Dantonio and Zook offer promise and Lynch took IU to a bowl...the only goat seems to be Brewster at Minny. I think Bielema is also a fine coach.

Gravatar I predict we lose one recruit: Christian Wilson.

Gravatar Feedback like "Les Miles banged my wife and daughter."
Chitownblue 00 | 12.17.07 - 10:54 am |

Comment of the year.

Gravatar sooooo, kind of a slow day, eh guys? no recruiting (dead period). bowl still 2 weeks away. hockey off for 2 weeks. basketball...no news there.

anyone see the baseball schedule? should be a good year.

oh wait, yeah...RichRod for HC. i'd tentatively say it's not a bad hire.

/fascitious facade

this is flippin awesome. is is september yet?

Ok, one honest question: why is it that explaining the RR loss to Pitt as 'pat white was injured' is duly justified, but explaining any LC loss as 'injuries were a factor' is apologizing/enabling?

Gravatar I don't see why a dude like Threet would bother to stay around either. But, he's already transferred, so he may be SOL.

Gravatar Let's say Rodriquez lands us the "Vince Young style" QB recruit Terelle Pryor. What do you think about a potential 2-QB system like Florida had with Leak & Tebow last year? Could also lead to some fun trick plays with Mallett under center and Pryor in the backfield or WR.

Gravatar I don't care if ANYONE on the staff is retained.
Maybe keep Jackson around if it means holding onto McGuffie. Other than that, whatever will allow RR to do his thing.
I certainly do NOT want some old guard second guessing the new guy "well, this is the way WE did this or that".
No way. Fuck that. It's morning in America again. Clean the house.

Gravatar So I'm sure this has already been posted...don't feel like reading through the messages....is there somewhere I can watch the presser. I slept in today and missed it...WHOOPS.

btw that remix of country roads is pretty bad ass lol. But now, he can sing D-Town Roads..take me home...

Gravatar The original cowbell guy,

That would work. Remember, we're running the same offense as Florida now (HAHAHAHAHAHA 41-14 HAHAHAHAHAHA)

Gravatar If we get Pryor, I would favor a 2-quarterback system as follows:

1. Terelle Pryor plays.
2. Ryan Mallett quietly weeps into a towel on the sideline.

I'm overstating things, clearly, but I'm less bullish on Mallett today, given our coach, then I was 2 weeks ago. I'd rather just have RR do what he does rather than try to fit shit around Mallett.

Gravatar Oh wow, people are talking about the Purdue game in '95. Here's my story:

I'm 11 years old, and haven't been to the Big House since I went to the M/Wash State game in '87 (as a 3 year old, so I remember nothing).

My dad gets two tickets because he's a Purdue grad and wants to take me. He goes in w/ thermal wear and rubber rain slicks and gets prepared for the snow/sleet + 40 mph winds. I go in a coat and jeans. The game sucks, people are yelling at Griese, and I'm a really cold 11 year old, and I bug my dad to leave. He consents and we go to the car, but we're parked in because we are in somebody's driveway. So the 2nd half we listen to in the car. At least I got my Bo Schembechler hat that I wanted.

Gravatar Let's all be honest, Williams, the OSU game was a shitty game for Ohio State. If that result had been a road win against any other Big Ten team, you'd be disappointed with the overall level of play. Granted, if Michigan won a shlockfest game against the Buckeyes, I'd be freakin' pumped, but only because it was a rival. Win 14-3 against Wisconsin in a boring ass game? Nice to get a win, but otherwise, meh. . .

In other words, no reason for a UFR.

Gravatar Tyrelle Pryor can and will play all over the field wherever he goes to school for at least the first year or two he's in college....so, if he comes here, some sort of Mallett/Threet and Pryor hybrid would make sense....i dont think its a slamdunk about Pryor following RR, but its good to actually be a player in his recruitment rather than seeing players at that caliber and style of game never be considered at UM.

Gravatar fair enough

Gravatar the 5-0 was as much fun as i've ever had at a michigan game

guess we wont see many of those anymore

Gravatar This Country Roads rap is the best thing ever.

Gravatar formerlyannonymous
I'm still not sure we have enough safeties for that. I tried to figure out our dime package we might run against Florida, when Dutch is the dime back, things look sketchy.

I've always felt that Harrison was a 'tweener guy, for example- not really fast enough to be a nickelback, not really big enough to be a safety. But perhaps in a 3-3-5 scheme he becomes that extra rover safety, where he's not primarily responsible for run/pass defense, he's simply there as a versatile support mechanism. For a guy like Harrison, the 3-3-5 scheme might actually be a blessing.

That's just off the top of my head, though, and I'm not a football expert. But my point is that I think Michigan has personnel that can succeed in the 3-3-5, if RichRod wanted that scheme in place. And I take it from the comments that RichRod has indeed said that he wants the 3-3-5 scheme implemented? I'm not local, so...

Gravatar I will say this:

I will shed tears of unadulterated joy the day I see a Michigan QB evade the pass-rush and turn what would have been a sack into a 10-15 yard scramble.

Gravatar I live in WPIAL country...Pryor is the real deal, if we land him........shit I giddy, if we don't ok--but I SURE AS HELL don't want him wearing Scarlet and Gray,

so RR recruit you ass off to get him here so we can do the whole Yankees/Red Sox thing of signing guys so the other guys don't get 'em.

Gravatar I actually thought Harrison played really well, overall, this year. I agree, he may be tested as a CB on the edge, but he does ok in the slot.

Gravatar How many rap songs include the words "stroll", the phrase "where the streets are safer" and a reference to the year 1863?

Gravatar Apparently I'll get so happy with a Pryor commit that I won't write English correctly.

Gravatar The fifth DB in the 3-3-5 is essentially a monster back that plays to the strong side of a formation to combat the run....

Gravatar @Chitown Blue-

10-15 yard scramble? Hell, I'd like to see a pass rush evaded and turned into a positive yardage play.

Gravatar I'd like to see a pass rush not turn into a fumble, int or "tacopants for heisman" highlight. (I'm lookin' your way, Mallett...)

Gravatar Somehow my posts on this thread have been done so under anonymous....whoops, sorry about that.

Anyway, haven't been able to post for almost a week. Have I missed anything?!?!?

MDan: Nice write-up. Good read as always. Thought maybe you were reaching w/ the Indiana Talent comment, but the numbers you provided back that up. I've said it before, but let me repeat: Please keep writing.

As far as Pryor, he can and will play everywhere on the field, wherever he goes to school, for the first year or two he's in college. I could see a Mallatt/Threet and Pryor hybrid for sure. Its no slam dunk that he will follow RR, but its good to be in the running for those types of talents. In the past, they would never consider Um and we would never consider them.

Welcome to modern football, Michigan football program.

Gravatar OK. Here's some little trivia which might be totally helpful to our recruiting him.

Pryor is Toney Clemon's cousin.

Gravatar 1. Good Hire
2. See Pitt vs WVU tape
3. Lmao at Richard Pryor to UM talk...Its a done deal. Osu

Gravatar Williams:

I agree about the coaches. Minnesota should have hired Lane Kiffin. (if RR fell through and Miles wasn't there I woulda liked to hire him too)

Gravatar Haha.. Son of Jorel. I'd like to taste your tears of unfathomable jealousy induced sadness.

Gravatar 00goblue00,

Try here...

http://www.mgoblue.com/multimedi...ge.aspx? id=1344

Gravatar Jorel, don't think so.

Gravatar The broadband here is slow here guys. ( They can call it "narrowband" ) . Can someone post screencaps of his press conference ?

Gravatar \watching Henne try to run a speed option would be funny enough as is.//

I understand that once Navarrasaurus Rex got up a head of steam it was actually capable of moving fairly swiftly.

With a 60-minute game divided into two 30-minute halves I just think we had that kind of time, though.

Gravatar I dunno. Not greatly impressed with this hire. RR can't win the big games--just like Lloyd.

Pitt and S. Florida whooped up pretty good on his team.

He's better than Debord, but so what? So is everyone else.

Gravatar New t-shirt:
Bill Martin: Not As Dumb As He Looks

Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa

Gravatar 'RR can't win the big games--'

raise your hand if you beat georgia in the sugar bowl.

OK, we have Mr. rodriquez, aaaaannnd no one else. kthxbye.

Gravatar SOJ,
He might not come to UM, but I'd hold off on the done deal to OSU talk......lots of conflicting reports about that......some have said he's actually eliminated OSU off his list in favor of WVA and Oregon.....while others say he's still going to OSU.....Michigan's move over the weekend certainly muddies the water a lot on how the TP recruitment is going to go.....the kid called recruiting beat writers, and told him to add UM to the top of the list, fer gawds's sake, so I'd hold off on buying your TP osu jerseys just yet..RR actually talked to TP before he spoke to his team to guage interest in him coming to UM w/ him, and TP allegedly was stoked about that....we'll see which way it goes......myself, I am not counting on it, but, like I said, its nice to see we're going to be in contention for players of that style and caliber from now on.....thats a big step, and a necessary one for us to succeed in the modern college football world.

Gravatar Apparently, RR has only coached one game this year, the Pitt game this year. All the other games the WVU have played in the last few years were coached by some other dude.

Gravatar EndZone, now I am just totally bummed out. I didn't know he sucked.

Gravatar hopefully those who keep harping on RR for losing to pitt aren't brian kelly fans, because the stache took him down this year too.

Gravatar Thanks Ryan!! I'll give it a try!!

Gravatar @Jamie Mac

good to see you finally got back on here !!

Gravatar please quit using the south fla game as an example of bad coaching. his team turned the ball over 6 times, and i doubt that those were designed turnovers called by RR. on top of that, pat white was hurt.

the pitt game - that is troubling. even w/o white they should have been able to beat pitt. but rivalry games don't always turn out with the more talented team winning.

if there is a coach available who never loses or makes a bad decision occasionally, i'll take him over RR. but to my knowledge there are no perfect coaches. we got one of the best available so lets be happy.

Gravatar @SOJ
Richard Pryor?

Gravatar \raise your hand if you beat georgia in the sugar bowl.//

*Raises hand*

Gravatar I see a three-loss season next year as the transition kicks in. But without Coach Rod here, I saw a five loss season.

And here's a name I haven't seen on here: Kevin Grady. Has anyone heard about how his rehab is going? And I wonder if he can play a big part in the new offense?

Gravatar I hope he works out and will support him, just am in wait and see mode.

If we get TP it will be fun to watch.

Gravatar MDan: Of course he sucked. The way he coached at WVU, I'm surprised he wasn't fired. The guy is a no-talent hack. Why do you think that Mountaineers, Buckeyes, Sparties, and Domers keep on coming here to tell us that (end sarcastic comments)

Gravatar Sad fact is that USF team would have finished in second place this year in the Big 10....lot of big time talent on that D, for sure.

And, someone beat me to the comment of the victory over the SEC champ in the Sugar Bowl....i believe Brady's senior year might be the only time a big 10 team beat an SEC Champ in football.

Gravatar "Ok, one honest question: why is it that explaining the RR loss to Pitt as 'pat white was injured' is duly justified, but explaining any LC loss as 'injuries were a factor' is apologizing/enabling?"

I'd explain it as Pat White fumbled the ball 4 times that game. Pat White also threw the ball out of bounds on 4th down at the end of that game. Who throws the ball OOB on 4th down?!?!? White got pulled from the game due to concussion, WVU couldn't do anything on offense, and then White came back in later in the 4thQ.

It's WVU folks, not a ton of depth there. RRod switched QBs and called some different plays, but the backup 1star QB couldn't do much at all (and the kicker sucked).

At UM, with injuries, there is depth to adapt and overcome. Leaving ineffective, inaccurate, INJURED Henne in against tOSU was borderline criminal. Mallett's a flake, but he could have thrown the ball downfield at least.

It's my personal belief that all the WVU comments about RichRod being a poor gametime coach is more about him being limited in his options. If the other team is stopping the run, which is rare anyway, do you attempt to throw with Pat White to a bunch of 2 star receivers?

Did anyone else notice RichRod sounding like a kid in a candy store when he talked about what he needed and saying that he was told it was either already being done or that it could be done no problem? For example, I'd expect all new weight equipment within a month, if not sooner. A place like WVU can't just spend $250,000 - $500,000 for a weight room like UM can.

Gravatar haha people are just scared that we got a good hire. Spartys dominance won't start, OSU's will probably end, and WV is just bitter!!

Gravatar K. Grady likes to fumble the ball a lot. He should just go tothe Lions now.

Gravatar Mallett would be foolish to transfer unless it is clear he is not going to play here.

RR is a very QB friendly coach - Shaun King anyone?

Also, he would have to sit out a year. Going from presumptive starter at a major football program to having to hold a clipboard for Bobby Petrino for a year seems like a huge sacrifice.

I would put it at less than 5% chance that Mallett transfers.

Also I don't understand why everyone is so down on Mallett's future.

He was bad last year as a freshman with some excellent glimpses. One of the things I liked most about Mallett was his ability to elude the rush and throw on the run. He had very good instincts on when to tuck and run as well.

I like his chances to improve (assuming he works hard over the summer). Somphmore Mallett will be much better than freshman Mallett and he will be in a very qb friendly system.

Gravatar Shit! Didn't you all hear?? Turn off peanut butter jelly time, Rodriguez sucks.

Gravatar EndZoneSeats,

He's better than anyone else we had been throwing around lately, and he's almost a guarantee to change Michigan football with the lowest downside. The guy has successfully run his system at multiple levels including 2 BCS schools. He lead WVU (not necessarily the best school on the east coast in football) to a couple Big East championships. He's won some big games (re: Rutgers '06, the last six games of '05 against all ranked opponents ending in WVU blow outs except georgia in the bowl game, which still was a W for WVU). To say he wins none is unfair.

Honestly the best part about RR is that the search is over and we got someone who in all likelihood will not make us any worse.

Gravatar look at all these apologists....the irony could be cut w/ a knife.

Gravatar EndZone:

I will give you the Pitt and USF games, but he did win some big games:

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/ re...ameId=273280277
(this one clinched the Big East--66-21)

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/ bo...ameId=260020061
(first BCS game for WVU - 382 yards rushing against UGA)

4-3 overall against Pitt is not great, but he isn't a complete big game choker.

Gravatar 00goblue00,
Thanks we'll see how long it lasts....the storm yesterday somehow knocked our work phones out, so this is a perfect time to get access to this board again.

But, in reviewing comments from other threads, I might keep whatever inside info I get to myself next time....lol....naw, I'll still post it!

Gravatar NO, RR sucks. We're doomed. Shoulda hired Debord.

Gravatar oh, and Gittleson, needed to keep that dude too.

Gravatar DanK:

He had worse talent than Purdue...and he beat Georgia and went 32-5 over 3 years. Both losses this year were turnover filled and with injuries, and it's not like he has depth to overcome injuries. That's not being an apologist, that's being a realist.

Gravatar Yo guys,

I was at skeeps last night and Big Tex told me that he was leaving. I then tried to convince him to stay....he's not. I still bought a round of Jaeger Bombs. Then we smoked some swisher sweats. Good shit.

Gravatar Gittleson for head coach!

Gravatar I'M MELTIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII IIIIIIING

Gravatar @Jamie Mac

Having a day off from customers nagging you is nice right? That storm yesterday was ridiculous. I had to shovel a foot of snow because I didn't know how to use this behemoth snow blower we have!!

hahah. Do it! Who cares if people don't like it or don't want to believe it!!

Gravatar I've renewed my addiction to these boards. Just when I thought I had lost interest, we go and hire a fucking coach. I hate you BM and MSC. I am no longer able to do work.

Gravatar Swisher sweats? Sounds gross.

Gravatar any word on mcguffie?

Gravatar A memo to our "little brothers":

RichRod vs. Dantonio: RR 38-0 and 42-24.

Gravatar Daniel L...well said. nonetheless, turnovers and injuries are always a part of why teams lose games.

Gravatar I'm worried that Rhett Rodriguez will actually be starting for us in 2017.

Gravatar DanK--That's true, which makes many fan's criticism of coaches so annoying, with both Carr and Rodriguez.

Gravatar Ryan:

Harbaugh's dad was a coach here too (albeit assistant).

He turned out ok...(bit of a mouth)

Gravatar DetUMICH,

for every Harbaugh there's a Jason Carr or Andy Moeller.

Gravatar Ryan:
touche, but we can all agree its better than the problem of James Ferentz....heheh.

Gravatar From an unobjective standpoint, I do put that Pitt loss on him, however. He forgot all about Steve Slaton and as Pitt stymied their O never really did much to counter it with adjustments....he kept throwing rock, if you will, but the crazy, loony spread running option kind.....they fell behind vs USF, but he came out passing a bit more to get back into the game....most WVA fans wonder why he did not try to do the same thing in the Pitt game....I know Brian owes us a UFR for OSU-UM, but maybe a UFR on Pitt-WVA would not be more revealing....just my 2 cents on the Pitt debacle....but D was not Pitt's problem this year. Say what you will but Pitt D this year was a top-20 caliber defense.

Gravatar How is everyone criticizing RR already? His losses at WVU have nothing to do with Michigan.
I guess some people never will be pleased with anything we do.

Gravatar NEW post!

Gravatar and I admit I was pissed with this search at first, but we ended up with a knock out, so I will eat crow now...

Gravatar and 'That's not being an apologist, that's being a realist.' is a line i've used several times.

honestly...i can't wait till all the 'RR==jesus' vs 'RR is crappy' stuff goes away and we can argue about TP latest statements about him coming to UM. only 8 weeks till signing day...

my ranking of HCs, based on resume, in order:

Carroll
Urban
Tressel
Stoops
spurier
RR
Saban
Richt
Mack Brown
tuberville
petrino
Kelley
Schiano
joePa
bowden
ferentz

did i forget anyone? is there any doubt RR is in the top 10?

Gravatar Jamie Mac, i cosign that last comment.

Gravatar Here's my concern with the 3-3-5 with our personnel.

Where do our defensive linemen fit in? Jamison, Taylor, and Johnson are all seniors and good players. Graham is the only non-senior of the bunch, but he's probably the most talented.

At the same time, we'll have young safeties and very little experience beyond Trent and Warren.

So who's the odd man out on the DL and who's our 5th defensive back?

Gravatar Hard to say what kind of intel this is based on, but from Rosenberg's piece:

"...the good news is that I expect assistant coaches Fred Jackson and Erik Campbell to stick around."

Someone send McGuffie those Noel Devine clips pronto.

Gravatar @ cfaller96

Thank you for being a man.

@ all the other Chicken Littles

Where are all your mea culpas? You don't have to apologize to me. But there were a lot of people who were dicks to anyone who said anything good - or even non-committal - about Bill Martin, Mary Sue Coleman, Lloyd Carr, etc.

I said we should wait until a press conference and find out who the ACTUAL coach is before we pass judgments.

I'm not saying "I told you so."

I'm saying, "Stop being dickholes when other people's opinions differ."

Gravatar Thank you, WVU. We owe you guys big time.

I think we got the best coach out there.
So glad we didn't hire Miles.

P.S. There are a LOT of columnists who hated on Michigan hard over the last few weeks who I will be very happy never to read again.

Gravatar @Magnus,
I will commend BM and MSC for their hire. I will not, however, let them off the hook and say they did so without blunders along the way.

Gravatar "There are a LOT of columnists who hated on Michigan hard over the last few weeks who I will be very happy never to read again."
I'm particularly looking forward to the assclown Drew Sharp choking on his own vomit

Gravatar Should I go through this again about how Slaton is not a big game running back whatsoever and shouldn't be trusted when the game is on the line?

Gravatar Apologist or not.
RR has lost 5 games in the last 3 seasons and has won his last 2 bowl games including a BCS game as a HUGE underdog. Teams will lose games and there will be reasons they lose. When you’re averaging less than 2 loses a season you don’t need so many excuses.

Michigan might very well lose 5 games this season and did lose 5 in 2005. Carr is 1-6 in his last 7 against OSU and is 1-5 in bowl games over that period. At this point, I’m not interested in excuses. Every team has problems and you’ve just got to perform better than that.

So, if an excuse for the Pitt game is necessary then I’ll take “QB got hurt.” But I won’t accept a string of excuses for the last 7 years of M football. If RR goes 0-5 against OSU and 1-4 in bowls or something then I won’t be making any excuses for him either.

Gravatar Again, dead periods just mean no in person contact at all. You can still talk to potential recruits by phone (or email, or text), and I expect RR will be on the phone quite a bit over the next few weeks.

Gravatar @ ATL Blue

My questions is, were they ACTUAL blunders or PERCEIVED blunders?

I'm not choosing either way, because I don't know what went on behind closed doors. But if the goal was to get a good/great coach and we got a good/great coach, then they achieved their goal.

Gravatar Regarding the UFR, I presume Brian does them to see what we can learn. Many may read them simply to relive the game but that is not the sole intent. I would read an OSU UFR but suspect there is very little to learn from most of the game that we don’t already know. It’s not the loss that bothers me because I’d love to read a UFR of the last Rose Bowl. It’s just the OSU game was such a horrible game. OSU wasn’t even trying for much of the game. Both QB’s were terrible (which makes me wonder if OSU fans would even enjoy it much) so there was lots of running. Sure Wells had 200 and a nice average but there is little to learn from that. It was also about as non-productive as 200 rushing yards can be. Both teams loaded the box. Both offenses had openings in the passing game. OSU chose to ignore the pass while M was incapable of executing a passing game. We already know all of this. The big question, why the M offense never tried anything more unusual or different than passing to the middle of the field cannot be answered by a UFR. It was a pathetic game. Continued performances like that will take the national luster off the rivalry to be sure.

Gravatar I can't wait. Saturday afternoons w/ Pacman and Cris Henry in AA. Hope you got plenty of white women.

Gravatar And all you "Michigan Men" can take your kneepads back. You won't need them to convince Les Miles,he of gargantuan BALLS, to come to UM.

Gravatar I was happy to see some praise (finally) out of Dan Shanoff. That guy hates him some Michigan.

Gravatar My questions is, were they ACTUAL blunders or PERCEIVED blunders?

Magnus, I tend towards your side on this one. The more I watched the fallout of the Miles debacle, the less I'm inclined to believe they made him any serious offer. I have a hard time believing that Bill Martin couldn't be reached unless he didn't want to be reached.

I fully acknowledge that I may be 100% wrong. But since they pulled off two vists we didn't know about until after the fact, I kind of think they had a plan and all the press and craziness of the Dec. 1 Miles fiasco was the kink.

Again, spitballing. Nothing may stick. But it's all irrelevant now.

Gravatar well i can say this about the spread, and its different manifestations...

I had to coordinate against 7 different spread teams this year.

there were maybe 2 common plays....

its is more adabtable to personel, then any other offense, by FAR!!

Gravatar 2 powers around here are ragsdale and mt tabor.

ragsdale, spread pass....

mt tabor, spread, no pass....

Gravatar someone sent us up the spread???

Gravatar Brian, a correction - it was Dennis Franklin (former U-M QB) who gave that quote about it being a good hire, not Ron Franklin.

Gravatar Saturday afternoons w/ Pacman and Cris Henry in AA. Hope you got plenty of white women.

Get some help. Seriously.

Gravatar The only thing I want is to chant LET'S GO BLUE in that goddamn, fucking shithole of a stadium in Columbutt Ohio next November.

I will NEVER forget those bastards taking over our stadium last month with that shitty O-H-I-O chant IN OUR FUCKING HOUSE!

If there is a God, let Rich Rodriguez be his chosen one!

Gravatar I hope Bill Martin doesn't give up sailing, and never figures out how to work his cell phone.
Some "Quiet Time" was obviously what he needed, out on the ocean, and it seems to have worked well for him. HAH!
Apparently, UM DID hire a "search firm", and they told UM to go get Rodriguez, immediately.
