Gravatar See, Everyone Cheats

Gravatar Fin. No more.

Thank the lord.

Gravatar re: TP / he went into my "dick" category when he immediately called Rivals and snitched on his phone call with RR about taking the UM job. Bring on Feagin - it might end up being more fun to beat Pryor now anyway.

Gravatar Sombrero Dude posts here, right? He got his pic on the front page of the News high-5ing RR:

http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs...1131/ SPORTS0201

Gravatar Brian is so right.....don't give a crap!

Gravatar That Alabama line about Elder's arrest being why "you oversign in the first place" is hilarious. I can actually see Saban and his coaches looking through photos of the recruits going "Rape....felonius assault....misdemeanor theft....oooooh, this one looks like a surefire arsonist. Well, that brings us down to 25. We're all good, gents."

Gravatar L to the A to the M to the E.

Gravatar Mlive football forum mods are fucking idiots

Gravatar If it's any consolation, I give a crap. It's the offseason, and this pertains to CFB as a whole, so I thought it was an interesting thing to tackle. If a buncha Bamer fans wanna get pissed, they are clearly missing the point. More power to em.

Gravatar It is one thing to "oversign" when a coach knows there is a high probability certain players won't be back due to academic, legal, or other troubles.

The problem with yanking scholarships from those that are "underperforming" because the coach oversigns is that he is absolving himself of any responsibility to take care of the kid. Saban and every other coach in the country recruits kids and sells families on the idea their son will be given care and set up for his future.

Are there kids who don't have academic or legal troubles who probably don't belong on a team? Certainly. Absolutely. There are headache kids and lost causes (athletically speaking). The problem in this case is not what is "ok," but what is moral.

Throwing your hands up the way Saban presumably will is a ridiculous cop out. If you want an athlete badly enough to offer him a scholarship and bring him to your school, then you ought to have the stones to stick by him in the name of decency. 18-21 year olds who've done nothing demonstrably wrong shouldn't be jettisoned in the name of a marginally more competitive team or Saban's job becoming easier.

Anyone who says this is ok to do at a kid at this stage of life, so that your team has a better second string kickoff option (after all, we're not talking about the stars in the new or withdrawn scholarships) needs to re-evaluate their priorities.

Oh right, you're Alabamans.

Gravatar I personally found this entertaining.

And I was pretty horrified by the consensus of Alabama bloggers that 18 year old kids better perform or have their free ride to college yanked.

Gravatar Come on - it was a good weekend for Michigan hoops and Michigan hockey. We even have our damn strong baseball team to talk about. And we're still going to talk about a blogger slap-fight/flame-war about Alabama's recruiting class?

Gravatar Ok, we won in hockey/hoops. What else is there to discuss chitown? If there is...ask some discussion questions, start the coversation on hockey/hoops/sball/baseball instead of complaining about it. I insist, get the ball rolling.

Again, it's not Alabama for chrissake. It's the recruiting/scholarship practices, they just happen to be the ones doing it. It pertains to this blog b/c it's a CFB issue, and as much as this is a Michigan everything blog, it's still a CFB blog too.

Gravatar Also, I love that this got the "West Virginia is a den of post-apocalyptic insanity" tag, even though the post, as far as I can tell, has nothing to do with West Virginia at all.

Gravatar West Virginia can go fuck themselves

Gravatar The comparison's to educational scholarships are ludicrous. There is no way you can tell if a kid can perform at the highest levels of CFB until he gets there and a system that doesn't fit him or a coaching change will affect that. If you are smart, you going to be smart wherever you go. Horrible comparison.

That like comparing apples to a wild mongoose.

Gravatar Brian,

I know you said you were done, but I think this point needs to be revisited. Lost in all of the 'bama rhetoric is a very valid point - these schools are hoping for some of their students to fail. Perhaps an article discussing the biggest offenders, Miami, Minnesota, WfVU (yep, under RR) should follow this up. Obviously, there are going to be exceptions (Minny had plenty of spots to fill, Miami expected people to leave because of the regime change, etc), but an overall view might be easier to swallow.

And the academic scholarships argument holds no water. If you have an academic scholarship, you must maintain a certain GPA (at least, that's what I'm told...Lord knows I didn't earn one at Mich). You don't lose that scholarship if someone comes in and gets a better GPA...or someone comes in with the potential for a better GPA.

Gravatar hdtv is better than 20/20 vision

Gravatar Anybody have a good orgasm today !!

Gravatar yeah, when i hooked up my digital cable box to my new hdtv.

Gravatar BeanTown I hear ya

Gravatar 720? 1080? LCD, Plasma, DLP?

Gravatar Sony LCD 720... its a good buy for my small bedroom. down the road i'm gonna get a big ass 1080 for the living room.

Gravatar Frankly, I'm scared at how self-assured even the most "intelligent-sounding" 'bama fans seem. They leave holes in their arguments wide open and blindly ignore them. It's amazing, really.

I'm kind of glad there exist fanbases out there even more self-righteous than ours tends to be.

Gravatar Someone should tell Rodriguez that coaches wearning mock turtlenecks and sport coats to basketball games is not a formula for success.

Gravatar @Corey

It's because Bama is not a school even remotely known for academics.

Gravatar Holy crap! I am dying with laughter.

Does Bama fan not realize Michigan fan doesn't give a flying flip about their program? They think Brian's motivation for going after Saban is pure jealousy.

Memo to Bama fan. Your program has not been relevant for a long time. When it is relevant you get put on probation shortly after. Michigan fan and fans of other schools outside of the SEC don't care about you.

Gravatar Bama fans are just flattering themselves by feigning our jealousy at their program.

Gravatar I care about Saban. He coached little brother a little while ago. Little while... like what, 3, 4 years? 10???? noway. And he was at another school in between? My (and Brian's) fixation with Mr. Valuable Time coach is obvious.

Gravatar Funny, on an earlier thread I was dumb enough to ask something along the line of, "If Pryor's such a media whore, then where's he been lately?" Suddenly, as if on cue, there are several stories about Pryor "Thinking over his options but not really thinking about it cuz of basketball & cars & chicks, etc. etc. etc..." and accosting fans of a rival school.

I was leery of jumping on the "screw TP, I don't even want him anymore" bus, but here I find myself on the side of the highway, thumb in the wind...

Gravatar Perriloux is in serious trouble

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/ne...tory? id=3252133

Some kids just don't learn!!

Also, Carty's BS is creating more noise over at rivals. Seems something along the lines of not showing up to class and getting grades kinda stuff!!

Gravatar Being in law school down here, I know firsthand that Sabanation is crazy, y'all. LOGIC WILL NOT WORK.

Gravatar i also find this topic relevant to today's college football world. plus, it stimulates intelligent debate (well, in this case the 'intelligent' part was one sided) which is what hooked me on this blog to begin with. that said, it is true that everything in this topic that can possibly be said, has been said already.

the thing i don't get is people coming here, reading the whole post, and commenting 'i don't care, why are we talking about this?' 1st, who's 'we?' *you* don't care, so don't read it. move along to the next blog down the hall.

Gravatar I said it previously, I'll say it again: Anybody who finds nothing wrong with yanking a scholarship from a kid who works hard in practice and in the classroom, regardless of the amount of time they spend on the field on Saturday, is a jihadist. A loon. A gutless, ignorant bastard who could only come from...well, Alabama.

And for the many damn fine Alabamian's out there, I'm sorry. I'm just resorting to regional stereotypes because I have nothing better to say right now.

Gravatar Hey Fellas,
Its me- Nick. Gee, I just plum lost count on how many fellas I was signin'. Only got ten fingers and ten toes to figger this out. Ever since that loss to Louisiana Munroe, I gotta do somethin' to get these hicks off my tail.

Gravatar I think its hilarious what Todd writes at RBR in response to Brian. He somehow thinks that Tiller's comments on RichRod are causing us such discomfort that we have to try and shift the spotlight elsewhere. I saw what Tiller had to say in passing and never returned to look at it again. Who cares? It's frickin Purdue. Todd also mentions the title "...Around These Parts" and claims that its the Big 10-Saban connection that causes the unwarranted attention. I would guess that most UM fans don't even recall that Saban coached MSU. Instead, isn't it logical, Alabama fans, that the "#1" recruiting class in the nation, where the coaches are bringing in 28% more players than they are supposed to, would get some attention?

No?

OK, go back to NASCRRRRR

And save the children, RichRod's are both very handsome: http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.d...02180360/& imw=Y

Gravatar Parting Shot :

What do an Alabama fan and a maggot have in common?

They can both live off a dead Bear for 30 years.

Gravatar Jim Carty sucks cock as does his mother

Gravatar Explain the Carty / Rivals stuff...what is up?

Gravatar Who gives a fuck its Carty thats all you need to know

Gravatar I'm not sure how I feel about RR introducing his family, I don't recall the LLoyd ever parading around his family. Hell, I couldn't pick any off the Carrs out of a lineup save for LLoyd.

I think RR wants to create a family atmosphere, the recruits all seemed to talk about RR wanting to meet their families, so I guess it is ok that he is letting his family share the spotlight.

Gravatar Jimmy

RRod is doing his best to become a Michigan man . Remember Bo was a Buckeye

Gravatar Hmmm...maybe Pryor should plan a visit to Baton Rouge after all?

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/ne...tory? id=3252133

Gravatar They really spent that much time talking about what possibly motivated the post? It couldn't just be that Brian is legitimately disconcerted?

And I'm with Dan on the commenters who feel like it's their duty to chime in about how much they don't care about X topic. Brian is the one providing the service for free. We're all freeloading and lucky he cares enough to include us in the discussion.

Gravatar Wait, why is this tagged with the West Virginia label?

Gravatar We're all freeloading and lucky he cares enough to include us in the discussion.

yea, that pretty much sums it up there. when he 1st brought it up last year, i thought i was the only one who noticed this stuff. not only that 30+>25, but having followed to M program, i never saw soooo many guys leave in a single year that could justify 30+ additions in Feb. so, yea, it's interesting to me.

colin... thoughts on the games vs lake St? the officials were great (esp Friday). i guess no one else noticed the ref messing w/ the crowd. good times.

Gravatar @ colin:

He does get advertising revenue as a result of every visitor to the blog, so it's not like he's doing this for nothing in return. Of course, I'm not saying that I don't appreciate his work or that I agree with the people talking about how they don't like this topic. I think that (a) this is relevant to all of college football and (b) it's kind of a waste of board space to complain about his coverage of it (akin to all of the "first" crap).

Gravatar Let's just let sleeping dogs lie.

Gravatar Someone should tell Rodriguez that coaches wearning mock turtlenecks and sport coats to basketball games is not a formula for success.
J. Lichty | 02.18.08 - 6:22 pm |

Priceless.

Gravatar Hello friends,

I think it was said earlier in the discussion, and quite effectively I think: Alabama is just irrelevant either way. Indeed, outside of the SEC why would anyone care about the movements of that school recruiting assorted criminals, misfits and miscreants (of some evident athletic talent, it seems). Perhaps this sketchy and questionable recruiting relates to losses to Lousiana Monroe and Mississippi State in November of last year? We supported our coach to "retire" in to management...

Ultimately, the usual response to Alabama will be provided by the NCAA: loss of scholarships, loss of bowl eligibility, and recruiting limitations. This will be immediately followed by dancing at Auburn, Charles Barkely saying "I told you so" and the usual "meh" response from the rest of college football.Perhaps this time they will get the death penalty.

Brian, it's cool you want to engage these yokels in a debate but realistically they aren't ready to hear what you have to say (common sense or not). The net result of this, on Brian's end is a string of personal attacks, questionable reasoning by the Alabama fanbase and a broader culture of Saban apologists. If this is the "professionalization" of college football then I guess the apocolypse started in Tuscaloosa.

Best wishes all; back to the life of a semi retired poster.

Gravatar http://www.michigansportscenter....rly- starts.html
MSC has some footage of RR talking at halftime if anyone is interested.

Gravatar Did anything come out today re: Kolarik? Also a more crippling injury than that is Lidstrom going down in the 1st period of the Wings game

Gravatar Haven't seen or heard Kolarik in any MSM. Skimmed most of the comments while gone, nothing there either except one person thinking he's out for the season for no particular reason.

Rollbamaroll had their final word today. Much more pointed than Brian's first one on this site.

Gravatar i'm way passed all of this alabama talk for sure.

it'l hurt their recruiting for the next few years.

Gravatar no it won't, but no one really cares about bama anyways. just thought id share that for those who might. im out for a beer. night all

Gravatar re Kolarik- its a hamstring pull/tear/strain...wouldnt say and he is out weeks rather than days according to Red. He said probably 4-5 weeks.

Gravatar So, not ready to hit the snooze button on "excessive scholarships" thingy? Someone mentioned the "GeeMoney" posts on Mlive. He is either a legitimate insider on UM recruiting in FL or a Keiser Soze level con-artist:

http://www.mlive.com/wolverines/ ...ebruary_15.html

Money quote:

"Definitely the scholarship management will be changing drastically in the next couple years. If a guy can't contribute at the Big 10 level, he'll be 'encouraged' to transfer, watch and see."

If he's right, will UM really hold the moral high ground on this issue?

Oh yeah, and TP will announce for darkhorse New Mexico State citing Hal Mumme's system for producing stud NFL QB's.

Gravatar Are 'Bama fans trying to give ND fans a run for their money in the "most delusional fan base" race?

Cause if they are, ND better watch out. These guys are goooood.

Gravatar rivals also says Kolarik could be out 4-5 weeks

Gravatar Having never read RBR before now. I have to ask - did they replace mgoblog with maize & brew as their Michigan blog of choice in the sidebar? Can't take the heat...

Gravatar In other news, we play sparty in hockey on Saturday. Nothing would please me more than an absolute trouncing, with a margin of victory by 3 or 4 goals.

You goin'?

Gravatar No fan base is more delusional than us...

Gravatar okay so i've been wondering for a while... could someone please explain the "fuck lion" to which marques slocum supposedly devotes his time?

Gravatar bama and the entire south are full of ignorant rednecks. period.

Gravatar tim, i've been trying to figure out what in the hell a "fuck lion" is for some time now.

Gravatar i got a fuck lion now come fuck wit me

Gravatar My mom CARLA, dat bitch da shit, i love her i think she da realest bitch alive

Gravatar What size shoe do you wear?

a big enouf size 2 boot chu da fuck up outta here

http://www.everydayshouldbesatur...marques-slocum/

thar be the treasure

Gravatar did you guys see this comment about mallet? from the freep artice:

"First things first. When 'RR' went to WVU the cupboard was very bare just as the 'WVUgrad' said. Nehlen had lost his # 1 recruiter (Doc Holliday) and there was nobody else even close to his recruiting ability. Doc recruited the entire state of FLA for WVU and he signed every player they got out of FLA. (Incidentally, watch very closely as FLA has lost not only Doc but another excellent evaluator/recruiter in Greg Mattison, as well as 2 other assistants, and I predict there'll be a drop-off of their talent level, as they had a very mediocre recruiting class despite what you may read!)

Secondly, regarding Mallett, for the sake of full disclosure, this is a spoiled brat that is terribly headstrong and Lloyd had to put up with a ton of crap from this kid in one year. He left school last spring and went home to his Mommy, and the coach had to go down and fetch him back (great QB leadership skills!) and he was extremely uncoachable, hence the sidearm delivery and numerous knockdowns at the l.o.s. this season.

Thirdly, Mallett was very unpopular with a good many of his teammates, especially the upperclassmen, as he came to town with a holier-than-thou attitude and had many a Senior get in his face, on numerous occasions.

When coach 'RR' first called Ryan (after the coaching change) , he was very surprised at how much Mallett had his 'back up' right from the get-go. This shocked 'RR'. On the follow-up calls, Mallett clearly had the attitude that 'RR' needed to prove himself to him (RM). Upon discussion with several people in the coaching staff as he interviewed them, he got a much clearer picture of who 'RM' truly was.

You folks that have steadfastly stuck up for this insulent kid, don't know the real story. Lloyd clearly pointed out to 'RM' & his parents that there was absolutely no advantage between transferring in Jan or waiting until this spring after school dismissed. He could have gone through spring practice and competed and used it as a chance to learn more about an entirely different style of football. If it was a bad fit, then take your time over the summer and visit a few schools and then transfer.

But this head strong kid (make no mistake, his parents have nothing to say about it .... he's making all of the decisions) wouldn't listen to his coaches (including Loeffler) and he jumped over to Arkansas, and oh by the way .... Petrino signed 2 h.s. QBs that WILL be eligible to compete this summer and WILL be eligible to play this fall, enabling them to establish themselves with the new coaching staff while Mallett sits and watches.

I may be going out on a limb, but knowing what I know about the make-up of a successful QB in college and Pro football, this kid may never be heard from again. He may have painted himself into a corner, because he's headstrong, and believes he's the smartest guy in the room. I would not be shocked if 2 years

Gravatar (continued) in the room. I would not be shocked if 2 years down the road, after he hasn't played all that much, and perhaps still playing with poor QB mechanics, transfers for his final year to a 1AA program so he doesn't have to sit out again, and so he can try to salvage a possible NFL career.

This may seem like bold predictions but after have conversations with a couple of outgoing coaches and a couple of in-coming coaches. It's really not the stretch it seems."

seems to confirm what we've been hearing about him. I'll just say, good luck RM (but good riddance)

Gravatar Where is everybody. Only 67 comments so far. It's like they confirmed today that Pryor isn't coming and now there's no reason to be on this blog.

Gravatar Grandpa Simpson, as long as there is work to be done, there is reason to be on this blog.

Gravatar are you cold and tired granny? it was confirmed on signing day that he wasn't coming here. also confirmed that he's an unethical prick/punk. he'll fit right in at fOSU. (nearly arrested at a B-ball game. ha. I'd rather pick shepard any day of the week and twice on saturday.)

Gravatar I'm just saying I noticed the lack of comments today. I think a lot of people on this blog were holding out hope that Pryor would still come here (UM). That hope was crushed today with Pryor confirming that he was set to pick tOSU on Feb 5th. Those people have now moved on, thus the lack of comments on the blog.

Gravatar I couldn't care less about Alabama oversigning, I just want to kiss Suzy Kolber.

Gravatar http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k...h? v=kSiDa044cNM

This is probably old, but its the first time I saw it. looks like it came from a sorta neutral source. made me laugh, so I thought I'd share.

Gravatar Dear Mr. President, There are too many states nowadays. Please, eliminate three. P.S. I am not a crackpot.

Gravatar I think the relevance of Brian's dissection of Bama is that is provides the context for why the SEC is the best overall conference in college football as most observers believe. It is not too hard to be better if you are allowed to field the best 85 players out of 105 while the Big Ten has to field the best 85 of 85. What about the level playing field argument?

Gravatar Brian--

You have made solid points and fought the good fight. The opposition here is blinded by school loyalty. We are proud of Mgoblog.

Gravatar "Someone should tell Rodriguez that coaches wearning mock turtlenecks and sport coats to basketball games is not a formula for success."

I agree it's not the best look, but if you go back and look at photos from Bo's first year in '69, he's wearing a mock turtleneck a good portion of the time. I prefer that sartorial association to the one with TA.

Gravatar Hey Boleach-It's not themselves it's their brothers, sisters and cousins.

Brian-As I've said before intelligence, reason and logic are not capabilities of any RammerJammerBammer nitwit.

Gravatar @ BlueSeoul

I disagree with at least one point. You can't point to the sidearm delivery and knocked down passes and say he was uncoachable.

The kid was a true freshman. Henne and Navarre (statistically, the best two passers in Michigan history) both had the same problems at times, even through the end of their careers.

I don't think you could say that Henne and, to a lesser extent, Navarre were uncoachable.

Gravatar This just in from SEC News.com "five scholarships made available by the PD's in Tuscalooser, Knoxville and Baton Rouge.

Gravatar Here's a link to "TP almost arrested following state quarterfinal game" story:

http://www.observer-reporter.com...08-kovak- column

Yeah, we don't want this kid - too firey...

Gravatar Can I go back to not caring about the SEC and the south in general? Sweet.

Gravatar Not to stir up more trouble, but I still can't believe that someone with a college degree, even from an SEC school, could continually fail to grasp the difference between oversigning when you have unfilled scholarships (as Minnesota did this year to approach the 85 cap) and oversigning to the point of excess then simply cutting players. While I do understand that some of us have differing opinions of the morality of cutting a player to whom a scholarship has been promised, I just can't figure out how the former misinterpretation of the facts comes about. Is it willful cognitive dissonance or genuine failure to comprehend? Does being irrelevant both nationally and within your own conference drive one to such a state of mental disorder?

Either way, this will be resolved by the start of the season. Hopefully no one will be done wrong to the extent that they cannot complete a 4 year degree (as dubious as the value of said degree might be). Moreover, intelligent college football fans have long since acknowledged that recruiting rankings are bunk anyway, so this supposed number one class will eventually wilt down to more pedestrian proportions, leaving Alabama with a mediocre at best group of players.

Although I'm an Ohio State fan, I often turn to MGOBLOG for intelligent commentary. Brian, you did well to point out the problem with this situation and handled it well. I hope you can continue to withstand the slings and arrows of lesser bloggers and keep speaking the truth.

Gravatar I'm not saying what Pryor did was right...

...but dealing with a handful of opposing high school fans is much different than dealing with a stadium full of opponents' fans.

I've been in high school gymnasiums/stadiums where the ignorance gets out of hand. Kids are assholes for no reason and get really personal, and when you're in a small group of people, you get angrier because you think it's more personal.

When you're in front of 100,000 people, even when most of them are hostile, I think it's easier to ignore. You can just block it out or think to yourself, "That's how opposing fans are."

Besides that, everybody needs to learn the lesson at some point that you can't go into the stands or take on every heckler. Maybe he'll learn his lesson and get on with his life.

I don't think a high schooler's overreaction should color the rest of his accomplishments or his future. We've ALL probably done something dumber than talk shit to a hostile crowd. I know I have.

Gravatar I don't know if this has been addressed, but equating an underperforming athlete to an underperforming student on an academic scholarship is ridiculous.

Athletic underperformance can be attributed to many things. If I'm trying my best, working hard in the classroom, coming to practice, etc., but I'm just not earning playing time (due to a lack of talent, a 5-star stud ahead of me, whatever), my scholarship shouldn't be taken away.

If I'm on an academic scholarship but I'm not getting good grades, the reasons need to be looked at. If I'm not studying or not doing my work, hell yes, my academic scholarship should be taken. But most academic scholarships have a probation period where you're warned that you need to step up your efforts. If you're still doing poorly after that, then they yank your scholarship.

They're not the same thing.

Gravatar There is a reason I stick with Maize-n-Brew and avoid this shit. What a bunch of idiots...

Gravatar magnus, you're right... you've pointed out the holes in bama's arguments. they are gaping and mostly ignored. the sad part about this thing is realizing a) how ignorantly diluted the bama fanbase is and b) that the bama bloggers aren't that much better.

Gravatar "they are gaping and mostly ignored."

That could describe many things, including Jim Rome's mouth and Hillary Clinton's vajayjay.

Gravatar dare i say, anon == intellectually lazy?

can't be b/c he doesn't care..... if that's true, why read the post, any comments or bother to write a comment?

Gravatar @magnus, not my opinion. just relating the comment from 'geemoney' sorry, should have linked to it so you could see the whole discussion.

http://www.mlive.com/wolverines/ ...ebruary_15.html

Gravatar What did people do in court all day before blackberries? I've been sitting in court since before 9 this morning, and I would've ended my life my now if I didn't have access to news, email, blogs, and messageboards the whole time

Gravatar from the ES... i found this a bit interesting:

The "big catches" for MSU in its recruiting class were Steve Gardiner out of Ohio, who would've been admitted without an athletic-based scholarship, sporting a 3.5 GPA an 23 ACT with his 180 tackles.

now, i'm not one to flout standardized test scores (i've never been great at them).... but a 23 == welcome to MSU? didn't know that.

Gravatar Maybe they're referring to the 3.5 GPA.

Gravatar re TP:
his life is under a microscope right now. he should know better than to react as he did.

Gravatar re: TP

Shrug.

Gravatar Pryor SHOULD know better, but still...he's 17 (or 18?).

Just because you're famous doesn't mean you're smarter/more experienced.

Gravatar @ DanK

If I'm not mistaken, most schools lower their standards a little bit for athletes. There's a certain qualifying score (16 or something like that), but after that, it's kind of a free-for-all.

I'd be willing to bet that at least a few Michigan players scored lower than a 23 on the ACT.

Gravatar You'd almost think people had forgotten we were talking about kids, Brian. A nineteen year-old can't catch the ball as well as advertised? Throw him overboard. People need a wake-up call. College football is the most important thing on earth, yes, granted. But still. . . these are kids, who need more than anything else a good education.

Gravatar would have been admitted w/o a s'ship, magnus.

that's the point i'm interested in. i know half the team at any program will have ACTs lower than 22.

since my HS worked on a %age, i'm not sure how HS GPA is calculated... i have to assume the same way as college so that an A- is a 3.7.

Gravatar @ DanK

Sorry, I didn't read the whole quote. Yeah, 23 is a little low. Not horrible, though, if you have other things (GPA, community service, etc.) going for you.

Gravatar @ DanK

Your assumption would be correct. A few schools use a 5-point scale and some schools have a 5-point scale for AP classes, but for the most part, it's the same as college.

Gravatar the average act score is around 19...so a 23 is actually not bad. im not sure if you guys understand the percentile rankings of act scores. here's a very basic chart for some guidance:

Score Perecentile Rank
31 99%
26 90%
23 76%
20 54%
17 28%

Gravatar i did not just make those up either. the source was sparknotes. so i think scoring roughly in the 75th perecentile of all students is pretty good and not at all "low." i know several u of m grads that scored a 23 on their act. so, yeah...its a solid, but not spectactular score, and i think a non-issue in terms fo discussion.

Gravatar actually, those %iles are interesting... not the pattern i assumed. i guess i fugured 21-22 was avg/50%ile. i had no idea.

well, having completely igored these tests since i was 8 will do that....

Gravatar 23, really BGH? i thought i was about as low as it gets wrt ACT scores..

Gravatar ACT average is a 19? really? what's the the highest score possible--36?

Gravatar well, i think part of the confusion comes from the fact that the act is used much less than the sat (in terms of people takign the test) so their is a lesser degree of familiarity. a 23 isnt too bad, its actually what i scored the first time i took the test.

i hate standardized tests. i recently took the gre and got a perfect score on the writing (6.0) and a freaking 530 on the math section.

Gravatar ohio kids usually do much better on the ACT than the SAT because of the standardized tests they have in grade school are created by the same testing company

Gravatar hcs:

yeah, its a 36. i think its designed to be nearly, if not almost toally, impossible to achieve. as you can see, a 31 is roughly the 91st percentile. i was reading that most ivy's start looking at kids who score 27 and up. not too sure abotu the validity of that, though.

Gravatar yea, most people out east (guilty) don't take the ACT. i was in the minority b/c UM required ACT, and suggested SAT.

Gravatar UM requires ACT? I graduated High School in 1996, and went to Michigan without taking the ACT.

Gravatar i didn't know anyone who scored higher than 31... and those guys were smart. not sure why they took it tho, as they applied to eastern schools.

Gravatar i think the sat is designed so that high scores are somewhat realistic. but these tests are more of an indication of school systems than anyhting else. no matter how smart you are, if you havent been taught the sciences throughouly, uyou wont score high. the same with the math sections. i'd think reading comprehension would be the only spot that would show natural ability.

Gravatar BGH:
ivy's don't like the ACT. they will consider it only secondary to the SAT, and usually only give it weight if there is a big difference in the testing scores. at least that's how it went when i was applying to college (2001). ACT saved my butt, basically.

Gravatar maybe i'm misremembering chitown....

Gravatar I don't know about the new scale, but when the SAT was based on 1600, the 50th percentile was a little higher than 800. Also, I knew several people that either hit, or got within 20-40 points of 1600, so I think that it was actually feasible to hit those scores (you could get some questions wrong and still get 1600).

Gravatar hcs: point i was trying to make is that a 28/29/20 is somewhat akin to getting a 750+ on the set portions.

and does anyone really care about what the ivys want? such a facade. they want the sons and daughters of the elite. and method man and redman.

Gravatar Random question...

Someone posted a link about the suspension of the LSU QB. Their backup is a transfer from Harvard? Why the hell would you leave a degree from Harvard for one from LSU? The only positive I could see is being surrounded by hotter chicks... Any thoughts?

Gravatar I'm glad this whole episode between Brian and Tide Nation is over, and I think Brian acquitted himself (and by extension, Michigan and the Big Ten) very well. Kudos to Brian for making his point and sticking to his guns.

However, this drama really exposed some fundamental differences between the North and South* in the administration of college football. I used to think that the biggest differences between Northern and Southern football was lower academic standards, greater influence of slimy boosters with loads of cash, more aggressive and innovative play-calling on the field and the so-called emphasis on speed at "non-skill" positions (partly borne out of high school spring football in the South). But it's evident now that there are other factors, some deeply hidden and controversial, that give Southern football a distinct advantage in competing in today's college football landscape. Prior to the last week, I had an inkling about oversigning but didn't know how pervasive it really is.

Brian, during this college football offseason, it might be good to explore some of the other hidden factors that might give Southern football an advantage over others in the NCAA. What other things are being done by schools that administer football this way?

* This is not an indictment of Alabama in particular or even of the SEC; it's an indictment of the schools that choose to play in this manner. I'd argue that USC plays by the Southern school rules, and it's obviously not in the South.

Gravatar BGH: i get what you are saying. i went to a prep school outside of boston, i know what the ivys want and that's exactly why i didn't apply to any. i saw who of my peers were applying to certain schools and knew i didn't want to spend four more years with those types.

i had a friend in HS who thought he missed one math problem on the SAT, so he cancelled his score because he only wanted to get a 1600 (which he eventually got).

Gravatar 10thYR - I can honestly say that since interviewing for my very first job, the college from which I graduated has not been a topic of conversation. If the kid feels like he wants better tail, that's a valid exchange.

_____

one of my friends from high school got a 29, he got a full ride to LSU, 3 generations of his family went there, thats why he chose them but he had scholarship offers from everywhere

Gravatar i got a 31 on the ACT back in 97. In math I only got one question wrong and it dropped the score for that section from 36 (perfect) down to 34, so it is very hard to get the highest score.

Gravatar I know a couple people who got 34's.

They're, like, doctors and shit, though.

Gravatar A line at fourth year juniors is not "arbitrary." College degrees are designed to be acquired in four years. There is a major difference between cutting a kid who is about to get his degree and forcing a kid who is in the middle of his college career off of scholarship and possibly to another school."

This is written by a loyal Michigan defender, isn't it. How droll...let me complete the thought..."as there is a major difference between allowing a student to pursue a meaningless Continuing Studies degree and then to never, actually graduate."

Gravatar highest I have ever heard from my friends was a 34 on the ACT. Now she's at Purdue for biomedical engineering.

Gravatar This comment was just posted regarding that interview:

Wow are you guys ignorant and wearing a HUGE set of blinders. First off the writer of this column completely ignored Brian Cook's answers and just went on with his own ideas. You asked why he went after Alabama instead of Miami....he answered by stating that he was more upset by Alabama going over 85 players on the roster which he had no verification of Miami doing...you then put in an editor's note stating that Miami signed more players this year than Alabama, thus completely avoiding the point that Brian Cook had made. This interview was embarrassing and I feel sorrow for Brian Cook for he is surely dumber for taking part in it.

Sincerely an Ohio State fan who would have loved nothing more than to have seen a Michigan blogger look stupid, but unfortunately you made him look like a genius in comparison to you.

Gravatar The Elder armed robbery is ridiculous. Click on my name for link but the gist is he held up two students with a handgun for $26. 10 year minimum sentence in Alabama.

Brian is possibly wrong on one point:

"not even I think Nick Saban plans for six kids to commit armed robbery by fall."

Elder is the seventh Crimson Tider arrested since Saban's arrival. It probably isn't more than a sigma or two in fact, to expect half a dozen kids to be thrown off the team for felony arrests by August. That would only be double their average.
