I live near the AA airport and this jet would be one of the largest planes that would have taken off or landed there. (not that it couldn't use AA, but it would have been an outlier.)

You already said you didn't want Ferentz, but now that it may happen, and Lloyd seems to be a big facilitator, are you still against it. Magnus, I just want to thank you for being on here. I know that every time something goes horribly wrong with Michigan football I can blame you or vent in your apologist direction for having the limited-mediocre-old milwaukee lite mentality that keeps this program down. Facts about the plane:
It is a charter jet, it is not owned by an individual but rather by a charter company
- unless it is for national secuirity purposes all flights must be allowed to be tracked (read the FAA guidebooks) and something tells me a michigan coaching search is not a national secuirty emergency
- a town car left ann arbor today headed for the airport with Mary Sue Coleman, Bill Martin and one other person in it
- all three were on the plane, which picked up one more, but had a 27 minute delay in Iowa due to needing to defreeze the wings

I still can't understand how a coach who has a losing record against his archrival and hasn't won a truly big game since the 2000 Orange Bowl can take a program hostage like this. WTF is wrong with our University that this is allowed to happen? Don't the people who matter (the big money donors) care about this at all? I'm completely befuddled.

From PensySpartan on the Red Cedar Board..
FWIW, this plane is owned by USA Jet Airlines, Inc, a charter service technically based in Belleville, MI. The charter service is owned by Brian Hermelin, UM graduate and son of David Hermelin, UM alumnus, former ambassador to Norway, and for whom the "David B. Hermelin Volunteer Fundraising Award" at the UM was named...

"BRIAN M. HERMELIN is currently Chief Operating Officer and a director of USA Jet Airlines Inc., a cargo airline that also operates Active Aero Charter, an air charter broker and logistics provider. ... Mr. Hermelin is a graduate of the University of Michigan and has received a Masters in Business Administration from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania."
But, I would assume that there would be a good number of companies located around Ann Arbor that would have owners with U of M ties. Possibly a coincidence?

When Ferentz is hired...
We won't have to worry about being ranked high in the preseason.
We won't be a national joke when we start #5 and end at #34.
We won't have our hopes and dreams of a NC crushed every year because a New Year's day bowl will be the goal.
We won't be mad when we lose to o$u, just expect it.
We will have a pretty stadium?
We will have more white guys.
We will recruit more thugs from Detroit.
We will give scholly's to coaches kids who shouldn't be played at GVSU.
We will lose to Sparty, and Dantonio will get his revenge.

Can you comment on why you think KF is a clown? That doesn't make sense to me. He seems like a very good coach. With better players, he may seem a lot more Tressel-like than people are giving him credit for.

Our dreams were dashed the moment Ferentz boarded the plane. It's a matter of dotting the i's and crossing the t's at this point. I just hope they don't hike tuition to pay for his "services".
At least our coach can still beat Notre Dame's coach in a game of sprint.

OK. Perspective please. Consider the following propositions:
1. For all of his faults, Lloyd Carr may know a thing or two about who can coach at Michigan.
2. Ferentz is the best-prepared of all the candidates I have heard mentioned to coach at Michigan. He knows the Big 10, he has experience coaching a major program, and he is ethically beyond reproach. There is so much more than X's and O's involved; I think Martin is looking at character.
3. The last two years have been mediocre for Iowa, but Ferentz has remained on the hotlist whenever an NFL position opens up.
4. I've said this before--this search is not about rebuilding, but maintaining excellence. Had Michigan had consecutive losing seasons, I would say break the mold and overhaul the program. But that is not what has happened.
5. Yes, choosing Ferentz is risk-averse. But this is a conservative program, folks. And always has been.

Well, I certainly appreciate the sentiment. Whoever it is, though, you have to admit the last four years have been pretty bad under Lloyd (and I am not a Lloyd basher). It would take a pretty monumentally bad choice (e.g., Weis, Callahan) to do worse than we have lately.

Guys,
I think we are all really getting to worked up about this. All indications are that the search is just starting. Martin keeps going on record as saying so. He can't make a quick hire and save face. Ferentz could still end up being the guy, but with his salary, I can't buy U-M pulling it off. They would probably need booster help (like they did with Beilein) and I can't see the boosters buying off on this.
BTW, what an appropriate quote...is this just a coincidence?
"Martin declined to comment on the search, but told the assembled fans at the bust: “I haven’t had any flights on jets, I haven’t left Ann Arbor,” but that he’s hard at work trying to find Lloyd Carr’s replacement."

I see the future.
We'll announce the hiring.
Then, later, the coordinators will say they're staying.
Then they'll make our stadium smaller, to the point we're not the biggest anymore.
Then McGuffie will decommitt.
Add a dash of Tressel insecurity and the possibility of an upcoming Dantonio-led program and this makes me want to throw up.

Maybe I missed something, but based on Brian's post today earlier, it could very well be that they have just been interviewing him.
Let's keep track of this plane though, hopefully it goes to Idaho, Cincinnati, and Baton Rouge in the next few weeks.
For the record, I am not of the "end of the world" mode if Ferentz is hired---under a few conditions:
(1) No Debord.
(2) No Ken O'Keefe (i.e. no Debord Sr.)
(3) We at least legitimately consider Kelly, Peterson, and Miles.
That said, Ferentz is AT BEST my 4th choice. AT BEST.
Please let my somewhat blind faith in Martin be well-founded.

Dammit, Dammit...son of a bitch!
No, seriously, people this cannot be possible; such a questionable hiring decision. I like Brian a lot as the mgoblogger but I am struggling mightily with the veracity of UM potentially making such a debatable hire. Looks like an interview, maximally, to me...perhaps the courtesy model in order to assuage the influence of our departing friend (Head Coach of the 97 MNC, you may recall) Lloyd Carr. Friends, I give you my rationale:
Factors Supporting UM hiring Ferentz:
- supposed name candidate
- experienced coaching Big 10 football (meaning here unimaginative scheming, generally)
- past connections to Belichick (as a Browns fan don't even remind me of that era)
- former "hot" NFL candidate (see: Petrino, Bobby for how that works out)
- apparently is rather popular with MSC
Factors Opposing UM hiring Ferentz:
- alumni donation (don't you be looking for more money from me...MSC...)
- boosters (see above but x10 and make these guys more obsessive x50 since they live and die the football but never actually went to the place or sat in the student section; these are the guys in my section swearing all the time that my kid complains about)
- new stadium mods and luxury boxes (see both parts immediately above) and can anyone reasonably forsee a hiring of Kirk Ferentz as saleable? Even the UM admin. has to be smarter than that...hell, Sparty is smarter than that...
So that's it friends, a bunch of so so points for hiring versus money collection. We all know the UM is "about the monies"...
I'm going to sleep on that and hope this Ferentz talk is all a bad dream.
Best wishes all,

Meeechigan Dan,
If this was 1993 and you were one of my pals from UofM and we were walking back from Monday Night $1 pitchers at Rick's and you said something like that, there would have been a lot of fighting going on. Not completely mean spirited you need to die fighting, but the I can't believe you utter something so terrible, I need to beat those thoughts out of your head fighting. Which would have been followed by more drinking.
Then I would wake on Tuesday morning and realize you were right, call to apologize, then the combination of the hangover and the bad news would have me praying to the porcelain god.

The freep.com just reported that English interviewed today, and DeBord is interviewing tomorrow.
Why would Michigan bring Ferentz on Tuesday (or even Wednesday), if they are interviewing DeBord on Tuesday?
No one is getting the HC job in the immediate future. Ferentz aint on that plane. He isnt getting the job any time soon. Brian (the kid who is writes this website) is making a fool of himself, and so is anyone who believes his stuff.

Pay attention people:
Kirk actually held a team meeting today (relax folks, this one has been on the books for a while) and spoke with the team. At no point did he address Michigan and any rumors. He simply said that they need to get back to work and they plan on having practices this Friday and Saturday.
Since the team is bowl eligible, they are allowed to practice until they are officially out of bowl consideration.

Look, whoever it is will have to beat OSU or he's gone. And and when we beat OSU then we'll be good enough for BCS bowls and more. Even MSC won't be able to stand the pressure if our new coach goes 8-4 regularly with no OSU wins. Carr was an insitution, new coach (even if it's Capt. Kirk) won't get the leeway Carr did.

Don't expect the "boosters" to come to our rescue. What makes people think that boosters are as well read about the negatives about certain coaches as we are in the blogosphere or as negative about Ferentz as we are here?
The majority of boosters probably remember when Ferentz was the it girl and haven't thought about his since.
Unfortunately, I know several big dollar boosters who are not exactly on the cutting edge of the information age, and probably have never heard of Jeff Tedford. still get their information from the Athletic Department, the Det News and Free Press.
These boosters don't know that Zoltan is a Space Emperor, they do not know Carl Monday is, and they certainly don't know Tacopants.
I attended games with many of these guys over the years and rarely heard a negative word about Carr until this year. In short they are about three years behind the times at best, making Ferentz still shiney.

Bend It, an average of 9-3 (Carr's record over 13 years, roughly) is excellent by any standard. In the facemask era, only Bo's run in the 1970's tops it.
It is possible that Kelly or Miles would have a better upside.(The guy from Boise State is too green... he beat OU with Hawkins' recruits, and his only exposure to a major program was at Oregon, 1995-2000) (Rodriguez is a WV native, played at WVU--he is not going anywhere). Then again, these other two are riskier choices. Miles is passionate, but everytime I have watched LSU he has done something utterly mystifying. Having never been in a major program, Kelly is an unknown quantity. (Recall that Tressel was an assistant at Syracuse, tOSU before being hired.)
But the point is that there is no perfect choice, and Ferentz is far from the worst-case scenario (DeBoard, English are clearly worse). I would like to see Miles get a shot, but I can understand why Ferentz would get the job.

Chill, guys. Bill & Co. know what they're doing. No way Martin is going to jeopardize the very black ink of the athletic dept. ledger by screwing up the cash cow that is Michigan football.

Meechigan Man,
I would argue that Miles is the safest choice. Our biggest problem is that Lloyd failed to hire the best and brightest and was not the tireless recruiter a Zook or Wies is. If Lloyd would have canned the DeBord experiment and Git a couple of years ago, we would be in a different set of circumstances now.
Regardless of his play calling, Miles would hire the best coaches, and from all indications he can flat out recruit. You combine that with his history with Michigan and his passion for the program, there is very little downside. Kelly may have more upside, but is a riskier bet. A coach on the down stroke of his career is a big risk.
The only true risk with Miles is that he is older than I would like at 52. He probably only has 10-15 years left in him.

You guys are nuts....are we going to melt down every day we interview someone?
We will be as good with Ferentz as we will be with Miles....let this process play out.....and if you want to get rid of your tickets, I will send you my email.
Relax. Miles or Ferentz, we will never change.....we will still have odd bugaboos happen to us in the ND game.....we will still drop a bizarre game in the Big 10 season.....we will still struggle in our first road game of the season..we will still throw a lot of rock....we will still play for the Big 10 title in the OSU game.
And therein lies the rub......how do we turn around that rivalry....with Miles we get a passionate dude, who while at Okie St beat his main rival 2 of 4 times, but did not do much else; well there was that Texas game in 2004 where he lost a 35-14 halftime lead by giving up 42 unanswered 2nd half points; and at LSU, in 2006, in inarguably his team's most important game, scored 3 whole points with the #1 pick in the NFL draft as his QB; and lost a game this year because he threw rock four straight times with the game on the line.
While in Ferentz, we get a guy who many thought was the next great coach, but he clearly lost something off his fastball in recent seasons; built a rep for being the great builder of O and D line, but saw his O-line play diminish the last few seasons; he has this curious habit of losing to his in state rival as a heavy favorite; but who otherwise has the best ATS record as a favorite of any coach since 2001; runs a stodgy pro style offense that relies on execution; and if at UM will be coaching the most talent he has ever had, but a long shot.
I'm not super stoked about either. But, I do know that with either one we will be in capable hands....provided we get a new S/C coach and program.....and, of course, bring in an imaganitive offensive coordinator.

He and the camera man were there b/c he read this site. Anyway, no Ferentz on that plane--just a crew swap because they were over hours. Then I will sedate KF, tie a set of intricate ropes to his arms and head and hold a press conference where I confess my love for Buckeyes and say that MSC gave me a rimmer. From there all it takes is showing Miles the pics of him humping a gas station tranny in Pensacola and the coaching search is over.
The good news? I'm only 40 mins from Baton Rouge right now anyways.

jamie mac,
your choice of periods to review records is very useful to your arguement. There are two issues. KF has been a failure the last three years and I'm not exactly jumping up and down with joy over our 2005 and 2007 seasons which you use in your comparison.

jamie, serious question in the midst of the Magino jokes and brass balls comments: Is it not logical to conclude that Ferentz is not a good recruiter?
Leveraging those three good years of his career, he turned in some of the worst recruiting performances ever seen at Iowa. And Iowa is no tougher to recruit to than...well, look at the top 25. In bold are places just as hard or harder to recruit to than Iowa:
1. Missouri 11-1
2. West Virginia 10-1
3. Ohio State 11-1
4. Georgia 10-2
5. Kansas 11-1
6. Virginia Tech 10-2
7. LSU 10-2
8. USC 9-2
9. Oklahoma 10-2
10. Florida 9-3
11. Boston College 10-2
12. Hawaii 11-0
13. Arizona State 9-2
14. Tennessee 9-3
15. Illinois 9-3
16. Clemson 9-3
17. Oregon 8-3
18. Wisconsin 9-3
19. BYU 9-2
20. Texas 9-3
21. South Florida 9-3
22. Virginia 9-3
23. Cincinnati 9-3
24. Auburn 8-4
25. Boise State 10-2
It is very, very likely that his recruiting will be worse than Lloyd Carr's, who was an excellent recruiter. Put another way, it is unlikely he will even maintain the current recruiting success.
That and his utterly inconceivably excruciatingly horrid offense gameplanning makes him NUCLEAR WASTE.

Yeah, Miles is a shitty coach...
In his first season as coach LSU won the 2005 SEC Western Division title with a 10-1 regular season record -- including wins over #15 Arizona State (9/10/05), #11 Florida (10/15/05), #16 Auburn (10/22/05) and #4 Alabama (11/12/05). LSU's only regular season loss was an upset at home to #10 Tennessee (9/26/05). In the Tennessee game, after building a 21-0 lead at halftime, the Tigers failed to score another touchdown and lost to UT 30-27 in overtime. In the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta, Georgia, the #3-ranked LSU Tigers, though favored, lost to #13 Georgia 34-14. LSU recovered to win the 2005 Peach Bowl with a 40-3 romp of the #9-ranked Miami Hurricanes. Miles finished his first season at LSU with an 11-2 record, a #6 ranking in the USA Today Coaches Poll, and a #5 ranking in the AP Poll.
In 2006, LSU finished the regular season with ten wins (10-2), and ended the season with six straight wins. 2006 marked the first time in LSU history that the Tigers finished with back-to-back 10-win seasons. Miles was able to do this in spite of his team playing its four toughest games on the road. All four games were against teams ranked in the top eight when the game took place, with three of the teams in the top five (Auburn, Florida, Arkansas). LSU split those four games, losing to Auburn and Florida, but beating Tennessee and Arkansas. LSU did not win the SEC West title, finishing one game behind Arkansas. However, the Tigers were ranked ahead of Arkansas at the end of the regular season, and were rewarded with an invitation to face Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl where they defeated the Irish 41-14. LSU finished the 2006 season ranked #3 overall in both the AP and ESPN polls.
In 2007, Miles gained national attention due to numerous unconventional play calls during nationally televised games. LSU won the 2007 SEC Western Division title and was ranked #1 twice during the regular season. LSU lost its final regular season game at home to unranked Arkansas 50-48 in triple-overtime and lost its #1 ranking.

Because he only loses twice a year and the teams that beat him are a hell of a lot better than App State 2007, Purdue 1996 2000, Northwestern 1995 1996 2000, UCLA, Oregon 2003, Washington 2001, ND 2005, Minn 2005, Wisco 2005 2007. All of the afforementioned teams were far worse than the opposing Michigan team.

Jason,
I am not trying to prove a point. Just hope to quell the suicide watch y'all are on because of a possible plane ride. In 2005, Iowa and UM had the same record.....KF achieving equality with UM with far lesser talent.
I have said the last two years have slowed my and a lot of other's roll on how good KF is.....yet, i still think he is an upgrade from our current coaching staff.....more so w/ new S/C conditioning program.
I dont understand the all out love fest for Les while hating all other candidates that some people have.
People have said no Kelley beccause MSU passed on him; people have said no to R Rod because they dont like his personality; people have said no to tedford because of how this season has gone; people have said ; people have said no to Spurrier (who LSU will hire if we take Les) because he is not our style; and i could go on and on and on.
Every sunday I think about all the good coaches i watched the day before and wonder how all of them would do at UM.....i just want a true search.....hiring Ferentz this week, this fast would tick me off to, so we are in agreement....but, in the end, there are plenty of positives to it if done the right way (did I say new S/C, alreayd), and i will be stoked for 2008 and Utah.

jamie mac,
I'd get jacked up for Kelly.
RRod would be fine on the field, but given his williness to bring in guys like Pacman Jones and Noel Devine (spl?), he scares me from an Alabama-probation stand point.
Tedford would be great for Xs and Os, and if I can get comfortable that his team won't quit on him, I'm fine there too.
In all honesty, I think that the football team would enjoy the most success if we could pry Stoops or Meyer out of their current situations. Unlikely, but both get the job done every year. (With Meyer, I'd hate to see Mallett runthe ball very often though.)
Just get me a guy who can recruit and hire great coordinators (and an S/C)and let the chips fall where they may.

WI = Madison is a great town - WAY better than Iowa, close to Chicago.
BYU = big draw for Mormons. All of their 26-year-olds clean up out there.
BC = Boston, and a cool school overall - plus there are VERY FEW cool places to play on the east coast, and I'm not counting Rutgers, ever.
USF = lets in guys who didn't get into FSU, UF, Miami + warm weather. Does it have to be a college for those guys?
Cincinnati = 10 years behind everywhere else in the world, but some people like that, and its probably still a few ahead of IA.

I am formerly "Brian Kelly has less miles." Yes, the play on this got worn out quickly but in my defense I was out there early in the season.
Unfortunately this thread and the past couple of days worth of KF rumors have been pretty bush league. I'd expect a little more from my heroes Brian, Bend It and Meeechigan Dan. However, the roasting of Magnus the Mediocre One is ALWAYS, ALWAYS appreciated. I will blame him and his Lloyd-loving followers for any hire that is not Brian Kelly, Steve Spurrier, Urban Meyer, Chris Peterson, Les Miles, Rich Rodriguez, Greg Schiano, or Chuck Martin (in that order). Any one of these guys gives us some hope for a better day.
We're not going to hire Kirk Ferentz. The backlash would be too great. Besides, when was the last time a respectable guy coached two teams in the same conference? Or made a direct jump from one conference team to another? It does not happen. Trust me, I've been right all season long, about everything. :) And I also love Drew Sharp - best writer in America. (BTW, Dennis Erickson is not respectable either.)

AAB,
Michigan gets talent (assuming the annual recruiting class rankings are remotely accurate -- a big assumption I'll admit) and this is with a coach who has lost his will to fight. Lloyd knew 12 months ago he didn't have it in him any longer. That was the basis for all of the stories about him deciding to come back for one more go at the urging of Bo and Martin.
Recruiting must be the ultimate grind. Dealing with 18 year olds who think they're the second coming is something I couldn't fathom. Guys like Zook, Wies and Miles have demonstrated a willing ness to go through the effort and countless failures to bring in top 5 classes. (I am not putting out a vote for Zook and Wies, but the guys can recruit, generally at the expense of Iowa and KF.)
Look at Michigan's recruiting class from last year. We land the #2 QB prospect, but end up around #10. A highly ranked QB generally puts the class in the top 5. It tells you a lot about the rest of the class other than Warren.
We are falling well behind OSU when it comes to recruiting and developing players. We can't take a coach who is weak in either of those areas. KF is very weak in one - recruiting.

Look at what Miles has to work with. In 2008, Louisiana has 10 4 stars, which is actually a bad year for them. In 2007, 2 5 stars and 14 4 stars. In 2006, 1 5 star and 10 4 stars. In 2005, Louisiana had Perrilloux, Nic Harris, Beckwith, and Al jones. In 2004, it had Doucet, Dorsey, Ryan Miller, Favorite, Steltz, Tyson Jackson and Jacob Hester. Almost all of the top ranked kids in Louisiana stay in state. It's hard not to be an awesome recruiter at LSU. People talk about Michigan recruiting itself, but that doesn't even begin to approach what a school like LSU does, simply because of geography.

@Astroturf
I never said Lloyd Carr was a poor recruiter. I think he's a great recruiter, specifically because I don't think Michigan recruits itself. The paucity of instate talent means that Carr had to to go places like California, Texas, Ohio and Pennsylvania every single year to get the talent to compete with the best of the country. I think he's one of the better recruiters in the business.
My point is that I'm not sold on Miles' recruiting, specifically because he's in such a talent-rich environment to begin with that recruiting really does sell itself. And because recruiting at Michigan is difficult, I think it's a huge requirement for the job.
I'm not sold on Ferentz by the way. I'm just strongly anti-Les Miles.

Brian Kelly is not a thug said:
Besides, when was the last time a respectable guy coached two teams in the same conference? Or made a direct jump from one conference team to another? It does not happen.
For the record, Tom O'Brien just switched from Boston College to NC State, teams both belonging to the ACC. Whether O'Brien is a "respectable" guy or whether it was a good idea is up to others. For the record, I think it was a stupid move by O'Brien and NC State, and I don't think it's going to work out for either one of them.

MDan: According to Rivals, Iowa's last three recruiting classes were #11, #40 and #27.....they redshirt a ton at Iowa, so much of that #11 class will be juniors next year......it ought to be a make it or break it year as far KF getting Iowa back in that groove he once had them in....remember Alvarez had great early success, dipped, and came back to the head of the league again where he remained a contender until he quit.
As for the teams you had in bold: Mizz, KU, Hawaii, ASU, USF and Cincy are, to this point, one-year wonders....can they maintain....Mizz and KU are having magical, once in generation-type seasons for their schools.....BC is having a tad more success than usual and have a great QB.....Boise and BYU rack up wins and dominate lesser leagues, thats why they are even close to being ranked.
As for WVA, um, i say bring R Rod up here.....dreaming of a White, Slaton, Swet, Devine type of backfield leaves me, well, lets not go there :)
Most of those teams have QB's I would have dumped Henne for in a second....dont discount that.....are we going to change and get dual threat QBs.....maybe, maybe not....but i want a new coach who is beyond open to that.
Although, I would not mind if UM interviewed the coaches in all those teams you had in bold and even the ones not in bold.
Chew on this vis a vis Ferentz and the above Alvarez comparison.....lets say UM decided after 1996, in a radical move by their standards, says to Lloyd we need a new direction even after upsetting OSU for the 2nd straight year.....they get Alaverez who had dippped after getting to the RB in 1994....how would UM been over the next decade....i kinda think its comparable to going after KF right now.....Alvarez at UM would have exceeded by far what he did at Wisco and I think KF would do the same.
Look, I mostly agree with you on Miles, except I dont think for a second our offense is going to be radically different with either Les or KF.....we'd go for it a lot on fourth down, that much is true...if we want a new offensive direction, we go w/ Tedford, Kelley or R Rod...KF would have a lot more talent at his disposal, while Les would have, well, less, but not much less.....sounds like either one would totally improve our S/C and that I like......plus when I close my eyes and listen to Les, he sounds like BO, and I get all weepy.
Sorry if i am sounding like a KF backer, its just that all you reasonable people are freaking out about this, and it bugs me that I am not...so, I guess I am just confused.

How do the commenters know no one but flight crew got off the plane? Are they sure they were at the correct ramp -- Willow Run is kind of sprawling. They would have to have seen the plane land and come in and everyone get off for this to really be dead in the water (assuming Ferentz would have too much dignity to crouch in the cabin until the news crews disappeared).
I don't know why a charter line would fly a crew out to Cedar Rapids to keep a schedule, either.

This is mostly a nitpick because I have been enjoying Hawaii's fun ass brand of football the past few years, but they are much better than they have been historically. Yes I know their competition is weak.
Hawai'i was 0-12 in 1998 and June Jones took them to 9-4 and a share of the WAC Championship in 1999. Jones has gone 75-40 in his time at Hawai'i for a 0.652 winning percentage - a little better than Georgia all-time.
Hawai'i was a 0.552 pct team before Jones, that's about as good as Tulsa and Toledo.

MDan, Jason, and all else.......I have been looking forward to an open coaching search for a few years........i am disappointed in the haste of this apparent ferentz thing.....before we all turn in for the night, I just want to say that I cant get too livid about it because what can I really do....i watch a ton of college football, and I can recongnize the positives of Ferentz, so i am focusing on that....as i will for all the others I hope we interview....thats just my nature.......but trust me, we are all closer to agreement on things than you think.....I am still going to be there for Utah, even if I have never heard of the coach.....i just dont want people to think I am leading the KF for coach club......i did not really think he was a serious candidate until 24 hours ago......I wanted to soothe you guys in case it happened.....i will stop, unless he actually gets hired....then I will continue where I left off here.
Someone earlier said they just discovered this blog about a week ago and have never had as much fun following the team......I discovered this in the wake of the Year of Infinite Pain, and I agree.....I feel so much more connected and into UM football than ever before.....never thought that could happen.....of course, Brian is behind it.....but all of you fellow posters keep me coming back as well....thanks to all of you.....now I am off to bed, and we'll continue this melt down tomorrow.....hopefully it will get me through another dreary work day.

There are two possibilities:
1) "iowahawkeyess" is a seventh-level meta-reference to a poster who believed he started these rumors, but is not him;
2) it's the same guy, and he doesn't realize that the tip he ran with (and which went nowhere, even in the blogosphere) has no connection to reality, but he wants the attention anyway.
I hope it's 1, because then I can appreciate the reference. #2 still wants the money, Lebovski.

@iowahawkeyes
What the hell is with your crap? Odds are tsun will get a credible coach who will continue beat the living crap out of you idiots. All of the hype for tOSU and Iowa last year resulted in pure humiliation on the field. If I was a "hawkeye" I would sit back and hope that tsun takes your friggin' joke of a coach.
Fans of the Maize and Blue, rivalry aside, I don't see you guys grabbing a coach that can't beat Tressel. KF isn't going to come in and make changes that you need, your program is in decline but it's still a college football powerhouse. Hell, let's face it, the whole big10 isn't what it was 5 years ago but teams are recruiting to change that.
I'll admit that most of the year I hate that state up north, and the team they field, but I am also realistic enough to know that so many people here are panicing over what isn't realistic.
Take a few things into consideration:
First off, what is your AD going to feel if he hires someone who's not going to beat us? You've all seen the Cooper era, you know how tOSU fan felt after they let Earl go and replaced him with John Cooper who lost ten times to tsun, I can't see that happening, hell, you already have fans selling their loyalty on ebay.
Second, why would they take a coach that Lloyd could actually beat on the field? You are supposed to be UPGRADING here.
Les Miles may be your next coach, who knows, but I think tsun needs to do like Ohio State did and find a winner from a different area. Maybe try for App States (sorry to mention the school, not trying to incite anything) HC, or someone in AA who's had a good ammount of success.
As much as I would love to see us win 10 out of the 12 meetings with you guys in the future, I don't see that happening, tsun is too proud of a program and has way too much money to hire a bad coach.

Because I'm bored - here's an actual conversation I had with Ron Zook. I swear on my life this is true and took place at Joe's on Weed shortly after he was hired by Illinois.
Me: "What about Iowa this year? They could be solid."
Zook: "Fuck Iowa... Fuck Iowa."
Me: (silence)
He went on to call me a "blue belly" which sort of makes sense. Maize and blue are Michigan's colors. Anyway, I'm going to bed. At least we know our next coach won't be as dumb as Zook.

jamie, indeed life will go on.
I once gave my brother a fake lottery ticket (scratch off) that you get from a novelty store as a joke (along with some real ones). He sratches a bunch of losers and then this fake one (which looks friggin' real!) and freaks out. Starts bouncing off the ceilings - he's won 10,000 dollars. Now I realize I got a problem.
I tell him it's fake and he is fucking pissed. He had really thought in his heart he won 10,000 dollars.
I felt like I hit the lottery when Lloyd Carr retired. My heart would fibrillate at the thought of a dynamic, gutsy football mind leveraging the peerless Michigan tradition into a powerhouse that would sit atop the college world. I know that is possible. I know one day people could say, "Shit, Michigan gets all the talent, all the five stars, of course they win a NC every couple years. Who wouldn't?"
We are unique. We have are the greatest cold weather recruiting dynasty in football, out-recruiting every SEC team this millenium. With Lloyd Carr, a good man but uninspiring, at the helm. What possibilities awaited!
Ferentz would suck all the life out of this football lottery and crash me back to earth, the dream snuffed out. And Brian wouldn't be this far out with all this if it wasn't a real, real threat.
While we fiddle, Rome burns...in the form of Ohio State living my dream.
Good night.

you do realize that half of those teams ranked with less talent than Iowa do not play in the B10. Yes, I know, the B10 isn't what it used to be, but I'd still bet it's 10X harder than the WAC and MWC. It's still a lot tougher than the Big East as well. So don't give me "but look at all of these ranked teams with far less talent! This must, MUST I SAY!, mean that Ferentz sucks at recruiting." Actually, no, it doesn't indicate that at all.

The Carty blog post about the shady stuff that went on at Iowa, the recent rash of arrests there, and the attrition rate tell me that Martin and Lloyd are talking out of both sides of their mouths when they talk about getting a coach that won't embarrass the university. Find me stuff like that from Miles.
This is cronyism at its finest and they have lost all credibility to me. This kind of shit makes me sick and I hope there is fallout.
He's definitely a better coach than Lloyd, but not good enough to be coaching at Michigan.

And anywho, a lot of recruiting is done by assistants, not the HC. If we're all about assistants for Miles doin the dirty work, I'd be fine with good recruiters aiding Ferentz with his supposed weaknesses.
I disagreed more with your rationalization of the idea that Ferentz isn't a good recruiter. That may be true, but using Hawaii et al's records and rankings as a measuring stick was a faulty point. He probably isn't a great recruiter, but I cannot imagine he would be horrible at UM.

I compiled the data for my recruiting analysis and here is where Iowa landed from 2002 through 2006:
Iowa
Place Adjust Ave Stars
51 49 2.59
43 36 2.81
38 38 2.60
11 15 3.22
40 38 2.70
The adjustment is to remove the kicker large classes get from the services. It is a strict measure of quality. In 2007, he was 28th and this year 72nd so far.
Maybe someone can argue this is OK for Iowa. No one can argue this is a resume enhancer to move up to Michigan.

@Anthony
Les doesn't exactly run a sparkling clean program either, I have seen reports of some of his players being arrested too. I can't remember any off hand other than with Ryan Perriloux (sp?) their backup QB, I think last year he was arrested at a casino with a fake id, and this year there was something with him and a fight at a bar, and I believe he was at one time being investigated by the FBI. I am too lazy to look up the stories but if I recall correctly in the first two incidents he was with other players who also got in some trouble, and I believe there are others. So even though Ferentz and Lloyd have issues with player arrests, so do most big time college football programs.

For the record, I know some of you are kidding about the sexual jokes regarding Coleman, but I just think it's really stupid and disrespectful. It kinda reminds me when all of the Henne haters in the first game and a half when everyone chanted for Mallett, and then Mallett came in, sucked a lot worse, and everyone was just like "oh." I don't want us to have an "oh" moment, and we probably will (not to discredit you and your work Brian). Speculation about what is happening is fun, but some of you are taking this really too far. Have some character and be a little rational about this instead of making everything so personal.

The sexual jokes were to lighten up the mood of the board at the time. People were going ape shit on here at the possibility that Ferentz was on that plane.

kgh10: I remember being an insomniac student as well...long time ago.....still an insomniac, but mornings come all too fast for me now.
W/ recruiting, it all depends on what rankings you use....I swear by my annual Phil Steele magazine....i think its far and away the best pre season mag....i look forward to it every July when it hits the stands....its invaluable to my, uh, gambling habit.
Anyway, last 3 years in recruiting according to him Iowa was ranked 15, 27 and 11...each year # 4 in big ten....these are all jrs, sophs, and frosh, but Iowa redshirts almost all incoming Frosh.....so some of those guys are only beginning to see the field as upperclassmen.
UM, by comparision went #5, #4 and #9 w/ this year's class.
I think KF could recruit here, but almost anyone coming in here would have to change strategy and go after guys they would not be able to get at their current school.....can KF step up? That would be the question.
Thats why Miles is attrative because he is already competing against the best of the best in the SEC and national recruiting wars.
Good luck with that Calc.....thats, like, math, right!?!?

As for the comments, I could tell some people weren't kidding, as they were bringing up other things they hated about Carr & Coleman (her political views, etc), and rationalizing how this maddness makes sense. But again, the jokes were made on a poor assumption, and IMO some people weren't joking, but hiding behind the real light-hearted commenters. I just did a little look on the DetNew.com and Freep.com sites and saw no posts regarding a press conference being scheduled. I can't see Ferentz landing in AA and not getting the job. The optics of it would be terrible for Iowa.

You guys are ridiculous. Do you really think that this Ferentz to Michigan deal is even close to being done? Gary Barta (IOWA AD) said that Martin hasnt even asked for permission yet. Do you think your program is as trashy as Miami to pull a move like that? I dont.
Furthermore, you need to quit bitching about Ferentz because he would be a good move for your program. The arguments you guys make are borderline insane. "KF cant recruit at Michigan", "KF cant win at Michigan", "KF is shady and is having off the field problems". Are you people serious?
Get over yourselves here for a second and objectively look at this. Ferentz would win at Michigan, a lot. Michigan sells itself to recruits, bottom line. My retarded shih tzu could get 4 star recruits to come play in AA. I know that you think that recruiting to cold weather might be tough for you but tradition sells and Michigan sells tradition like Good Year sells tires. In Kirk Ferentz, Michigan would be getting one of the most highly regarded coaches in college. By that, I mean all around. He is a class act and he will always be one. He gave Michigan a severe beat down at the Quiet House in 2001 with a bunch of no namers with ZERO STARS.
Look up Dallas Clark and Bob Sanders on Rivals, you wont find them because nobody wanted them. Those two were and still are better than any starting TE or Safety that the Maize has produced since. Look it up, I bet your boy Lloyd Carr recruited a total of nine or more 4 and 5 star recruits at those positions since then and none of them have or ever will measure up to what those guys have done.
I almost pissed myself laughing at the comments about his off the field stuff in the Iowa program while concurrently yelling for Brian Kelley of Cincy. Look at what happened with Kelley at C. Michigan. His squad collectively murdered a guy in a bar. Yep, they are serving prison time for that one. Which guy would you rather have running the show in AA? My guess is that if your IQ is as large as the Michigan unemployment rate, you will want Ferentz over Kelley. The last thing you want is for Mich to be dubbed as the next "U".
But honestly, youre not the only great program in college football anymore. In fact, you are second best in the Big Ten year in and year out. And that is when Iowa, PSU, and Wisconsin are playing poorly. What is funniest is that you all feel that you are entitled to a NC caliber team each and every year. Guess what, Youre not. There are plenty of coaches who dont want to be put under the microscope that you are already placing on a guy who is only rumored to be your next coach by some blogger. Has Michigan football gotten this low? I mean christ, you claim to be the mecca of college football and you are worried about the AD making a hasty decision?
You should be lucky to get Kirk Ferentz but you people will run him out of town when he only wins 11 games and loses to OSU. My guess is that

Well I appreciate your open mind. I always thought it was funny about how much crap people talk about celebrities, as if they know all about their personal lives b/c of some tabloid or media outlet of any kind (be it a blog or MSM). The fact that people go so ape shit over something that even Brian stated was a rumor, is even more amusing, and sometimes infuriating. I mean, although it is a sourced rumor, it's still a rumor. So to say crappy things about the whole clan (Ferentz, Coleman, Martin, Carr, et al), is just annoying to me. That's all it was. I'm all about a good time and jokes, but I just thought it was taken too far and being made far too personal for a completely impersonal rumor.

...my guess is that Ferentz will interview for the job and they will offer it to him. He will then turn it down. In 2005 before Iowa played FLorida in the Outback Bowl (while Mich was in San An Tone for the Alamo), Chris Mortensen reported that the Packers interviewed and offered Ferentz the job. It was true. It was said to be a done deal but Ferentz wanted to stay in Iowa and turned down the Packers. I think that the GB job has a tad bit more clout than the job in AA. Just a thought but I am sure that most any football fan would agree.
Ferentz has also commented in press conferences in Iowa about how ridiculous the shit that fans give coaches in Michigan is. He referenced the PSU game from 05 where Mich beat #8 PSU when Henne hit Manningham in the end zone to win and the media gave the team a B- for the win. haha. you people are hilarious.

Rob...Kelly's squad "collectively murdered a guy at a bar"...really? Wow, glad you know your information. Honestly, I don't think the same people who question Kirk Ferentz's cleanliness are the same people who are pimping Kelly. If they are, I would agree with you about the hypocrisy, but I never saw Ferentz as anything but a class act and nice guy. So is Lloyd, but it didn't stop him from having a lot of arrests. I don't think I'm in the minority of people who believe this, so please don't act like we all believe that Ferentz is dirty and still want Kelly.

Right. Sourced rumor or not, the potential of Ferentz coming here concerns a lot of fans and rightfully so. With as much crap as Michigan has received this year I think people are freaking out even though it's a sourced rumor because they feel we should be moving the program up not staying the same or possibly sinking below. I agree with some, had this been three years ago the mood toward this sourced rumor might be different, but people can't help but start to feel worry when we have a big opportunity to change and there is the potential we might go with Ferentz.
I tend to be biased though, I have been pulling for Miles for awhile. :)

Here is what scares me about KF:
From http://hawkeyesports.cstv.com/
sp...eefe_ken00.html
Ken O'Keefe is in ninth eighth season as offensive coordinator at the University of Iowa. O'Keefe is in his eighth season as Iowa's quarterbacks coach after coaching Hawkeye wide receivers in 1999.
Norm Parker is in his ninth year as defensive coordinator at the University of Iowa. He also coaches the Hawkeye linebackers. In his first three years on the Iowa staff he coached the outside linebackers.
He has the same don't change things when they aren't woring mentality as Lloyd. This is what we can't accept. This is why were are now looking up at OSU.

Korea - Well I wasn't...so there. Yeesh...I didn't think I'd have to defend the fact that I hated most of the personal insults and death wishes against Carr/Coleman/Ferentz & Co., but hey, if you're willing to put up a fight about it, I'm telling you that you thought wrong. I can't tell if you're joking or not in this instance, so I'm not going to get too riled up about your comment about me not caring about Ferentz' death wish.
00goblue00 - trust me, I'm no Ferentz supporter, but again, I just thought people were taking things too far. That's all. I have no allegiances to Ferentz or anything, but I don't know the dude and I'm certainly not going to wish ill will upon him or make personal insults against him. If there's anything I'll criticize about Ferentz, it's his coaching...and that is it. Nothing more, nothing less.
As for the speculation of Coleman and Carr's involvement, we don't really know for certain how much involvement they have...it's not like Ferentz is somebody Martin couldn't POSSIBLY consider on his own. The exaggeration that Ferentz is our top candidate is, IMO, unfounded. So to make stupid comments about how Carr is trying to ruin this program and Coleman is a slut, etc...that doesn't do anything for our coaching search. It isn't being proactive...it's being immature and irrational.

Hey Rob Houghtlin, the biggest problem with KF for M fans isn't that he's classy or not classy or that we think we are entitled to a national championship - it's that the guy just lost to Western and runs a more boring and inept offense than we do, ok? Look at the Iowa roster this year and the BUM QB that played in Iowa City. He was a far cry from Drew Tate and light year behind Brad Banks. They played 31 FROSH, most of which werent highly touted. If you gave Kirk Ferentz the players that UM has, they would be ridiculous. Every five star lineman in the nation would want to come play there and the skill players will ALWAYS be there. This guy has beaten Tressel a lot more recently than Carr did. He won the same amount of B10 Titles since the 2001 run and he sure as hell didnt have the talent.

Maybe we instinctively feel the need to say because not many women post on boards and blogs? So when they do and they say something insightful, maybe they want men to know that we are just as capable of keeping up and making profound statements as they are?? I dunno.

Mine I guess. Maybe I shouldn't have made a joke about posessing the abilities to make babies with Mike Hart. Oops, my bad.

Rob,
I appreciate your comparison between Michigan and Iowa over the last few seasons. I don't argue that KF had a few great seasons. The fact that he has had three in a row that would cause a run on the hospital for nitro in AA is an issue.
While we have had no truly Nebraska/Callahan seasons under Carr, the general belief following the last three years, is the we are slipping. We are no longer at the top of the conference as it is becoming evident that OSU has overtaken us under Tressel. If you compared if there were favorable comparisons to Iowa under KF to OSU under Tressel since 2002, I'm very interested in that.
I'm sick and tired of talking heads like MArk May and colin cowherd (spl?) spouting off on how badly we have fallen. I believe, and I think that I speak for most other alums in saying this, is that Michigan football has an opportunity for the first time since 1968 to identify and hire the absolute best coach for the job.
At this point, if Carr wasn't the head coach, he clearly wouldn't be considered. So comparisons between what other programs have done that have not had an upward trajectory or at best only in line with what we have produced in the last few years is frankly unappealing.
After the 2005 season, I started thinking about the guys who may replace Carr. KF was on my personal list at the time. Unfortunately, the last two years have now shown well for KF.

You still don't get it. It's not about kgh10 or 00goblue00 or any one comment. It's about every female on the internet since Windows '95 injecting gender into totally unrelated topics.
