You bring up a good point. This would probably explain why Michigan hasn't had similar ceremonies at bowl games

In a perfect world ASU and Oregon win out w/ Oregan playing for the NC and we get ASU in the Rose Bowl. Erickson may drive his golf cart into a volcano, but I don't think we will be able to give El Presidente Carpenter the ability to run the zone spread. Please help us, Baby Jesus, if we have to play WVU or even worse, Oregon again.
Seriously, how much luster would it take off 10 straight wins including one against OSU if we had to play Oregon again in the Rose Bowl? We may have shored up some things on defense, but they have proven that our game was no fluke. It is like the spirit of Troy Smith has entered Dixon and all he sees every game is a sea of winged helmets.

Between Braylon's first TD catch in 2004, Braylon's second TD catch, Avant's fade TD catch in the corner, Avant's 2005 TD catch, Manningham's 2007 first-half TD catch, and Manningham's second TD catch, that right corner of the end zone has been a dagger in the heart of the Spartans. These are just the ones I remember; it's pretty significant that that many important TD catches have been made in the same spot by the same means.
Also, heart aflutters at Hart's first play from scrimmage being a 60 yard run where he gets right up and screams at the MSU bench. And Sparty still claims they'd never ever want him on their team.

I kind of have a soft spot in my heart for the 2005 team. They lost a lot of heartbreakers but also showed a lot of resolve in beating Sparty and Iowa in OT and crushing Penn State's dream season. It's hard to believe that they actually went in to the OSU game with a shot at winning the Big 10 title. Amazingly, Carr's last 11 teams (including this one) have went into the OSU game with a shot at winning the Big 10. That's pretty impressive.

Think of how awesome it would be if Michigan could beat OSU and then somehow beat Oregon in the Rose Bowl. It would be the perfect way for Lloyd to go out, exorcising years worth of demons in 2 games - beating OSU and then a Pac 10 spread option team with a mobile quarterback in the Rose Bowl.
That would be the dream scenario. Sigh.

Fritz Crisler first debuted the winged helmet at Princeton University in 1935. When Crisler was hired by the University of Michigan he brought the new helmet style with him.
"Crisler had introduced a helmet at Princeton in 1935 that should look remarkably familiar to Wolverine fans. The winged design simply took advantage of features of a helmet the Spalding sporting goods company and advertised in the 1937 edition the Official Intercollegiate Football Guide. Crisler's 1938 innovation at Michigan was to paint the helmet maize and blue."

I was at the screening, too. At the time, I felt that it was more OSU... what with the portions on Earle Bruce, Cooper and Tressel.. and nothing on Lloyd and Moeller. But then, I remembered they did a segment on Michigna guys from Ohio and whatnot. So, I thought it was semi-balanced.

Le Duex...that's weak and I have no idea where it came from. Furthermore, we didn't steal them...Fritz Crisler created the Winged Helmet while he was at Princeton and and brought it with him when he was hired at Michigan 3 years later. At that time Princeton ceased using it. So I'm not sure why you even brought that up...but it was weak...and uninformed.

This continued effort to make Les Miles seem smarter than he is makes me queasy. Seriously. The dude is positively Cro-Magnon. There's like 8 coaches in the SEC I'd hire before him.....
Sure. The numbers say penalties are good. But that really depends on the kind and the type you like to rack up.
Illinois / Sparty 4th quarter personal fouls that keep drives alive? Those are not good. And those are the kind that LSU is racking up this year.
IMHO if it's a tradition hand-off to a Michigan Man, it's English's job. And I'm pretty sure that dude can recruit and he can coach.
If Les has any shot, it means there is a national search on. Which means many more qualified candidates will reveal themselves... figures of tact and decorum and strategy like Tedford.

Re: Miles
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21536408/
with this interesting nugget, among others (involving what must have been post-cyst recruiting)...
"The dominos will start to fall as long and [sic] Miles can go to Michigan. Of course, the ghost of Bo Schembechler could haunt him and hold up that domino. In Jan. 2006, Jai Eugene, a gifted defensive back from St. Rose, La., committed to Michigan on national television. A week later, Miles the Michigan Man turned Eugene back to LSU prompting a temper tantrum from Schembechler. The legendary coach, who died in 2006, called Miles from the UM football office and blasted his former assistant coach for not honoring Eugene’s commitment to Michigan. He told Miles it was not the way a Michigan Man would behave and then he hung up on Miles. When Jim Harbaugh’s people start burning the phone lines to lobby him for the job, or Carr tries to rally support for defensive coordinator Ron English, they could all say, “You know, Bo, didn’t like Miles.”

That wasn't a cyst; it was the balls in Les's head growing too large to fit in his skull. The doctors had to, like, drain them of macho awesome juice or something to make them go down. And they have to do it every few years.
The screening of The Rivalry last night was pretty good. Toward the end, they did show lots of tOSU, but I didn't think it was so bad because they showed what a bunch of retarded goofballs they are, mostly. Great website re: the history of the winged UM helmet. I've known a few diehard UM fans that have no affiliation with the school or state whatsoever--they just loved the helmets as little kids and have followed the team ever since. I would be ok with playing WVU in the Rose, although I don't think the Rose Bowl committee would select them as the at-large (assuming Oregon is in the MNC game). Sugar would get first crack (if LSU is #1) and could take WVU as its first at-large pick anyway. Closer for the mountain-folk, who have little west coast and national appeal, to travel. If ASU wins out, you could see Michigan play the Sun Devils. That would be interesting.
On WVU, though, I would fear them FAR less than an Oregon rematch. Slaton and White have been known to disappear in big games against good defenses. Assuming Michigan has a "good" defense, well you know...

I guess I'm still one of the only Carr supporters out there. My premise is he is the right person for Michigan and he get's results on the field. In a sport where there is typically only one undefeated team per season (if that) the losses are enevitable and you don't plan for them but you accept them as a reality and judge on overall records and accomplishments. That said, Lloyd doesn't deserve to be forced into retirement any more than Joe Pa or Bobby Bowden. What's worse is that you also never know what you are going to get when you shell out big dollars for a new coach.. Ask Notre Dame and Nebraska. That said he is constantly criticized for playcalling that is conservative. However, he doesn't call the plays.
As for last weeks game, come on. He gets no credit for calling the deep bombs that left Mario wide open. I am disappointed Henne didn't hit him, but really those are execution errors rather than bad playcalling.
Some criticism of playcalling is warranted but I dont' think are play calling is that different than any of the top programs in the country it is more a matter of execution.
Let's as Michigan fans support Lloyd to the fullest until he decides to retire and stop focusing on Les Miles who as far as I'm concerned is certainly not a step up from Lloyd until he proves it on the field.

That's the real truth behind the rumor of Miles buying a house in Ann Arbor. Les has to come here periodically for treatments at the Center for Cranial Ball Juice Draining at UM Hospital. The treatments are very tough, and he needs a local place to recuperate in before he goes back down to Baton Rouge.
I'd love to see us play WVU... it would be a great game with lots of big plays. It would not be in the Rose Bowl, though. The RB people have a strong preference for PAC10 teams if they can get one that's good enough. Between ASU and Oregon, that won't be hard.
