Re: $1.8m--there was an unconfirmed rumor (that's redundant, isn't it?) on the Scout board that the contract offered to Miles called for $1.9m as a base salary with another $1m in annual incentives. That figure came from a supposed email sent from one allegedly connected guy to another explaining that Lloyd is going to oversee football in his AAD role and that he was purposely putting the screws to Miles via this contract and other means. Gist of the email, overall, was that Lloyd purposely scared away Miles.

That seems so perfect. I mean, what else would the AD of a respected, tradition laden program like Michigan be doing besides taking the yacht out at the beginning of December?

If Tom O'Brien becomes our next coach, I will cry. He makes Lloyd look like an innovator and gambler. He's one of the most boring men on earth and he's a mediocre coach. The only bonus would be that we'd probably have really good offensive lines again. The problem would be that we'd never win an important game again.

If Carr has anything to do with this, it's his best trick play he's ever played..and it wasn't on the football field!

Here's that entire quote from the "insulting" quote:
At times like this, you hear all kinds of stories/speculation.
I heard, for example, Michigan's "unofficial" offer to Miles was close to "insulting."
AKA this is them admitting that this may very well be heresay. Any time you say "I HEARD this or that" why is that newsworthy? Seriously please let this go. The sailboat rumor is probably true. Bill Martin owns a 70ft. racing sailboat called Stripes that competes in the Port-Huron-Mackinac race and Chicago-Mackinac race every year. Now he's not out sailing it in the Great Lakes right now, but he may be on a different boat down south this past weekend. He is a member of Bayview Yacht Club and probably was participating in a different regatta. Google Stripes, Santa Cruz 70 and you will find that he is the owner.
As far as the rumor that he couldn't be gotten a hold of because he was on his boat is complete bullshit if true. This coaching job is more important that racing his boats.

As this drags on the AD is digging themselves a deeper hole. The majority want Miles, the search Committee wants Miles, and he's clearly the best fit due to his coaching, history with the school, and the fact he LOVES the school. No other coach is going to get a fair shake from the fans as long as Les is at LSU winning while we're going 8-4 in an inferior conference with some Lloyd clone. This has disaster written all over it. I feel like I'm living through the time when ND blew the O'Leary/Willingham hiring, except its my favorite team pissing down its own leg.

There's nothing inherently wrong with traditional and old-fashioned methods, but Michigan's coaching search is not taking place in a vacuum.

People, let's keep our heads here. Yes, this may end up with Oh the Humanity. Or it may end up with some wilder than our craziest fantasies superduper new HC. But either way, let's keep our heads on straight and try to show some ability to handle adversity here.
Sheesh, we all sit around and bitch at the players when they make a mistake. Now's our turn to perform, and we can do nothing better than panic? C'mon already.
I've got issues with Lloyd, but in the end, he was a great representative for M.
So, to quote the quoter:
"If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs ...
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster and treat those two imposters just the same ..."
So yeah, the internets are here to intertain us, and this crazy nutso stuff can be fun, be we're losing for the most part.

Let's see if we can offer some sanity to this. Before anybody burns theire Desmond jersey or cries or starts rooting for the Vest. Please consider the following coaching searches and the average fan reaction.
Tressel-What??? How do we hire this guy?? He doesn't even coach D1 football, we're on to our 4th choice, we can't beat Michigan the program is in shambles.
Carroll-We hired a NFL retread and we go tturned down by guys with jobs at Oregon and Oregon St. USC is officially dead.
Weis-YESS!!!! WE got a guy that can recruit and bring back the swagger.
Richt-Well he is from Florida St and we suck so I'll give him a chance even though he has never been a head coach.
Meyer-Awesome we have great talent and he will mold it. Good Call.
Miles-Why are we hiring this guy, we have NC talent and he's done nothing at OSU to warrant this job.
Stoops-We're Oklahoma why are we hiring a coordinator with no head coaching experience, that's not from around here??
You never know, it's frustrating, I agree but the sky isn't falling yet.

I know you are probably all wondering where I have been today. Just kidding!
But seriously, these new posts are getting a bit out of hand. I sometimes like rumors as much as the next guy, but they are all starting to sound the same, which leads to everyone on here arguing the same moot points day after day. How many times are we going to beat this into the ground? Miles may or may not have gotten f-ed by Michigan, here is list xyz of who could potentially be the next coach at Michigan. Here is why I like candidate x while someone responds back here is why I don't like candidate x for the 9,000,000th time. Why isn't candidate B on the list? This is why candidate B is not on the list for the 87,000th time. It's obvious after this past weekend they are going to be extremely tight lipped on it. Can we really blame them?
I have crossed over to the other side on this issue and until we find a new coach and it is announced I'm kinda over it lol. I have let Miles go and I was one of his biggest supporters, the rest of us probably should too! :)

For this ridiculous example, if Martin was going to contact Stoops, he'd be doing it now. However, if we don't have a coach by the new year (and no interim), I can only believe it is because we are getting Stoops/Miles/Meyer. I am just unable to believe, that with MONTHS to prepare and research a list of candidates, Martin would fail to make a hire before 2008 unless it was a coach in a BCS bowl.
Definition of a true Michigan fan: Unlike Notre Dame fans, you realize how freaking unrealistic something is, can disassociate yourself from it, but hope for the .05% chance it can happen. I mean, Miles is gone, Stoops is gone, Urban isn't coming, but, it's feasible in that .05% scenario isn't it?

Did you see that chimpanzee vs. humans thing on ABC last night?
Chimps were smarter than humans--college student humans.
Got me to thinking....
Why couldn't a chimp be a champ at UM?
I'm telling you, we get the right chimp in place and the team would go bananas. Chimp probably be pretty cheap 2. There has to be some monkey around that would take the job.

im sorry to tell you guys....
sometimes the best coach, isnt the best known coach. Some places may need a big name coach to get recruits, michigan does not. How many times this year did i or others cooent on the lack of "coaching" that was going on concerning game planning, game changes, or player technique... michigan needs the best "coach" not the best name....
and i for one, hope they take their time, and find him.

WOOO on Tedford?!?!?! Tell me you aren't serious.
I was high on him too and I think all coaches are entitled to one bad year if the circumstances are understandable. But Tedford had a clearly talented team (September wins over Tennessee and Oregon) that quit and fell apart. That is a huge red flag.
It is either a red flag about him as a motivator that he wasn't able to stop the ship from sinking or as a recruiter if he has assembled a group of kids with no competitive fire.
For as many things as there were to like about him, the way Cal's season went terrifies me.

As long as Brian tags stuff as rumors, I completely appreciate having a single source for all the rivals/scout/other message boards/pipe dreams/rumors out there. The best part of this blog is Brian has great commentary, and it contains facts/news/analysis/rumors/etc, and it is all properly labeled. He also presents FACTS and RUMORS separately, not like the MSM, which turns rumors into facts, and presents opinions as facts as well. I now support the candidacy of Mike Debord, not as a winner but as a purgative or laxative for the inner Michigan football family. Sometimes there is something ailing you that will affect the health of everything else, and nothing good will happen until that bad thing is eliminated from the body.
Take two years of MD, drink plenty of fluids (preferably containing alcohol), and at the end the situation will be more conducive to making the changes that need to happen.

Until then, lets watch hockey, pray that bball can find its way this winter, monitor recruiting and get excited for the College World Series run this spring.

huh?, Inca Kola:
I should've clarified my "losing English" post.
The appearance is that Michigan is conducting this coaching search at a glacial pace. The risk of using this method is that all of the desirable coaching candidates wind up staying put or signing elsewhere...
...thus leaving English and MDB as "desirable" (using the term loosely!) in-house candidates for the AD. Note English has already received a 2nd interview. Employers usually don't hold 2nd interview unless they have some level of interest.
In addition, English has already had an interview with Arkansas, and his West Coast ties make it probable he gets looks from UCLA and Washington State.
Not Michigan level programs by any stretch, but English would be THE MAN at either. Most people would rather run their own show than have the associate AD casting a long shadow over them. Expectations at either program would also be lower than they are at Michigan.

Guy who must be rolling in his grave...Don Canham. Some of Canham's hires: Schembechler, Johnny Orr, Bill Frieder, and Red Berenson. Okay Orr and Frieder were assistant elevations and Frieder had a legacy of NCAA Tournament underachievement and the ill-timed ASU departure. Still Frieder's players won the NC. At least our basketball program was relevant on the Big Ten and NCAA scene. Saturday's debacle with Miles and then Martin's first basketball hire beating his second basketball hire with an Ivy League team was rich.
For as successful and powerful Schembechler was, he always knew and respected that Canham was his boss (may not have liked it, but knew it). Think Canham would have been controlled by Lloyd Carr or Canham would have told Lloyd to follow his orders on who was going to hire and issue a public statement in support?

ok football talk...
what worries me and florida more than anything else isnt the qb draw... the reason is becasue unlike the other spread runners we have seen dixon, juice. Tebow does not sell hte pass fake very well, it is not a delayed draw, its almost like a qb isso, or lead... which is beeter for michigan, since it gives our uncoached dl' less time to getup field and out of possition..
the part im worried about is the option pass... tebow is great at faking the run and passing.. either with the jump dump passs over the middle, or the down the line true option pass... with the way that our safities are expected to fill cut bakc lanes, because of the inablilty of our lb's to be coached right, or to get oof blocks, i fear this is a big problem for michigans defense...
thats my first thoughts on it anyways...

You know, I'm starting to just think the vast majority of our problems is our S&C program. We can stop the spread (Purdue, MSU) but not with a mobile QB (Oregon, App State). We can beat fast but not strong (Northwestern) and can beat strong but not fast (PSU), but lose to fast and strong (Oregon, USC, Texas, tOSU).
Clearly we recruit fast players (Crable, Breaston, CBrown, Donovan Warren). After watching Oklaholma's speedy, punishing defense, I can't believe they recruited that much differently from us. Their defense was just much more explosive.
Clearly UM fails (HIT blows) at physically developing players. However, I think that the players are also put in a position to fail. Why is Crable the LB always in charge of keeping contain? It's a complete waste of his speed. Any LB can get back there, and I'm sure a smarter one would not blow contain half the time. Seems to me Crable would be the ideal QB spy, easily playing a drop zone to take away the middle of the field, but fast enough to keep the QB from taking off. Also, why wasn't Crable the LB on the Wisconsin tight end?
I'm just confused why we don't better utilize our players. Our S&C program clearly doesn't do us any favors, but then we only hurt ourselves by not putting players in better position to excel.

Believe it or not, but I'm leaning towards taking Illinois +13 and going under 51.....Illini D is for real, USC has not put together a great offense this year...at least not as good as Palmer's senior year or the Leinart years.....they've kind of stopped and started all year.....Carroll makes great halftime adjustments, typically, so that worries me....but any team who can go into the Shoe and control the game like that can do the dame thing to USC.....dont sleep on Illinois.
Davis will thwart Booty once or twice; Lehman will be all over the field and Illini's D-front can beat USC O-line.....our game w/ the Illini next September already worries me.

On a pure numbers basis, if we look at the defensive stats for this season:
Rushing:
Michigan: 150.8/ypg
Florida: 99.3/ypg
Passing:
Michigan: 179.7/ypg
Florida: 249.0/ypg
Totally oversimplified, but on the numbers alone it appears as though Michigan is going to have a tough time running on Florida and would be wise to pass. Pray that Henne is as healthy as possible and that MM and AA have their heads in the game, or at least wish to raise their draft stock.
Florida could probably have success with a balanced or run heavy attack. Georgia appeared to beat Florida with a balanced attack. Somehow, their top back Moreno had a career night with 188 yards on Florida.

But to suggest that the fans can do anything to sway the athletic administration and His Holiness Carr, I think you are sorely mistaken...It took mupltiple blunders of epic proportions to get the last AD canned...Remember the Halo, the Internet and the Goss mess? He was finally let go and things got a little better... No, Bill Martin thinks he knows what he's doing at a school who hasn't had to play the head football coach search game...Ever. And I am pretty sure that this group was not completely sold on Miles and they believe that they can "do better" with someone else. But send your letters if you feel it will help...Or just call and cancel next year's season tickets when they hire the wrong guy. That might speak louder than a letter...

You know, all this bashing on Les for that timeout he tried to call after the interception is stupid. Who cares? Lloyd doesn't even use timeouts (see the Texas game where he decided to let the game be settled on a 40yd field goal). It makes much more sense to protect your players from the possibility of failing. This way the game was all on Texas, not on freshman Henne trying to lead a drive with 45seconds left. Can you actually argue that a few stupid mistakes in the heat of a game is worse than the gross mismanagement and pure failure to coach that is Lloyd Carr and his staff?

about fast and explosive...
2 things
#1 crable is not as fast as advertised.... the play we use to justify his spead was more about desire and angle, than spead, any football guy knows about pursuit angles... he is fast, but not as fast as any of the lb's at OK.
#2 players can not be explosive when they either distrust wheather or not their teammates will do their jobs, thus freeing them up to do their jobs and their jobs only full speed, or if they are confused as to their responsiblity..... all of that falls on the shoulders of the positon coaches... imo

@ Gingell
If Les's biggest strength is that he hires good coordinators, why not just hire the coordinators?
The valid criticisms of Carr all come from his in-game coaching, right? Doesn't adjust well, etc. In-game coaching is exactly Les Miles' biggest weakness. He's proven it game after game. People keep saying they want something different from the new head coach. Les Miles isn't something different. He's just the flipside of bad in-game coaching; crazy aggressive with shitty clock management.

@Daniel L,
The national perception of UM is that it is the place where 5-star recruits go to get slower and weaker.....give me an updated and modern S/C program and just about any coach, on anyone's lst will have us kicking ass like we used to kick ass.....oh, and a little extra focus on special teams wont hurt either.
We used to run the same plays over and over again yet nobody could stop us......we still have the same playbook, but now our opposition is faster and stronger than us, and we look confused and suck....i'm convinced that the zone blocking we run now is an attempt to circumvent the fact that we cant man up and go head to head anymore, but of course, with the D-line always faster than our O-line.....well, you get the picture.

The chimp says he would run a version of the veer/spread/power offense. It depends on which QB he puts in the game. He's high on McGuffie and Christian Wilson--wants to adjust the offense to their skill set. Says he will kick Manningham off the team. Steven Threet may get more reps, 2.

Jamie,
USC is playing pretty much a home game. Booty is back. They looked scary good in their last game.
Who's Illinois' QB? Oh yeah. He's gonna die. The USC secondary will own those young, inexperienced receivers.
The Illini running game will perish under the USC linebackers speed. Remember the UM game last year?
Sure, the Illini will get a few stops. A few.
The line is ONLY 13? The under looks good though. For some reason. Have to admit. 35-10. My prediction.

He ran down Ringer. I'm not sure what you mean about angles, but Ringer was running straight up the sideline. There is no pursuit angle that lends itself to catching him from behind. That is just pure speed.

Daniel L-
Thanks for another fantastic post!
You are correct that HIT is garbage. It only works if you are a professional body-building, drug-enhanced, genetic freak like Mike Mentzer, Casey Viator, or Dorian Yates.
Yates may not be the best example, since he had to modify the basic HIT principles to achieve his bodybuilding titles.

Can't remember where I saw this, but Jim Grobe was quoted as saying that he's happy at Wake Forest, but that he's not "certain" it's his last stop.
This came up in reference to the fact that he interviewed for the Nebraska job.
Sounds like he would listen to offers. And he's not on record as saying "no" to Michigan.

Um, Dex, do you understand triangles? Let's look at it this way. You are on the right sideline at the goal line. I am 30 yards to your left across the field, but also on the goal line. For me to catch you on the 40yard line, I would have to run 50 yards to your 40 yards. A pursuit angle ONLY makes sense if you are in FRONT of the person. You will never catch a person from behind if they are faster than you. End of story.

But I STILL think we could get LM if we wanted him. He KEEPS leaving openings. And now he probably won't sign a contract until after the NC. But since the buyout is the same, the new conract does not mean much except the asking price has gone up.
I've changed my mind on Miles. I've gone from being very pissed off at him to upset with the U-M Admin over its handling of this. The guy just wants to know he has the job before he gives up a good thing. Who wouldn't want the same thing in his position?
RE: his comments. He's in a corner now. He is saying what he has too, but if he wins an NC and leaves for Mich, no one will really trash him. What more could he do for LSU?

@ AAB,
I was never one of the big Miles proponents and agree that he has not proven himself a great game day coach. But Carr was one of the worst---always having underachieving seasons, run left strategy, and unprepared teams. I always said Carr was one of the worst 25 coaches in Div 1A, but was lucky to have this program cover his flaws. It's like giving the keys to one of the fastest 5 cars in a race (Michigan's program), to one of the worst 120 drivers (the coaches). You can only f-up so bad.
Further, I was never a Miles fan, but at least he has balls and passion. Lloyd didn't even have that these past few years.
In terms of defending Miles, I think our AD did him wrong here, and it is embarrassing. If he wasnt the guy, fine, but they f-ed this up ridiculously.
And lastly---Miles managed 33-6 in the toughest conference over the past 3 years. Did he lose some he should't have---probably. But obviously he's doing something right.

daniel you do realize, that ringer ran across the field first right, think of it as he ran two sides of the triangle, to crables 1.
crbale is a very average football player, who makes big plays, but misses on more big plays, and plays out of control, we will be a better defense without him, if the next in line is coachable.... english has been frustrated with his lack of doing his job, all season long. now like i said, perhaps its becasue crable doesnt turst others to do their jobs, idk.

Anon,
I was thinking something like 21-10 USC.....but, I am a believer in the Illini D....very talented, fast and well coached, believe it or not.
Think it plays out a lot like last year's Granddaddy.....a real low scoring first half....USC flexes itself in the second half, sure....but Juice does not throw a INT into the USC D-line like Henne and they just wont be able to bomb away over the top against that Illini secondary like they did vs Mich.....Vontae Davis will have a big second half INT that keeps the Illini in the game and saves my cover!

I'm a lot less concerned with balls and passion than I am with competence. In my mind, managing to coach that LSU team to 2 losses is the biggest indictment of a coach that anyone can make, far worse than Lloyd going 9-3 with less talent.

It's not that I think Crable is a great player. I think he's badly coached. And no, I have not done a pursuit angle drill. That's not my point though. IIRC the last 20-35 yards Ringer was running straight down the sideline. Unless Crable was in front of him THE WHOLE TIME, he out ran him the last 20-35 yards. That's my point. Even if Ringer slowed a bit, Crable sprinted right at the start of the play, dove, missed the tackle, and still caught Ringer. I think that's somewhat impressive.

2 losses in the SEC where you play Auburn, Georgia, Florida, Tenn, etc. is an indictment.
I'll give you this---they lost the two games on their schedule they probably shouldnt have.
But you want and indictment of a coach....
Losing to Appy State.
How about losing to Minnesota (2005) at home.
Blowing the national title (1999) by allowing Illinois to come back at Mich stadium
Giving up 54 to NW to lose a shot at the Rose Bowl (2000)
Need I continue? Should I name some of the talent on those teams---Tom Brady, Anthony Thomas, David Terrel, Marquise Walker.

It would not be classy to get creative with personelle positions and play calling. We must uphold the standards and traditions of Michigan. If you have and LB by your name, you can only rush the QB from the linebacker position. And we will run left and up the middle , 2.5 yards at a time.

Just because Crable is bigger, does not mean he is stronger. There is a huge difference in machine vs free weight training. Pushing 500lb on a squat MACHINE is nowhere near the same as a 500lb squat with free weights. I had a friend in HS who took protein and packed in calories and gained a ton of size, but lost his speed. He went from a top sprinter to average in 6 months. But he gained 15 pounds of muscle fast.

I really don't care if anyone here believes me or not, but I have it on good authority that Carr was asked to wait until after the bowl games to announce his retirementment. Carr realized why this was being asked and refused to comply. Carr reaally must despise Les Miles for some reason.
In this light, I see Carr putting his personal fued with Miles above what's good for the program. Is see Carr hirng his cronies at key positions rather than doing what's best for the program.
