It seems like Vin and maybe Big Gay Heart equate "Moneyball" with being cheap. But I don't think that's true.
I believe Moneyball is simply about extracting maximum value. That doesn't necessarily mean being cheap, but it does mean that franchises with less resources are going to be more willing and able to play Moneyball- they have to, if they want to compete. So the Texas Techs and the West Virginias and the Oakland A's of the world must scratch and claw and innovate in order to obtain victories over the Texases, Michigans, and New York Yankees of the world.
And as Brian and Ninja Football have pointed out, when you take that Moneyball/maximum value extraction mindset and put it in a franchise with lots of resources, championships will result.
But again...Moneyball =/= Being Cheap.

Other Chris from a couple posts ago (I was out working, so I couldn't respond before the blizzard of new posts): when I go to Michigan games, I'm there as a spectator only. Right now my only media affiliation (and it's a pretty loose freelance affiliation) is with a small newspaper in a small town, and when it comes to sports, the only place that gets me is high school sporting events. I think I would pretty much die of happiness if I got to shoot a Michigan football game from the sidelines, but that would require a major miracle, or a massive boost to my fledgling career (which I don't necessarily need right now, as I actually enjoy shooting local sports).
And now, we send you back to your regularly-scheduled Comcast bashing.

I was thinking of broadcatsing all the games via sopcast or TVants over at BeatOSU, but nothing can be guaranteed. I'd set it up and it'd run on one channel all day, so if you wanted varying channels or games you'd be s.o.l., but at least you could watch us if you're out of the country/region.

Is it possible? A West Virginian siding with Coach Rod? Article makes good point that WV is spending a boatload of money on lawyer fees, so why not just take a reduced settlement and cut out greedy lawyers instead of going for the full amount and then forking over a good percentage to lawyers, the biggest scumbags in the world? It'd be in the best interests of the law firm representing WV to drag this on till next year; money, money, money...

Have we solved the problem of Ygeny's banner needing to be more evil looking? I don't know about you guys, but evil is cool if you ask me. I dig evil. I want the Mgoblog banner to feature an evil looking UM football player. Get it done.
My suggestion is to give the eyes just a tad more form; let them stand out about 6% more--NOT TOO MUCH.
Then you need a smile. Not a gaping Sparty "Hey, Cheeze Whiz is on sale" smile, but a subtle, wry, almost "is he smiling" smile. The kind that says "I'm evil, and it's pretty cool, actually. I get to do evil stuff sometimes. But mostly, when I walk by, people just shiver, and pretend they aren;t looking at me. The I curse them, maybe have their dog run in front of the bus or something and not get killed, just lose a couple legs so they always wonder if it was me that did it. Hey, anyone got a Coke? Even Demons get thirsty. Is this interview almost over?"
The kind of smile that says satisfaction. You picture Milton's Satan: Evil, fucked, kicked out of Heaven, but growing into the role. After the flight back to Earth, he's ready to kick some apple eatin' ass. Get the bitch, have HER fuck the guy over. Good evil stuff.
Yvgeny, get on it.

I'll be recording all the games on ABC in HD this Fall - there will be two seperate releases, a 720x480 DVD .iso and a 1280x720 MPEG-2 version. Perhaps a 960x544 .mp4 release if there's enough interest.
They will be released on mgovideo.com
One request though for those of you who have Comcast and are somewhat computer savvy - this device (http://www.hauppauge.com/site/products/
data_hdpvr.html) will allow you to record HD through component video, which will be key to getting the games on the Big Ten network this fall. I can work with you on how to set this up provided that you have some interest and don't mind dropping $250, to get a unit.
Leave a comment if this sounds like something you'd like to do.

Dex, there's a soap opera tier if that makes you feel any better. Sports gets like AT LEAST 4 channels on basic cable (with WOW I get ESPN, ESPN2, FSN, ESPN Classic, Golf Channel, SPEED) along with frequent primetime spots on network television and local sports channels. Lifetime occupies one channel, it's not even a similar comparison. (For the record, I don't watch Lifetime, I really only watch tv for sports, but the point still stands). Basically, stop complaining.

the religious fanatic channels pay the cable companies to show their channels. while i find this totally disgusting for no apparent reason, it's a big reason cable bills are 'only' $X/month. same for the shopping channels, i think. i'm waiting for the voodoo & scientology channels to show up. then, eventually the church of star trek.

I think the problem with Lifetime is that they don't even bother to pretend that they might attempt to diversify their lineup. If I were a woman I would be offended that the network thinks that they can pidgeonhole women into two groups (i) those that got pregnant as teens; or (ii) those that get beaten by their husbands. The anorexics are simply subgroups of the other two. What ever happened to (iii) those who are hot and promiscuous lesbians? They are women too!

so i downloaded the NCAA 09 demo on xbox live. the throw away button (now RB) is the biggest pain in the ass ever. its an automatic intentional grounding... not to mention I keep trying to throw dump passes into the crowd.
the QB confidence thing is awesome, and for split screens you can choose between two bluff plays and a your actual play call so when you play an opponent they dont know what play your calling. the cutbacks are insane. its a lot harder to break tackles as well. all awesome. the only thing i hate about the demo is its just LSU @ OSU with 2 minute quarters. When I played my buddy we each got one possession.

Presently watching WVU vs Cinn on ESPN U.
There's no way our offense can look like this. White is carrying the ball A LOT (25 carries in the 4th q) and I can't see us doing this:
* depth chart is unclear
* Threet does not have 4.3 speed
* RR does not want to signal "every time Feagin is in its a QB keep"
When he has thrown (19 att) its been shorter stuff -- the run sets up the pass.

Comcast just bowed to economic reality, at least within the B10 footprint. Discretionary spending on non-essentials is going in the dumper, and prospects for persuading people to ante up extra dough aren't great right now. WEST TEXAS BLUE, you FUCKING PIECE OF WORTHLESS SHIT. Yeah everyone like you says lawyers are the biggest scumbags on earth until you find yourself in the drunk tank or trying to get part of the will that your white-trash pappy cut you out of because you fucked your cousin too many times. Then the lawyer's your best fucking friend. BTW, good lawyers tell their clients exactly what that article said, "You're gonna pay me a ton of money to fight this thing, you should just settle for less now." But sometimes we can scream at our clients till we're [MGO]blue in the face, but the clients are the pigheaded morons who want to fight on principle. Add to the fact that here, WVU is paying the lawyers out of the public trough, and they have even less incentive to listen to their lawyers. FUCK YOU WEST TEXAS PIECE OF SHIT. GO SHOVE AN ARMADILLO UP YOUR ASS AND SHUT THE FUCK UP.

malletastrophe:
I feel like I've posted this 7 bazillion times:
RR has run dramatically different pass/run splits throughout his career. While OC at Tulane, he had Shaun King throw for 3500+ yards, and run for 800.
As OC at Clemson, he had Woody Dantzler become the first college qb to throw for 2000+ and run for 1000+.
At WVU, Rashard Marshall (QB before White) consistently threw for over 2000 yards. Chris Henry had a 1000 yard season as a receiver.
Pat white, however, cannot throw. So RR doesn't make him throw lots. He can run really well, though. So he runs.

In fact, the single common thread running through all of RR's offenses is that he does like a QB who is at least a threat to run. Whether that is King's 800 yards of largely scrambling, or White's 1700 yards of called run plays, he does like a QB who is capable of picking up yardage. Maybe Threet isn't that guy - but do we know that he can't be a scrambler in the way guys like Boeckman, Krenzel, or Donovan (from Wisconsin) were?

Agreed abt RR's ability to adjust -- worth remembering once people start bitching about RRod if we don't score on our first possession vs Utah.
It's just odd to watch one of those games and NOT see "off tackle left."
But those dudes ran and ran and ran.
'Twas inspiring to think what Minor and Brown (plus Shaw and McGuff) can do in that offense...

One thing to not, and maybe one of the few valid pooints brought up by our friends at O Zone, is that instances in which RR threw prolifically, he did so while serving under other coaches. His personal preference is obviously to run the ball. Is that a bad thing? No. Will that- perhaps - change? One would think. He's got tools he's never had before.

In rebuttal to the O-Zone guy, the notion that the HCs for Tulane and Clemson did anything other than allow their OC to give them the most potent and productive offense possible given the tools at his disposal is kind of silly, no?

I'd agree with the assertion that Rodriguez seemingly likes to run. Fine. But, he's not an idiot - he's not going to make Steve Threet be Pat White. And since he clearly is capable of calling a passing offense, I'm sure he will when neccesary.
The one issue that no one brings up, though, is that RR isn't the Offensive Coordinator - Calvin Macgee is. Again, though, I think the same stuff applies - he's not an idiot, and won;t have Threet running QB sweeps.

Avery Island was far different, and more influenced by his use of drugs. Gardenhead/Leave Me Alone was a gem on that album though. I also have a live disc (Live at ) that's incredibly annoying, so its great that you're finding other material to listen to that is, hopefully, less annoying.

Totally off the football topic, but more on the Jeff Mangum topic:
About a month ago, someone at Slate wrote a piece about the hermit-ness of Mangum's life. How he recorded two albums, then vanished, and now occassionally shows up unannounced at friends concerts and plays a song, or plays at coffee-houses under pseudonyms. And they made the comment that he's desperately "trying to find a way for music to save him".
Isn't that sort of romanticized way of looking at an artist sort of stupid on our part and bad for them? Jeff Mangum is, undoubtedly, actually crazy. The guy wrote an album about being haunted by the ghost of Anne Frank. Not metaphorically haunted. Actually haunted. When someone says that, shouldn't their friends/family not write it off to being an eccentric artist, and actually worry about the persons actual health?

That's a big question Chitown. Do you worry about his health? Of course. My best friend came home one day to find his girlfriend in bed, dead. Without moving or changing domiciles he effectively disappeared for a year and the way I can describe it is that he grew really *quiet*. I haven't the faintest idea what he did during that time. In fact, nobody knows. What I do know is that I'd show up at his work once a week and make certain he was still functioning. As adults, that's all you can do and is also the minimum expectation before you can interfere.
Jeff Magnum clearly still functions. He can play music and feed himself and I assume is not a threat to others. So you just leave him and his shadow, Anne Frank, alone and worry for the best for him.
Plus, I like to use my musical artists for selfish benefit. I still intend to travel to England and get Richard Ashcroft hooked on heroin again. Its the only time he made good music.

Yeah Dex, I agree about which is better for the universe, but there comes a point when people aren't able to help themselves. Now if the dude is just crazy and doesn't pose a threat to himself, let him have his Hobbes. If Calvin starts doing heroin on an Amy Winehouse level and decides to sell Hobbes as a sex slave to fund his next jaunt, it's time to step in.

It's also easy to imagine how sarcasm might be selected over time as evolutionarily crucial. Imagine two ancient humans running across the savannah with a hungry lion in pursuit. One guy says to the other, "Are we having fun yet?" and the other just looks blank and stops to figure out what in the world his pal meant by that remark. End of friendship, end of one guy's contribution to the future of the human gene pool.
....

Baseball Prospectus has a term for players like Deer (or Adam Dunn, or Ryan Howard) - the Three True Outcomes Superstars.
They actually keep track of a "three true outcomes" stat - the percentage of their plate appearances than end with either a walk, a strikeout, or a homer. Something like 70% of Deer's PA's finished with one of those. The pitcher could almost send the defense back to the dugout.

I also went to the Lloyd Carr event in DC last night. (Saw Mangino there, man can eat a lot of brownies). Carr was his dignified, athoritative self, and very comfortable at the lectern. All the reasons we love and hate him were in evidence. He talked lovingly and extemporaneously about the former players that showed up: Max Pollack, looks like a lawyer, good thing Crable didn't get injured; Adam Kraus, now with the Ravens; and a few others. He evinced a deep love for the school, the program, and talked about the importance of doing things with integrity, even when it gets hard to compete with teams that have, "three or four guys getting paid."
He also said, in reference to recruiting, but unfortunately it could have been in reference to his offenses, "Michigan does things the right way, which is to say the old way, the way things have always been done."

Presently watching WVU vs Cinn on ESPN U.
There's no way our offense can look like this. White is carrying the ball A LOT (25 carries in the 4th q) and I can't see us doing this:
* depth chart is unclear
* Threet does not have 4.3 speed
* RR does not want to signal "every time Feagin is in its a QB keep"
When he has thrown (19 att) its been shorter stuff -- the run sets up the pass.

During his DC speech last night, Carr bragged about finding a diamond in the rough with Dhani Jones who was 190 pounds coming out of High School. Dhani's mom Nancy, in the front row of the audience, interrupted and offered to tell "the rest of the story." But Carr said "NO! Moving right along..."
I spoke to Nancy after the speech. She was super cool, and it's very obvious where Dhani gets his personality. She said Dhani was not recruited by Michigan, but applied and was admitted on his own. She went with him to visit Ann Arbor, and they met with Lloyd. Dhani says to Lloyd "I have always wanted to go to Michigan. I'd rather sit on the bench in a winged helmet than start anywhere else." Lloyd replies, "Sorry son, we don't have any scholarships left for linebackers, but you are welcome to try and walk on." Nancy replies, "I'm not paying 30 grand a year so Michigan can make 30 million off of my son. If he doesn't get a scholarship, he'll go to Washington, and see you in the Rose Bowl, sacking your quarterback." Nancy said three days later Lloyd came out to DC and offered Dhani. Then she said to me, "You might remember, he got a sack in the '98 Rose Bowl." I told her I was there and remember it well.
I asked what Dhani was up to and Anne said, "worrying his mom." He's in Thailand right now kickboxing for his show Dhani Tackles the World. He reports to the Bengals at the end of the month, has a bowtie company and a company that markets a "high end sake, gree tea, pomegranate beverage." And he still plays the piano. Nancy is a proud mom.
