WVU fans who think RichRod built the program are simply not correct. Don Nehlen was winning consistently when he retired. Rod had a 3-8 year when he started, then started winning consistently. He's had three very successful seasons the last three years, which may be better than Nehlen did (don't know, although he was in the hunt for at least two national championships in his tenure). But Nehlen, a Bo disciple, is the one who built that program up from nothing.

Why is it so inconceivable to some people that even though you're in a seemingly good situation (stud QB, alum), the grass may be greener somewhere else?
Have you never had a buddy who has a seemingly great job who ended up leaving it for something you thought was a step down? There are so many things that factor in a decision like this:
1) Situation - ok, Florida is a better football school right now (better returning players, louder fans, better recruiting base), but West Virginia is certainly not.
2) Personal relationships - players and assistant coaches are of course important, but a HC's boss is first his AD/administration and second his boosters (anyone watch Friday Night Lights? - you think the college equivalents of Buddy Garrity don't get on a coach's tits?).
3) Surroundings - some people curse the Michigan climate, but not everyone loves the humid Florida summers.
I'm not saying Meyer is coming, but I think it's ignorant to assume he would never leave Florida just because it's a great football school with a stud QB.

Urban Meyer b/c his initials are "UM", he recruits well and puts innovative schemes on the field, he obviously has an appreciation for Michigan b/c of the buyout in his previous contract and most importantly - he dominated Tressel in their only head-to-head match-up.
Both win championships.
We should make a run at both of them. The fact we haven't is disgraceful. As long as we make a run at them and they reject us, then I'm fine with whoever we hire b/c at least we tried to get the two best guys that we had a shot at. ThWard - thanks for trying to cut-off the BM bashing before it can re-start. You're right, this RR push shows that much more is going on behind the scenes than we could have imagined.
FWIW, I've been trying to argue that we shouldn't be so harsh on BM yet ... now I'd take this chance to say that this RR push also doesn't necessarily vindicate BM. Who knows ... maybe MSC is more involved than we think and she's now running the show? I doubt it, my GUESS is that BM really is a crafty and highly intelligent guy, and he's just doing the best he can at managing multiple competing demands that are squeezing him from all sides.
I'm still not sold on RR myself and I won't be all that disappointed if this falls apart. No doubt RR's better than many of the names we've been fearing, but I've still got some big worries about RR, and he's still not my first, or second choice. So I'm still holding out hope and still a member of the MtMM.

The "penalty" provisions, as you put it, are there becasue the school is afraid that the coach will leave for those places in particular and is trying to create a disincentive to do so.
They're actually termed liquidated damages because (i) a penalty clause is generally unenforceable and (ii) it would be very hard to prove actual damages if the coach broke the contract to go elsewhere.
BTW, Miles' contract with LSU has only one "penalty" clause, for UM; are you saying that's meaningless, too?

Exactly. I got down on BM because I thought the process was so bad, that I lost faith any good result could come out of it. Turns out I'm wrong (and that's good).
As Brian says, results-based evaluation here. We end up with a good coach, I'm thrilled. We don't, I'm pissed. I'm not "embarrassed" by anything in between, because, hell, these coaching searches can be tricky.
Just think-- 5 points in the WVU-Pitt game, in all likelihood, altered the chance that LM would be coaching (because I truly believe the MNC is the biggest obstacle, not the conspiracies people throw out there) and increased the chance that RR would. Timing is tricky, but who cares... I think we'll get a good coach.
RR coming at 4pm. Get ready to send WVU another consolidation card.

Urban's clause in his old contract wasn't a penalty. The clause was that he could leave for M, ND, or OSU without penalty. If any one of those three schools came after him, he would walk problem-free.

The Ohio State athletic department issued a statement Thursday with regard to a controversial high school prospect at Wheaton (Md.). High School in the Washington, D.C., suburbs: "Ohio State University does not bring in for an official visit or sign any recruit who either has a pending felony charge or who has been convicted of a felony."
The school would not attach the names of either athletics director Gene Smith or coach Jim Tressel.
Pat Lazear, a highly touted running back/linebacker, faces a Nov. 29 trial on armed robbery charges.
He was quoted last week in The Washington Post as saying he is still receiving text messages from coaches at Ohio State and Alabama and that he plans a recruiting trip to Ohio State in October, though he needed special permission from a judge to travel.
He is wearing a monitoring device. The Post said he likely will choose between OSU and Alabama.

There truly is a bit of a replacing-the-pope thing to this search. All we can go on right now for personal evaluations are how these people (BM, MSC esp.) have performed in the past, and for the most part they've always excelled. No guarantee that's happening now, of course, but still, that's the track record.

If this search has convinced us of anything, it's that no "insider" has any idea what Bill Martin is doing. By and large, I think premium sites are a pretty mixed bag, and a lot varies from writer to writer. But, if nothing else, they are based on their sources knowing something.
And it's more and more apparent with each passing day that no one knows shit.

At $4MM (3.6 times RR's annual salary), it's very likely an unenforceable penalty (cf. the Miles clause which is less than 1 year's salary).
That's why Beilein's buyout got magically reduced. Also, Beilein paying the buyout "out of his own pocket" is a fig leaf. UM bumped his annual salary by the annual payment to the WVU Foundation, which as a charitable foundation entitles Beilein to a charitable deduction so there's no add'l income tax liability to Beilein.
Expect the same thing to happen with RR.
Kudos to UM's Law Dept. (or their outside counsel) for figuring this out.

It's not UM's fault if a currently-employed BCS HC wants or feels obligated to stay where he's at. All you can do is present the opportunity.
Remember, an top-tier BCS HC voluntarily leaving for another BCS HC job is unheard of and would be a first if it happens. Still, it's worth trying for along with other, more likely directions.
