Sure, we're a 2nd rate university with a 3rd rate athletic department (led by an insurance broker with no experience, because why wouldn't they hire him?), in a 4th rate conference, that has never lost to a team in a 5th-rate college football division.. so you clearly are ahead of us in every aspect of the game.
Oregon's not going to win this game, but -- given the legendary arrogance of UofM fans like you -- your team's performance last week, and the collective gas oven the fan base has been sticking its head into since, gives everyone hope. Eventually, with continued performances like this, you'll be forced to trade your hubristic dreamworld in for a big ol' house of humility, similar to that absorbed by University of Washington fans over the last decade or so.
And, no matter what happens today, UofM will still be in Michigan, a.k.a. "The Armpit of America", and Oregon will still be in Oregon, with mountain ranges, wild coastlines, green valleys, open plains, clean air, good water, gas jockeys, medical marijuana, no sales tax, no lake-effect weather, no Michael Moore, no rust belt, no proximity to Ohio, and -- best of all -- a dearth of UofM chest-thumpers.

Marshall defense is falling apart in the second half. But Wake really looks good.
Marshall is coming back. They just got a touchdown to make it 27-23 and now they've stopped WVU on 3 downs. They're about to get the ball on the 50.
All hope is not lost, even if it doesn't look likely that they'll win.
I'm really impressed with Marshall's quarterback. In the first half he'd get a little finicky, but he's calmed down and made some pinpoint throws. They have hope for sure.
Akron has a decent infield and pitching. All they need now is a walk, stolen base, bunt and sac fly.

It's hard to imagine Mallett being anything but bad right now, first game as a true freshman. But that's not a bad alternative right now.
Yeeeeehaw! I'm back, but I would have hoped for better circumstances, but alas -- the problem with the state of Michigan also effects with school as well, they are still stuck on stupid.
I said it last year on this blog -- and thus far I haven't been wrong. I said if they start the season with Lloyd Carr and Chad Henne... were done, Mallett just took the field.
Carr is an entrenched bureaucrat, not a head coach of one of the most feared schools in NCAA history. Henne was his golden biy therefore the obvious choice of who not to go to -- this season starter is going to hurt Big Blue's recruiting efforts long into the future. This friggin game is so hard to watch -- but maybe this will dislodge Carr's head out from the AD's ass. He needed to go after the third time we lost to Ohio St. when he first came on. I love my team... but it's time for tough love!

You can try to justify this game as much as you want, Lloyd, but this isn't just a loss. This is an embarrassment unlike any this program has ever suffered. Two losses, at home, to start the season. One to a Div. I-AA team, one by 32 points to a team that is supposed to be a mid-tier PAC-10 team.
It's time to stop blaming the spread offense. It's time to stop blaming a failure to execute. It's time to stop telling us how great the other team played.
We don't expect Michigan football to be perfect. No team can ever be perfect. But we expect you to prepare for a game and to play as hard as you can. You can't pretend that's what happened today, Lloyd. Don't delude yourself.

I think it is safe to say we can seriously start to speculate who the next head coach will be. It only makes sense for Llyod to step down once this group of seniors leave. We had 300+ yards of offense in the first half today, and Notre Dame plays the type of traditional run/pass game that our defense is designed to stuff ... and they have no offensive touchdowns in two games! If Henne were healthy, we'd still beat ND next week handily.
...but he's not healthy, and our true freshman QB will struggle.

Firing Carr right now won't amount to anything good. You need stability until the new coaching regime comes in. The last thing you want is coaches from other programs calling committed recruits to get them somewhere else and current players transferring out of panic. Carr has been a good recruiter, and no doubt he'll keep pushing Michigan to recruits, wether they have committed or not. He's a Michigan man and a classy man, so I don't see him doing otherwise.
As for coaching choices. My dream choice would be Bob Stoops, but it's not happening (why would he leave OU?). Tedford would be a good choice as well, probably much more realistic.
I don't want Rich Rodriguez. Too many bad apples in his program the past few years. And I don't see him leaving anytime soon, he's a WVU alumn.
Schiano didn't leave Rutgers for his "dream" job (Florida), don't see him going anywhere.

To you this may seem like "short-term gratification," but I've been vocal about my belief that we needed to ditch Carr and his prehistoric play-not-to-lose approach for a solid five or so years now. But the odd B10 title and occasional OSU victory has given him the freedom to lurch around campus for years past his expiration date.
I was a student in attendance at the '97 RB win. I was a grad during the Texas RB loss. I've watched the team fade from national powerhouse to national embarassment and I think that it's been a long time coming. Further, I think that coddling Carr has contributed tremendously to that.
So yeah, I think drastic times call for drastic measures. But I do have doubts as to what would actually transpire if he were to resign/be fired, since I can't see anyone but Debored/English becoming his interim replacement, and that team of morons has done more to deserve a pink slip than a promotion. Hence my question, above.
Again, don't try to diminish my question by calling it "short-term" and don't insult me by saying I'm "crazed" - if Carr had been out when he should have been, we might never have seen this mess.

the parallels to what happened to University of Kentucky basketball are pretty striking here. tubby and lloyd both won NC's early in their career and then stubbornly stuck with the same formula even though it clearly wasn't working anymore. both came to be reviled by the diehards for the last couple years of their tenure. biggest difference i see is that tubby sucked at recruiting - one thing lloyd isn't guilty of. let's hope we come up with a hire equally as good as UK getting gillespie.

But I am talking about speed on the lines and linebackers, etc. Also....Tressel has proven to guys that he will change his approach according to the talent he has...IE last years spread. Mich has been running the same plays for 10 years, not to mention the prevent defense.

the brian kelly suggestion is intriguing. i went down to the UC/OSU game thursday night and he definitely has brought some excitement to the program. as a UC grad i can assure you the UC football program has always been an afterthought in this football-crazed city and kelly is starting to change that. he brings an exciting offense (basically a spread - so they'd definitely beat us) and the defense was awesome thursday night. he might be a good guy if we can't get a premier name. he's definitely intense which i think would be good for the program.

Lloyds problem is that his roster is loaded with kids who were overated when they were recruited and will never get better. Just as one example; Brandon Harrison lacks size, speed, athletic ability; the fact that he is starting demonstrates how talent poor this team is.

At least miami went to back to back national title games---getting robbed of course against OSpoo. Actually, we can go much lower than miami. They have a more solid recruiting base, lower academic standards, and have already been through a down cycle years ago and rebounded. I'm not interested in guys like Miles...I want guys like Jeff Tedford, who are truly innovative and have shown they can win against top competition without top notch talent. Brian Kelly is someone I am going to start paying attn to. I was impressed with the results of THU UC game, one they were not picked to win.
Tedford is the big name that I like most, but the knock on him since he has been at Cal is that he couldn't win the big games (except for that USC game and this year's TN game). It will be intersting to see how they turn out this year, bc they have some talent, at least on the Off.

honestly, i think recruiting will be an issue for the next coach...there just isn't the talent base in Michigan for UM to go out and get a coach while saying "UM recruits itself."
OSU could go get a 1aa guy who never recruited a big time player b/c you don't need alot to convince a guy from ohio to go to OSU. plus, tressel did have to recruit ohio, and he knew alot of HS coaches. so he wasn't totally green to recruiting ohio.
again it doesn't take alot to recruit Cali kids to USC, or texas kids to UT or Fla kinds to FSU/UF/theU.
it will take a good recruiter to convince kids from oh,fla,tex,cali, to go to M. tedford, kelley, even miles may not have that kind of recruiting ability. (esp kelley)

I heard someone talking on the radio about the most successful "recruiting plan" and that is a good head coach with a young B/M to recruit. I don't know much about that, but they listed USC and LSU as examples.

Personally I think I realized we had problems when we went 9-3 with a loaded offense in 2000.
Any coaching staff that could field a half decent defense would've run the table that year.
We let NW put up 54 points? Are you f'ing kidding me? I don't care what phenoms they had at QB and RB that year, that should never happen against M.
All the speed in the world wouldn't make up for the 40+ missed tackles. It would have made the game 25-7, instead of 39-7. This is a coaching problem; the defense simply doesn't tackle. The linebackers overrun plays, whiff on easy tackles (watch the statue of liberty play), and are constantly out of position. At least one members of the secondary does something wrong on each play. The offense repeatedly makes mindless mistakes, such as false-start penalties, terrible reads (Henne's interception), and blown blocking on blitzes (never Hart, though). The talent seems like its there, unless all the recruiting services are completely wrong each year. While Carr should be allowed to retire graciously, English should be fired, and Debord should be given one week to make things better.
NW didn't put up 54 vs M in 2000 b/c they had phenoms at qb,tb or anywhere else for that matter.
it was b/c we didn't know how to defend the spread-option offense.
I agree we miss a lot of tackles but this has been going on for awhile. Watching LSU...You don't notice missed tackles cuz someone else is there to clean it up. It's tough to tackle a guy 1 on 1 in the open. But if you have team speed you can swarm areas and leave less open field for playmakers. That way you dont have to make tackles on an island all alone.

There are so many disastrous games that forshadowed this season and depressed me for weeks on end.....and some of them we won, but you still new disaster was waiting.
That Northwestern game is one.
Remember the Mich St. game with Braylon Edawards that we won.
The Purdue game against Brees. The other Oregon game. The Washington games. The game at Minnesota with the miracle comeback. The Minnesota game. The Syracuse/McNabb game. And so many more.
With the 2nd humiliating loss in as many weeks, there is nothing else to do except speculate on Lloyd's replacement. I've been banging the Brian Kelly drum since last year. Hopefully, Bill Martin will channel the ghost of Don Canham and take a chance.

David Harris wasn't that fast (comparatively), but he was an excellent middle linebacker. He tackled properly. Harris, Woodley, Hall, and Branch clearly covered a lot of coaching gaffes last year.

Dudes - almost every team loses games each year. They don't forshadow anything. Each team is different. THis years team is struggling in every aspect. It can be seen on the players faces, the coaches faces, and the fans. Granted the spread Off is kicking our tails right now, but we will get a break from it for a few weeks. Hopefully, better things will happen against ND and PSU. IF NOT, we will probably have another "year of infinite pain".
Just remember that the enemy has a say in the outcome of these games, and today's enemy was THIS TEAMS worst nightmare...
Not that 40 yard dashes are the definitive measure of speed, but David Harris ran a 4.66 40 yard dash before the draft. Patrick Willis ran a 4.37, and a 4.48. Tim Shaw from Penn State ran a 4.41, and a 4.48. I'd assert that Harris was a better linebacker than either Shaw or Willis.

1. Was Henne not injured, but just benched? He seems to have regressed to wild swings in quality not seen since TYOIP.

We get to enjoy something of a respectable season and the coaching staff is guaranteed to either get kicked to the curb or figure out the spread option.
5. Do you really believe there is no speed on that team? Their problem is more likely that they just don't know what they are doing, no?
I am so sick and tired of hearing the team speed thing, if you take our dbs and get a collective average 40 yd, it would be comparable to any team in the NCAA. Speed is not the issue. It is up to the coaches to think and the players to act. Our players have to spend too much time thinking on the field because the coaching is so lacking in preparation.

1. The prevent defense and inability to stop the spread offense.

2. Only throwing downfield when it is necessary and you are down or it is 3rd and long. See Mich St.-Braylon Edwards game, Minnesota 2003 game
3. Getting overly conservative with late game leads and blowing it. See Appalachian State---Not going for the kill after the interception, Texas Rose Bowl, OSU 2005.

I totally agree that we have speed at skill positions that isnt being used properly by the coaches. However, we dont have the speed we need on the d-line/linebackers. The combination of these two issues makes us look exponentially slower. With one or the other, it was never this bad. Now, we have neither, so it just looks terrible.

Whoever comes in to coach next year will have a nice young QB in mallet, great speed at back in Mcguffie---assuming he stays with us, and two great corner prospects in Warren and Cissoko. The O line should be ok with schilling. but the d-line is a disaster. How about recievers? are we in trouble there?
Whomever Michigan hires next, should be a defensive guy...someone who can recruit to the defensive side of the ball. Offensive recruiting is easy..everyone wants to play there...we need defense.

yes i know if we play USC we lose to them in a bowl game but in the Pac 10 tedford must play the trojans every year whereas if he were at UM its less thank likely he will have to play the trojans unless he has to play them in the rose bowl in which case we will lose and lose with pride.
I think the future is very bright at wide out, Stonum coming next year is a world class speedster (I believe I read he recorded the fasted scout combine 40 ever), and we have a trio of frosh speedsters this year.

LLLLLLoyd's decade old gameplan against the spread is simple. Let the opponent run up points quickly so they quit running the spread and work on the clock. Thats why we are so good at slowing the spread offenses in the second half every week. Get over the "weather" argument. Players don't choose a place because of the weather, they choose a place that gets them an NFL contract. This involves:
1) a big name school
2) a winning program
3) a program where they can start immediately and make a difference
I would argue that after this year we still have 1 and 3 covered. In fact 3 is covered even more so than last year because the current starters are not solid. How do you think we got Mallet? He wasn't going to be the Texas starter so he came here.
Half the current starters are seniors on both sides of the ball too. Maybe a new coach can save the underclassmen from expecting to fail..... If I was a 5* defensive prospect in any position I would come to Michigan in a hot minute, we could start 6-7 freshman on defense next year
As far as the weather goes, that 5* S/WR/Ath from I think South Carolina listed weather as his most important factor in whether he will choose Florida/Florida State/Michigan...I think we are hosed there :)

weather may be a factor if all else is equal, but when is the last time you heard a recruit say "I'm going to school xxxxx because it will give me the best shot at getting a fat NFL contract". No one says it, but it is the biggest motivation.
I guess giving up 624 yards to a spread offense containing a mobile quarterback isn't that surprising. However, the offensive mistakes seem out of character. Its hard to believe that this team has some players who were involved in that amazing Rose Bowl game against Texas. Why does our offense make so many mental mistakes now?
Question - do coaches ever leave / get fired midseason in college football? what are examples of this? aren't we more or less stuck with carr through his 6-5 (hopefully) stewardship of this team? also, what happens to the recruiting program during a transition? who calls on the HS seniors when the program is a mess? i'm all for sacking carr, but man, doing it abruptly could be a real problem.

A couple of observations from a guy who could really care less about your university...
1. Tetuna is the best suggestion listed here thus far.
2. A more likely candidate is someone like Gus Malzahn at Tulsa or June Jones at Hawaii
3. Charlie Weis has proven you can recruit out of the South and California to a cold weather team. His rationale makes sense...if you want to play in the NFL, your going to end up playing in cold weather.
4. THE WORST POSSIBLE THING THAT COULD HAPPEN TO YOUR PROGRAM WOULD BE FOR YOUR HEAD COACH TO RESIGN 3 WEEKS INTO THE SEASON. I'm sure that would make it really easy to actually sign your committed recruits and hire a quality coach.

I wish I could see some true Michigan fans out there; I don’t think that there are many faithful fans out there. To boo your own team off the field at a home game is ridiculous. To want your own head coach’s job is wrong; Lloyd Carr is a hell of a coach. Lloyd Carr is a great man and a winning coach in a winning program. I can’t believe that I can surf the web and see that there are petitions out there to get Coach Carr fired immediately. I think that someone should start a petition about keeping him there; changing the coach even after this year is up is a bad decision. Don’t hate a man who is human and makes bad decisions every once in a while just like the rest of the world.

With all due respect, don't come in here and tell us how to lose (or how to win, for that matter). I don't think you'll find a single post in here that denigrates Oregon. Your guys played a fantastic game, represented your conference well, and more than deserved to win.
What you don't seem to know, however, is that Michigan has been coasting on tradition, and almost nothing else, for years now. We've been doing that for so long that we're way, way behind the times and are now in desperate need of change.
That's what people want now -- change. And answers. And no matter how much you want to blame the players, when you see the same mistakes year after year, by different guys, you have to start blaming the coaches.
I don't hate the players and I don't hate my school. But tell me again why I'm not entitled to want them to make changes?
Sitting in the student section today, I realize that supposedly the most spirited section used THEIR priceless, drunkass energy into booing our team. Those petitions have been there for years. Explain to me how thinking that a guy - who has himself said that "maybe the game has passed me by" - should go is equivalent to "hating" him?

Annon, that was dumb he drops passes like crazy. All he does is occasionally catch a deep bomb in garbage time when the Browns are getting there ass kicked. If he does that every game, fantasy wise I guess he might be worth it.
Man I have seen traditional powers falter such as Alabama two or three times, Auburn, Florida, FSU now currently, Clemson, LSU, USC, Oklahoma, Ohio State twice, Nebraska, Texas, Texas A&M, Georgia, Washington, West Virginia, Penn State(lost to Toledo remember). All of them hit rock bottom, but redeem themselves a few years later.
Yes they're 1-5 vs. OSU and lost five bowl games but they were still better than at least 100 of 119 teams in the country generally. That previous bad stuff pales in comparison till what they’ve done now.
Michigan never hit rock bottom till now and I had previously never thought they would. They almost lost to Utah(pre-Urban Meyer) and San Diego State in the past, but still won. Even in the past when they looked awful vs. MAC and C-USA teams they still blew them out or won going away.
They lost to a crappy Oregon team in 2003 and still came back to beat OSU and go to the Rose Bowl. 1998 they started 0-2 and won their next 9 of 10 games. 2005 they at least beat Penn State who was previously undefeated.
Now they just suck and Hart can't guarantee them doing anything special or beating anyone other than maybe EMU. I hope they lose games on purpose like MSU has the past few years so they don't have to play in the Motor City Bowl.
The Big Ten signing a contract to be in that bowl is dumber than them starting their own cable station that has 45, maybe 46 guaranteed subscribers.

Despite popular opinion, rooting for the team with the third best record in the past 10 years is not rooting for a program that is cursed, regardless of the what have you done for me lately mentality. There are truly cursed programs and some of them aren't too far away from us to remind us. (East Lansing, Urbana Champaign, Bloomington, Ford Field).
Some of you are acting like there are more downs than ups with this program. Ummmm, no. Try being a Lions fan. A Michigan State fan. For that matter, a Nebraska fan, a Colorado fan, or a Virginia fan. These programs have actually hit rock bottom, they became irrelevant. 3 out of 4 BCS series is not irrelevant. Losing two games doesn't amke you irrelavent We are just coming down from a higher peak than most did. We lost two games and have the talent to put together a winning season. Rock bottom is a long way down.
College football is like running a company that has systematic turnover every 4 years. There will inevitably be points where the talent drops, no matter how many stars you put next to a recruits name, there are no guarantees. The real amazement is that we could sustain a high level of play on both sides of the ball for so long. People act like USC, LSU, Texas and Oklahoma were a steady recruiting machine for years on end. There was Miami, Alabama, and Florida State before them. All have had major multiseason dips. Michigan has been one of the few constants on the national landscape and we should be proud.
The silver lining? Hopefully, this at least teaches some people a lesson about the folly of whining that our team didn't win the Rose Bowl or another BCS series game. Do you know how stupid you sound in retrospect that the world is falling when you are still one of the top 10 programs in the country. We just had very good rivals.
I still love every bit of this team. Even when I am hating it, if that makes any sense. The ups, the downs. It all comes with it. What can you do, but stick with them? Apparently, you can write incoherent messages on a board, but real fans of teams that don't win every year understand that this is part of the cycle. Instead we have the Yankees fan base, and it sickens me.
Henne was bad again today. Ugh!! I think he single-handedly stalled every drive in the first half except for the Brown fumble.
He's our "senior star QB." I expect him to make great throws and great decisions. He was missing receivers and not going through his progressions to his 2nd and 3rd reads. It looks like his doesn't have very good field awareness and/or peripheral vision. And man, he is SLOW!
Having said that, the WRs need to do a much better job of "sitting down" in the zone coverage gaps. They need to use their heads and help out their QB a little more, instead of robotically running themselves into coverage when Henne needs to find an open receiver!
Hart needs to play as much as he can physically handle next week.
Defensively, I did my own crude "UFR" of the first half. From what I can tell, the defensive futility was mostly on the PLAYERS: over-pursuing, giving up contain, running themselves out of plays, LBs getting to gaps WAY too late, an inability to get any consistent push upfield by our DL, and just REALLY REALLY shitty tackling to go along with all of the above.
Oh yeah, they also got flat burnt on deep coverage. Our DBs look "Notre Dame level" slow.
Last week, I mostly blamed English, because we had such a profound talent advantage. This week, what I saw was players not executing, soft tackling, and general stupidity.
The one thing I didn't see, which I will blame English for, was the lack of a spy on Dixon at all times. He killed us on some big scrambles that perhaps a spy would've prevented.
I wonder how the failure of our offense impacted the morale of our defense? I've gotta think that if we were in s shoot-out the defense would've continued to fight and claw harder than what I saw towards the end of the first half. You could see that they were demoralized and started play deflated.
Last point: I think our new head should be a defensive speacialist, such as a perrenially effective Defensive Coordinator from the NFL.

The real goal is to have a “tradition of excellence” not an “excellence of tradition”.
When Bo arrived in’69, he replaced Bump Elliott who had the tradition (he starred on the 1948 NC team) but lacked the excellence. Bo brought innovation for that era (e.g., he invented the helmet sticker), with great emphasis on conditioning, defense and toughness.
The Mich teams in Bo’s first decade were not the most talented but he got the most out of his players: they played hard all the time and were fun to watch and root for. Unfortunately, they also had the misfortune to play (and usually lose to) the best team in the country in their last game each year, i.e., OSU, USC and Okla.
With the arrival of Anthony Carter in 1979, the offense opened up and UM became a national recruiting powerhouse. Over time, success became more and more talent-based as Bo’s 1970s innovations ossified into conservatism.
For the most part, the post-Bo era has been disappointing as the teams (other than ’97) seemingly failed to live up to their potential. This was not because Moeller and Carr were “good” recruiters and “bad” coaches but because neither of them had proved their ability to be successful head coaches before taking over. Thus, they had not been personally responsible for creating their own “tradition of excellence” elsewhere and could not invigorate and update the Michigan tradition as head coaches. However, the talent and the surviving remnants of the Bo tradition resulted in more than enough wins to mask the true situation.
In fact, it appears that Bo’s passing marked the true end of the Schembechler era much more than his retirement as head coach. The man had an incredible spirit which infused Mich football for the last four decades and now it’s gone. We can see the results as the still-talented Wolverines look lost and demoralized.
Even as the most successful all-time college football program in both wins and winning percentage, the Michigan program has been through down periods before. The next UM head coach needs to be someone who has been a successful head coach elsewhere, preferably one who has turned around a program. Thus, will the tradition of Wolverine football be reinvigorated and create a new era of excellence.
And you moops think you deserved a title shot last year? Yikes.

Many of you cannot understand the sentiments of the Michigan fan base.
Do all of you realize that OUR team hasn't had a SINGLE losing record in 40 years? Not a one. Think about that.
We DO realize how great and precious and unique that is. Yes, unique. EVERY other college football program in the country can't come close to matching that 40-year streak.
Michigan's last losing record was in 1967!
So... are we spolied? Or are we just kinda freaking out because something we've treasured for so long, the one thing that separated OUR SCHOOL from every other "flavor of the decade" (FSU, USC, Miami, Va Tech, etc.) is in jeopady of being lost.
Most of us cannot remember (or were even born!) when our team wasn't special in this way. We are MICHIGAN. Our team NEVER gets blown out by 30+ points, and it NEVER has a losing season.
Forgive us if we wail and gnash our teeth at the grave possibility that all of this is ending this year.
Because our boys really really suck this year, and we're knowledgeable enough to know this that horrendous team could be the ones to break our STREAK.

With that said, I just had to share that last Sunday, the preacher at my church made the UM loss to App. St. a part of the sermon. I'm interested to hear what he has to say this week.
I don't think asking for a change or demanding excellence from the program is a sign of not being a fan, etc. People who say otherwise are just trying to make themselves feel better.

Speaking as a fan of another team, all I can say is that there are plenty of fans from other teams (teams whose past accomplishments even surpass that of mighty Michigan's) who can empathize with what you're going through now...and this, too, shall pass.

people have mentioned, and not totally unreasonably, why fire carr now, its week three, wont that make the rest of the season a disaster? wont it kill recruiting?
the problem is that carr has stopped adjusting. we had all summer to figure out 2 teams with not the same, but very similar, offenses. app st's play book wasnt exatly huge. i (and i'm assuming many many others) were calling their plays in the 2nd half. we didn't adjust -thats coaching. we tackle horribly. coaching. pursuit angles are bad. coaching. with the head job must come culpability. in the past i have supported carr, but this is too much. i agree that there are problems with promoting an assistant, most notably ?which one? because it's not like any one is super distinguised right now. but youve got to pull the trigger to put the ship right. or rightER anyway.
as to recruiting, i think a losing season is worse than losing your coach. if your team is going down the toilet, it just doesnt make sense to hold on to whats not working in the name of recruiting. if you do better, recruiting will follow, if you stay with the sinking ship, recruiting sinks too.
we really are in danger of a losing season. we have 2 very though, very loseable games ahead that we need to win.
as to the ducky fans blasting us for "giving up", being whiners, etc, you'd whine too if the best program in football history was having its worst year ever. that doesnt mean we dont support them. booing in the stadium (though i was not among them) has a place to show dissatisfaction. we'll cheer every play next week when they play notre dame, and probably (and this will make me so angry) lose. and after that i'll cheer them every play against penn st. but what do you expect us to do- just sit there quietly and applaud a very bad effort? no, the players need a wake-up. there is a place for that. just listen next week, fans will cheer like crazy when they take the field against ND. and if they show no heart again, they'll be booed and deserve it. they had a horrible effort last week and deserved some noise. spare me the oh, the poor scholarship athletes nonsense. they dont try hard, they get booed, then hopefully they remember to play better, thats the deal.

Alot of talk about the Big Ten being slow based on Oregon's big pass plays Saturday. According to the people that rank recruiting classes Michigan Wr's and DB's are as fast as anyone.
I blame those big pass plays on bad defensive scheming, miscommunications, bad coaching, lack of experience, maybe even overrated talent(we'll see in the long run). Michigan DB's were one on one with tons of wide open space for the Duck receivers. No safety help at all.
You never want any receiver with that much open space. I saw the Detroit Lions practice a few years ago doing one on one WR/DB drills and David Kircus was constantly burning Pro Bowler Dre' Bly because he had tons of open space to run.
Team speeds mean the old Florida State, Florida, Miami philosophy, which made them dominate in the 80's and 90's of moving safeties to linebacker, fullbacks and linebackers to defensive line, tailbacks to fullbacks and H-Backs. Every team does that now, has been for years, even high schools.
I am willing to bet Michigan has more DB's currently in the NFL then Oregon. The only Oregon guys I can think off the top of my head in the NFL are Joey Harrington, Reuben Droughns, Igor Olshansky and Haloti Nagota, Maurice Morris.

I didn't realize we had Huskers visiting our wake! Yes, I work with a guy who is a Nebraska alum, and NU fans are a part of a very select group of people who actually can empathize with our current situation.
So I should have omitted the word "ALL." My apologies.
Actually, I'll even agree with you that Nebraska's fall was even greater than ours. Your team had more National Titles, more great seasons, and besides that your fans are much more passionate than ours, and are the envy of the college football world. And I'm NOT being sarcastic. (Did everyone SEE all that damn red in the Wake Forest stadium? Wow.)
Having said all that, we'd have beaten Frosty Big Mouth and his boys back in 1997.
