anyone see the pope outside the stadium before and after the game? that was me and my friend...and we are in the daily today, i found that amusing

Gravatar Why is it mandatory to use the adjective "storied" with any mention of Notre Dame's past?

And I wonder what sort of "stories" people will be telling about the Super Genius years after he is run out of South Bend on a rail.

Please, sir, may I have another helping of schadenfreude?

Gravatar Please keep Weis! He is a brilliant offensive mind!

Gravatar I love how Nessler tries to pimp the BC-Georgia Tech game on ESPN later that night as a "big ACC matchup" and the only thing Griese can say is "uhh".

I love watching that play where Mallett rolls right and hits Manningham near the goal line. We haven't had that spirit here since 1969.

Gravatar From my angle (section 19), I thought that Mallett's throw to Manningham near the goal line was too far back across his body, floated a little, and was nearly picked. I thought of the old addage "never throw late across the middle". When I finally watched the game, it looked a little different, not as bad as I thought, it wasn't as close to being picked as I thought, but still floated some and reminded me a little too much of Henne's atrocious throw back across his body against App St.

Maybe Mallett can make that throw better than Henne, I just didn't think it was a safe play till I watched it on tape.

Gravatar ...and I loved the whole "Mallett misses the pile!" scene

Gravatar I can tell you one thing -- I'm glad I'm not a Hawkeye. They are devastated right now. They're calling for Ferentz's head here in the Hawkeye State.

For some reason, the pummelling of Our Lady really took the sting out of the App St/Oregon debacles. Watching that highlight clip gives me hope, as unwarranted as it may be, for the rest of the season. I like Mallett's panache. And since when was what's-his-name called the "Machete?"

/Zoltan for President
//RIP Shakey Jake -- you were a beacon of hope during a lot of grey Ann Arbor days. Thank you for who you were.

Gravatar Notre Dame's history is quite storied. Unfortunately, the stories are old enough to be in multiple paperback reprints.

Notre Dame hasn't had a hardcover since Tony Rice and the epic games against Colorado.

On BC-GT: Matt Ryan looked a lot better than Jimmah in that ballgame. Ryan should be a Heisman candidate, but the media has already awarded it to Brian Brohm (or one of the WVU guys in case Louisville tanks - oh wait...)

Gravatar It's definitely gotta be Slaton or White from WVU in the front for the Heisman. And the QB's from Texas Tech and Hawaii as well. Then Hart.

Gravatar Colt Brennan should be nowhere near the Heisman discussion.

Character issues nonwithstanding, he plays two 1-AA teams and in the WAC. Any Heisman discussion should end there.

Gravatar Don't forget Ray Rice over at New Jersey State U...I mean Rutgers. I'm extremely surprised that the humanoids in the media haven't pushed him harder given the school's proximity to the NYC and Bristol, CT media markets.

Gravatar Or I may not have picked up on sarcasm...I'm not totally sure.

Gravatar Boston Nick -- no sarcasm on my part. I just think the huge numbers mean a lot (both TT and Haw qb's). But I think it's Slaton/White's to lose.

Gravatar At least it's not Joy Division lyrics.

Gravatar I love White and Slaton, and if both can keep playing well against all the teams on their schedule, I'd have no issues with one of those guys getting it.

But McFadden definitely still needs to be on that list. He's unreal.

And we'll see how the SEC actually shakes out, but Tebow looks legit as hell right now too. If he shows well against LSU, look out.

Gravatar Really funny...

Check out Manningham on the Greg Mathews touchdown. He started celebrating a little early, not that it made a difference...

Gravatar \ It's definitely gotta be Slaton or White from WVU in the front for the Heisman.//

I agree with most folks here, either one of those guys more than deserve it...but their problem is that they're going to split the vote.

Gravatar There's no way Michigan stadium should be renovated. and anyone who thinks otherwise is a communist.

oh, and Weis isn't that fat.

oh, oh, and i also would *love* to hear all about NDs calculus 'requirement' again. and how their football players all 'earn' their way into the Bschool. and how getting accepted into ND puts you 95% of the way to a degree.

Gravatar actually, that last part *is* true.

Gravatar The Jones story is huge in turns of Big Ten recruiting. We know what Illinois can do (Martez Wilson). We know what Purdue can do (Kawann Short). It will be interesting to see if Mich can follow suit.

Might be a three-horse race now in Chi.

Gravatar which two of these from the ND quote don't belong?

"...Tedford, Meyer, Carroll, Stoops, Tressel, Amato, Friedgen, Holtz and others..."

Guess that didn't work out so well for Amato or Friedgen after-all.

Gravatar No, Weis *is* that fat. He's not quite as morbidly obese as Fridgen, but still really, really fat.

Gravatar lol I saw Amato and was like uh? What?

Gravatar I'm sad Shakey Jake died.

Gravatar I think it is time to lay off
Sears. I seriously doubt he is
feeling good right now. We don't
know the situation really, and
even if it was a drug related
thing...give the kid a break.

He's certainly not the first
corner Michigan has put out
there that hasn't played well.

I hope he can go somewhere and
succeed. All of this bashing
needs to end, it's over and
he needs to put his life back
together, tough enough without
folks posting Youtubes.

Gravatar With the passing of Shakey Jake, the Ann Arbor street community is alarmingly thin. Now all that's left is GNC "yallgotadollaorsomethin" guy. He isn't even in the same league as Jake. That dude's just depressing.

On the move...

Gravatar Poor Jake. My first encounter with him was on my very first night on campus as a student. He was playing his guitar on the street and we stopped and talked to him. He shook our hands, then scratched his belly and revealed he had a bad rash on it. I'll also never forget seeing him at the Ann Arbor Blues & Jazz festival. He was dancing with all kinds of ladies in the crowd and occasionally spitting. Godspeed, Jake!

Someone check on the "Nice-smelling incense!" dude to make sure he's OK.

Gravatar My favorite moments:

* When we had 10 players for the second time during the field goal. And Mike Hart rushes to the field to be a blocker. The commentators gush and say "Coach.. I can also play defense".

I don't know what we'll do without him next year.

* At some point, you could see Mike Hart demonstrating to Carlos Brown how to hold a football in the sidelines. Brown nods.
In a few plays, when Carlos is there in the field, he promptly fumbles.

* Mario's TD was the exact same double move he did during the long TD against ND last year. This year the victim was Darrin Walls - the next great corner from ND. How much they learn from Corwin Brown, eh?

* Brandon Minor's hit on #27 Bruton. That summed up the game. I'll upload the video of it when I find time. Thank you MGoVideo. You are doing a great service.

Gravatar Wow, interesting news on Demetrius Jones on WXYT 1270am right now. They are saying that the last day to register at Northern Illinois was on 9/12...the Wednesday BEFORE the U of M game. He registered and continued to practise with the team through Friday until his crazy ass trap door job he pulled on Front Butt. Some players on the team even knew that Jones was leaving, no one told Front Butt. WTF? Do his players hate him?

Gravatar Does the bongo guy on Hoover after football games count as part of the street community? I haven't figured him out yet. In any case, he made me smile as I was walking to my car after the App St game, which was not an insignificant accomplishment.

Gravatar Bongo guy counts. He's been there for every game of my four years.

Gravatar Chris: There are a lot of unconfirmed rumors that yes, ND players hate Weis and he has lost the team completely.

Gravatar Chris, Valenti just ripped that whole story off the blog brian linked @ right.

Gravatar Bongo guy goes back to at least the early 90's...however he might not qualify since he's only part of the street community on game days.

However the guy who dances to Michael Jackson tunes by the Michigan Theater should count as part of the street community.

Gravatar fuck you

Gravatar I never ran into Shakey Jakye, but I ate at Hello Faz!Pizza all the time. It was the only place that would deliver to where I used to work just outside the Ann Arbor city limit at 1AM. On his pizza flyer menus Faz he had all these pics with celebrities. Hopefully, the sandwich Nazi that runs Dimo's Deli and the guy who dances all day and night like Michael Jackson in the alley on Liberty across from Borders are in good health.

Gravatar Ha! Dimo's makes me laugh. Years ago, I went in there with a couple other people; since I wasn't hungry, I didn't order a sandwich. When I said I didn't need anything to eat, he looked at me and said, "Are you sure? You need some meat on your bones!"

Gravatar I don't know if I count the Michael Jackson guy. He's too seasonal and usually only shows up during non-school months.

Gravatar I have a nominee for Ann Arbor icon to take over for Shakey Jake. She is not a street person, but neither was Faz so I don't think we are talking just stree folk.

Anyways, I am sure most of you know the woman who works at Blimpy Burger. Her name is Devi (sp?). She has been there forever, and has photos on the wall dating back to the original owner, if I am correct. I remember her busting my chops the first time I set foot in the restaurant back in 1989 because I was a Blimpy Virgin and did not know how to order correctly. Everyone I ever take there hopes she will be there when we go to eat. I have been taking my wife a 3 kids for years now, and she is a great person. She loves my kids and always takes time to talk with them and make sure they get a sucker if they eat all their food.

Brian, you should get in touch with her and make a t-shirt with her face on it. My friend has a Shakey Jake shirt, I am sure Devi's mug would sell on a shirt.

Gravatar In Detroit they printed up shirts for a legendary street person that said Beat'Em Tigers and had his face on there. They made big money for the guy and a ton of people were wearing them last year in the playoffs. Can't remember the guys name.
