Hah, don't take away my points.
I guess what I'm trying to say is this team is starting to win in the manner that they were built: with starting pitching that keeps them in the game so that the offense can produce. We knew going into the season that the 2-1 type of victory wasn't going to happen very often, but 5-4, etc would be realistic. It's nice to see run production when it matters. For instance, they didn't put up a lot of runs today, but those 2 intentional walks in the 10th were huge. Pitchers can't go directly at the Tigers lineup in the same way they were in April and May.

Yes because the GMs in the NL are retarded. They insist on playing the game "the right way" despite clear evidence that they are stupid. I have to find the article from earlier this year that said "Pat Burrell is more of an American League type player". Personally, I had no idea they played baseball differently in the leagues.

All teams are, by definition, built this way. I don't think any team is built with the intention of having the starting pitching allow 7 runs in 3 innings and then the bullpen holds them while the offense puts up at least 8 runs. Despite what Bonderman in the 1st inning, Robertson and Willis have made it look like so far this year.

Daniel, you're missing the point. Of course, no team is built to give up 7 runs in the first three innings. But when we're talkign about sustainable winning- what the Tigers need if the y want to get back into this thing - we're talking about some sort of balance to mitigate the obvious bullpen deficiency. It's good sign because I believe they can maintain this sort of play.

No, I'm not missing the point at all. You're whole argument comes down to, "The Tigers are hitting and pitching better, so they are winning sustainably now." As opposed to when they weren't pitching and hitting well, and were NOT winning sustainably, which was evidenced by being TWELVE games under .500.

Actually, its because players in the National League do shit like this to GMs who want to demote players to the bullpen...

Jesus christ, guy.
Look at the problems they had before: SP shows up, offense doesn't. Or, they're winning by putting up 10, 11, 12, 19 runs. And then putting up 2 the next day and losing. Or, giving up 2 runs one day and 10 the next.
The point, you dick hole, is that they're getting consistent play out of the two factions that were woefully inconsistent in April and May.
The less peaks and valleys, the better I like their shot at getting into the playoffs.

I don't really know much because we haven't done many Tigers games this year, but I know if they get cosistent pitching and cosistency from the hitters they can be a good team. Not a great team because there aren't any great teams anymore, but they can be cosistent. It's wide open this time of year. With Gary Sheffield back, they should be more cosistent over the rest of the season.

Brian, thanks for this post. Excellent analysis.
Alls I knows is that, as devastating as the zone stretch play may have been in 2006 (the year UM ran it to perfection) and parts of 2007, Hart seldom scored a homerun TD jaunt of 10 yards or more. Grinding opponents into dust with a bonecrushing running game is all well and good, but even in 2006 Michigan didn't exactly blow out bulbs on the scoreboard and frequently settled for FGs.
I think UM's PPY stats (points per yard) tell the real story. Michigan football under Debord was not only boring as hell, it was about doing the bare minimum to win and not about winning decisively. This leftUM ill-prepared for facing playing better opponents.
I like the idea of UM turning back the running game to traps, pulls and counter plays as well as option zone. This is still power football, but with some deception and finesse sprinkled in. Maybe we'll see some homerun TDs a la Steve Slaton, Tony Boles and Tyrone Wheatley.

I agree with what the other guy said about the difference with this offense as compared to DeBord. Come one, guys, RR was winning games with a converted safety at QB. Now he'll have, uh, what the hell is Threet? Apparently he ran the spread in high school, and spent a year at Georgia Tech, which runs spread. I think they'll be fine.
Another thing is this Oline blocking scheme is apparently simpler than DeBord's was.
