Ladies and gentleman, we have secured the narcoleptic. Coming next season the Palace, cots on the baseline. Is it a bad thing when ESPN can find highlights of nearly every player in draft, but not the one you just drafted?
I'm not going to lose my mind about this, because it will be a few years before anyone knows if this is a good draft. I will simply say that the Pistons could have had DeMarcus Granger and Bill Walker, which would have constituted a very successful draft in my opinion.

I agree, there’s no reason to even start thinking about any of the Pistons draft picks right now. Though I hear Sharpe is unconscious from beyond the arc.
BTW, Bill Walker is such a throwback name. He might consider changing it to Billius or Billtrop for the NBA.

I dunno - the NBA draft isn't like the NFL or MLB drafts - picks generally pay some sort of dividend pretty damn quickly. There are some late bloomers (normally high schoolers, a guy like Joe Johnson) but when you look at the stars of today's NBA, they were generally pretty productive in their first seasons. I mean, we're pretty sure now that Stuckey is a starting caliber PG, and that Maxiell deserves to be in a quality rotation.

I agree w/ you about guys that are drafted in the lottery. You usually know pretty quickly if they're a player or not. Guys drafted later in the first and into the second sometimes take a bit longer because they're typically Euros or more project type players.
MRG |
06.27.08 - 8:59 am | #

That's the thing. You have to figure Amir and Samb will get a shot before Sharpe or the other two guys - who will reportedly be sent to Europe. So a few years' wait for the new guys given the Pistons' situation seems realistic.
Hans |

True. I think that when you're taking about lottery picks and second rounders, they're two different animals. Rose/Beasley/Mayo/Love are going to be expected to contribute something this year. If they don't, people will be immediately down on them (see Corey Brewer and Mike Conley). Second rounders are overwhelmingly ticketed for the D-League (like Amir), and seeing their "upside" is generally "decent cog in the rotation", expectations are somewhat different.

Christian Laettner. He was in college at the time, so that probably doesn't count.
I know what you're saying though. I think Tayshaun is actually more useful in international play and not a horrendous pick. It's just the nature of being able to literally pick from the best of the NBA that makes him stick out. I would have liked to seen Joe consider CDR, Bill Walker, etc.
Obviously, he wanted two guys he could play overseas. I know nothing about this Sharpe guy. The precious little I do know is that he's a forward who can handle the ball, which fits into what Joe wants in a small forward.
I'm ok with the Sharpe pick, apparently they spent two days evaluating him. I'll trust them on that; outside of Darko, Dumars has an exceptional record developing players. But I really would have took Walker over Plaisted. My guess, based on comments made by Duymars, is that Walker didn't eant to play overseas and the Pistons were specifically looking for guys who would be willing to do so.
Obviously, it's doubtful that any of these guys become anything more than bottom of the rotation guys.

I'd say that Dumars has a solid track record of getting value out of 2nd round picks - most of these guys are throw aways, and he's found pieces for his rotation.

What?
Iverson is a good individual talent, but he's not going to lead any team, ever, to the promised land. He takes too many bad shots and cannot use the pas to spread the floor. yes, he gets to the hoop, but at some point, the point guard needs to be able to control the pace of the game. Iverson can't do that. The best season he was a part of was when the 76ers lost in the Finals to the Lakers, primarily because Larry Brown forced Iverson to slow down the game.
Iverson put up career numbers this year and the Nuggets were awful. I'm not saying that Iverson is selfish, just that he's a high quantity shooter who is too small to play shooting guard, so you get left with a undersized point guard who is a defensive liability.
It's ridiculous to say that with Iverson, the Pistons would have won two more titles. A backcourt of Rip and Iverson would be a nightmare on the defensive end and there's no way that Rip could be productive on the offensive end wih Iverson at the point.

Love him or hate him, this makes me want to vomit:
The two cover a variety of subjects, starting with how Dumars was this close to pulling off a trade for Allen Iverson back in the summer of the 2000.How close is this close? Close enough that Dumars had already called Roundball One’s pilot to meet him at the airport in two hours to pick up Iverson. The proposed four-way deal, which would have cost Detroit Jerry Stackhouse and Jerome Williams, fell apart at the last second when Matt Geiger, of all people, refused to re-work a trade kicker for the deal to work within the salary cap.

In my opinion, Simmons huge problem is that he covers so much Boston stuff.
It's tough to write for an objective audience when you are very clearly subjectivly passionate about a certain topic. And, as shown by Simmons, it leads to writing ridiculous things like "The fans wopn't let the Celtics lose," or that the pistons got back into the game because "the fans were tired from cheering so much" (uh, paraphase).

Hans is right - I think part of Simmons problem is that he has this enormous readership, and like any enormous group of people, it's made up of 90% idiots, and they want him to talk about 90210, and constantly reference "the levels of losing" or the "unintentional comedy scale". I mean, he has a whole readership that write to him with idiotic stories and ask "can I get a ruling on this?". He's pandering, I think.

Yeah, Stuckey is the future. Oh, there's no doubt the Pistons can contend with Billups. I like him, a lot. I think the talk of him being the root of the "complacency" is BS. It starts and ends with Rasheed. If he has a big game, they win. That's all there is to it. Rasheed shows up when he wants to. I love Rasheed, he's one of my favorite NBA players of all time. But there has to be a point when you cut your losses.
I could part with Prince. He's a good player, but he's an offensive liability when he can't hit that 18 foot jumper. Teams just leave him open.
However, you can't move both Rasheed and Prince as neither have viable back ups.

Well, theoretically, you'd be getting a replacement for Sheed in the trade. How hard is it to find a guy that can play a serviceable small forward in the NBA? I feel like they're a dime a dozen.

Because they have around 40 billion power forwards? What do you think they lose by having a starting back court of Billups and Stuckey, and playing Hamilton at the 3? A little defense?

I think they lose a lot of flexibility by going to Stuckey/Rip/Billups back court. That lineup will be able to play great perimeter defense but will be a huge liability in the post. How do they match up with athletic PFs who can shoot and post-up? I don't think they do, at all.
Probably the biggest problem would be their ability to rebound the basketball. That's the Piston's biggest problem, currently. So, I guess if they can get a true big man and a rebounding SF, the trade would make sense. But those commodities are premiums in the NBA.
I'd like to see them make a run at Artest, J. Childress, J. Smith, and E. Brand.

The SEC is undoubtedly the best conference in America. The combination of complete, utter ignorance of academics from grade 4-on to the year-round commitment to training and playing foobawhl puts them slightly above the Pac 10, Big Ten, Big 12, ACC. In that order.

Oh jesus BGH, you've brought me out of hiding:
Which one qualifies as Oxford's "african- american bar?" And what's the criteria for this? Having a black guy from Northwestern who's only slightly less thuggish than Carlton from the Fresh Prince come hang with his Phi Psi buddies for a weekend like two years ago? And somebody has grainy visual evidence in the form of a camera phone pic that it actually happened? Or the bar where all the sorostitutes go when they get hammered and dance to hip-hop like they're complete whores only to be stricken with dead-fish syndrome later that night? Or 54 East or whatever the fuck Will named it- where he likes to pretend he's not stuck in the middle of acres upon acres of farmland but yet utterly cosmopolitan?
(Just kidding. the obvious answer is Circle Bar.)

lol, sorry.
Is Utah actually a decent team? Or are we just saying potential upset because they are from a mid-major and the first game of the season?
They were 9-4 last year with a 5-3 record in the WAC. Looks like they return the following skill players:
Rushing: Darrell Mack, RB, 1,204 yards
Passing: Brian Johnson, QB, 1,847 yards
Receiving: Bradon Godfrey, WR, 524 yards
Tackles: Stevenson Sylvester, LB, 86
Sacks: Paul Kruger, DE, 3; Stevenson Sylvester, LB, 3; Mike Wright, LB, 3
Interceptions: Sean Smith, CB, 4
Looks liek they will be good defensively - they were 11th last year in the NCAA against the pass and # 1 in pass defense efficiency. Last year, they gave up 184 yards in the air per game and are returning what looks like most of their starters.
Looks like some bush-league sports site called Sportable has them ranked #22 going into the season. Phil Steele has them at #23.

Lowest: 14.
I think people are underestimating the fact that even if this offense is bad (and I think it will be), the coaching staff is going to call a lot of home run type plays. So, while I'm sure we'll see a lot of 3 and outs, I think we'll see a decent number of long runs for touchdowns.

Roethlisberger is an elite QB. As bad as the Steelers O-line and play calling was last season, it’s a miracle he dragged them into and nearly won a game in the playoffs. I am unaware of any rational line of argumentation otherwise.
In 2006 and 2007 the Big Ten was terrible and continued to play archaic football. This tended to prop up OSU and UM defenenses (somewhat.) (Note: my theories contain no explanation for the continued bowl successes of Wisconsin and Penn. State.) I believe Tressel’s play calling demonstrated an understanding of the weakness of his defense over the last 2 seasons. DeBord was either completely ignorant of UM’s defensive problems or chose the opposite and mostly wrong counter. I believe that OSU’s defense can be had this season. I think USC will destroy them. Additionally, I think it’s clear Tressel has absolutely no faith in Boeckman. I think RR has a skill set that suits him perfectly to drag the Big Ten, bloodily, into the modern era. Ferentz and Schianno are equally unsuited to do so.
Clearly, I am optimist mostly because I see no reason to be anything else.

For the record, McKala was busy holding Kaylee's hair back while she dealt with her own Mindprobe issues. Jen was busy refereeing a drunken fight between Jennifer and Jenny about who could be "Jenni (dot the I with a heart)" and secretly had plans to secure the honor for herself. Lauren was pissed off at Kaylee for making out with Zach on the way home, but now that Kaylee's puking Lauren has decided to make the terrific decision of giving Zach a bj in first floor lounge. Mckala will undoubtedly be rewarded for babysitting her friend by returning to a locked room where her roommate is having sex with her hick boyfriend from back home, and when she decides to sleep in the lounge she'll walk in on and interrupt aforementioned bj. Zach will stumble back to his room only to find puke free Kaylee passed out in his bed, where he'll pass out and they'll assume they slept together for the next 4 years but it never really happened. Gotta love thursday nights in Oxford.

Michigan will be fine this season if they get some cosistency from the offense. I think they will win a lot of games. But then again, it's early and we haven't seen anyone play yet so I don't want to predict anything. But they will win if they have cosistency. A lot of people say they can't beat Ohio State, but there aren't any great teams anymore so they can beat them. But it's too early to tell. If they get Sheffield into the backfield, they'll be very cosistent.

Answering an old question upthread:
Hi/lo on the offense: 41/13. RichRod will run it up on somebody, but in some road game the offense will sputter and pretty much do nothing right.
Hi/lo on the defense: 34/0. I get good vibes about this D, but again, there will be a road game where the offense will put the D in too many impossible situations.
I'm braced for Michigan to go 7-0 or 6-1 at home, and 1-4 on the road.

Michigan State parties lack cosistency. There are no great parties anymore though, so it's understandable. What Michigan State parties need is someone who knows how to party. I'm not talking about people who put up good party numbers or Moneyball parties, where computers decide the party. I mean gritty, veteran partiers that know how to party. Gary Sheffield comes to mind. I haven't been to Michigan State, so I don't want to comment too much, though. If they get some cosistency in the beer department they will be a good party place. I know this goes against the traditional thinking, and even I was very surprised to find it out, but when a football team gets the ball inside the opponents five yard line to start a possession, they are much more likely to score than if they start in their own territory. The thing is, if the Michigan Badgers can get Stan Threat the ball in the redzone to start their drives, they will win football games. My key to the season for Michigan is to score more points than the other teams and I think they can do it.

I am not defending Joe Morgan—the announcer. I just think there might be a kernel of rationality behind his otherwise unfortunate raving. Bill James invented a pseudo stat ranking what he called ‘numbers players’ or something that looked at players who did the little things which were not necessarily based on athletic talent but more smart play. These could erroneously termed in intangibles or players that excel at this called gritty, Ecksteinian—whatever. Anyway, I think things like base stealing percentage and not grounding into double plays were factored into this ranking. Joe Morgan ranked as the highest player in history in this made up ranking. So, in addition to being absurdly talented he was disciplined, consistent (had to!) and smart enough to do the little (non athletic) things that helped his team win championships. This might be what he’s rambling about. Not a sermon just a thought.

If your argument is that Joe Morgan was an excellent baseball player, only an idiot would debate that. Also, yes, not hitting into double-plays and stealing a base has value. I think the main thrust is that stealing a base does not have as much value as most think, and you have to be extremely successful at it for any real, positive net impact.

Dumars has made errors, but he's also pulled off soem great steals.
Maxiell, Stuckey, Prince, and Johnson all are currently/on track to become bonified NBA players and all were non-lottery selections.
Dumars takes chances on upside and when doing that, you're going to make some mistakes.
After thinking about it, I don't mind this Sharpe pick. Tons of upside, very athletic, big body guy who can play in the post and spread the floor with his jump shot. Defensively, he's the sort of athlete that you need to guard Lebron.
To pick CDR would have been problematic. First, he's a 2 guard, the one position the Pistons are most solid at. Yes, he can play 3 in college but not on the pro level. Second, he's not a great all-around athlete. That's one consistency with Dumars' startegy: athleticism is paramount.
I'm not saying that Sharpe will pan out and CDR/Bill Walker won't. I am saying that Dumars has been consistent with his philosphy and the only time he deviated from that philosphy was with Darko. Sustain success, as we all know, requires developing a plan and sticking to it, even if it looks questionable in its immediacy.

I bet Bill Walker's going to suck in the NBA. Most NBA GMs clearly agree. When an "obvious" guy is still available late in the second round, he's got issues. And seriously, any Piston fan bitching about whom the team didn't draft in the SECOND ROUND is going overboard. In any given year, probably 25-27 of the 30 second-round picks will never make an impact in the league. There's a reason the league doesn't give those guys guaranteed money.

Joe Morgan, in a great twist, is always a highly rated player by the same statistics he hates.
The issue I have with him isn't that he's completely wrong all the time, it's that he completely and totally discounts any form of analysis or thought that wasn't around when he played or offered by someone who didn't play at the Major League level.
I know yesterday I was making fun of people talking about S&C who have never participated in it in their lives, but I think that's a little different than completely discounting the opinion of someone because they weren't a part of the .0000001% of the population who makes it to the Majors, ya know?

Personally, I would have preferred Jordan and Walker. Since Dumars was drafting for potential (which is the right strategy in the 2nd) I think that tandem has more proverbial "upside" than Sharpe and Plaisted. Then again, I've literally never seen Sharpe play, so I'm more than willing to wait and see.
There's some talk that he wanted to stash two guys in the Euros and couldn't have done that with Jordan and Walker. I don't know. It seems like they will have plenty of roster spots available, but again, I'll wait and see if a trade affects that.
I do like moving down a few spots and getting out of guaranteed contracts.

I believe you said yesterday that you would post up about barwis on your site as soon as you could figure out what the WLA stance on him and the new training methods should be...
Most of the "new" performance oriented training methodologies are ultimately derivative of the work of Yuri Verkhoshansky - a former Soviet athlete and later Soviet National team coach who worked for many years on advancing the theories of plyometrics, sport specific training, etc etc...
I believe there were some publications in Russian (which I cannot read anyway) but most people refer to the english publication "Supertraining" Siff M.C. & Verkhoshansky Y.V. 1999
Obviously people took the theories from there and have improved or modified them, but in essence most of these theories came into being because of Verkhoshansky's publications.
I think it seems pretty clear what the WLA's take should be...

@ troll,
Obviously, this is just my opinion of Tressel’s opinion which surprises me that you even care. I will offer what ‘concrete’ support I can with the understanding that my ‘evidence’ is mostly empirical and hardly conclusive. My opinion may be strongly colored by the fact that I don’t think Boeckman is more than an acceptable game manager and place holder. For the record, I think Krenzel is highly underrated.
Tressel trusted Smith in ‘06. That was plain to see. He trusted Krenzel to a point (“Holy Buckeye!” against Purdue) but he mostly trusted his defense. Tressel also trusted Krenzel enough to want the ball in his hands on so many plays—especially in the championship game when the was the leading rusher. His play calling appears to be trying to protect Boeckman and build up his confidence more than the others. Last season, Tressel moved away from turtling towards bombs away in the second half of blow outs. I took this to mean he was concerned about Boeckman and wanted to protect him by building up his confidence. The nail in the coffin was the Michigan game. After Boeckman’s INT Tressel basically shut him down. 14-3 was not an overwhelming lead. If Henne had been able to get lucky or pull it together (which he had done in other games) that game would have gotten a lot more interesting. Yet, OSU wasted the entire second half plunging into the line or having Boeckman eat the ball. I know Tressel turtles but that seemed premature even for him.
I think Tressel’s concern is warranted. Boeckman’s decision making (when it’s not a specially designed early down play action either he’s wide open or eat it) is not the best. He throws a nice deep ball. He just throws it to the safety way too much.
Carr didn’t trust any of his QB’s to do anything until he had his back to the wall.

the pervasive thought at the time of the hafner signing was that dolan was going to sign either hafner or sabathia but not both.
cc recently was rumored to be seeking a "santana" contract. 6 years 137.5 contract with full no trade clause will never happen in cleveland.
cleveland is a stingy organization, in part because they can't get anyone to the park. which is funny, because they sold out every home game for like 11 years straight.
if true that the decision was down to cc and hafner, then lol @ the indians. i hate cleveland more than i hate boston teams.

Tressel did the same against MSU. After Boeckman committed two turnovers that led to MSU defensive scores, OSU didn't call another pass play the rest of the game, even after MSU closed it to 24-17.

The Indians historically have had poor attendance. When they played in the "Mistake on the Lake," I knew guys who'd drive there when the Tigers were in town and buy good lower-deck seats. With Jacobs Field they seem to have capitalized on both the novelty of a new stadium and the fact that they were winning. Now both have changed and their fans have returned to their usual apathy.

----------------------------------
imafreak- regarding tressel's "turtling"...
Interesting that you bring up the INT and the switch to a ball control offense. A similar occurance in the MSU game mentioned by hat backs up your idea.
Previously there was a small thought rolling around in my head that if there was ever a time when OSU could have piled it on UM last year was the time (Henne and Hart were pathetic in their courageous but futile efforts)
After the game the thought occured to me that Tressel might have actually put the brakes on in order to NOT embarrass UM and Carr in that (Carr and the Seniors last) game...
But now, with your argument and the additional evidence of the MSU similarity, I can now restore my belief that Tressel is Satan and that he did not any way show compassion for Carr and the injured seniors, rather he only put the brakes on to ensure the win (as we were basically harmless offensively and a defensive comeback was our only hope)...
Thank you for restoring all that is right in the world.

Fair enough, as the scenarios both of you guys painted really are what happened in the LSU game. ( but behind so late in the game Boeckman had to pass)--- Tressel IS conservative and if the pass fails he'll run it, but fwiw, if you had Beanie and the size OL he has....is that not an acceptable strategy? ...btw Henton has left OSU (as u know) but this Bauserman really looked pretty good in the spring game

Tressel's treatment of Lloyd last year was like watching f fight between a really big guy and a small guy with the big guy putting his hand on top of the lil guy and just watching him flail away while he keeps him at a safe distance and laughs.
Then with his other hand, the big guy bitch slaps the lil guy every so often just to embarrass him. Then the big guy gets tired of the game and gives the lil guy a wedgie and whispers in his ear "You're lucky I don't tie you up into a knot and stuff you into the garbage can"
Not that that ever happened to me or anything.

I thought Mallet should've stayed in in the second half. It was obvious that Henne had nothing left and I doubt Mallet could've done anything worse. Henne's effort was valiant, but he just didn't have the physical tools at that point to overcome his injuries, the weather, and Manningham's sudden case of the dropsies in the biggest game of the year.
Also, I thought it was pretty obvious that Tressel turned off the engine and just let Wells run to his heart's delight. He knew we had nothing but injured superstars and a God-like left tackle. I was freezing, soaked through with rain, and hungover as fuck, and I just stood there pissed off that we were so pathetic and that Tressel saw the blood in the water and called off the sharks. I thought it was a slight to Carr.

To be fair to the Michigan D, Wells' numbers were fairly pedestrian in the first half (less than 4 YPC). it was only after the gimpy offense went 3-and-out on every possession of the game that the D got tired and the yards began to stack up. The 200+ yards stat was impressive, but didn't tell the whole story.

Tressel bitch slapped Lloyd by calling off the dogs. Plain and simple. Knew Lloyd lacked the balls to do anything but keep dead armed Henne in there and hope that Manningham got behind the defense for a 20 point touchdown catch.

I agree with TBS. Lloyd sold out the team out of a sense of loyalty to Henne. It was clear that he was physically unable to do . . . well, anything, but Lloyd kept him in anyway.
Mallett was a turnover factory, but at least he presented some threat of completing a pass (which would have been promptly dropped by our receivers).

When Ted Ginn Jr. went down against Florida you guys were done. You didn't have anybody left to stretch the field (at least that they were afraid of) and Troy Smith looked blatantly unspectacular.
You can make the same decisions as a coach to not run up the score. Like putting in the scout team against YSU and it is meant to not be a prick. But calling off the war machine against your biggest rival with an 11 point lead in the early moments of the 3rd quarter was a calculated dick move.
If it had been the other way around Lloyd would've done the same thing, but done it out of respect. Bo and Woody on the other hand would've ground each other into dust. It depends on the coach. Hopefully this year RichRod and Tressel can hate each other in a good ol' fashion way. I'd like that kind of civilized hatred amongst participants to come back to the game.

You have it completely backwards. Lloyd threw them (and the rest of the team) under the bus by playing someone who did not give us the best chance to win. They returned to win games, not just to get in the game. They deserved to have the coaches pull out all of the stops to try and win that game. Lloyd didn't.

I don't think anyone is throwing the seniors under the bus. We all know the type of indivduals they were. I think DA is saying that Carr threw the team under the bus by sticking with his seniors when he could've brought in Mallett (I've been neglecting the second t this entire conversation) and had a QB who didn't have a deadweight throwing arm into the game.
On a side note I hope to hell this works out. Clemson jobbed McElrathbey and should be ashamed.

I disagree. The weather sucked. Henne was hurt but our next best option was Edward Mallet-Hands. You've got a stud at tailback and a guy at QB whom you don't have the greatest confidence in. I think the logical, vanilla, OMG I'M THE ONE PERSON ON THE PLANET WITHOUT AN IMAGINATION thing to do was for Tressel to pound it out and wear down our defense. It's not like he had USC's weapons and they decided to put a tackle in the backfield and rumble ahead for 2.5 yards a play- that 11 point lead was equivalent to at least 21 and there wasn't much hope of us coming back.

Hey those seniors gave up alot to come back -you're pretty quick to throw them under the bus..
Lets see - Long went #1 - which he wouldn't have done in the 07 draft (thomas was considered a bigger prospect)
Henne went in the second round - he would not have been taken earlier as Russell was the #1 qb prospect and quinn was the #2 in 07.
And Hart went right about where he would have been if he came out early.
So I don't see how they gave up a lot in terms of their pro career by coming back to UM - if anything these three did themselves a favor by coming back.
(By favor I mean in terms of NFL bucks - not the same of losing to App St and OSU for the 4th time in a row.)

Rodriguez is a prick" to "Joe Tiller has never not reeked of alcohol at the post game handshake, and he looks like the BK killer, so I wouldn't put to much stock in what he has to say".
You got to give Trifle credit: he is pretty good with irony.

Congratulations, Michigan fans.
Jordan Barnes signed with you today. I am a Hoosier fan and he was deciding whether to commit to IU or Michigan. We were his best two offers, by far. UofC what interested (they signed four from Indiana yesterday) but they had not offered. I thought that he might come to IU. Congrats.

So according to varsity blue OSU is now at 23 commits (3-5*, 12-4*, 8-3*) - most of their class is now settled. No doubt looks like a great class.
Anyone else think the trend of so many commits before the sr season is played is kind of crazy?
Some kids will stagnate and some late bloomers will flourish...
Granted I am sure most kids will perform as expected, but doesn't it seem logical that the early commitment trend (across NCAA fb in general) may result in more quality "late upswing" kids being available late to schools that don't fill classes as quickly? (ie non-powerhouses) Similarly - some of the powerhouses will be locked out on pulling in these kids due to full classes... (Resulting in either more parity or more unpredictability of recruiting classes than in the past)
Or do you think the coaches are so adept at assessing talent and knowing what is available in a particular year (coupled with the summer camps) that it probably won't make a difference?
No school in particular in mind, but what makes me question the early commits/offers trend are some of the 3* commits "highlight" tapes in particular looking relatively unspectacular to garner the early offers and subsequent commitment.
For the record I am generally in the "the coaches know what they are doing" camp.

...may result in more quality "late upswing" kids being available late to schools that don't fill classes as quickly?
i think the odds are just as good that the 3* committed guy from osu has a breakout year as the 3* uncommitted who may fall to Pur.
besides, the more early verbals that occur, the less meaning a verbal really has. IOW, a verbal these days isn't much more than a leader 5-10 years ago.

@97alum
any time you're trying to make a decision based on incomplete information, the more data points you have, the better you will do. The point about the early signings is that data from senior year is being displaced by following these kids longer, more camp evaluations, and yes, even using the recruiting services to narrow in on the most likely to succeed. They still have a healthy amount of data to judge the kids on. so while it would make sense to wait after the season, the benefit of early signings outweighs the risks that the kids won't pan out.
Of course you could just pull an alabama and over-sign by 6 or 7 kids each year and just give schollies to the top 25. at least until the ncdoubleassholes do something about over-signing.

Ninja - I too would like to hear what the buckeye fans think of their class being full so early... If it was us I'd second guess some of those lower caliber recruits...
Not a loser - I agree with what you are saying about the fact that they are evaluating these kids over longer time frames (see the post about the Florida junior QB above by Afrocalypse Now at 11:07pm). Also the oversigning could become much more of an unfair advantage with the early commit trend.
Musket - I don't know if I believe Henson should even be on that list. However, that one season was pretty good, and he did beat both OSU and win a bowl.
************************************
Speaking of the Freep top 10 UM QBs list. Henne is #4, Navarre is #7.
Now I know it is enjoyable to make the Tyrannosaurus rex comparisons to Navarre, but: 1) He had the same records just previous to Henne, 2) He also won only a single bowl game (also against UF) 3) He beat OSU 4) He did it in less seasons (2001-2003 vs 2004-2007)
I would still prefer Henne to Navarre myself, and I think Henne will be a good pro and was a steal in the draft, but based on results thus far at this point IMO Navarre should get the nod.

Henson was the best QB to ever play at Michigan. Just because he chose baseball and Carr mishandled the Brady/Henson situation doesn't take away from his amazing talent. Also, if you could swap Henne into Navarre's years and vice versa, Henne would have made those teams amazing. Henne was handicapped by Lloyd Carr trying to shift responsibilities to his coordinators.
Henne could have just as good an NFL career as Brady. He has more raw talent and is just as smart. He just needs some top notch coaching.
Also, I love soccer, but already I've seen way to much fucking diving through 16minutes. Damn Euros.

Daniel L - I would agree that talent wise, Henson might have been the best. But does talent and one season of results make him one of the 10 best QBs over 30 years?
When Carr was splitting time between Henson and Brady, it was in his interest, not in the interest of the team's success. (Or he would have unseated Brady)
What if Carr had sat him (like most other underclassman QB's) until he thought he was ready to take over? Would he have left, or just not come? Either way, not the sign of a great QB to me. (Of course you could argue that Carr played him because he thought he could unseat Brady-but if I remember correctly, at the end of those games we always needed Brady to come back in)
And then he left. So talent or not, we ended up getting 1 OSU win and 1 bowl win from him. Does that make him top 10? Probably not IMO, maybe an honorable mention based on that single season's results. Was he talented? Of course and probably more than the others (at least until he went to the Yankees, because the NFL didn't work out so well, although I know I was rooting for him). But a lot of other guys stuck it out and were arguable more productive for UM over that 30 year span, and that should count for something.
I too think Henne has the potential to be great in the NFL, but is it really valid to say - I think this guy was more talented so he was the better QB for UM? Or should it be by numbers?
Would he have been better than Navarre on those teams? Probably.
All I am saying is thus far, the RESULTS (sorry, don't know how to boldface) say there isn't that much difference as I would have expected, and I don't know if when comparisons are made apparent talent should trump results on the field.

Ninja - I too would like to hear what the buckeye fans think of their class being full so early...
Well I am one who hinted at it in my above post...I think it could be good or bad, it depends on the kid. They could get hurt in their senior season then OSU looks like pricks if they renege on an offer, he could screw up off the field and come as damaged goods. ...but if they lock up a bunch of studs, that's great. .....the main thing to remember is that it's all a crap shoot anyway. The only way to judge this stuff, I feel, is to look at who's the main guy recruiting for the school, go back & see how well he's done in the past at scoping out the talent then cross your fingers.

I said best QB. Not most productive, not best stats. Although I do understand how subjective "best" is, and what do we measure it with. I'll amend my statement to say "Henson was the most talented QB ever to play at Michigan. Had he been more mature, he could have had the best 2 seasons EVER for a UM QB, instead of just the one best season."
Idle curiosity, does anyone know what Henson was projected as if he had declared for the NFL draft after his Junior year?

I think it's great that none of the media types are giving M any chance of doing well this year. Phil Steele has UM well back in the pack in the B10, and CFN more or less says that Utah will beat us. For RR and the staff it's an ideal situation from a summer workout and fall camp motivational standpoint. If nothing else, he won't have too many big heads to deal with.

Some "insider" claimed awhile back that most of the staff (Carr included) believed that Henson was the better player, but that QB coach Stan Parrish lobbied for Brady, and the platoon system was launched as a compromise. Carr seems to have expected Henson to seize control of the job (keep in mind, Brady's junior year in '98 wasn't all that great - our offense struggled to move the ball much of that year), but the reverse ended up happening.
Anyway, I forget who said this, but it seems plausible.

Interesting post hat.
Did anyone ever read anything about what the evaluation on Henson was after he came back to the league? I am sure some of it had to do with so much time away, and the truncated nature of his college career; but it would be interesting to hear what NFL guys felt his shortcomings were on the comeback attempt.

Hey JHS,
I think Henson would have won the Heisman (over Eric Crouch, what a joke) and led us to the Championship against Miami.
I don't know if we would have beat them or not, but I'm sure U-M with a senior Henson coulda won it that year.
Terrell might have came back for his senior season which might have helped him be more mature on the next stage.
Good luck with the new format Brian and thanks for the great job you do!!
