Well all I care about right now is M hockey. The team is looking strong still, I really dont care what anyone says. I see the team going to the CCHA championship and having a tough time with a good Miami or MSU team. After that I bet they head to Wisconsin and play in that regional, at least I hope (i'm from WI and want to go).
I see Michigan making it to the frozen four...here are my picks
1. Michigan
2. CC
3. ND
4. NH/BC
If Michigan has to play an upper-tier WCHA team such as CC or ND I find them having a very tough time. Those teams are big and physical which I think will be tough for our younger and smaller team to handle. Thats my opinion

i'm not too worried about hockey. at least, not any more than any other year.
they played lights out against MU a few weeks ago. since then, i think the kolarik injury hurt them, as well as a bit of complacency from a few of the young guys. hence the bad game fri at Munn, and the sat loss in big rapids. i'm not expecting great hockey when they play whomever in the 2nd rd of the CCHAs (probably no kolarik, 2 weeks off, playing a mediocre at best team), but i do expect 1st rate hockey when they get to the joe at the end of the month.
as usual, the wild card is Sauer. he's been shaky the last 2-3 weeks, even in wins. questionable positioning at times, lots of bad rebounds. hopefully, they can start playing D the way they did in Nov-Dec and limit the shots to 22-27 per game, and not 32-37.

Kolarik is essential for the penalty kill and horrible defensive breakdowns (leaving the pass wide open) have led to several goals in the last few games.

and the baseball team sucking since the Nova series is harsh... Trip (ZP) only went 3 inns on the mound (for some reason), and they hit the ball well against the #1 team in the nations top 2 pitchers.
health on the mound is critical for this team, but that is always critical for a northern team. pitching depth DNE in the north compared to the top southern teams.
this weekend they play ECU and few other good teams, and i expect better results. if Trip goes, anyway.

I don't know much about college baseball- so I have a question for you fans. How does the early season non-con schedule impact the post season? I can assume that if M were to win a B10 regular season or tournament crown they would automatically qualify, but how many at-large spots are available, if any, for a northern team that doesn't in the conference? If M were to roll up a good record in B10 play but not win the conference, and have a subpar early season, would they be out?

They're not running too much 1-3-1 since Christmas, IIRC.
I think the problem facing the bball team is the lack of quality guards, and the one talented guard they have seems to have an IQ of 75. The guards lose their man so often defensively and that ends up becoming a wide open 3 pointer.
Offensively they need an intelligent ball-handler. Grady is improving but Manny is a turnover machine.

@ dex:
The NCAA baseball tournament is a lot like basketball--there are 30 conferences with automatic bids, and there are 34 at large bids.
For whatever reason, the NCAA baseball committee will always invite a team with 40 wins to the tournament. I don't think there has been an exception to this pattern in the last decade or so.
Michigan is 4-3 with 48 games left, so they will need to go 36-12 to hit the 40-win mark (or they will need to win some games in the conference tournament).
Last year, the Big Ten got 3 teams in the tournament--conference tournament champion Ohio State, plus conference regular season #1 Michigan (39-16) and regular season #2 Minnesota (40-16). Three teams was unusual for the Big Ten, but two teams isn't. I think Minnesota got in because of the 40-win rule, and Michigan got in because they actually deserved it.

This is for the earlier post on the smash route:
Smash routes are great in the red zone. You will usually have press coverage from the corner and if you are about at the ten or further out, the corner route is money. A safety will sit at about 5-8 yds off and if you can lean him in and break, there is no help from the corner. It's way easier to throw than a fade route and has the same effect. I still contend that the end zone fade is the hardest ball to throw in football and I yell everytime it gets thrown on 3rd or 4th down in goal line situations. Jackass HS coaches call this route for their 5'8" WR with a QB who has no business even attempting this difficult of a pass. I hope Gsimmons' OC isn't one of these guys. If he is, I apologize, but I'll still say he's a jackass.

ditto what alton said...
40 Ws is a good bench mark. even for northern schools.
the only reason OSU got in last year was that they won the auto bid. they had a good year, but i'm not sure the committee would have let them in at-large. M & Minn were legit NCAA teams.
i don't see any way the B10 would get more than 3 teams in the tourney.

One more thing on the "smash route article" before. The TE can sometimes be a great option if you work the smash combo, over and over, the safety will cheat to the corner and the TE runs a skinny post, bam TD. If you ever see a TE catch a TD in the red zone, odds are there was a corner route that the safety bit on. It's hard for the MLB to get that deep to cover the middle if the TE is going full speed.
Keegan |

keegan,
you are right, hard cover, in tamp two, for a mlb to run that middle seam....
however, a te should never get a free release... there in lies the problem.... keeping a te on the line, has become a lost art, in this new era of de's only wanting to make plays in the back field..
as far as my oc, it is the head coach, so i wont say anything negative, he does a good job, we are not really a passing team, but he tries to become one for me, becasue of what we see night in and night out... i guess the smash is one of their default calls against a four accross look, the problem is that we are alwyas in a 4 deep shell, but rarely do we stay in it..... disguise everything, out technique people, and put your best athletes in a position to make the majority of plays, that is my secret...

@ DanK:
I should have added that exactly 4 of the 34 at large teams could be considered "Northern" schools. The Big Ten had their 2 at large teams, and the Big East had 2 at large teams--Louisville (40-20) and St John's (40-17) were selected at large in addition to conference champion Rutgers (41-19). I don't know for certain that Louisville is "northern," but they are in a semi-northern conference. Oregon State also had an at large bid, but I don't really count them as "northern."

gsims,
Yeah, getting a shot on the TE is huge and completely lost. Our coaches stressed to the DE's to not allow a free release and it helped a lot. TE were not a threat when we played because of that. Disguising coverage is fairly easy to teach and hard for HS qb's to read coverage that quickly.
