I don't want a proven above-average coach (Tedford, Grobe, Ferentz, etc.). Let's take a chance on a guy who hasn't gotten a chance on a real stage yet.

Hell, Tenuto would be an adequate hire, again with a bit of polish. How about June Jones at Hawaii? (Come to think of it, who would leave Hawaii for the upper midwest?)

Don't take Miles' statement literally. He probably talked it over with the AD here to get clearance and they agreed with the language. The topics in the talks remain private and unexplained. There was an offer, some more detailed talks, they discussed the whole package so Miles could consider it, and Miles said no.

^^I concur. However, there is an inevitable transition period for a 1st time head coach. That transition won't be easy with Kitten Killer and his minions stabbing him in the back.
With Miles, I think we will win 8-9 games next year. With English, 4-6 at best.
If its English he better hook up a top flight OC, that wont happen because the last thing a young coach wants is another up and coming OC next to him if he is the DC/HC.

Out of that list I like Grobe the best. I've seen him coach against Miami when he was at Ohio. He never beat us but he returned that program to respectability after years of hardship.

I don't think it was the offer. I can't see Michigan not giving him what he wants within reason. If he says he needs money for assistants to be successful, he'd have it. Now if he said he wanted Lloyd gone, that might be a sticking point. But there is no way it was about money or coaching staff, or BM/MSC are the dumbest people alive, and I highly doubt that.
I think, in the end, Les just decided to stay at LSU.
What about English with Loeffler as OC? I could stomach that if only because of hope for the future.

That's exactly my point. DC for 1 good yr, 1 mediocre yr should not mean the keys to one of the best jobs in all of CF. It's hit and miss. And when you miss, it can get real ugly. Why do we have to take that chance? Why aren't we in FL's league when they got Meyer, who had success as HC previously. That should be the standard!
There are a dozen coaches that I could think of who have experience as HC and are realistic (as in not Meyer or Stoops, etc. who are obviously unrealistic).

Damn, some of us are just way too arrogant. Michigan isn't "the best job in college football". It's one of the elite, but not the best. We've already been turned down by a handfull of coaches. That should tell us all something.

Regarding an option attack, it depends on who you're asking. It seems that there are some people that worry about hurting recruiting by running a QB spread option offense, and also wonder about the long term viability of running an option offense that splutters when the QB gets hurt (see: Oregon).
Personally, as much as I love the QB spread offense, I would support any offense that was consistent and capable. We haven't had that for 6-7 years.
I bet Rick Astley's watched football in the past. His voice could get people in line. Maybe we should take a look at him...

We have replaced the domers as the joke of college football. The only was to save face in this is to hire English and say all along he was getting the job. One positive of this is all the free time I will have on Saturdays next fall.

I've always associated UM with a pro style attack. It would be weird to see something like the option run at UM. I think Henson, Brady, Griese, Henne. It would be interesting to see how the UM fanbase would respond to an option attack as its primary offensive weapon.

And for those who say the program has gone down the tubes, you're wrong. This is a "terrible" season and we're 8-4 in the Capitol One bowl. We're going to be just fine.
As far as "belowpar" is concerned, my belief is that that person is a member of the LSU AD and is leaking accurately to try to control the internet chat among the LSU fanbase. It would be nice if the AD here would plant someone in these Boards to let us know what is really going on. In retrospect, it is a rather savvy move on their part.

So Michigan stumbles along at 8-4, 7-5 for the next two seasons, losing to OSU each time and losing bowl games as well. By that time the fan base is either apoplectic or apathetic, and Hoke gets the call. Woo.

I think the Kelly comments were blown way out of proportion. He was defending his guys. When he said they grew surrounded by violence, I don't think that's a longshot comment. I have a hard time believing this is what the problem is with us looking at him, honestly.

First of all anyone who has stoped by and grabed a burger from me a "No.9" knows that I am as real as it gets.
I grew up in Bk..NYC and this guy did not lie one bit. So why are they holding this against him...because he's white?...that is a crock. Thoes are the laws of the street, thoes are the laws you must follow if you like living. It's not like everyones name is Chief flocks-o-doe and you can just pick up and leave.
If something happens and it does not concern you …keep your mouth shut….period! Talk to the cops…forget it! Now…is it right that people have to live that way…HELL NO! But…if you like breathing….you follow the laws of the street until you can get out of that environment.
Going against street laws is not an option.

Ronald Bellamy was on the TJ Duckett show last night and he was also pushing for Ron English.
Listen, I understand the majority of the kids on the team relate to English and like him a lot. But that's more of a hinderance than anything. Look how they responded on DEFENSE this year. They sucked. No heart. No leadership. No big licks. This was one of the worst defenses in recent memory.
These kids are backing English because they like him. Fuck That! Do you think any of the kids from 1969 liked Bo? Hell no! They hated him. He was hard and tough and took no crap.
This bullshit about the kids "liking him" has got to stop. Don't hire English and get rid of any kid who doesn't perform for the new coach.

On R.English...well...something tells me that he has something in his back pocket as far as a HC position. We have only seen defense...he's been here what...a couple of years. You can only work with what you got. Now...he may have some offence schemes that are pretty good. But we may never know. I think a problem that we have in this country is that we are always looking at what someone has done rather than their potential for the future. The mindset changes when you have more skin in the game.
I can see two possible scenarios re Miles.
(1) UM had an opportunity to lock him up (handshake deal) before the SECCG with an all-out, your our only guy offer. Didn't happen because it wasn't true at that time (MSC not on board, internal dissension in AD, etc.). Now Miles has doubts as to whether his "dream" really exists (certainly, the atmospherics are all wrong). UM's "apology accepted" only in the Darth Vader/orignal Star Wars trilogy sense. Maybe Miles reconsiders in 2-3 years if program really needs saving ("all is forgiven, I'm coming home").
(2) They've agreed in principle on a deal to be re-offered after the NC game if the job's still open (i.e., an equal or better candidate doesn't agree to come in beforehand). This is strictly between LM, BM and MSC only, therefore, no leaks possible and if it happens, LSU is screwed as it has lost its top 2 coaches and everyone else worthy of consideration has been hired (nasty but sweet!).

Looks like Les is gone for sure, 100%. I am a die hard Les to Michigan guy and now I give him 0% chance of coming here. He probably won't ever come here. So we blew it and so did he. His dream job is something he will never obtain...well unless our next coach sucks ass (god forbid).
So what is the best possible hire outside of Les? I'm assuming Kelly won't be hired.

For the love of Michigan Football, please everyone, email MSC and BM and kindly request they AT LEAST interview Brian Kelly.
He has been the best candidate all this time, and there is no reason a program like Nebraska can interview him and we can't.
Of course the 2 obvious (but not good) reasons:
-- He made DeBord look bad by cleaning up his mess. If he became our coach there's clearly no place for DeBord on next year's staff. A former failed HC working in tandem with a successful HC of the same program isn't going to happen. First, I think people need to get over Miles. I'm not and have never been convinced that he is any kind of genius. He sounds like an idiot for one and I don't find that he has done anything impressive. I think people want him more just because it feels like we lost him. What happened to moving Michigan forward and getting something new going here. People really deep down don't want to lose the connection to Schembechler is what I suspect. Regardless, I would be happier to see us go with Jim Harbaugh or Ron English. the fact that Jim got Stanford ready to beat USC and Cal says enough to me, plus he's already won it all at a lower devision... isn't this what everyone is looking for (someone to be our Jim Tressel -- how about Jim Harbaugh). I think that really right now he is the only one that legitamitely would make me hopeful to see what happens next year and not bitter because I'm expecting a failure. I don't want a Hoke or a Cowher or any other fool that doesn't deserve Michigan. And, by the way Miles ain't over by a long shot, even though I wish he were. I suspect if we don't have a coach by the Bowl game or the NC game for that matter, he's our next coach. I prefer to go in another direction, but I have no worries that whoever gets the job I will support. My guess is that if nobody great materializes, we will end of with Ron English. personally I think he deserves it. It was our offense that let us down this year. Even the App State game (hey they are a dynamic team offensively and can put the points up in a hurry and did, same with Oregon) the only way to beat teams like that is to have an even better performance from our offense. Our offense should have been averaging 40 points per game this year if everything had gone according to plan.

It makes sense to cut a deal between both sides and create a smokescreen so people layoff the speculation until after the BCS title game. If Michigan says they will wait until mid-January to make a decision, then don't count Miles out at all.

I am with Brian -- no way in hell I believe that explanation. Why in the hell would BM and MSC call of all people, LES MILES, to discuss a coaching search at Michigan? It makes no sense. Maybe I am wrong or stupid or both - but I still think Les Miles will be coaching in Ann Arbor next year. All of this was fishy, but this really solidifies it.
