The deal that is being described (expanded basic for 9 mos then Digital and then maybe sports tier) flies very much in the face of what was reported several months ago - that this deal between Comcast and the BTN/Fox was a side agreement in Fox Sports San Francisco being sold to Comcast.
The deal described in your post could have been made at any time (and is probably the model that will be followed with Time Warner and MediaCom)
I suspect that what is clouding the issue is that there is (and always was going to be) a different set of rules between the footprint and outside the footprint) and that the reporting cannot be sure of which side is being talked about until the deal is actually released to the public.
If the Big Ten has made a deal that appears on the surface to be a bad one, then they are going to count heavily on state legislatures to force the cable companies to keep it on expanded basic - in exchange for continued community monopolies. State legislators got enough consumer complaints over the past 9 months that they are not eager to have access granted only to have it yanked away again.

What is it disaster to put it on sports package. I think it makes sense. I am a huge big ten fan and I don't want to pay for big ten network during the summer months. I can easily have the sports package during them months i want to watch it and it gives everyone those choices. What is the problem?

DanK,
You know where I grew up so this shouldn't come as a surprise, but my best friend and I and two of the hottest chicks in school used to skip afternoon classes and go to the Okemos so they could order Monte Cristos at Bennigan's. Of course, keeping with tonights theme, one got pregnant at 20, the other get married at 24, and they've both put on 40 lbs. But once upon a time they were worth skipping school for. True story.

Verne is cool with him then asks him what the hell a Buckeye is. The host says it is something that beats a Wolverine. Verne responds back with “I think it looks like a turd or something”.

here's a realistic look at ND's upcoming season. Keep in mind that their offensive line is in the bottom 20 of all college football (division three included)
% chance of ND losing
1. SDSU 10%
2. Michigan 95%
3. at MSU 60%
4. Purdue 35%
5. Stanford 30%
6. at UNC 15%
7. at UW 50%
8. Pittsburg 40%
9. at BC 80%
10. at Navy 40%
11. Syracuse 5%
12. at USC 100%
So they're probably looking at 5 or 6 loses in there. But that's only because their schedule is horrid.
Best case scenario is a repeat 3-9 season if msu, purdue, stan, wash, pitt, and navy can get it together.

Come on Moose- you've gotta be fair. They kept it off for the summer after senior year, then the ones who didn't go away to school put on 10 by the time you came home for a football game and 15 by Thanksgiving. By holiday break you couldn't wait to get back to the girl you left at school and by that next summer the girls who stayed home were dating the guy who was probably pretty smart but never cared about school and had managed to get himself a decent job.
Summer after freshman year goes by and things aren't that different, and then she's gotten depressed/comfortable/whatever and by that NEXT Thanksgiving she's got the 40. And it happens to the guys, too.
So, wild stab in the dark: Williamston?

You think their line will still be that bad? I'd have to think they'd improve at least some, there's too much talent not to. And State always plays them well so I'd up the chances of Lil' Bro beating them.
I'd rank a 3-9 Domer season at #3 on my wishlist right after us pulling out a NC (.01% chance) and us beating OSU (40%? chance).

watch the navy and airforce games, it's one thing if you let all 4 wolverine d-line men sack the QB on one play. It's another when you REPEATEDLY let all four 5-10 240 lb guys from a service academy do that.
They lost their only senior (sullivan?) and their best TE. So yeah, they got a lot of starters coming back. That didn't exactly help their secondary the last few years. Over-rated no-talent hacks with an extra year of experience are still over-rated no talent hacks.

Some more random observations:
Wasn't it RR who started recruiting FL from the North this year? Jamaal Berry and 4* S Vlad Emilien have "high" interest in OSU now. What the hell is Tressel telling these kids?
3* Orlando S Mike Jones has "high" interest in UM and ND.
There are like no defensive ends in the US this year.
Please, Darius Winston. And Dr. Dre Kirkpatrick. That would be nice. And a DE.
I realize that following recruiting is like being addicted to drugs. You get a really quick high from a commitment, but the high goes away and you only want more.

Yes, you have a good basketball team and a coach/man I admire very much in Tom Izzo. To be honest with you, I root for MSU to do well in basketball.
Still, that doesn't change the fact that MSU has a mostly (and hilariously so) horrific football program. I mean, the ND meltdown? You can't make that sort of mental weakness up. It was just so startlingly pathetic.
And the fact that you think Dantonio is going to lead into the light is, debatably, even more pathetic. Everything that Izzo stands for: class, accountability, winning - well, seems to stand for the Dantonio opposite. I mean, talking trash to 21 year olds that just embarrassed you is always a sound philosophical decision. Face the facts: Dantonio is just a less effusive version of JLS.

Is Dantonio that bad a coach? I don't like him. He seems like an ass, but he's also trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator in Lansing.
Okay, just looked up his record at Cincy. 7-5 seasons. But Cincy was coming out of C-USA (right?) and it's not that hot a place. But I don't think that Brian Kelly just did well with team he inherited; I think he turned things around last year, although they collapsed and lost 2 games that they shouldn't have--Louisville and Pitt. I think Kelly will do better than Dantonio did as he is a better coach.

I read that last night, troll. He was wrong about the secondary. The secondary really improved last year. Passing defense was ranked 10th in the country IIRC. Yes, Warren is great, but Morgan Trent also improved last year. These preseason evaluations are tough because RR is better than Lloyd at getting more out of his players, especially at certain positions, but RR's offense will probably need some time to click. The analysis of his offense was interesting though, but the defense should be better than a lot of people expect.

It actually may have been easier for Dantonio to recruit while at Cincy. Cincinatti has a lot of homegrown talent and perrenial powerhouse schools and not all of those kids go to OSU. Essentially, Dantonio was competing against a bunch of MAC schools for 3 star talent, got a lot of those kids, and still put a fairly miserable team on the field. Kelly has the same exact kids from the same exact high schools and look at how well his team played last year.
Keep in mind, when your schedule features Miami of Ohio, Aron, and your D-IAA opponent of choice, you should win more than 6 games.
He's just not a good coach. Time will prove me correct.

BGH:
I think you're wrong about Dantonio. Cincinnati (and you're lucky you caught that b/c I was on the way to busting your balls) is a horrendous place to recruit to, even with the local talent. He built the foundation on which Brian Kelly now stands, and he'll eventually get Lil' Bro on par with Wisconsin as a second tier Big 10 team.
And Waymen, a friend of mine played for Kelly at Central, says the guy treats his players like shit and he's not the kind of coach people want to play for. Think what's his name from Varsity Blues- good coach, lots of success, but the all haye him and when push comes to shove they'll lay down. Unless there's Ali Larter in a whipped cream bikini for every player, a major program would be foolish to hire him.

Ninja, that's all fine and good, but what is your basis? Dantonio couldn't turn UC into a second tier Big east team. And I disagree with your assesment of recruting in Cincinnati. Their best player, DE Terrill Byrd, is from Colerain. Colerain, itself, has very close ties with UC and is a very good program, probably one of the top ten public school football programs in the country. Another very good player, CB Mickens, is from around here (Dayton area). There is one major football program in Ohio, then UC, then a bunch of MAC schools. If Dantonio can't beat out MAC teams, how is he going to beat out U-M and ND for talent? He's not.
People look at his association with Tressel and give him the benefit of the doubt. But I think it's misplaced and I think he's a very mediocre coach. All those 7, 4,3 point losses last year? All those second half meltdowns? That's not on the players, that's on Dantonio for simply being out coached.

As for Henton, I can understand- he'll never get a fair shot with Pryor there. Even if he did get a chance from the coaches, the mobs coming after Tress's head if he played Henton over Pryor would be unreal.

Ninja, you're naive. Bo Schembechler was a total bully and asshole. The HC doesn't need to be Mr. Suggles like Lloyd. 90% of the players hated Bo. The other 10% had their noses up his ass.

Players hating him or not, Kelly won about 10090 games at GVSU in a row. If his guys were going to "lay down" on him regularly, you would have seen that happen at GVSU. It never did. I don't think Cincy is quite at the level where they can be "expected" to beat teams like Louisville and Pitt quite yet, so I'm going to reserve judgment on whether his abrasive personality costs him success.
Also, Tom Coughlin.

I was a bit surprised Molk wasn't listed at C, so that makes sense.
I don't think Dantonio is going to super awesome or anything, but he's already displayed an ability to recruit reasonably well. Ultimately, I think he'll put those players in a position to succeed more often than Bobby or John L. Sparty can look forward to a glorious run of 8-4 type seasons and perhaps even a victory over U-M.

I just have a hard time accepting any heresay on what coaches are "assholes" and what coaches aren't. If Kelly was such a huge dick that no one wanted to play for him, we'd have seen that, I think. At the end of the day, if a coach shows that he can put a proven winner on the field, High School kids will come play for him.

@Caup:
I think you're wrong. There are coaches who you think are assholes and work you to the bone and you come to see they do what they do in order to help you grow as a person and as a player. Bo would fit into that. Then there are coaches who are fed by ego, who refuse to give players the time of day, and who are concerned with winning and winning only. You can't call me naive unless you've had experience with both, and from what i've heard Kelly falls in the second category.
My use of a movie to illustrate my point surely didn't help, but it's something that many people would be familiar with.
BGH:

I think that a good example is Herb Brooks vs. the guy from Varsity Blues.
Lloyd, in the style of Bobby Dodd, just had a different approach. More of a father type. That isn't to say that Bo and Joe Paterno haven't had huge impacts on people's lives (or necks in Woody's case).

Bo would belittle his players mercilessly. He was not just a taskmaster, he was a fuckhead. He played favorites. He treated the walk-ons like dogshit and exploited and unfairly "punished" them to scare the star players and keep them in line. I know this firsthand from many of the players from the 80's. I was roommates off-campus with several players during my 4 years, from stars to 3rd stringers and walk-ons.
Bo was also a hell of a good coach. But let's drop the whole myth about the truly great coaches not being complete bastards. History is littered with great football coaches who were terrible people to their players.

So, what's your point, Troll. The city of Dayton sucks and UD is marginal in most ways. Winning % in Ohio is a meaningless stat that proves, well, nothing. There are high school coaches with better winning percentages than Tressel, does that mean they're better coaches?

I'm not a front runner. But you can't compare two very different skill levels and act as if achievement holds the same value Because, it doesn't. Mt. Union has dominated D-III for a long time. Do you hold their achievements in the same light as OSU's? Winning on the highest/higher levels is absolutely distinct from lower-level success.
That's not a "front runner" opinion, that's just a reality.

Sunny,
The disaster is that even though you may feel that you're paying for B-10 Net. in the summer because of the supposed increase to your regular cable bill, the bottom line is Comcast is always raising your bills anyway! Last year my bill went up even though I was actually losing channels! The sports tier would provide Comcast millions in added revenues, which they would not have through the digital pkg. Don't let them get away with that!
