Gravatar I saw a little bit of the first half and thought to myself "there's no way they'll screw this up".

I'll never underestimate Weis again.

Gravatar Oh, I read that post by Jay this morning, too. It was so completely delicious that I went back tonight for seconds...and it was gone.

Brian, thanks for saving it!

Gravatar The only thing better than this post will be the comment thread in about 12 hours.

Someone remind me how many years are left on his contract.

Gravatar Internets are forever.

Gravatar i am enjoying every last second of this year, regarding nd's enormous suckitude!

Gravatar Charlie 7-18-1 ATS last 28 games.

Just to continue a theme from another post, and all that.

Priceless stuff. But the writer is off base....i am sure this is really Willingham's fault, right?

Gravatar I envy him for still being able to get that upset after a loss in a 1-8 season.

Gravatar I know this sounds silly, but is there any concern that we could make the type of hire that would make us the next Notre Dame, and if there isnt why couldnt that happen to us?

Gravatar "Never get involved in a land war in Asia, and NEVER GO IN AGAINST NAVY WHEN OVERTIME IS ON THE LINE."

MAKE PLAYS!!!

Gravatar I don't think there has been any hire in history as bad as Charlie Weis. Even Bill Callahan isn't as bad as Charlie. Bill Callahan had his players quit on him at Oakland. He had them quit on him at Nebraska, I can't imagine anyone hiring him again. And I still think Charlie Weis is a worse coach. He is more obsessed with people thinking he is a genius than winning games. Remember not naming a starting QB against GT cause it gave him and advantage? We saw how well that worked out.

Bottom line, Michigan will never have that failure as long as we insist on someone with proven head coaching exprience that involves winning, or at the very least a highly successful UM assistant coach. This, obviously, eliminates Mike Debord and Ron English. Thankfully, ND and Nebraska's mistakes will also preclude us hiring someone like Cam Cameron, a great coordinator, a terrible head coach.

Gravatar I do give him credit for the princess bride reference there...

I wonder what kind of response will happen to this post, since it was one of their own and all.

Will it be:
a) more anger?
b) demands to delete it because it was removed from the source?
c) comments about how all we care about is paying attention to Notre Dame?
d) explanations about how next year's recruiting class is going to come in because Charlie will have one more year with "his guys" and they'll be headed straight back to the top?

Can someone confirm that ND doesn't have a hidden tie-in to go to a BCS game even if they win less than four regular season games?

Gravatar Say what you want about Charlie, how amazing is that leap over the RB. One of those plays that makes you say, "damn, if I had one play to make, that would be it." Good job Navy.

Gravatar Incredibly, about a third of the comments on that post involved complaints about how profanity should not be used while discussing Notre Dame football. As the program falls apart, they were sniping about each other over whether it's okay to swear. There also was brief discussion of the U.S. News academic rankings. Jay's post made me feel kind of sorry for Notre Dame, and then his insane commenters piped up about etiquette and I was reminded of why the Navy win felt so very, very good.

Gravatar MY GOD JAY! I THOUGHT I WOULD NEVER FEEL SORRY FOR A ND FAN,I WAS WRONG. CHARLIE DOES SAY SOME DUMB-ASS SHIT.F-WIES AND ND

Gravatar Agreed with bighouse. I finally feel sorry for ND fans. I've had enough schadenfreude at their expense; at this point it's just unwatchable.

Gravatar I honestly think ND is so beaten down now that anyone that would also read this blog would approve of the reposting. I read the BGS comment thread on the original and the majority was in agreement with Jay. I can't imagine going 1-8 with 21 highschool All-Americans, losing to Navy, then having the coach say the streak means nothing and the difference in the game is they scored 2 more points. After someone in the ND thread blamed Willingham's recruiting, another ND guy asked him what Navy's classes the last 4 years were ranked. I laughed so hard.

Gravatar I think the keys to Weis/ND and why it's unlikely to happen to UM are that it requires an

1. Incompetent AD and a

2. Fanbase of slappies.

The Davie-OLeary-Willingham-Weis-10yr Weis contract extension debacle just would not happen under Bill Martin's watch. And Michigan fanbase is too smart/too critical for Weis is a genius, recruits today = nat'l championship tomorrow, global warming is Ty Willingham's fault and the other South Bend delusions of the month.

That said, I do think a strong ND is good for college football in general, as well as the Big 10. I hope they can turn it around ... after Weis's 10 years are up.

Gravatar Laugh now, cause you won't be laughing in 2 years.

/Weis

We better beat these clowns next year or we are gonna have some serious egg on our face.

Gravatar Charlie is such a genius, he's playing for the #1 draft pick!

Gravatar I was happy that someone was thinking out of the box. Something out of line with what NDNation propaganda machine "suggests" ND fans do.. Boy, I was wrong. I liked that poster for the frank outburst -- akin to pink kittens mode after Appy St.

But a few commentors quickly shot down the post. How it was inappropriate. How the comment thread was like scUM ( sic)? Hey Domers, you'd kill for a 8-2 record! Your incompetent smug coach lost the game. you can't pin it on O-Line. not the QB. not Ty Willingham. It's your uber-genius Charlie Weis.

The funny thing was after that ridiculous call to go for it on 4th down instead of trying to kick a field goal and win it in regular time, I was thinking how ND fanbase would spin it to make him appear as a super genius.

Grow some balls ND.

Gravatar ...that ending was so poetic. With the Michigan victory and KN pounding Neb in the butt like a scene out of Oz...I'm still giddy all over...GO BLUE!

Gravatar I think Lloyd and English should start poaching but they are too classy to initiate contact.

Gravatar The best Weis moment of the weekend was when he was finally pinned down and force to explain why he passed up a makable field goal to go for it on 4th and 8 with under a minute to go in a tie game and his only response was "Why? So we could miss the kick?".

Good old Charlie. When you make one of the worst calls of the year in CFB and get called to task for it, throw your player under the bus for sucking.

Gravatar I still think a bad hire could happen, but Weis illustrates the need for us to get a coach with head coaching experience at the D-1 level. We need someone who has coached at a high level and recruited at a high level

Gravatar Great stuff. Hooray RSS feeds!

Gravatar Weis has the most amazing recruiting class I've ever seen. How is he selling these kids?

Gravatar One thing I take away from Callahan/Weis is that even the modern college game isn't all about schemes or xs and os or 5-star recruits. It's still based on fundamentals, getting the kids fired up on gameday, and the team, the team, the team, the team.

Gravatar From Mlive:
"But, Caulcrick took exception with one U-M player who added injury to insult as the players were walking off the field, and got into shouting match with him."

Anyone know who the this was?

Was their any official work from Henne on his wipeout while running back to the locker room?

Gravatar The dig at the kicker was bad. I also thought this sounded odd: Charlie Weis, meanwhile, did not want to hear about any Navy streak. "These kids are 17. Do you think they're worrying about 43 years?" he said. "They are worrying about right now."

He probably was trying to soft-pedal the loss's effect on team psyche, but for a place that prides itself on tradition, there was a kick-in-the-teeth quality to this. Places like Michigan and ND are different because of their histories. Could you imagine Lloyd saying in '05, "The Little Brown Jug is from 1903. These kids are seventeen. Do you think they're worrying about 102 years?"

Gravatar Maybe if ND wasn't a racist instituion then there would be talk of firing Charlie. But alas, that isn't the case.

Gravatar Of course Charlie wants to minimize the imprtance of the streak. He's the coach who managed to break it. Not Faust, not Davie, not Willingham. But Super Genius, Super Bowl (assistant) winner, QB guru Chucky Weis. He knows that's a stain that doesn't come out. Especially in a disappointing season, the Irish fans were still hanging their hats on the last 4 games being a break. The streak might not have meant anything to fat boy, but those arrogant, history and tradition loving fans liked it.

Gravatar Hey, at least he managed to keep the game within 30 points this week.

Gravatar Given the place that tradition plays in the ND psyche, I'm amazed that Weis would have had that attitude about trying a field goal in less-than-optimum circumstances. He's totally forgotten about Harry O's miracle kick in 1980 against us.

Gravatar "Charlie is such a genius, he's playing for the #1 draft pick!"

--------------------------------

HILARIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gravatar All the capital letters got annoying...

...but ha.

Seriously...there's absolutely no reason for Notre Dame to have such a great recruiting class. I know they see immediate playing time and everything...but if that's their interest, why don't they go to Cincinnati or something? You know, a team that might have a future.

Gravatar YOU KICK THE BALL AND YOU TRY TO END IT IN REGULATION BECAUSE NAVY CAN GET 25 YARDS WHENEVER THEY GODDAM PLEASE.

since when did navy turn into a powerhouse?

Gravatar Since they played Notre Dame, duh...

Gravatar CrimeNotes - I saw that too. There was getting to be a lot of sniping whether "god damn" was a curse word; I jumped in to suggest that it was two words. Never saw what came of that though as the post was pulled.

Ha.

Gravatar After Navy, I am tired of seeing ND lose. ND is starting to get the bad mouth reputation like an un attractive girl.

Remember, we will be dating this girl for the next 25 years - we don't want to bad mouth our date (even if we are just going to use and defile her anyway...)

Gravatar I still say that I've never heard a college coach use the words "I" and "me" so frequently in press conferences as Charlie Weis does. When Weis was hired, Mark Bavaro was quoted as saying, "He's a guy who has absolutely no ego."

I don't think Bavaro could have been any further off base.

Gravatar that's the tastiest breakfast i've ever eaten.

i've said it many, many, many times - you may hate lloyd, and you may think he's a lousy coach, and you may think that he's the worst thing that's ever happened to the state of michigan as a whole...think of the worst thing you can imagine, and double it, and apply it to lloyd carr.

but you have to admit - lloyd carr will never fucking EVER go 1-8. EVER.

Gravatar Yes! Yes! Yummy! Yes!

Gravatar ah, yes. the static outburst of a brain bursting forth from the foggy depths of denial.

Gravatar Imagine a good Catholic boy using such language! Off to confession with you!

As for me, I'm trying hard not to enjoy Notre Dame's season too much. Given the vagaries of college football, any team -- including Michigan-- could have a season like this.

But still... ;-l ;-) ;-D

Gravatar Well - I was just over at BGS reading the comments on the thread that discusses the original post.

I saw a comment "good thing Brian posted it at MgoBlog". A moment later when i refreshed, that comment was gone.

Awaiting the coming shitstorm.

Gravatar "But, Caulcrick took exception with one U-M player who added injury to insult as the players were walking off the field, and got into shouting match with him."

From the Lansing State Journal:

MSU's Jehuu Caulcrick and U-M's Terrance Taylor exchanged heated words near the tunnel, before a U-M official got between them.

"You don't do that, you should have more class than that," said Caulcrick, who said Taylor approached him and started jawing.

--------------

My guess is that Taylor merely went up to him and said "so, is this like losing two games?", given Caulcrick's comment on September 1st that Michigan losing to Appalachian State was like "winning two games". If so, Jehuu got what he deserved.

Gravatar REading the comments on that thread, I still cannot fathom the reality that the ND faithful live in. To paraphrase: "Charlie knew the kicker wouldn't make the FG, so HE made the call so the blame could fall on Weis' shoulders instead of the kicker's."
Wow. Just wow.
I really hope Army and Duke can do it.

Gravatar yea, i read that original post, didn't know it got pulled. way to stand by what you think/type, domer.

i think i've enjoyed EVERY part of the 1-8 thus far...until i read about weis' comments re:navy and the 43 years streak.

Could you imagine Lloyd saying in '05, "The Little Brown Jug is from 1903. These kids are seventeen. Do you think they're worrying about 102 years?"

...to explain why he passed up a makable field goal to go for it on 4th and 8 with under a minute to go in a tie game and his only response was "Why? So we could miss the kick?"

those 2 quotes by weis are inexcuseable. moreso than the decesions on the field he made. can you imagine? he's tossing a kicker under the bus (a kicker he recruited?) and he's tossing out upwards of 50 years of ND tradition just so he doens't look as bad. i thought he was a bad coach before this....but wow, there is no way i'd have my kid play for this jerkoff.

Gravatar Yeah, Tom Brady is soooooo lucky that Weis made his career. Where would he be without Charlie ?

Gravatar Coffee is for closers. Charlie, you call yourself a coach, you
(&(*^)*&%)^!

Gravatar After seeing that 2 point "attempt" where 6-13 Navy players overwhelmed the ND line, my wife kept saying "ND should be thrown out of the midwest- how can a midwestern team not field any big strong kids to block?"

Hee.

Their tears taste like delicious candy. I like Notre Dame, and I think that college football is better when they're good. Yet, I want Charlie Weis to go 1 and a billion.

Gravatar I tried to post these thoughts on the BGS thread but failed due user error.

Deciding not to kick was just wrong. It’s hard to figure what ND’s chances of making the kick were but they are 1/5 on kicks >40. So, at least 20-25%. They make the kick they win because Navy isn’t getting into FG range (and have a horrible kicker) with

Gravatar Jeebus does not want me to make this post. One more time.

I tried to post these thoughts on the BGS thread but failed due user error.

Deciding not to kick was just wrong. It’s hard to figure what ND’s chances of making the kick were but they are 1/5 on kicks >40. So, at least 20-25%. They make the kick they win because Navy isn’t getting into FG range (and have a horrible kicker) with

Gravatar “If it comes down to everything being even and it’s X’s and O’s, I have to believe we’re going to win most of the time.”

Charlie Weis, upon being hired as head coach.

Gravatar What was awesome is that at my house, we flipped over to the game just as this play was unfolding. But my husband (who really needs glasses) misunderstood which team was wearing the dark blue jerseys. And I didn't look closely either.

So imagine you were watching this thing the other way. We watched the kicker warming up thinking he was the Navy kicker. And we watched in shocked, horrified disbelief as they didn't go for the field goal. We were beside ourselves--we don't care about Navy but we hate Notre Dame. How could Navy not put the Irish away? Sputtering comments were made condemning Navy, sailors, midshipmen, Annapolis, fleets, anchors, you name it.

And then...then... the delicious, sweet redemption of realizing we were wrong, and that this boneheaded decision was not, in fact, made by Navy. As sheepish as we were for mixing up the gold helmets, imagine how AWESOME it was to realize that everything we were just screaming at the TV for was in fact an error made by the hated team.

Yessssssss.

Gravatar I know it's tempting to feel sorry for and look away from the craptastic ND catastrophe, but I have no sympathy for them and am enjoying their denial to the fullest. And I'm doing it because of the way they treated Willingham. Yep, I'm dropping the race card.

Look, I doubt there was any conscious racism that went into the decision to can Willingham before his contract ended, and I understand the pressure ND was under when they gave Weis his decade extension. Having said all that, however, the fact remains that white guy idiots Davie and Faust got 5 years, and white guy idiot Weis will likely get 5 years, while the black guy idiot got canned after 3 years. And to top it off, the black guy was briefly blamed for ND failures three years after he left.

I'm open to alternative explanations, but the only one I see is race. White guys 5 years at ND, the black man only gets 3. That's just indisputable, unless ND plans on firing Weis after this year, and, well, you know...

Fuck them. Fuuuuuuck them.

Gravatar Weis is bad.

Gravatar soooo, last week Navy loses to my school 1-AA Delaware, at home no less, 59-52, then this week they go into South Bend and win 46-44, i'm surprised more people aren't talking about that

Gravatar cfaller96,
The main reason Willingham was fired was not because of race, it was becuase ND was certain they were going to get Urban Meyer, who made it clear he was leaving Utah. When Meyer dissed ND and took the FLA job, the whole thing blew up in their face.

Gravatar What pressure was ND under to give Weis a ten-year extension?

Gravatar "I never thought I would see the day where Charlie Weis would cost us a ballgame."

One way or another, when you have as much talent as that team, Charlie Weis' inability to coach has cost ND a lot more than one game. Assuming that Michigan and USC are the only two teams that have close, equal or superior talent than ND, that leaves 6 losses directly attributed to coaching.

Gravatar "Priceless stuff. But the writer is off base....i am sure this is really Willingham's fault, right?"

Not exactly. Willingham did nothing for this recruiting class. But there is no excuse for them being this bad. 7-5 is a worst possible scenario. Weis is just that bad. That Notre Dame team has TWENTY high school all american players on it. The fact that its a "down" year does not give the excuse of having the worst Notre Dame team in the school's history. Pathetic. Absolutely pathetic.

Gravatar In a world I would love to live in, that ND goes 1-10, how bad does that make UCLA look?
Would UCLA losing to ND look worse than UM - App State ?

Gravatar CAUP '91, ok fine, but that doesn't explain why Weis should get more time than Willingham. According to many different categories and statistics, he's way worse than Willingham.

Look, the decision to fire Willingham was a little controversial, but I can see where ND was coming from. But that doesn't explain why they don't use the same logic to fire Weis after 3 years.

The decision to fire a coach and the decision to hire a new coach are two distinct decisions. If ND can't figure out how to fire a white guy after 3 years for doing a worse job than a black guy after 3 years, then they have to accept the reality that they apply a different performance standard to white guys than to black guys.

As I said, I don't think it was a conscious decision by anyone at ND to have this double standard. But unless they fire Weis after 3 years, then that double standard exists, period. ND will have to live with that, and I will continue to revel in their misery because of that.

Gravatar I read that BGS post over and over again yesterday (actually I just kept going back to see the comment thread). I can't believe they pulled the entire post. Especially because Jay, in the comments, apologized for the profanity, but said that they weren't going to pull the post. Way to stick by your guns.

God forbid any part of the Notre Dame fanbase stop drinking the Charlie Weis kool-aid. My favorite part of the comment threads are the Weis supporters who claim that Notre Dame will be playing for the MNC in two years...

Gravatar By the way, the Glengarry Glen Ross reference in Jay's post is pretty awesome.

Gravatar Silly, tangential point, and I'd hate for this thread to devolve into something from BGS, but still: an authority on the English language and Catholic doctrine, William F. Buckley, has defended the use of the word "goddam" as being neither offensive nor sacrilegious.

Yes, I read NR -- usually after MGoBlog.

Gravatar medals, a lot of NFL clubs came calling towards the end of Weis' 1st season. And that was a season where he beat U-M, came within a hair of beating the Greatest USC Team Ever, and went to a BCS bowl.

Before that season began, ND had just finished a coaching search and signed a coach that turned out pretty good (at the time). And they were staring down the barrel of doing it all over again. They felt they had to lock him up.

But IMO, it's clear that Weis is a horrible, horrible coach. With that in mind, buying out his 10 year contract is a small price to pay to get him out of the program. I mean, not only is he horrible, but he's an a--hole too.

Besides, the Vatican probably has that money in the petty cash drawer.

Gravatar I cannot put into words how happy I am that Notre Dame sucks this year. With every game they lose, the smile on my face just keeps growing bigger and bigger.

Gravatar I was at the UM-Sparty game and I didnt notice Henne's fight with the goalpost. My brother called me afterwards and told me about it... was like, "WTF was he doing?" I had to explain that Henne has always been kind of a clumsy bastard and that getting sacked by a goalpost is not implausible.

Gravatar That's what really makes the streak-breaking win for Navy so great - this is not a very good Navy team. They just got pounded a week ago by D-IAA Delaware. And I mean pounded. Yet they beat the vaunted Irish.

Gravatar MMmmmm, yummy. Let me lick those tears, Notre Dame fans. Mmmmm. Mmmmmm!

Gravatar Cockles: warmed

Gravatar Sweet, sweet tears of unfathomable sadness!

Gravatar Sorry..Notre Dame losing never gets old. Don't feel sorry for them on bit.

Gravatar Anybody who feels bad for Notre Dame, just plain shouldn't. We would be mercilessly ridiculed if this was us. Let's all enjoy this while we can. They can think that the glory days will return soon, and that Weis will lead them back. Let's all just keep laughing at them.... "we have not said anything about their coaches, we have not said anything about their players... we'll do the talking tomorrow"

Gravatar How many wins will they need next year for a Return to Glory(TM) to be declared?

Gravatar >>> How many wins will they need next year for a Return to Glory(TM) to be declared?

Two. That's all they'll need to improve on this season - even Duke and Stanford should beat them.

Gravatar Having had a day to chew on this, may I say on behalf of ND fans - please enjoy. I don't mean that in a snarky "get it in now" sort of way - honestly, these team is so embarrassingly bad, everyone SHOULD laugh at us. I'm not sure we could beat the Millsaps Majors right now.

However ... and I should emphasize the 'if' in this statement ... if Weis pulls this around next year and the year following, if the team does make its way back around, if we're finally able to complete the 'return' as opposed to just starting it ... please be advised that Irish fans will remember all the times that you said we were all idiots for beliving it could be turned around, all of the times you called us racist for thinking Weis was better than Willingham, and all of the times you implied we are lower than dirt for supporting the Irish. (Really not sure what ND did to a lot of posters on here ... I mean, there is rivalry hate, and then there is "were you abused by a priest as a boy?" hate.) ... so, fair warning. We'll keep all that in mind.

But, seriously, laugh it up. Piss in our drink. We won't notice. God, we're awful.

Sorry for the troll. Rather enjoy this blog on non-ND posts.

Gravatar That made my day. Now I understand why lamers keep spouting the argument of "it's the hardest 8 game schedule evar!!!" because they couldn't believe that weis could possibly be outcoached by 38 points per game. it had to be willingham's fault, they were 'outmanned' with 75% of weis recruits, it's those two years of willingham recruits that went to three bcs bowls that were getting 'outmanned'

I haven't stopped laughing. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! and now those racists are stuck with him for 10 years. HAHAHAHAHAHAH!

Gravatar Eirishis,....one day you *will* turn it around (w/ or w/o weis), but it won't make you a 'better fan.' and it won't make the willingham firing any less 'dubious.' and it won't change the fact that catholics have no better a chance of getting into heaven than a buddist, a prodestant, or an atheist. more germain, it won't change the fact the ND is a program capable of going 2-10 in this day & age. just like MSU, when you do turn it around and even beat M, nothing will erase 'ND 2007.' or the 15 years of suck you've produced prior. of course it *could* be turned around. hell, it *should* be (by 2009 at least). no one's calling you idiots for hoping a turn around is possible. we're ripping you for having nothing but the hope of a turn around for 15 freaking years.
