One way to handle the packaging/distutils stuff is by just creating the necessary boilerplate files -- for instance, using Paste Script. Having, say, a py2exe+wxPython project template would be quite useful I am sure. (p2exe alone probably isn't that interesting until you start also joining it with the boilerplate for GUI apps).
There's no GUI frontend for Paste Script, but that would be a neat addition too.
I agree. It's particularly annoying that creating packages with distutils that are in the slightest bit 'non-standard' means wrestling with it. *sigh*
Good front ends for distutils/setuptools/py2exe/paste that allow for complex project setup would be *very useful*. I suspect no-one has the time for them though...
