For what it's worth, I've seen several mac software developers claim that it's easier for a small software company to sell for the mac (search 'buy software like crazy').

You know, the desktop software market is just a small percentage of the whole one. There's lots of business software out there, and lots of software *not* deployed as proprietary shrink-wrapped (remember the Internet?).
Even in that narrow category, the rising ease of use and efficiency of virtual machines allow one to develop for more robust, open, *better* operating systems, while deploying on the legacy one.
