Played with Agents a while back when, like you, I stumbled across it almost by accident. I occasionally use it to demonstrate Python-COM functionality because it seems to be installed on the major Win platforms even if Office isn't!
Ultimately, although we did briefly consider using the tech. for our app's help system, we ended up feeling it was a neat but gimmicky curiosity and didn't pursue it for serious use.
(Somewhere there are/were websites which let you download alternative characters; we even considered doing one of our project manager with a whiteboard pen in each hand!)

http://www.guile3d.com makes customized avatars, I think lots of them are free. I discovered it 2 days ago when I was looking at various aiml representations, seems aimlpad is capable of using agents.
Icannot use it in resolver one, it crashes even when I define it in a background thread
What exception message do you get?
