Keep us apprised on how this thing works for you. I do most of my work on Win products, and it would be interesting to hear if the OS combination causes any difficulties.

I use Windows at the office and Mac OS X at home, only issues were getting used to the keyboard and the Finder.

As an avid Mac (and macbook) user, here are some things I've noticed:
1. NeoOffice (cocoa wrapper around Open Office) works pretty well for doing Word / Excel stuff
2. Did you get Apple Care? I don't know how it applies to refurbished gear but there were many problems with all generations of the macbook mother board. A firmware update from the apple site *might* be able to fix it for you, if you still have an older generation. To find out more, google "macbook random shutdown" and "macbook screen flicker." I've had my mother board replaced twice now but Apple Care covered it. Now I will need a 3rd replacement because I've developed the flicker. I think Apple/Intel are really pushing their luck with their "rush to market" strategy. However, it's a great little machine for python dev.
3. Parallels eats up a ton of cpu but runs tenfold nicer than the old Virtual PC for mac.
4. Unless you can't live without emacs (or something) I'd recommend trying out TextMate (commercial code editor). If you combine it with Quicksilver (free launcher tool) you can write code entirely mouse free with useful shortcuts, like with emacs.

I intend to try TextMate. I know Word well enough so will probably stick with it as I have been unimpressed with the OpenOffice handling of Word documents every time I have tried it.
I *didn't* get Apple Care as I generally don't pay for extended warranty. I do get the standard one year warranty and am eligible to buy Apple care if it is really worth it...

I've had good sucess with an open source text editor called Smultron... and have switched to gnumeric (compiled via darwinports) for my (scientific) spreadsheet needs no... it doesn't integrate nicely into the OS, but it's a *lot* faster than NeoOffice ( but then, I'm plaging my poor mac with running Mac OS, 3 linuxes and a windows at the same time using Parallels. Works ok for about a week, then I need to reboot).

For a text editor everyone is raving about TextMate. I still need to be able to use Word.
For spreadsheets I think I will be using Resolver...

I have a MacBook Pro that I use for work and my opensource work. Mono and IronPython works a treat under OS X, but getting MonoDevelop going was not much fun. I use VMWare Fusion for running XP with Visual Studio amd MS Office and also have a Ubuntu image as well. Great for working on cross-platform stuff. I have friends who are doing simialr things with Parallels.

Would recommend VMware Fusion (it has better Windows integration, and is generally more mature than Parallels) and getting AppleCare at some point; laptops just tend to break more frequently because they're moved around. I've never *not* needed an extended warranty on any of my laptops, Apple or otherwise.

I got a Mac laptop recently as well . Didn't splash out for the Pro version, but it's still extremely shiny and the whole experience is a whole lot more polished than with my old Dell/Windows one.
I look forward to reading your experiences with your new gadget..
