I've spent a bunch of time talking to John Buckman about BookMooch - he's a really interesting guy, and the architecture of the site is fascinating. He swears by Berkeley DB for the storage layer, which lets him run a huge amount of transactions through just a single server. One of the main reasons he uses Tcl is that it's thread safe (no GIL) which means he can do all sorts of crazy things with concurrency.

Nicola, thanks for pointing people at my blog entry about the Tcl/AolServer/BerkeleyDB back-end I use on BookMooch.
Speaking of coding & APIs, next on my todo list is to try to integrate BookMooch into the new Open Social API and see if I can embed book-swapping functionality into existing social networks.
