I heartily recommend English Passengers by Matthew Kneale

It's sort of Australian history - very funny in parts.

However, it may be hard to get. Try second hand if you can't get new.

I did today manage to pick up MJ Hyland "This Is How" and "The Philosopher and the Wolf" by Mark Rowlands (cos I heard him in the car driving to the bookshop)
