What about how one of the more annoying parts of his article was where he discussed how his own "better-than-indie-because-using-more-black-music-
influences" band somehow failed because he could not manage to "sound black" while singing?
That was so baffling to me.

David Denby's article was pretty ridiculous, too. He laments the fall of real movie stars while simultaneously admitting: "American movie acting, in both small and large movies, has never been netter than at the present moment." Which, yeah, I admit being a star and an actor are different, but it is a little odd for a critic of a specific art to prioritize some reductive and nostalgic notion of glamour over actual artistry.
I'm wondering if the whole Arts Issue will be one giant and stupid "they don't make 'em like they used to" argument.
