Thank you for this. It soothes the frazzled nerves.

does it? every time i turn on the news they are gabbing endlessly about one of noonan's ludicrous memes, giving it credence and legitimacy, leading viewers further and further away from substantive issues.
don't get me wrong, i am glad this well-reasoned and articulate argument is floating in the ether, but i have my doubts that such essays have nearly enough viral power. the right can spin one nasty/insipid/poorly-informed/irrelevant issue into a national obsession (i still reel at the unbelievable strength of 2004's childish "flip-flopper" charge), while reasoned counter-arguments rarely find the spotlight.
i have a hard time imagining what it would take to elevate election coverage to the realm of educated adult conversation.
in related news: i am a cranky old man.

No, no! I too am cranky and (almost as) old. What I meant was: reading this alone in my brain vacuum made me feel better for a second. As far as the world outside I'm just as pissed off and depressed as before. Well-reasoned internet essays are like cheap calamine lotion for the liberal soul.
